Israel Suspends Production at Tamar Gas Field Amidst Regional Tensions

Israel has temporarily suspended production at the Tamar gas field, located off the southern coast of the country, as tensions escalate in the region. The decision comes after three days of violence, including a deadly incursion by Hamas gunmen from Gaza. Chevron, the operator of the field, confirmed that it had been instructed by the Israeli Energy Ministry to shut down operations. Tamar is a significant source of gas for Israel’s power generators, industry, and neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt.

In response to the situation, Israel’s defense establishment has ordered the temporary suspension of natural gas supplies from Tamar. The country’s energy needs will be met through alternative fuel sources, and the power industry is preparing to utilize these alternatives to sustain its operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has also authorized Energy Minister Yisrael Katz to declare a state of emergency for the energy sector if necessary, allowing for the allocation of natural gas to consumers in case of supply shortages.

The Tamar gas field, situated approximately 25 kilometers off the city of Ashdod along Israel’s southern Mediterranean coast, is within range of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. However, Israel’s largest offshore gas field, Leviathan, continues to operate normally, according to Chevron.

Israel has become a significant regional gas supplier since the start of production at the Tamar field a decade ago, followed by other gas developments. Tamar’s production increased by 18% in 2022, reaching 10.25 billion cubic meters. Chevron holds a 25% stake in Tamar, while other stakeholders include Isramco, Mubadala Petroleum, Tamar Petroleum, Dor Gas, and Everest.

As tensions persist in the region, Israel is actively seeking alternative fuel sources to ensure a stable energy supply. The government’s measures aim to safeguard the country’s energy sector and mitigate potential disruptions caused by the current situation.
