Smith-Midland Corporation to Begin $6.8M Architectural Precast Panel Project for Baltimore Harbor Tunnel

Smith-Midland Corporation, a leading provider of innovative precast concrete products and systems, has announced its involvement in a significant architectural precast panel project for the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. The project, valued at $6.8 million, will see the renovation of the existing vent buildings that were constructed in 1957.

The scope of the project involves removing the existing cladding from the vent buildings and replacing it with Smith-Midland’s state-of-the-art architectural precast concrete panels. These panels are designed with thin-brick cast into the face, providing an aesthetically pleasing and durable solution. The intricate coordination of resources is crucial, starting with the removal of the existing cladding and ensuring seamless panel connections with the uncovered structure.

One of the project’s challenges is the restricted and difficult-to-reach installation location, which will require a crane with a 150-foot reach. However, Smith-Midland has a successful track record in handling such requirements. Delivery and installation are scheduled to commence in 2024.

The Baltimore Harbor Tunnel’s vent buildings play a vital role in maintaining safe travel conditions by filtering out dangerous vehicle fumes and replenishing the tunnel with fresh air. With 16 fans per building, these structures are instrumental in ensuring the well-being of the millions of vehicles that pass through the tunnel annually.

Smith-Midland is collaborating with JMT Architects, Carroll Engineering, and W.M. Schlosser, the General Contractor, to ensure that the renovation process does not disrupt the normal business and function of the tunnel. The buildings will be renovated one at a time, allowing for continuous tunnel operations.

Ashley Smith, Chief Executive Officer and President of Smith-Midland, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “Our precast architectural panels are perfect for the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel project, and we are looking forward to being a part of revamping the vent buildings, which are such an important component of the tunnel system. It’s an honor to be a part of a project that sees more than 27 million vehicles pass through it annually, and we anticipate many more high-visibility and complex projects like this in our future.”

Smith-Midland Corporation, with its three manufacturing facilities located in Midland, VA, Reidsville, NC, and Columbia, SC, is known for its high-quality precast concrete products and systems. Additionally, its subsidiary, Easi-Set Worldwide, licenses the production and sale of Easi-Set products, providing diversification opportunities to the precast industry worldwide.
