INPEX, Air Liquide, LSB Industries, and Vopak Moda Collaborate on Low-Carbon Ammonia Project in Houston

Tokyo-based INPEX Corporation, Paris-based Air Liquide Group, Oklahoma City-based LSB Industries, and Houston-based Vopak Moda Houston LLC have announced their collaboration on a large-scale, low-carbon ammonia production and export project on the Houston Ship Channel. The project’s first phase aims to produce over 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of low-carbon ammonia by the end of 2027, with potential for future expansions.

The project’s location on the Houston Ship Channel, one of the world’s largest petrochemical corridors, takes advantage of existing infrastructure assets. Vopak Moda has already invested in storage and handling infrastructure for bulk liquid products, including an ammonia terminal with storage tanks and a newbuild dock. The project also benefits from access to utilities and proximity to multiple pipelines that can supply raw materials such as natural gas and water.

The collaboration brings together the expertise of the project partners in production, operation, storage, and export, with the goal of advancing low-carbon ammonia production in the United States. INPEX, as a pioneer in energy transformation, sees this project as a significant milestone in creating a clean fuel supply chain for a sustainable future. Air Liquide, with its hydrogen production expertise, aims to contribute to the decarbonization of industrial processes. LSB Industries, a leader in low and no carbon products, will oversee the design, construction, and operation of the ammonia loop. Vopak Moda, with its state-of-the-art terminaling hub, is well-positioned to be a leader in the emerging low-carbon ammonia export market.

The global movement to decarbonize industry and transportation is expected to drive strong demand for low-carbon ammonia. The collaboration between INPEX, Air Liquide, LSB Industries, and Vopak Moda aims to be at the forefront of this market, leveraging their combined expertise, technology, and market credibility.

By harnessing cutting-edge technologies and forming collaborative partnerships, these companies are accelerating the transition to a low-carbon world while solidifying their positions as responsible global energy players. The project aligns with their commitment to environmental leadership and the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

As the project progresses, it has the potential to make a significant impact on the energy landscape, providing a stable supply of diverse and clean energy sources, including low-carbon ammonia. The development of this world-scale clean ammonia facility in Houston represents a step forward in the energy transition and a move towards a more sustainable future.
