  • Production and shipping of the new watch created 75% less carbon emissions
  • New watches, which range in price from $400 to $800, will be available Sept 22

The newly unveiled updated Apple Watch Series 9 will be Apple’s first-ever carbon neutral gadget that requires a simple tap of two fingers to work.

The device, which will become available on September 22, was also made using renewable materials and clean energy, leading to a 75 percent decrease in the amount of carbon waste emitted.

And for the first time, users will be able to control the watch simply by tapping together the index finger and thumb on their watch hand.

The Series 9 will start at $399 while the Apple Watch SE will run you $249. The Ultra 2 model will set you back $799.

The Series 9 was designed with the tech giant's most powerful chip - the S9-Chp - that is twice as fast as the one introduced in 2022

Second to the newly unveiled iPhone 15, the new Apple watches were the stars of Tuesday’s big reveal in Cupertino, California.

The double-tap touchless feature made the biggest splash.

The user need only tap their two fingers together to answer or end a call, set a timer, play music, or snooze an alarm. The small action also allows the user to take a photo with the camera remote on the watch.

The gesture feature relies on the company’s machine learning algorithm called Neural Engine which uses an accelerometer to measure the vibration between the fingers and a heart sensor to detect unique wrist movements and changes in blood flow where the two fingers tap together.

Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said: ‘We’re introducing our best Apple Watch lineup, with incredible new capabilities and technological advancements, including a new double tap gesture, brighter display, on-device Siri, as well as our first-ever carbon neutral products.

‘Whether users are upgrading from earlier models or buying their first, there’s never been a more compelling time to experience Apple Watch.’

Apple also touted its environmentalism wins that propelled it closer to its goal to make all of its products carbon-neutral by 2030.

The watch was made using 100 percent clean electricity while a third was made using recycled or renewable materials, which Apple boasts resulted in a 75 percent decrease in the amount of carbon emissions produced in manufacturing and shipping.

A company statement said: ‘Emissions were reduced from the three biggest sources of greenhouse gases — materials, electricity, and transportation.

‘The small amount of emissions remaining are offset with high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects.

‘Apple Watch packaging has been redesigned to be 100 percent fiber-based, and a new logo on the packaging indicates models that are carbon neutral.’

While the company touted its strides toward meeting its eco-conscious goal, the Tuesday reveal follows years of bad press regarding Apple’s reliance on inhumane working practices in cobalt mines in Africa.

Cobalt is used in a wide array of mobile phones and electric vehicles – almost every tech gadget that uses a lithium-powered battery.

The annual reveal has been a company staple since the original iPhone was unveiled in 2007. The unveiling of the new iPhone 15, which features an updated camera, a brighter retina display, new colors, and a range of other additions, was the headlining event.

Justin Bieber couldn’t hide behind a pair of eclectic pink sunglasses on Friday as he watched Coco Gauff play Elise Mertens of Belgium in the third round of the 2023 US Open at the Arthur Ashe stadium in Flushing, New York.

His wife, model Hailey Bieber, was right by his side, sporting a black leather jacket and looking chic as ever.

She kept a well manicured hand on her husband’s knee as he hid his hair under the same polka dot baseball cap he wore earlier on Friday when he took his glamorous wife out for a boat trip in the Hamptons

The 26-year-old Tommy Hilfiger model’s face looked positively dewy as she watched the match diligently, flaunting a silver necklace with a large B pendant.

The Yummy hitmaker kept his ensemble simple, letting his sunglasses steal the show as he looked comfy in a white tank top, black leather jacket, and blue jeans.

Stephen Baldwin’s daughter matched her husband’s casual outfit vibes, sporting a similar white tank top with thin straps and her own leather jacket.

Justin appeared to want to stay under the radar during the tennis match, hiding under his leather jacket humorously when a fan approached the couple.

The Arizona born beauty couldn’t stop laughing as her husband attempted to comically evade fans.

Although the A-list pair couldn’t stay anonymous for long, they have been in New York the past week for a heartwarming reason.

Five years ago in September, the couple finally made their relationship official, tying the knot in a New York City courthouse.

