SLB Launches Innovative Carbon Storage Screening and Ranking Solution to Drive Safer and Economic Projects

SLB, a global technology company, has unveiled its new carbon storage screening and ranking solution aimed at accelerating the growth of safer and economic carbon storage projects. The solution offers customers a scientific analysis of the long-term integrity and economic potential of an asset, increasing confidence in site selection decisions.

With the urgency to reduce emissions and achieve global net zero ambitions, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects are crucial. However, selecting the right storage site is essential for the success of these projects. SLB’s screening and ranking solution utilizes both technical and nontechnical data to provide a comprehensive assessment of storage sites, including capacity, economic viability, and potential risks. The solution also benchmarks each site against successful storage projects worldwide, ensuring a relative basis for ranking.

SLB employs proprietary tools and advanced digitally enabled workflows to validate data quickly and consistently. The emphasis is on risk identification through sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, enabling customers to avoid suboptimal storage sites that can waste time, resources, and decrease the probability of reaching a final investment decision.

In a recent collaboration with a customer in Trinidad and Tobago, SLB successfully screened and ranked potential storage sites ahead of an offshore exploration and production and carbon storage licensing round. By evaluating storage sites in three geographic provinces using 67 key criteria, SLB performed a sensitivity analysis to understand the influence of various attributes and site properties on the ranking outcomes. The sites’ performance was then benchmarked against carbon storage basins in the United States and Europe. Through Monte Carlo simulations, SLB ranked the sites for the customer, empowering them to prioritize areas with prime subsurface and surface characteristics for further evaluation and investment.
