The ball deflected off the hands of WR K. Toney and fell into the awaiting hands of Lions rookie safety Brian Branch who ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown.

Following the successful extra point the score is tied up at 14-14

Detroit’s first drive meets the same fate as the Chiefs

Arrowhead stadium has grown incredibly loud once again as the Chiefs defense forces a three-and-out. Mahomes and the offense will take over near mid field.

Isiah Pacheco is being helped off the field by trainers

Pacheco appeared to injure his hip after being tackled on a rushing play. Both teams were breaking the huddle when he signaled that he needed assistance.

Mahomes hit Blake Bell on a four yard touchdown pass with only 34 seconds left in the half. After a successful extra point the Chiefs lead 14-7.

Mahomes hit two big throws during the drive one of which was an unbelievable catch in traffic by M.Valdes-Scantling for 34 yards. He then hit Ju.Watson for a 26 yard catch 

The Chiefs are whistled to our first penalty

A six-yard pass from Mahomes to Noah Gray is called back due to a holding penalty on T.Smith.

As the Chiefs look to score just before the half we are still tied up at seven

Both offenses have stalled out hear in the second quarter

After a KC punt following the fumble only for the Lions to punt the ball away after Goff is sacked on third and five.

The Chiefs defense picks up a huge turnover to end the Lions promising drive

Trent McDuffie knocked the ball loss after hitting Marvin Jones before recovering the fumble. Mahomes and the offense will taking things over at their own 7 yard line.

Detroit has their first big hiccup

A miscommunication on the snap leads to a fumble and an 11 yard loss for the Lions

Detroit has taken their first time out of the half

Some apparent miscommunication led to a timeout being called as the play clock was running down.

Patrick Mahomes tosses a 1-yard pass to Rashee Rice

The Lions only rushed four defenders and were unable to put pressure on Mahomes before he found the open man.

The catch was Rice’s career NFL touchdown. Following a successful extra point the score is tied up at 7-7

Mahomes scrambles to put the Chiefs inside of Detroit’s 10

He was able to evade the defense after being set to take a sack and scramble for yet another first down this drive.

The first quarter ends as the Lions lead 7-0

A big third drive of the game from Detroit saw them take the lead on an Amon Ra St. Brown touchdown reception. Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking to strike back as they continue their drive into the 2nd quarter.

Jared Goff connected to WR Amon Ra St. Brown for the seasons first TD

St. Brown was coming across the middle on what appeared to be a drag route as Goff was untouched in the pocket. Following a successful extra point Detroit leads the game 7-0.

St. Brown broke out as one of the league’s best up-and-coming WRs last season and appears to be keeping the positive momentum going.

The Lions offense is cooking on their third drive

Detroit has picked up three first downs on this drive and are looking threatening.

Detroit picks up a first down conversion after faking a punt on fourth and short

 A direct snap to J.Reeves-Maybin went up the for a conversion on fourth and short. The Lions have become known for being aggressive on fourth down under coach Dan Campbell and are setting the tempo early

Mahomes first drive ends in a punt as well

The Chiefs were able to pick up a first down have Mahomes connected on a 10-yard pass to J.McKinnon but he was eventually could not keep the drive alive.

KC’s first play is a five yard run

 C.Edwards-Helaire took a toss to the right side for a five-yard gain.

Mahomes and the Chiefs will look to continue making opening day history tonight

If the Chiefs can secure a win they will move to nine consecutive opening day wins. That will tie them for fourth all-time with the Chicago Bears for the longest streak in league history.

Mahomes himself will be looking to extend his streak of five straight opening day wins, He has picked up victories over the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Chargers.
