Vicinity Motor Corp., a leading North American supplier of commercial electric vehicles, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with ADASTEC Corporation to deploy an SAE level-4 autonomous electric transit bus at Michigan State University (MSU). This initiative, set to take place in the second quarter of 2024, will showcase Vicinity’s next-generation electric transit bus equipped with ADASTEC’s cutting-edge automated transportation technology.

The collaboration between Vicinity and ADASTEC marks a significant milestone in North America, as it will be the first deployment of its kind. ADASTEC has already made history at MSU by initiating passenger services using SAE Level-4 automated driving software technology, becoming the first full-size automated bus deployed on public roads in the U.S. to transport passengers within the MSU community.

The success of ADASTEC’s automated bus service, which covered a 4.6-mile route with various intersections, pedestrian crossings, and a bicycle lane, has paved the way for further advancements in campus transit. The integration of ADASTEC’s Signal Phase and Timing (SPAT) technology has improved rider comfort and energy efficiency, demonstrating the future of connected transportation.

Adam S. Lawver, Director of Campus Services at Michigan State University, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that it not only enhances MSU’s campus mobility infrastructure but also provides valuable insights for other entities looking to advance their own mobility efforts.

Dr. Ali, CEO of ADASTEC, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, emphasizing their commitment to innovation and the evolution of mobility solutions within the MSU ecosystem. William Trainer, CEO, President, and Director of Vicinity Motor Corp., echoed this sentiment, stating that the partnership signifies a new era in public transportation solutions for the United States.

Cemre Kavvasoglu, North America Product Management Director of ADASTEC, emphasized the long-term commitment and strengthening of their relationship with MSU. The collaboration aims to set new standards in campus transit with FMVSS, ADA, and Buy America-compliant buses from Vicinity Motor Corp.

The partnership between ADASTEC and Michigan State University has contributed significantly to MSU’s status as a leading mobility research institution. Judd Herzer, Mobility Director at MSU, praised ADASTEC’s professionalism and technical expertise, expressing confidence in their shared vision for the future of ADAS technologies and transit services.

The deployment of the autonomous electric transit bus at MSU is a testament to the continuous advancements in the field of electric vehicles and autonomous technology.
