Cloudian Delivers Groundbreaking Object Storage Performance and Efficiency with Next-Gen AMD / Micron Platform

Cloudian, in collaboration with AMD and Micron, has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding object storage performance and power efficiency. The latest version of Cloudian’s HyperStore 8.0 object storage software, combined with next-generation AMD EPYC™ 9454 CPUs and Micron 6500 ION SSDs, has achieved remarkable levels of performance and efficiency.

In recent testing, Cloudian’s HyperStore 8.0 software, running on a cluster of six power-efficient, single-processor servers, delivered over 17.7GB/s write and 24.9GB/s read speeds. This represents a significant 74% improvement in power efficiency compared to a traditional HDD-based system. These impressive results are particularly relevant for primary data applications that require high throughput, such as data analytics and AI/ML.

The collaboration between Cloudian, AMD, and Micron has produced an all-flash platform that not only meets the demands of real-time use cases but also reduces power consumption per GB transferred by over 74% compared to HDD-based platforms. As power costs continue to rise, especially in the EU, where electricity costs are expected to remain three times higher than previous years, power efficiency has become a crucial consideration for organizations.

Cloudian’s HyperStore 8.0 software incorporates advanced multi-threading technology and kernel optimizations to leverage the capabilities of the next-gen AMD EPYC 9454 processor. This processor, with its 48 cores and 128 PCIe lanes, provides revolutionary I/O bandwidth capabilities. Additionally, the collaboration takes advantage of Micron’s 6500 ION SSDs, which offer over 30 times more 4KB random write IOPS than competitive QLC SSDs.

The combination of these cutting-edge technologies creates energy-efficient and cost-effective solutions for modern software-defined storage deployments. Michael Tso, CEO of Cloudian, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Our customers need storage solutions that deliver extreme throughput and efficiency. This collaboration with AMD and Micron demonstrates that we can push the boundaries, delivering cutting-edge all-flash solutions that empower organizations to meet the ever-increasing demands of data storage and management.”

The 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors provide a range of features that complement Cloudian’s HyperStore 8.0 platform, including up to 1152 MB of L3 cache, support for up to 160 PCIe Gen 5 lanes, and AVX-512 instruction support for enhanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Machine Learning (ML) performance. Kumaran Siva, Corporate Vice President of Strategic Business Development at AMD, emphasized the collaboration’s significance, stating, “Our 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors are designed to power the most demanding workloads, and this collaboration showcases their capabilities in the context of object storage.”

Micron’s 6500 ION NVMe SSDs, the world’s first 200+ layer NAND data center SSDs, offer an optimal balance of capacity, performance, and efficiency. With 30.72 TB of storage and impressive read and write speeds, these SSDs address the growing data storage needs of IT departments while promoting sustainability. Jeremy Werner, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Micron’s Storage Business Unit, highlighted the exceptional performance and efficiency of Micron’s SSDs, stating, “Our collaboration with Cloudian and AMD highlights the exceptional performance and efficiency of our Micron 6500 ION NVMe SSDs.”

Cloudian’s HyperStore, known for its cloud-like scalability, advanced security features, and support for hybrid clouds, remains the preferred choice for organizations seeking cost-effective, flexible, and secure object storage solutions. The Object Lock feature in HyperStore defends data against encryption by ransomware, ensuring data integrity and security.

Cloudian will be making the HyperStore 8.0 evaluation software available this month. This collaboration between Cloudian, AMD, and Micron represents a significant milestone in the world of object storage, providing organizations with the performance, efficiency, and scalability required to meet the ever-growing demands of data storage and management.