The Zoolander 2 star had popped the question in July of 2018 when he whisked the leggy socialite off to the Bahamas for the romantic proposal.

The Stuck With U music video star revealed this year that she wanted to have kids with her singing superstar husband, but the fear of online hate held her back.

Telling the Sunday Times that, ‘I want kids so bad but I get scared. It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends.’

The thought of her future kids having to deal with nasty comments online was overwhelming for the Ralph Lauren model, who added, ‘I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.’

Emphasizing that she wanted to raise kids with Justin where they feel, ‘they feel loved and safe.’ the statuesque beauty made it clear that she wasn’t ruling out kids altogether.

She noted that this year had challenged her with some of her ‘saddest, hardest moments.’

However, her doting husband has been a constant at her side.

The entertainer helped his wife earlier in June by appearing in ads for glazing milk, a new product in her Rhode skincare line.

Not only that, but the tattooed singer and songwriter traveled to New York this week to support his hard-working wife on her latest Rhode skincare press tour.

Meanwhile, other A-list celebs spotted at the match were Zac Efron, Brooks Nader, Wanda Sykes, Katie Holmes, Anna Wintour and Huma Abedin, among others.

Meanwhile, the 59-year-old star of The Upshaws watched the match between Tommy Paul Vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a pinstriped blue and white button up shirt as she also hid her face behind boxy sunglasses.

Only Fools and Horses legend John Challis’s widow has revealed that thieves stole a watch from her nephew’s body after he died last month.

John’s wife Carol Challis broke the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, that her husband’s ‘friend’ and ‘my nephew Si’ had his belongings stolen after he passed away in July this year.

She said: ‘Simon’s personal belongings were returned to us today from Germany,at last.

‘Sadly his wristwatch was missing. Disappointing that someone should feel the need to help themselves.

‘God bless these two, my much loved husband and his friend,my nephew Si.’

Carol revealed the news of Simon’s shock death last month, saying; ‘Rest easy Simon and may you forever ride the best waves down in Falmouth’.

She added in another post: ‘Thinking of dear Simon and hoping we can bring him home soon.

‘He was a great skateboarder and especially loved his surfing down in Cornwall and lived life ‘to da max’.What a bloody waste.’

John Challis died in September 2021, aged 79, after a long battle with cancer.

He was best-known for his portrayal of second-hand car dealer Boycie – a cigar-smoking businessman with a mocking laugh who butted heads with Del Boy – in the beloved British sitcom, starring alongside Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Challis was born in Bristol but when he was one, the family moved to south-east London.

He attended the state boarding Ottershaw School near Woking, Surrey – and upon leaving school he worked as a trainee estate agent before becoming an actor.

Matildas versus Sweden: When are they playing? Where can I watch it? Your ultimate guide to the third-place Women’s World Cup playoff

The Matildas are potentially 90 minutes away from finishing third at a World Cup.

It is an achievement to be celebrated, but standing in their way are Sweden, who will be equally desperate to add the honour to their international football CV.

In their previous meeting, Australia won 4-0 in November last year thanks to a brace from Caitlin Foord.

Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler also found the back of the net in Melbourne.

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE MATCH BEING PLAYED?

Brisbane Stadium – normally known as Suncorp Stadium until FIFA had its name changed for the duration of the tournament. Kick-off is 6pm AEST on Saturday, August 19.

Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord (right) will be key figures for the Matildas against Sweden in the World Cup playoff for third place in Brisbane on Saturday

HOW CAN I WATCH IT?

Coverage is on Channel 7 and Optus Sport as well as live sites across the country, including the Sydney Cricket Ground (gates open at 5.30pm) and AAMI Park in Melbourne. The action can also be viewed on the broadcaster’s streaming service, 7Plus.

Federation Square won’t be open due to poor behaviour from some supporters during the semi-final defeat against England earlier this week.

Adelaide’s Festival Plaza is an official FIFA live site, as is Canberra’s Garema Place, Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands and Perth’s Forrest Place.

HOW HARD WILL IT BE TO BEAT SWEDEN?

According to FIFA’s current world rankings, the Swedes sit in third spot, with the Matildas in 10th.

