Brooke Shields opened up about why she ‘fought’ against her youngest daughter Grier’s desire to pursue modeling on Live with Kelly and Mark on Thursday.
While making an appearance on the talk show, the actress, 58 — who initially rose to fame after being a child model — admitted she did not want her daughter, 17, following in her footsteps.
Despite Grier’s now-blossoming modeling career, the Pretty Baby star — who celebrated her birthday on Wednesday — expressed her disapproval with the current state of the industry.
‘The rules have changed since I was [a model],’ she explained on her hesitancy as she appeared on the show to promote her new documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.
The Suddenly Susan alum also shares daughter Rowan, 20, with her husband and film director Chris Henchy, 59.

Shields also said that Grier has been busy doing ‘little things here and there’, but she still remains steadfast on her daughter not becoming a runway model.
‘I fought it for so long,’ she recalled. ‘It’s such a different industry now than it was.’
The Blue Lagoon star also pointed out that models have additional pressures to face nowadays compared to the past.
‘We didn’t have social media when I was a model,’ she said before noting that the current state of the modeling industry has become ‘a rat race’.
She revealed she worries and fears for Grier — who is ‘ridiculously stunning’ and wants to take to the catwalk.
In the past, Shields primarily pursued print modeling and did not walk on the runway in fashion shows.
‘That’s brutal and backstage is just brutal,’ she added. ‘I never did runway. I don’t think I would’ve been able to handle it.’
Because of the intensity of runway modeling, she advised her daughter against it.

Her experience: Shields also said she would not manage her daughter like her own mother did, and she told her daughter to sign with a modeling agency.
Eventually, she revealed that she ‘had to give in’ but compromised by setting strict ground rules and insisting her daughter still enrolled in college.
‘You are going to have a great work ethic,’ she remembered telling her daughter. ‘It’s not going to be comfortable, and you’re going to listen to me. Those are my rules.’
