France Becomes First Country to Implement Digimarc Recycle, Paving the Way for Others to Follow

France has taken a significant step towards combating plastic pollution by becoming the first country to implement Digimarc Recycle, a revolutionary solution developed by Digimarc Corporation. This milestone achievement is a result of the collaboration between the HolyGrail initiative leadership team and various visionary stakeholders, including P&G, L’Oreal, Henkel, Veolia, CITEO, and Pellenc ST.

Digimarc Recycle is a game-changer in the recycling of plastic waste. By utilizing covert digital watermarks and a cloud-based repository of product attributes, this technology overcomes the limitations of current optical sorting methods. It enables precise identification of plastic packaging, leading to improved sorting quality and quantity of recyclable materials. Additionally, Digimarc Recycle opens up new end markets for post-consumer recyclate, creating opportunities that did not exist before. The technology also provides product-specific disposal instructions to consumers through on-pack watermarks or QR codes.

Riley McCormack, Digimarc President & CEO, commended the France team and its member organizations for their vision and action. He emphasized the commitment to expand the rollout of Digimarc Recycle to other facility operators, brands, and retailers in France, as true leadership is defined by those who take action when progress is hindered by inertia.

Apart from enhancing sorting capabilities, Digimarc Recycle offers a holistic view of the post-purchase product journey, benefiting stakeholders across the value chain. Governments can gain unprecedented insights into their waste streams, Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) can design more accurate Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, facility operators can unlock operational efficiencies, and brand owners and retailers can access data for design-for-recyclability improvements and consumer behavior insights.

Digimarc is determined to expand this initiative in Europe and is actively engaged with other groups worldwide to establish new Digimarc Recycle markets. With the technology readily available, delayed adoption could result in irreversible damage to our planet. The time to act is now.
