EMCORE Corporation Advances Photonic Integrated Chip (PIC) Technology for Inertial Navigation Solutions

EMCORE Corporation, the world’s largest independent provider of inertial navigation solutions to the aerospace and defense industry, has announced a significant advancement in Photonic Integrated Chip (PIC) technology. This breakthrough technology will be integrated into all of EMCORE’s open-loop Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG)-based products, enhancing their performance and reliability.

The development of PIC technology is the result of three years of dedicated research and development. It has been successfully integrated into EMCORE’s previous generation open-loop designs, leading to the launch of the TAC-450 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) series and the new TAC-450 single- and multi-axis FOGs. These products, equipped with PIC Inside™, offer improved reliability, durability, shock/vibration tolerance, and easier integration, making them ideal for challenging navigation applications.

The PIC technology is based on an integrated optical chip that replaces individual fiber optic components with a silicon waveguide system. This innovation simplifies the gyro assembly by eliminating handmade optical couplers, polarizers, and splices. The result is improved optical performance and enhanced environmental robustness.

This program covers the DSP-3000 series, DSP-17xx products, and GEO-FOG INS. The replaced optical circuit will carry a new 1-year warranty, ensuring customer satisfaction.
