GLP-1 Coverage in Employer Plans Could Nearly Double in 2024

Accolade, a Personalized Healthcare company, has released findings from a recent employer survey on the sentiment and adoption of GLP-1 medications. The survey revealed that while 81% of HR decision-makers believe their employees would be interested in GLP-1 medications, only 25% currently offer coverage for them.

GLP-1 medications, originally designed for diabetes management, have gained significant popularity as an effective drug for weight loss and obesity. HR decision-makers recognize the benefits of GLP-1 medications in controlling blood sugar, promoting weight loss, improving blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart disease.

The survey identified two main barriers to incorporating GLP-1 medications into employer plans: lack of trusted information and perceived high costs. Nearly half of the respondents cited a lack of information about other uses of the drug as a reason for not covering GLP-1s. They expressed a preference for obtaining information from doctors and medical organizations or publications. Additionally, 38% of HR decision-makers mentioned the costs associated with GLP-1 medications as a potential barrier.

Despite these obstacles, the survey indicated that GLP-1 coverage is seen as an attractive and desired benefit by most HR decision-makers. A significant majority (81%) believe that adding GLP-1 medications to their benefits package would enhance employees’ health and perception of healthcare benefits.

Employers who already cover GLP-1s (25%) expressed their intention to continue offering coverage, with 99% planning to do so. These employers reported a strong financial impact from adding GLP-1 medications, but also noted an increase in enrollment after their inclusion.

Accolade recommends that HR decision-makers approach the decision of offering GLP-1 coverage with ample research from physicians and medical organizations. They emphasize a comprehensive care perspective that considers the total cost and beneficial outcomes of well-managed employee health.

The survey, conducted by Savanta, involved 500 HR decision-makers from medium and large businesses across various industries in the United States.
