California Governor Gavin Newsom Signs Historic Wave Energy Legislation into Law

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed California Senate Bill 605 (SB 605) into law, marking a historic moment for wave energy in America. The legislation, which directs the California Energy Commission to evaluate the feasibility of wave and tidal energy in the state, is set to accelerate California’s transition to 100% clean energy while creating high-paying jobs.

SB 605, introduced and authored by Senator Steve Padilla, aims to harness the vast potential of ocean energy as one of the largest untapped sources of renewable energy. The California Energy Commission will collaborate with state agencies and stakeholders to identify suitable locations for wave and tidal energy projects along the state’s coastline.

California has set ambitious targets for a 100% renewable and zero-carbon power grid, with a benchmark goal of 90% by 2035 and complete transition by 2045. As of 2022, over half of California’s total energy supply came from net-zero carbon and renewable sources.

Eco Wave Power, a leading onshore wave energy technology company, commends Governor Newsom for signing this legislation into law. The company’s Founder & CEO, Inna Braverman, believes wave energy has massive potential and is excited to showcase their pioneering technology at the Port of Los Angeles. Eco Wave Power plans to demonstrate that wave energy can play a significant role in combating climate change and powering communities with clean and reliable energy sourced from the ocean.

AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, a 35-acre ocean technology campus, is the primary sponsor of SB 605. It will soon be home to Eco Wave Power’s first pilot station in the United States, making it the first onshore wave energy station in the country. Terry Tamminen, President and CEO of AltaSea, expressed gratitude to Governor Newsom for recognizing the vast potential of wave and tidal energy in meeting California’s renewable energy goals and promoting economic growth through the blue economy.

SB 605 requires the California Energy Commission to produce a written report by 2025, providing findings and considerations to facilitate the development and increased use of wave and tidal energy technologies in the state. A study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) suggests that wave and tidal energy could generate 30% of America’s energy needs, with California’s wave energy potential alone capable of powering approximately 13 million homes.

Eco Wave Power, with its patented technology, is committed to assisting in the fight against climate change by harnessing the power of ocean and sea waves to produce green electricity. The company has already completed construction of its grid-connected project in Israel and received recognition from the Israeli Energy Ministry for its pioneering technology.

With this new legislation, California is leading the way in climate initiatives and demonstrating its commitment to exploring innovative renewable energy sources. The evaluation of wave and tidal energy will contribute to the state’s efforts to achieve a sustainable and clean energy future while creating new opportunities for economic growth and job creation.
