Avanti’s trains whisk passengers between Manchester Piccadilly railway station and London Euston in a little over two hours.

So is the plane realistic competition for such a short journey? Is the inevitable airport faff worth enduring?

Travel experts at The Points Guy (TPG) decided to find out by racing a British Airways aircraft against one of Avanti’s tilting 125mph Pendolinos.

And the footage of the 200-mile race to the UK capital is fascinating.

It begins at Old Trafford, home of the legendary Manchester United football club, and ends at Wembley Stadium – the largest in the UK.

Nicky said the train ‘was easy and comfortable, with very little faff’

Racing the Avanti Pendolino was Nicky Kelvin, Senior Head of Content at TPG, who paid £40 for a standard ticket initially but upgraded to Standard Premium for an extra £25.

What were the upsides?

He told MailOnline Travel: ‘It was very easy to reach Manchester Piccadilly train station using public transport.

‘Manchester has a solid tram network with a station at Old Trafford, with direct trams running to the main train station.

‘The train itself was easy and comfortable with very little faff. Being able to buy an upgrade for £25 is a great bonus.’

And what were the downsides?

Nicky said: ‘There were quite a lot of different modes of transport to be taken and stations to be navigated, which is fine if you’re travelling light, but with suitcases or big bags or children in tow it could make it a little less easy.

‘And there are no direct Tube trains from Euston to Wembley – and you have to take the (short) walk to Euston Square to catch one.’

‘Team plane’ for this venture was TPG Senior Marketing Manager Liam Spencer, with his economy ticket from Manchester to Heathrow Airport costing £74.

He told MailOnline Travel that there were several plus points to his experience.

He said: ‘Manchester Airport was easy to navigate and I breezed through security to boarding in no time at all.

‘In terms of speed of transportation, the plane can’t be beaten. I landed in London just 40 minutes after leaving Manchester – it was certainly one of the quickest plane journeys I’ve ever taken.’

Liam (above) said: ‘In terms of speed of transportation, the plane can’t be beaten. I landed in London just 40 minutes after leaving Manchester’

And the downsides?

He said: ‘Due to a very slow boarding process, my flight ended up taking off 25 minutes after the scheduled departure.

‘It was this delay that ultimately meant I narrowly lost out to the train.

‘And even without passport control, I still had to navigate my way out of Heathrow and wait for a taxi – another hurdle that you don’t have to face if taking the train.

‘When it comes to the environment, taking the train is a far friendlier option.

‘I would avoid flying such a short route in the future unless it was absolutely essential.’

Crackdown on the ‘wild west’ cryptocurrency industry is delayed

A crackdown on cryptocurrency has been delayed.

The Financial Conduct Authority said stricter regulation about marketing crypto would come into force next month but firms can apply for more time to comply with rules, such as a 24-hour cooling-off period.

It said companies could be given until January 8. The rules were due to take effect from October 8.

The delay is a blow to campaigners who have argued protections must be brought in imminently to help vulnerable consumers.

The FCA has criticised some firms.

The Financial Conduct Authority said stricter regulation about marketing crypto assets would come into force next month as planned but firms could apply for more time to comply

The Financial Conduct Authority said stricter regulation about marketing crypto assets would come into force next month as planned but firms could apply for more time to comply

‘We are concerned by the failure of many overseas and unregulated crypto firms to engage with us on the rules,’ said Lucy Castledine, director of consumer investments.

‘We’ll be taking action against firms illegally marketing to UK consumers’.

Breaches of the rules, which aim to make marketing of crypto assets clearer and more accurate, and ban incentives like ‘refer a friend’ bonuses, could be punished by an unlimited fine or up to two years in prison.

The watchdog reiterated that crypto assets are high-risk and buyers should be prepared to lose all their money.

Kanye West and his Australian ‘wife’ Bianca Censori have been banned for life by a Venetian boat rental company following their indecent exposure scandal in Italy last week.

The couple sparked controversy last Monday when they were spotted enjoying an amorous moment on a water taxi in Venice, with West exposing his bare buttocks in front of gawking tourists.

Images of the couple showed the American rapper, 46, seated at the back of the river taxi while his Australian so-called bride, 28, placed her head in his lap.

Venezia Turismo Motoscafi, the company that rented the boat to West and Censori, have since spoken exclusively to Daily Mail Australia and confirmed the couple are ‘no longer welcome’ aboard their boats.

In its statement the company condemned the pair’s bawdy activity, while confirming it was ‘completely unaware’ what occurred on the boat the photos were made public.

‘On board, the driver had to keep a lookout for traffic and did not see these obscenities. If this had happened, he would have immediately disembarked and reported the transgressors to those in authority.’

‘In addition, there was a third person on board the taxi, who accompanied Mr. and Mrs. West, who obstructed the captain’s view to the stern in any case.’

The third person was a woman who has been pictured chaperoning West and Censori during their Italian holiday.

