Google Implements New Measures to Combat Email Spam

Google has announced its latest efforts to tackle the persistent issue of email spam. In a blog post, Google product manager Neil Kumaran outlined the company’s plans to make it more challenging for spammers to send messages to Gmail users. These changes include requiring emailers who send over 5,000 messages per day to Gmail users to incorporate a one-click unsubscribe button in their emails. Additionally, senders will need to authenticate their email addresses by proving ownership of their domain name and avoiding IP address spoofing.

To further combat spam, Google may choose not to deliver messages from senders whose emails frequently receive spam reports and fall below a “clear spam rate threshold” of 0.3% of messages sent, as measured by Google’s Postmaster Tools. These measures are set to take effect in February 2024 and have already gained support from Yahoo, which plans to implement similar changes.