The Swedes lost 2-1 to Spain in their semi-final thanks to a stunning goal from the Europeans late in the match, but previous to that they beat Japan 2-1 in the quarter-finals and took a huge scalp when they defeated the USWNT on penalties in the round of 16.

In the group stages the Scandinavians handily beat Argentina and Italy after starting their Cup with a 2-1 win over South Africa.

It’s safe to say they go into the playoff as one of the form teams in the tournament, despite their heartbreaking loss to the Spaniards.

WHO ARE THE KEY PLAYERS FOR BOTH TEAMS?

No prizes for guessing who when it comes to Australia – captain and superstar striker Sam Kerr. Her combination with Caitlin Foord in the final third will be crucial.

Coach Tony Gustavsson may also call on his fringe players, with the likes of Emily van Egmond, Tameka Yallop, Cortnee Vine and Charli Grant all potential starters.

When it comes to Sweden, goalkeeper Zecira Musovic has been a tournament standout. Defensive midfield pairing Filippa Angeldal and Elin Rubensson will look to dictate the tempo from the opening whistle.

WILL THE MATILDAS BE FAVOURITES?

According to BetRight, no. Peter Gerhardsson’s team are paying $2.40 to win, with Australia the outsiders at $2.90, and a draw earning punters $3.40.

WHAT PRIZE MONEY IS UP FOR GRABS?

If the Matildas finish third at the World Cup, each player will receive $180,000 each.

DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA’S FEARLESS PREDICTION:

Matildas 2-1 win, with goals from Sam Kerr and Hayley Raso.

Attendees at the hacking conference DefCon in Las Vegas last weekend kept getting mysterious prompts on their iPhones as requests to connect to a phantom Apple TV that was nowhere in sight.

Turns out the messages — which looked like a nearby Apple TV seeking approval to sync with users’ Apple ID or their password-protected accounts — were, in reality, from a homemade $70 transmitter designed to trick Apple’s Bluetooth security.

Some of the software security experts who were targeted by the prank at the conference, said they felt ‘abused,’ while others thought it was ‘hilarious’ but ‘annoying as hell.’

The perpetrator, a fellow DefCon attendee, has come forward to explain their intention: to draw attention to a serious vulnerability they hope Apple will correct.

‘If a user were to interact with the prompts, and if the other end was set up to respond convincingly, I think you could get the “victim” to transfer a password,’ said the prankster, a security researcher who goes by Jae Bochs on social media.

Until Apple corrects the vulnerability, according to Bochs, the best course of action for iPhone users, or any Apple product user, is to be careful when trusting the ‘Control Center’ feature on any device running iOS.

Attendees at the hacking conference DefCon 2023 kept getting mysterious prompts on their iPhones. The messages, which looked like a nearby Apple TV seeking approval to sync with their password-protected accounts, actually came from an improvised $70 transmitter (above)

For their part, Bochs was unrepentant, writing on the decentralized social media platform Mastodon‘Glad I could add a little harmless WTF to everyone’s day.’

‘To offer some reassurance,’ Bochs also posted, ‘this was built with two purposes – to remind people to *really shut off* Bluetooth (i.e. not from control center) and to have a laugh.’

To completely switch off Bluetooth on an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook, Apple users can’t trust the seemingly convenient toggle on Control Center, iOS’s quick-access panel available to users with a simple swipe.

Instead users have to go into their Settings and search for the complete Bluetooth menu to truly prevent their device from engaging with other Bluetooth devices nearby, such as the hacker’s forged Apple TV.

Bochs told TechCrunch they built the device out of an off-the-shelf Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, a portable battery, two antennas, and one Linux-compatible Bluetooth adapter.

The total cost, Bochs estimated, was about $70.

At the heart of the hack, Bochs explained, is lax security coded into Apple’s current protocols for Bluetooth low energy, or BLE, which allows any Apple device to attempt to connect with other nearby Apple devices via Bluetooth.

Apple describes these as ‘proximity actions’ because the intent is to add convenience for users trying to sync nearby devices, such as two friends with iPhones at a bar or an iPhone user trying to control their Apple TV or home wireless speakers.

