Glencore Explores Alternative Options for European Battery Recycling Hub

Glencore Plc, a leading mining company, is considering alternative options for a recycling hub in Europe for electric car batteries after facing setbacks in Sardinia, Italy. The regional government of Sardinia rejected a fast-track approval process for Glencore’s pilot project, which aimed to address the global shortage of key raw materials for electric vehicle production.

In collaboration with battery recycler Li-Cycle Holdings Corp, Glencore had planned to establish the recycling hub in Portovesme, Sardinia, by repurposing its existing production sites on the island. The project aimed to produce materials like lithium carbonate to support the growing demand for electric cars. The commissioning of the hub was originally scheduled to begin in late 2026 to early 2027.

However, the regional government’s decision to subject the demonstration project to a full environmental impact assessment has disappointed Glencore. The company expressed concern that the extended approval process could result in a delayed timeline, making the project economically unviable.

Glencore emphasized that it has always adhered to all regulatory requirements related to the demonstration project and remains committed to providing further details on the plant’s impact. The mining company assured that the site would be repurposed in full compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental standards.

Facing the possibility of project delays, Glencore is now exploring alternative options for establishing a European battery materials processing hub. The company aims to ensure that the project remains viable and contributes to meeting the increasing demand for electric vehicles and their sustainable production.

The regional government of Sardinia has not yet commented on the matter. Glencore’s commitment to sustainability and compliance with regulations remains unwavering as it seeks to find a suitable location for its recycling hub in Europe.
