Broncos star Reece Walsh picks strange way of defending foul-mouthed rant at referee in

Broncos star Reece Walsh has lashed out at NRL officials after his foul-mouthed rant during the loss to the Titans on Sunday landed him in deep trouble – and teammate Adam Reynolds is supporting him.

But instead of making his case on his own Twitter or Instagram account, the fullback couldn’t contain himself when a media organisation posted footage of his spray on Twitter, and hit back in the comments section on the post. 

The Broncos star was penalised for the outburst during the shock loss and will now face an anxious wait after being referred straight to the judiciary in a move that could see him rubbed out for State of Origin game three.

Referee Chris Butler penalised Walsh for obstruction late in the game, and the 20-year-old could then be heard on an on-field microphone hurling vile language in the ref’s direction, including the F and C words.

Brisbane was then marched back an extra 10 metres downfield for dissent with Butler heard telling captain Adam Reynolds, ‘He [Walsh] will go [for] the next one.’

Fox League later posted a video of the incident to social media, which Walsh replied to and explained that the referee had got it wrong.

‘I was not talking to the ref, I clearly say that! Can also see Patty [Carrigan, teammate] come over and talk to me,’ Walsh wrote.

Adam Reynolds backed him up with his own comment.

‘Show the full clip. Was talking to a player on the other team,’ Reynolds wrote.

Bulldogs veteran Josh Reynolds was fined $1000 earlier this season when he used an expletive to describe a decision by referee Grant Atkins.

Walsh was sent off during this year’s second Origin match for a headbutt on NSW star Jarome Luai and will now face the NRL judiciary on Tuesday night over the incident with Butler. 

It was a disappointing performance from the Broncos, who missed some great opportunities during the match.

Coach Kevin Walters expressed his frustration with his side’s attitude after the match. 

‘We haven’t earned the right as a team or a club to come here and put that performance on,’ he said.

Walters had attempted to fire up his side at half-time with a withering spray, but the Broncos couldn’t respond and the Titans were outstanding.

‘I am a bit angry,’ Walters said.

‘I don’t like that team who played today. It’s not who we are.’