‘Proximity is determined by BLE signal strength, and most devices intentionally use lowered transmit power for these to keep the range short,’ Bochs said, adding, ‘I don’t :)’

The range for Bochs’ $70 improvised, fake Apple TV extended to 50 feet, plenty of room to ensnare unsuspecting DefCon attendees waiting in line for events around the convention center.

Typically, the BLE signal range for an iPhone is about 33 feet, and for an Apple TV box that number can be much lower.

The device ‘builds a custom advertisement packet that mimics what Apple TV etc. are constantly emitting at low power,’ the security researcher told TechCrunch. This allows it to pose as an Apple device and trigger pop-ups on nearby devices.

‘There’s no data collected,’ Bochs said, ‘it’s just sending out BLE advertisement packets that don’t require pairing.’

In theory, however, a similar device could maliciously collect personal user data — and given growing concerns over the iPhone’s upcoming NameDrop feature, Bochs hopes to have a new ‘proof of concept’ devise that will probe NameDrop’s security lapses in time for next year’s DefCon.

Announced for Apple’s iOS 17 update this September, NameDrop is a new feature that promises to streamline sharing contact information, making it as easy as tapping two iPhones together. But the added convenience comes with some risk.

‘Hoping by next DC to have it working with the new iOS17 ‘NameDrop’ features, and potentially do something similar for Android (at least certain models),’ Bochs said. ‘Either way I’ll probably submit it for a talk.’

DefCon 2023 attendees warned one another about the fake Apple TV via X (formerly Twitter)

DefCon 2023 attendees warned one another about the fake Apple TV via X (formerly Twitter)

DefCon, which is among the largest annual gatherings of hackers worldwide, is no stranger to wild pranks, and some praised Bochs’ stunt as ‘some OG #DEFCON shenanigans.’

The conference, despite protests from attendees, is often a major scouting location for government intelligence agencies, including the National Security Agency (NSA), that are looking to recruit the best and brightest among cybersecurity and penetration experts.

But some attendees this year expressed more confusion and concern over the Apple Bluetooth flaw, including Dan Guido, the CEO of security research firm Trail of Bits.

‘I think [Bochs] abused a bunch of users when [they] should take [their] complaints to Apple,’ Guido told TechCrunch.

But others, like the iOS application security researcher who goes by the online name NinjaLikesCheez, saw it as part of DefCon’s grand tradition of teaching and exposing security loopholes by experience.

‘I think it’s hilarious. It was annoying as hell but also reminded me that control center is bad,’ the Netherlands-based coder said.

Your Apple Watch or Fitbit wristband is a hotspot for harmful bacteria linked to fever, diarrhea and a weakened immune system, according to a new study.

Researchers swabbed a range of wristbands, finding they are teeming with E. coli and Staphylococcus spp, which can lead to pneumonia.

The tainted bands were made from plastic, rubber, cloth, leather and metal.

The gym-goer showed the highest counts for bacteria linked to staph infections that can cause sepsis or even death, emphasizing sanitizing wristbands after working out.

However, the team found those made of gold and silver were the most sanitary.

A new study of wristbands, sampled from 20 randomly selected participants, found that as many as 60 percent were harboring E. coli bacteria. Above, a sampling of the wristbands tested: rubber (top left), cloth (bottom left), metal (top right) and plastic (bottom right)

The study's senior author, biological sciences professor Nwadiuto Esiobu, singled out physically active healthcare workers as a group that might especially wish to take heed of the study's findings, to avoid infecting at-risk patients or the immunocompromised

The study’s senior author, biological sciences professor Nwadiuto Esiobu, singled out physically active healthcare workers as a group that might especially wish to take heed of the study’s findings, to avoid infecting at-risk patients or the immunocompromised

‘The quantity and taxonomy of bacteria we found on the wristbands show that there is a need for regular sanitation of these surfaces,’ said the study’s senior author Nwadiuto Esiobu, a professor of biological sciences at Florida Atlantic University.

Esiobu singled out active, gym-going healthcare workers as a group that might especially wish to take heed of the study’s findings in an effort to avoid infecting at-risk patients.

‘The ability of many of these bacteria to significantly affect the health of immunocompromised hosts indicates a special need for health care workers and others in hospital environments to regularly sanitize these surfaces,’ she said.

