ESPN Secures U.S. Broadcast Rights for New Golf League TGL

Walt Disney’s ESPN has announced that it has successfully acquired the U.S. broadcast rights for TGL, a groundbreaking primetime golf league created by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. TGL, developed in partnership with the PGA Tour, combines cutting-edge technology and live action in a thrilling two-hour match format.

The league features 18 PGA Tour players who will be divided into six teams, one of which will be owned by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and his wife, tennis Hall of Famer Serena Williams. This exciting collaboration between sports and technology is set to captivate golf enthusiasts and fans alike.

To kick off the TGL experience, ABC will air a preview show on December 30th. The inaugural match will then be broadcasted on ESPN network and ESPN+ streaming service during prime time on January 9th, the night following the College Football Playoff National Championship.

This strategic move by ESPN not only expands its live sports programming but also demonstrates Disney’s commitment to retaining its audience base amidst a challenging near-term environment. As Disney continues to navigate the evolving media landscape, it aims to enhance the profitability of its streaming business, elevate the quality of its films, explore direct-to-consumer streaming options for ESPN, and potentially restructure its television networks.

Financial details of the TGL rights deal have not been disclosed. Notably, TGL has garnered investment from prominent figures such as hedge fund owner Steve Cohen, further highlighting the league’s potential for success.

With TGL set to revolutionize the golfing world, fans can look forward to an immersive and captivating viewing experience. Stay tuned for more updates as ESPN prepares to bring this innovative golf league to screens across the United States.