The company went on to denounce the couple’s explicit display, saying: ‘We completely dissociate ourselves from such acts and behaviour.

‘Mr. West and his wife will certainly no longer be welcome on board our company’s boats,’ they added.

Venezia Turismo Motoscafi is one of Venice’s leading private navigation companies, boasting an impressive array of celebrity clientele, including Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.

It comes after online critics argued that Kanye’s flesh-baring display constituted ‘public indecency,’ a charge which comes with a fine of up to €309 (AU$520), according to the Italian Constitutional Court.

‘How are these two not arrested for lewd behaviour?’ one commenter complained, as another agreed: ‘Public indecency! Keep it for the privacy of your own home.’

Someone else added: ‘Italian authorities need to arrest them for indecency doing that lewd and disgusting behaviour in public. There are clearly crowds, kids probably saw.’

Yet another user complained: ‘What is the matter with them? Maybe time the police stepped in,’ as someone else asked: ‘Why won’t the Italian government police or someone stop them?’

Other users said the bawdy display was ‘disrespectful’ to residents of the conservative Catholic nation.

‘This kind of dumb stunt is what helps paint all Americans as having zero class or respect,’ one user lamented.

‘I wish the police would arrest these two for their ignorant behaviour. They are making a mockery of the country,’ another added.

Other concerned fans have questioned whether the bizarre display is proof that the rapper is ‘controlling’ Bianca.

‘Cant anyone see that both of these people need help? Where is this woman’s family and surely Kanye has people that are interested in his well being,’ one wrote.

‘Poor girl. She looks miserable,’ one commented, as someone else added: ‘Well she certainly doesn’t look happy.’

Another fan claimed Bianca ‘needs to get out of that sick relationship’ while someone else wrote: ‘How humiliating for you. That poor woman needs help. She looks miserable. Free Bianca!’

One user branded Kanye a ‘sicko’ for the explicit display.

Prior to boarding the boat, West was covered from head-to-toe in an all-black ensemble while Censori wore a knee-length trench coat which she teamed with a pair of nude heels.

However both shed their layers once getting on board, with Censori ditching her coat in favour of a a strapless nude-coloured number as West pulled down his pants which exposed his bare behind.

It appeared that things were getting very steamy as Censori rested her elbows on his knees while he was then seen cradling her head as they sailed along the river.

West and Censor have sparked fury among locals over the past month for their odd wardrobe choices while holidaying in Italy, with critics especially taking aim at Censori for ‘going around virtually naked’ in the conservative Catholic country.

The brunette has stepped out on several occasions with her bare breasts clearly visible beneath see-through mesh outfits.

Among them was the outrageous nude catsuit – which saw her forced to cover her nipples with a black cross-body bag.

There is speculation that West and Censori's Italian antics are part of an elaborate publicity stunt to promote an upcoming album and fashion line

According to major tourism website CIU Travel, locals find it ‘offensive’ to see visitors ‘wandering the streets in varying states of undress.’

The website reads: ‘Walking around in beach attire or, worse, shirtless, is a huge no-no in Italy, unless you have your feet buried deep in the sand.’

It remains to be seen whether West or Censori will face any form of official punishment for their latest over-the-top display.

The fashion designer — who is widely believed to be behind all of Censori’s recent and controversial looks — and his new muse were first romantically linked in January 2023 just months after his divorce was finalised.

However, the legality of the union is in question, as they did not file a marriage certificate.

Previously, Kardashian filed for divorce in February 2021 after six years of marriage.

Throughout their longtime romance, West often called her his ‘muse’ and heavily influenced her fashion choices.

The former couple share four children together — North, 10, Saint, seven, Chicago, five, and Psalm, four.

The Royal Naval College is bathed in sunlight as we arrive in Dartmouth, the port from which Crusaders set sail in 1190, to reclaim the Holy Land.

My own mission is less elevated and certainly more enjoyable. As a feeble-footed walker with a scrambled sense of direction, I am to be passed, like a baton in a relay race, from friend to concerned friend on a four-day walk along a modest 30-mile section of the South West Coast Path. It will take me from Dartmouth to Hope Cove, sampling Devon’s fresh-and-local culinary scene along the way.

The path, all 630 miles, is the longest trail in England and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Our chosen stretch is rich in motivation: the prospect of all that fish, crab and lobster, and the abundance of boutique dairies, wineries and distilleries garnering awards in this part of the world.

Sailing boats bob in the sparkling estuary, as Friend No 1 and I make for a waterfront watering hole, Embankment, to toast the start of our trip. This curious building was a railway station until 1972. It is, possibly, the only station in the world where you needed to cross a river to reach the train.

Our 14th Century lodgings, Bayards Cove Inn, offers an excellent dinner of smoked haddock fishcakes. Through these leaded windows 400 years ago, I might have watched the Pilgrims board the Mayflower at the cobbled quayside a few steps away.