Nearly all of the wristbands sampled, 95 percent, were contaminated with some bacteria, with the most common bacterial species found being ‘skin residents’ like genus groups Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas.

While Esiobu and her coauthors said that the prevalence of ‘Staphylococcus spp’ bacteria on 85 percent of the wristbands ‘was not unexpected,’ the presence of ‘Pseudomonas spp’ on 30 percent of the wristbands was a ‘public health concern.’

The intestinal bacteria E. coli, which commonly finds its infectious pathway through fecal-oral transmission and was found on 60 percent of the wristbands sampled, was also cause for alarm, they said.

The highest average infected wristbands yielded 34,600 bacterial colonies formed per square centimeter of surface (cfu/cm2) and 15,200 cfu/cm2 on rubber and plastic bands, respectively, when samples were grown in a petri dish-like culture.

Metallic gold and silver wristbands had about zero to 18 cfu/cm2.

‘On the average,’ the authors wrote, ‘the trend of bacteria load was cloth ≥ plastic ≥ rubber ≥ leather > metal.’

At left, a bacterial culture was taken from the plastic wristband of a 39-year-old male CrossFit fan and, at right, a sample from the rubber wristband of a 25-year-old female CrossFit enthusiast. After 30-hrs incubation, the plastic sample had no Staph aureus bacteria, but the rubber did

The study's senior author believes that other commonly used personal wearables, such as earbuds or cell phones, 'should be similarly studied' for their infectious transmission potential

The entirety of their results led the researchers to turn to disinfectant methods.

They wrote that both Lysol Disinfectant Spray and 70 percent ethanol ‘were highly effective regardless of the wristband material with 99.99 percent kill rate within 30 seconds.’

Apple cider vinegar proved less effective but could do the job in about two minutes.

According to the study, there was no significant difference between men and women in terms of who had the most bacterial-laden wristbands.

The single most useful predictor of which band had the most bacteria, they report, was the texture of the material and the person’s activity or recent hygiene prior to the testing.

‘Plastic and rubber wristbands may provide a more appropriate environment for bacterial growth as porous and static surfaces tend to attract and be colonized by bacteria,’ Esiobu said.

‘Other potential forms of bacterial transmission and facilitation of infection, such as earbuds or cell phones,’ she noted, ‘should be similarly studied.’

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch England‘s Lionesses face off against Spain, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

The Lionesses made history after beating Australia 3-1 today securing their place in England’s first World Cup Final since 1966. Ella Toone scored the opener for Sarina Wiegman‘s side before Sam Kerr netted a stunning equaliser midway through the second half to revive Australia’s hopes of reaching the final.

But Prince William, who is president of the Football Association, is set to watch the final on the television.

No specific reason has been given for the decision, but attending the final would mean a lengthy flight to Australia for a short period of time.

Following the match, The Prince of Wales praised the team. He wrote on Twitter: ‘What a phenomenal performance from the – on to the final! Commiserations to, you’ve played brilliantly and been fantastic co-hosts of this World Cup. W’

The royal is currently on a summer break and travelling across the world is something those in the public eye have previously been criticised for.

Tackling climate change is listed as one of the prince’s priorities.

Veteran royal journalist Phil Dampier has criticised the royal’s decision to miss out on Sunday’s final, which will be broadcast at 11am.

On social media he wrote: ‘If Prince William as President of the FA isn’t going to the Women’s World Cup final we should be told why not. It’s a long way and Australia hasn’t had a visit by him or The King since Charles came to the throne. That’s the problem. If the final was in Europe he’d be there!’

The prince also sat out on last year’s men’s World Cup in Qatar, due to the controversies surrounding it. But it was reported that he ‘might’ have attended if they managed to reach the final

King Charles congratulated the squad. In his message, he said: ‘My wife and I join all our family in sending the mighty Lionesses our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the World Cup, and in sharing our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

‘While your victory may have cost the magnificent Matildas their chance for the greatest prize in the game, both teams have been an inspiration on and off the pitch – and, for that, both nations are united in pride, admiration and respect.’

