PPL Corporation’s Subsidiary, Rhode Island Energy, Receives Regulatory Approval to Deploy Advanced Metering Functionality

PPL Corporation’s subsidiary, Rhode Island Energy, has recently obtained regulatory approval to implement advanced metering functionality across the state. This significant development aligns with PPL’s commitment to building a smarter, more resilient, and reliable grid that supports Rhode Island’s ambitious climate goals.

Vincent Sorgi, the President and CEO of PPL Corporation, highlighted the company’s dedication to executing their utility of the future strategy. This strategy aims to enhance the reliability and resiliency of their energy networks, facilitate a clean energy transition, improve operational efficiency, and deliver value for customers and shareholders.

Advanced metering infrastructure has already been successfully deployed by PPL in Pennsylvania and is currently being implemented in Kentucky. This technology provides customers with detailed usage information, expedites power restoration by pinpointing outage locations, enables remote service activation, and offers new dynamic pricing options.

PPL’s experience in deploying advanced metering functionality will greatly benefit Rhode Island Energy as they begin installing next-generation digital meters in late 2024. The deployment is expected to be completed over the next three years, with the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission authorizing capital investments of up to $153 million for this initiative.

This project is just one example of PPL’s ongoing investment in the future to better serve their 3.5 million customers across Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Rhode Island, and Virginia. With a planned investment of over $12 billion through 2026, PPL aims to strengthen grid reliability and resiliency while transitioning away from aging coal generation towards a reliable, least-cost, and cleaner energy mix.

Vincent Sorgi emphasized the importance of creating customer-centric and tech-enabled utilities to deliver on the promise of a clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy future. PPL Corporation appreciates the approval of advanced metering functionality by the Rhode Island commission and looks forward to showcasing its numerous benefits for the residents of Rhode Island.
