Origin Materials Awarded Funding to Develop Sustainable Materials for Department of Defense Fleet Decarbonization

Origin Materials, the world’s leading carbon-negative materials company, has announced that it has been awarded funding from BioMADE, a Manufacturing Innovation Institute catalyzed by the U.S. Department of Defense. The funding is part of BioMADE’s initiative to enhance the domestic bioindustrial manufacturing ecosystem and support the Department of Defense’s fleet decarbonization efforts.

Origin Materials will utilize its technology platform to develop samples of bio-based polymers and bio-based carbon black. These sustainable materials can be used to manufacture more eco-friendly tires and other products. By supporting the Department of Defense’s fleet decarbonization goals, Origin Materials aims to contribute to the advancement of supply chain resiliency and sustainability.

Co-CEO of Origin Materials, Rich Riley, expressed excitement about the company’s selection for this initiative, stating that it reflects the strong momentum of their technology platform in addressing sustainability challenges. The projects funded by BioMADE have the potential to positively impact various aspects of society, from consumers to farmers to warfighters.

Dr. Douglas Friedman, CEO at BioMADE, highlighted the significance of these projects in transforming domestic manufacturing and creating new products. Dr. Melanie Tomczak, Head of Programs and CTO at BioMADE, emphasized the role of these innovations in enhancing military readiness, strengthening supply chains, supporting farmers, and generating employment opportunities in rural communities.

Origin Materials, headquartered in West Sacramento, California, has developed a patented technology platform that converts non-food biomass, such as sustainable wood residues, into useful materials while capturing carbon in the process. The company’s technology has the potential to revolutionize the production of various end products, including clothing, plastics, packaging, car parts, and more.

With a growing list of major global customers and investors, Origin Materials aims to address a ~$1 trillion market for sustainable materials. Their technology platform offers stable pricing, independent of the petroleum supply chain, reducing volatility and reliance on fossil fuels.