Like Prince William, many fans will be opting to stay in England and enjoy the game at home or at a fanzone.

The Lionesses have clearly captured the hearts and minds of a nation once again, as all three Boxpark fan zones in London sold out eight minutes after the final whistle.

A Boxpark spokesperson said that 2,500 tickets across their sites in Shoreditch, Wembley and Croydon sold out in under 10 minutes.

Ecstatic England fans have poured on to Twitter to celebrate the achievement, and several supporters used memes to wind up the tournament hosts following their World Cup exit.

A fan zone at Boxpark Croydon turned into an impromptu dance floor on Wednesday as the Lionesses confirmed their place in the final, knocking out the host nation.

The only person who seemed to be sitting down when the final whistle was heard at the south London venue was a lone Australian at the front of the zone.

The team’s official Twitter account posted three images from behind the scenes in Sydney.

It was captioned ‘Good times never seemed so good!’ – lyrics from the Neil Diamond classic which has become something of a celebratory anthem for England in recent tournaments.

Boss Sarina Wiegman was clearly keen to keep a lid on celebrations, even telling defender Lucy Bronze to ‘stop jumping’ and to immediately begin preparations for Sunday’s showpiece final.

Australian fans were left crying into their beers as goals for England from Toone, Hemp and Alessia Russo sealed victory and put the Lionesses 90 minutes away from lifting two major trophies in just under 13 months.

England will now take on Spain for the trophy this Sunday at 11am UK time, after they beat Sweden 2-1 yesterday to book their trip to the final.

The match comes just over a year after England won Euro 2022 by beating Germany and is England’s first World Cup final since the men’s famous triumph back in 1966.

Lionesses fans at the fan zones put children on their shoulders, danced on tables and sang football hits following the historic victory.

It is a terrifying sight: an e-bike battery spewing out toxic white smoke and erupting into flames with such ferocity that it could prove fatal.

That is the warning from electrical safety experts, who say if such a fire breaks out it can destroy a room in minutes.

To make matters worse, a new survey by the charity Electrical Safety First has found that hundreds of e-bike and e-scooter owners are at risk of inadvertently sparking such a blaze by using incompatible chargers.

Almost half (43 per cent) of those questioned said they used a charger that wasn’t supplied with their bike or scooter when it was sold, prompting fears that such a device might not be compatible with the voltage of their battery.

Of the 430 people who admitted to doing so, 1 in 3 knew that the charger they were using was not compatible with their e-scooter’s battery, while 1 in 5 didn’t know.

A new survey by the charity Electrical Safety First has found that hundreds of e-bike and e-scooter owners are at risk of inadvertently sparking such a blaze by using incompatible chargers

The danger of incompatible chargers, safety experts warn, is that they risk supplying a battery with too much voltage, which can then spark a catastrophic process called thermal runaway.

This is where the battery goes into an uncontrollable self-heating chemical reaction which leads to a fire breaking out that can destroy a room in minutes.

It is for this reason that Electrical Safety First is calling for a ban on universal chargers for e-bike and e-scooter batteries, whereby a charger comes with multiple outlets to connect to various batteries.

The charity has shared a video of what such a blaze can look like to coincide with the release of its new report, Battery Breakdown, which looks at ways to crackdown on a spate of deadly e-bike fires across Britain.

In the footage, a toxic smoke that can be incredibly harmful if inhaled is first shown pouring from the battery.

It is then only a matter of seconds before sparks erupt and the battery bursts into flames.

Such is the ferociousness of thermal runaway that the battery shoots around the room as the huge amount of energy is expelled.

‘Incorrectly charging your e-bike or e-scooter battery comes at a dangerous cost,’ said Giuseppe Capanna, of Electrical Safety First.

‘Due to the large amount of energy stored in these batteries, the risk of fire is significantly higher if the battery becomes unstable.

‘It’s essential that you use a compatible charger, ideally the one that that came with the device and never block any exit ways when charging, the results could be fatal.’

London firefighters have put out blazes from faulty e-bikes and e-scooters every two days since the start of this year

London firefighters have put out blazes from faulty e-bikes and e-scooters every two days since the start of this year

What can often compound the problem, campaigners say, is that many e-bike and e-scooter owners charge their devices in areas that risk blocking escape routes, such as a communal hallway or staircase in a block of flats.

