Micron Invests $75 Million to Build America’s Semiconductor Workforce of the Future in Idaho

Micron Technology, Inc., a leading semiconductor company, is celebrating its 45th anniversary by laying the foundation for America’s future. The company has announced a $75 million investment towards building a highly skilled semiconductor workforce in Idaho, where it is headquartered.

This investment comes as Micron marks the start of construction on the nation’s first new memory manufacturing fab in 20 years. The new fab, co-located with Micron’s R&D epicenter in Boise, will create over 17,000 new jobs in Idaho, including 2,000 direct jobs at Micron. The project is expected to directly infuse $15.3 billion into the Idaho economy and spend $13.0 billion with local businesses.

Micron’s commitment to Idaho extends beyond job creation. The company plans to invest $75 million over the next 10 years towards community and workforce development priorities. This investment aligns with the Idaho Community Investment Framework, a partnership between Micron, the State of Idaho, and the City of Boise, aimed at fostering inclusive growth across the state.

Micron’s President and CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, expressed his excitement about the future of high-tech manufacturing in the U.S. and the role Micron will play in meeting the growing demand for memory required for efficient data storage and processing. He emphasized the company’s dedication to securing domestic memory production and driving industry leadership.

Governor Brad Little praised Micron’s investment as the largest private investment ever made in Idaho. He highlighted the long-standing partnership between Micron and the state and expressed confidence in the company’s contribution to developing a motivated and capable workforce.

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean commended Micron’s commitment to sustainability and community well-being. She highlighted Micron’s efforts to achieve 100% water reuse, recycling, and restoration, as well as using 100% renewable electricity at the new facility. Mayor McLean emphasized the positive impact Micron has had on the Boise community and expressed excitement for the company’s future.

The new fab’s cleanroom space is expected to come online in phases starting in 2025, with DRAM production ramping up over the second half of the decade. Once completed, the cleanroom space will be the largest single cleanroom ever built in the country, spanning 600,000 square feet.

Micron’s investment plans in Idaho are made possible by anticipated grants and credits provided by the CHIPS and Science Act. The company has filed applications for its Idaho and New York projects with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Program Office.

Micron’s commitment to building America’s semiconductor workforce of the future in Idaho demonstrates its dedication to innovation, job creation, and community development. As the company celebrates its 45th anniversary, it continues to pave the way for revitalized high-tech manufacturing in the U.S.
