Safe Bulkers Expands Fleet with Environmentally Friendly Vessels

Safe Bulkers, Inc., a leading provider of marine drybulk transportation services, has announced its commitment to environmental sustainability with the acquisition of two dual-fueled, eco-friendly vessels. The company has entered into contracts for the purchase of two 81,200 dwt Kamsarmax class dry-bulk vessels, designed to meet the latest environmental regulations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, these newbuild vessels will comply with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the NOx emissions regulation (NOx-Tier III). The vessels are capable of operating with methanol and fuel, allowing for close to zero greenhouse gas emissions when powered by green methanol.

Safe Bulkers has already taken delivery of five IMO GHG Phase 3 – NOx Tier III vessels and has plans to acquire nine additional newbuilds, including two dual-fueled vessels, by the first quarter of 2027. This fleet renewal strategy aligns with the company’s ambition to be at the forefront of environmental developments in the maritime industry.

Dr. Loukas Barmparis, President of Safe Bulkers, expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy and the acquisition of these environmentally friendly vessels. He emphasized the importance of adopting technologies that lead to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and reaffirmed Safe Bulkers’ commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