More than half of those surveyed (52 per cent) also admitted to charging their device overnight while they are sleeping – which heightens the danger because they have less time to respond if a fire breaks out.

Just over a quarter (28 per cent ) said they charged their device in a hallway inside their home, whilst more than 1 in 10 (14 percent) do so in their bedroom.

Electrical Safety First recommends charging e-bikes or e-scooters away from vital escape routes — ideally in an outhouse where possible.

Scott Angus, 32 from London, revealed how he had a lucky escape after a neighbour’s e-bike burst into flames in a communal hallway of a converted Victorian house last year.

He and his partner had to jump out of a second-floor window with their dog after their escape route was blocked.

‘I was woken up around 1am to the strong smell of carbon. I opened the door and all I could see was a wall of thick black smoke. If that smoke had got inside our flat any sooner, I probably wouldn’t be here,’ Mr Angus said.

‘An e-bike battery was being charged on the ground floor in the building’s communal hallway caught fire, it blocked our escape route, and we had no way out except for the windows.’

Mr Angus revealed that he and his fellow neighbours had to be rescued by firefighters with ladders.

‘When we got down, all I could see was chaos. The front door to the building had been blasted off. The fire brigade were trying to put the fire out and I could see lots of individual batteries all over the floor. They looked like shotgun cartridges,’ he added.

‘My partner damaged her back when she jumped and she’s had issued with it ever since, it’s impacted her quality of life.

‘We just feel lucky to have escaped with our lives.’

Others have not been so lucky, however.

Eight people have died in Britain so far this year as a result of e-bike battery fires.

On New Years Day, Sofia Duarte was killed when an e-bike in her home burst into flames, whilst a mother and two children lost their lives in Cambridge this year in a fire that is believed to have been caused by a charging e-bike.

At first it looks like a bizarre silver monolith poking out of the water.

But on closer inspection, a massive humpback whale can be seen doing a rare ‘headstand’ in astonishing new footage.

Australian YouTuber and TikTok star Brodie Moss filmed himself excitedly approaching the creature in his transparent kayak off the Australian coast.

‘What the hell is going on?’ he says as he gets closer and closer to the tail, which is almost completely motionless as it sticks out of the water.

At one point, Moss dips his handheld camera under the surface to reveal a breathtaking sight – the whale’s huge body with its offspring at its chest.

It is called 'tail sailing' and it's rarely been captured on film. It's unclear why whales do it - but there are several theories

It is called ‘tail sailing’ and it’s rarely been captured on film. It’s unclear why whales do it – but there are several theories

What are humpback whales?

The humpback is a species of baleen whales with a distinctive body shape.

Humpbacks usually range from 39 to 52 feet in length and weigh approximately 36 metric tons.

It is known for its elaborate courtship songs and displays. Males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time.

Humpbacks undertake long migrations between polar feeding grounds in summer and tropical or subtropical breeding grounds in winter.

One or both of the whales can be heard singing, a common behaviour used as a way of communicating.

‘My heart is beating so fast,’ Moss says in the video as he’s merely yards away from the animal.

‘I think that’s a whale tail – it’s just come up and stuck its tail up and it’s just not going anywhere.

‘This is the craziest thing that’s ever happened.’

The smaller humpback whale, likely the offspring, is also seen encircling the gigantic creature as it’s performing its ‘headstand’.

‘The little baby’s just swimming around it – what the hell!’ Moss adds.

It’s unclear exactly where the encounter took place, although Moss is part of the YBS Youngbloods YouTube channel based in Exmouth, Western Australia.

Moss says in the video that the transparent kayak ‘is making the whale act so weird’, but he later clarifies that it’s an example of ‘tail sailing’.

Rarely observed by humans, it involves whales lifting their tails above the water for long periods of time.

Why exactly they do it is unknown, although there are some leading theories, according to marine biologists.

It could be a way for whales to rest, nurse their young or just have a rest while trying to stay cool.