Armed with an Ordnance Survey we set off next morning, first reaching 12th Century St Petrox Church, whose graveyard has views over the Dart Estuary.

It’s an easy walk along country lanes, flanked by drystone walls speckled with lichens. We descend to Blackpool Sands in time for lunch: cod and chips on a pristine Blue Flag beach. Families shelter behind stripy, 1950s-style wind-breaks – the scene is pure Beryl Cook.

Fortified, we continue through emerald velvet fields of unshorn sheep to Slapton Sands, where rehearsals took place for the D-Day Landings. The shingle is hard going but the sea air is invigorating.

At Torcross, a decision has to be made: do we take a short cut via the coast and risk being stranded by the tide or attempt the longer, forest route over the cliffs? No 1 advises caution and, by the time we reach The Cricket Inn at the fishing village of Beesands, parched, the only sensible antidote is a large Salcombe gin on the sea wall.

Dinner is a feast of fat whitebait, scallops and sea bream. I sleep well, the beam from distant Start Point lighthouse winking away.

The next morning, after breakfast (kippers), Friend No 2 and I make for the ghost village of Hallsands, which collapsed into the sea and is now inhabited by kittiwakes.

Rounding the point where seals bask on rocks, we persevere to East Prawle. This stretch to Gara Rock is dramatic and terrifying. The path narrows to 8 inches along cliffs carpeted in foxgloves, bluebells, vetch and acres of red campion.

No 2, it turns out, has got the short straw. She has to coax me over rocks as I try not to look down, fearing a plunge into those turquoise waters. To judge by memorial stones we pass, not everyone survived this rugged beauty.

I’m longing for concrete under foot. With huge relief we limp into Salcombe, that yachtie haven, and make for the Harbour Hotel. Never has a dinner of local cheese souffle and hake with crab herb crust, accompanied by a crisp Sharpham wine, been so well-deserved, – nor a bed seemed more inviting.

Thankfully, our schedule here is more a digestive than physical work-out, starting with the Salcombe Dairy chocolate factory, where Peruvian beans are hand-crafted into dark delights. Next door, I visit the Salcombe Distillery for a rum-making class, where we select spices and fruits to distil our own creation.

Then it is a short skip to Fish Quay for lunch at the wonderful, rough-and-ready Crab Shed.

It is when we are almost blown off a cliff near Bolt Head (tip: do not wear loose clothing) that Friend No 3 and I decide to cheat and taxi two miles to my last hotel, Soar Mill Cove. The afternoon is spent ambling down to the beach, where tired feet are cooled in crystal waters.

The final day dawns for our last leg: over grassy headlands to the fishing village of Hope Cove. We perch outside at the Lobster Pod for lunch of perfect simplicity: calamari, scallops and, of course, lobster – locally caught and fresh as can be. We clink celebratory glasses and agree: there’s nothing like good food as incentive for a healthy walk.

West Virginia man captures moment a giant fireball explodes in the early morning sky – and NASA says it came from a comet

An amateur astronomer was snapping images of the supermoon over West Virginia Wednesday morning when a giant fireball exploded in the sky as it fell from space.

Bill Stewart, from Ceredo, was perched on his rooftop to capture the brilliant moon when he saw a blazing streak in the sky that ‘made two audible booms.’

Stewart, however, was not a lone observer of the cosmic display – there are more than 70 sighting reports from nine US states, including Georgia and Ohio.

NASA has also acknowledged the fireball, revealing it was likely a comet fragment weighing 75 pounds that traveled southeast at 37,000 miles per hour.

Steward shared a video of the epic experience, telling SpaceWeather.com that the fireball broke through the night sky at 2:13 am ET.

‘The fireball made two audible booms,’ he said.

‘After one bright flash, it broke into three distinct fragments.

‘One remained bright as it descended below the horizon. It could have possibly touched down although I didn’t hear it impact.’

NASA’s Bill Cooke said the comet fragment ‘entered Earth’s atmosphere about 50 miles above the Kentucky town of Krypton, moving roughly southeast at 37,000 miles per hour.

‘The object traveled 65 miles through the atmosphere before disintegrating 30 miles above Duffield, Virginia.’

Cooke continued explaining that the fireball’s breakup generated about two tons of TNT.

The American Meteor Society, a non-profit founded in 1911 that collects reports of meteors and other cosmic sightings, shows 74 other people spotted the fireball early Thursday morning.

Reports came from Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Sheen A, from Delphia, Kentucky, reported her house shook immediately after she heard the boom.

Tennessee resident  April H shared: ‘It was the brightest and biggest meteor I have ever seen. It was the most elegant green ball arcing across the sky before it suddenly turned to a bright gold as it broke apart and disappeared.

‘From where I live, [in Unionville] it appeared to have been going over the southern end of Rutherford Co TN, headed East and ended near Hwy. 231S.’
