CISO Research Reveals 90% of Organizations Suffered At Least One Major Cyber Attack in the Last Year; 83% Report Ransomware Payments

Splunk Inc., the leading cybersecurity and observability provider, has unveiled its highly anticipated 2023 CISO Report. This comprehensive global research report offers valuable insights into emerging trends, threats, and strategies for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and other security leaders.

The report highlights the evolving role of CISOs in today’s complex threat landscape and dynamic market conditions. With 47% of CISOs reporting directly to the CEO, it is evident that organizations are recognizing the critical importance of cybersecurity and the need for strong leadership in this area. This close relationship between CISOs and top executives allows for better alignment of security strategies with overall business objectives.

According to Jason Lee, CISO at Splunk, CISOs have the opportunity to become champions who strengthen an organization’s security culture and foster cross-collaboration. By effectively communicating key security metrics, CISOs can guide boards in adopting emerging technologies like generative AI, which can significantly enhance cyber defense management and future-proof organizations against evolving threats.

One of the most intriguing findings of the report is that 86% of surveyed CISOs believe generative AI can address skills gaps and talent shortages within their security teams. By automating labor-intensive and time-consuming security functions, generative AI allows security professionals to focus on more strategic initiatives. Currently, 35% of CISOs are already leveraging generative AI for positive security applications, and an additional 61% plan to adopt it within the next 12 months.

The report also emphasizes the growing prioritization of cybersecurity within organizations. With 93% of CISOs expecting an increase in their cybersecurity budgets over the next year, it is evident that businesses are recognizing the need to invest in robust security measures to protect their digital assets and ensure resilience against cyber threats.

To provide a comprehensive understanding of the current cybersecurity landscape, Splunk conducted extensive research involving quantitative and qualitative surveys. The quantitative survey targeted 350 CISOs, CSOs, and other executive security leaders across ten countries, while the qualitative research involved in-depth interviews with 20 security leaders.