Dr Denise Risch, a marine mammal ecologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban, told MailOnline: ‘Like so many other things when it comes to whale behaviour, it is currently not known why they do this.

‘It has often been observed in humpback whale populations in their winter breeding grounds and also in other species such as southern right, gray and bowhead whales.

‘One paper describes the behaviour shown by humpback whales in Brazil. There, all social classes except for calves can be observed showing this behaviour.

‘Generally, it is thought that the whales could be resting or regulating their temperature with this behaviour, but there is no clear evidence for either hypothesis.’

Dr Risch also said it could help sound waves travel through water.

‘Male humpback whale singers have been observed singing upside down and to produce higher amplitude sounds when they do, so the position of the tail may be incidental,’ she said.

On Reddit, nature fans joked that the behaviour was like putting ‘your feet out of bed when they’re a bit hot but in reverse.’

One said: ‘Maybe it’s just their version of sticking your hand outside a car window and feeling the wind on your fingertips.’

Another posted: ‘Maybe it feels good having all his blood rush to his head.’

It’s not the first time a humpback whale has been caught ‘tail-sailing’.

Another specimen off the coast of Maui, Hawaii was filmed in 2016 engaging in the peculiar behaviour as a calf swam around it.

According to scientists, tail-sailing is common among southern right whales, although it’s rarer among humpbacks, which can live for 80 or 90 years.

Adults of the species (officially known as Megaptera novaeangliae) range in length from 39 to 52 feet and weigh about 36 metric tons.

The males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time, although both males and females use some form of vocalizations.

Along with the blue whale, the fin whale and others, the humpback whales is a baleen or ‘filer feeder’.

Baleen whales have a filter-feeding system inside their mouths instead of teeth, which they use to collect shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish from the sea.

In comparison, toothed whales, such as the beaked whale and sperm whale, bite their food or even swallow it whole.

In 2021, researchers revealed a new species of baleen whale in the Gulf of Mexico called Rice’s whale, although they said there were fewer than 100 left.

What are baleen whales and how do they eat?

Baleen whales mostly eat small creatures such as zooplankton and small fishes, which they come across in large swarms in the ocean.

All baleen whales have baleen instead of teeth which they use to collect shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish from the sea.

These bristly baleen plates filter, sift, sieve or trap the whales’ favourite prey from seawater inside their mouths.

Baleen is made out of keratin, the same protein that makes up our fingernails and hair.

The baleen of the bowhead whale can be be 13 inches (four metres) long.

Baleen whales including the humpback, minke, fin and blue whales

They have clearly visible throat grooves which allow their mouths and throats to expand and balloon out as they gulp mouthfuls of seawater and food.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Caris LeVert is claiming to be the victim of a robbery after his $93,000 watch was stolen during a party at his Los Angeles-area home earlier this month, according to TMZ.

The 28-year-old Columbus, Ohio native discovered an open watch case in his bedroom during the festivities and the rare Peugeot timepiece was missing. TMZ reports that police were told someone was seen entering LeVert’s bedroom earlier in the evening.

The case is reportedly under investigation by the LAPD. Department spokespeople did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment early Thursday morning.

LeVert – a relative of O’Jays singer Eddie LeVert – is a significant rotation player for the Cavs, averaging 30.2 minutes, 12.1 points, 3.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds en route to a playoff berth for Cleveland. The Cavaliers were ultimately bounced in the first round by the New York Knicks.

The former University of Michigan star is just the latest athlete to be robbed in Los Angeles.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green's LA-area home was reportedly looted of more than $1 million worth of watches, jewelry and other items during Super Bowl LVI in 2022

Police believe the crew were also responsible for several other celebrity home burglaries, and said they found a list containing the names and addresses of more than a dozen athletes, musicians and actors the teens planned to burglarize.

A search warrant of their home uncovered more than $50,000 in cash, plus watches, jewelry and designer purses.

Captain Lillian Carranza, with the Los Angeles Police Department Commercial Crimes Division, said during a press conference in 2018 that the crew picked their victims by studying their touring and travel schedules and watching their social media postings.

‘The burglars believed no one would be home, and the homes would contain sought after valuables that they might be interested in,’ she said.
