Teledyne FLIR Introduces the Griffin G510x, a Revolutionary Portable Chemical Detector for Rapid Drug Analysis
Teledyne FLIR Defense, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, has unveiled the Griffin G510x, a groundbreaking portable chemical detector designed to analyze and identify explosives and narcotics, including the highly potent drug fentanyl. This new variant of the popular G510 system enables law enforcement and first responders to swiftly identify street drugs within five minutes, enhancing their ability to combat drug trafficking and save lives.
The Griffin G510x is built upon the success of Teledyne FLIR’s G510 platform, a portable Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) system widely used by domestic and international public safety teams for real-time in-field chemical threat confirmation. The new modifications on the G510x allow operators to detect trace amounts of narcotics, such as fentanyl and the xylazine combination ‘tranq,’ even when mixed with complex substances.
The ability to confidently identify drugs in the field is crucial for both medical staff and law enforcement. The Griffin G510x has demonstrated its unique capability to detect deadly narcotics that may be concealed within other substances. With fentanyl and its derivatives posing significant threats to users and emergency responders, even a minuscule amount can be life-threatening. The G510x can detect as little as a two-percent fentanyl concentration mixed with common pain relievers, surpassing the capabilities of other systems that may only detect the pain reliever itself.

The Griffin G510x features on-board drug databases that are regularly updated, providing confirmatory analysis for over 3,500 illicit drugs, metabolites, and related compounds. The device is equipped with a nine-inch touchscreen display, allowing for user prompts even while wearing protective equipment. Built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, and a Wi-Fi hotspot enable real-time analysis by Teledyne FLIR and third-party chemists, ensuring prompt confirmation or denial of chemicals of interest through an end-to-end encrypted connection.
