Honeywell Secures Contract to Supply T55 Engines for South Korea’s CH-47F Helicopters

Honeywell, a global technology company, has recently announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide 41 T55-GA-714A engines to support South Korea’s procurement of new CH-47F aircraft. The engines will be used to replace the older CH-47D helicopters currently in service. The order and supply of the T55 engines are being managed through the U.S. Army Foreign Military Sales office.

The T55 engine, developed by Honeywell, is renowned for its exceptional performance in powering heavy lift helicopters. With over 1,000 CH-47 helicopters powered by T55 engines currently in operation worldwide, it has established itself as a world leader in this field. The latest T55-GA-714A engine configuration delivers nearly 5,000 shaft horsepower, enabling Chinook aircraft to reach speeds of up to 170 knots even in challenging operating conditions.

Dave Marinick, the President of Engines and Power Systems at Honeywell Aerospace, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue supporting South Korea with their new CH-47F Block I Helicopters using the latest T55-GA-714A engine configuration. He emphasized that the contract for 41 T55 engines reflects South Korea’s confidence in Honeywell’s battle-proven engines. To date, Honeywell’s T55 engines have accumulated an impressive 12 million hours of operation on the Boeing CH-47 and MH-47 Chinook helicopters.

The T55 engine has a rich history, with Honeywell having delivered the first T55 engine to the U.S. Army in 1961. Since then, the engine’s power has more than doubled, now classified as a 5,000-shaft horsepower engine. Honeywell continues to enhance the T55 family of engines, with ongoing development work on the T55-GA-714C engine. The next-generation 714C engine is expected to reach a 6,000-shaft horsepower class while consuming 8% less fuel than the current T55 engine.
