Travel expert Nicky Kelvin from The Points Guy recently made a TikTok video in which he dissects the pros and cons of introducing 5G on flights<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The flight mode era is coming to an end.<\/p>\n

The U.S<\/a> and the EU<\/a> have given the green light for the rollout of 5G<\/a> on planes, meaning that passengers will be able to use their phones at 38,000ft as they would at home, because flight mode will no longer be a requirement.<\/p>\n

As a result, passengers will be able to make phone calls at their leisure and use the internet without logging on to the airline’s Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n

Weighing in on the subject, travel expert Nicky Kelvin from The Points Guy<\/a> recently made a TikTok video<\/a> in which he dissects the pros and cons of introducing 5G on flights.<\/p>\n

In it, he quotes a recent YouGov poll <\/a>that quizzed passengers on whether they thought flights would be better or worse if they were allowed to make and receive phone calls – nine per cent said better, 57 per cent said worse, while 17 per cent said \u2018about the same\u2019. Nicky said that one of the benefits of having 5G on planes is that \u2018travellers are able to stay more connected\u2019.<\/p>\n

He explains that this means everything \u2018from speaking to family members in the sky to Googling odd topics that pop into their minds\u2019.<\/p>\n

Another advantage to having 5G is that \u2018you don\u2019t have to worry about dodgy Wi-Fi connections\u2019, Nicky reveals.<\/p>\n

He says: \u20185G is much clearer, and you don\u2019t have the risk of losing connection mid-flight.\u2019<\/p>\n

Thirdly, Nicky points out that access to 5G might make you less aware of how long the flight is. He says: \u2018It\u2019s the age-old saying, but time really does fly when you\u2019re having fun. Using your phone can be a great distraction for long flights (especially if you have kids).\u2019<\/p>\n

There\u2019s one overriding drawback to inflight 5G, according to Nicky. He says: \u2018The main issue \u2013 even though with today\u2019s technology the chance is low – [is that] there could be some safety issues in the 5G interfering with flight systems and communications.\u2019<\/p>\n

This is overall \u2018not something you want to play around with\u2019, he says.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the only con, however. Nicky notes that \u2018noise\u2019 could be a major issue, explaining: \u2018Not all users are respectful as others, and loud notifications or travellers using loudspeaker can be a huge pet peeve.\u2019<\/p>\n

Another issue could be \u2018bad behaviour\u2019, he adds, saying: \u2018Hopefully you won\u2019t have to worry about it, but people might get angry when making phone calls in the air, and take their annoyance out on those around them.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
