  • The 2021 US Open champion has taken up the famous tile-based game Mahjong

Emma Raducanu has unveiled her new-found love of Mahjong having recently picked up the tile-based game during a trip to China

The 20-year-old tennis star is currently recovering from undergoing surgery on both her wrists and ankle.

Currently situated at 194 in the WTA rankings, Raducanu has not played since April, where she was knocked out in the first round by Jelena Ostapenko at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The 2021 US Open women’s singles champion underwent surgery in May, posting photos of herself sporting casts on both her arms and ankle on social media

Since then she has been taking steps to recover and was last month seen for the first time since her operation back playing tennis during a training session

While working on her comeback, the British tennis player has also been travelling and recently visited her mother’s home country, China, to see her family.

She visited Shenyang, where she opened up on how she had been playing her new-found hobby, Mahjong, with her grandmother.

‘I recently learned Mahjong and feel most at home and my true self when I’m around the kitchen table at my grandma or aunt’s place in Shenyang playing with family,’ Raducanu told Porsche.

While tennis stars spend plenty of time on the court, the 20-year-old also unveiled some of the other things she gets up to when she’s not competing or training.

When asked what her hobbies were, she said: ‘They include Mahjong, piano, reading, learning new cultures and languages, motorsport, driving and diving.

‘On a day off, I like to practice some piano… I just started to learn and have a long way to go but I really love the melodies once you get it.

‘Also having picked up Mahjong and now enjoy playing with whoever I can find. And I just love driving.’

Disney has unveiled its latest cruise ship – with renderings revealing dazzling interiors.

Disney Treasure, Disney Cruise Line’s sixth ship, is slated to set sail from Florida on her inaugural cruise in December 2024.

The 4,000-passenger ship, which measures 1,119ft (341m) in length and weighs approximately 144,000 gross tons, is being constructed at Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard.

The vessel, a sister ship to Disney Wish, which launched last year, promises to ‘unlock the far-reaching realms of Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel and embrace dynamic tales from beloved Disney Parks attractions, through captivating and immersive experiences on the high seas’. A statement adds that Disney Treasure will ‘harness a design concept that calls upon the bold and heartwarming stories of beloved Disney characters’.

First-of-its-kind features on board include a restaurant inspired by the film Coco, an Aladdin-themed ‘grand hall’ and a Zootopia-inspired sweet shop.

The overriding theme of the ship is ‘adventure’, a decision made to ‘honour Walt Disney’s legendary passion for travel and exploration’.

This begins with the food offering. Unique to the ship is the aforementioned Plaza de Coco, the ‘world’s first theatrical dining experience’ themed around the 2017 hit Disney and Pixar animation Coco.

Detailing what to expect from the immersive restaurant experience, Disney says that the story of lead character Miguel and his family will continue where it left off on screen as they take diners on ‘colourful, music-filled journeys that celebrate family memories and togetherness’. Diners will enjoy ‘festive’ dinners with dishes that offer a ‘modern twist’ on traditional Mexican fare and a line-up of live entertainment.

Another brand-new addition to the cruise line is Jumbeaux’s Sweets, a candy shop inspired by the ice cream parlour featured in Disney’s ‘Zootopia’.

For the adults on board, new to the cruise line is the Periscope Pub, a bar that’s inspired by the 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Here, ‘guests will dive into the mythical depths of uncharted oceans amidst the submarine-styled interiors and take a look at the watery world below through an intriguing glass ceiling’. Craft beers and light bites will be served.

Themed cocktails can be sipped at Skipper Society, another brand-new feature of the ship. This bar – complete with campground-style furnishings – is inspired by the Jungle Cruise boat ride attraction at Disney theme parks around the globe.

Many features echo those that are found on sister ship Disney Wish. For instance, Worlds of Marvel, Disney Cruise Line’s immersive Marvel-themed dining experience, which ‘celebrates favourite Avengers characters and stories’, is returning.

As is 1923, a restaurant named for the founding year of Walt Disney Animation Studios. It’s said to be ‘steeped in the glamour of Hollywood’s golden age’.

There are two adults-only eateries on board – Palo Steakhouse, offering ‘authentic Italian dining’, and Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, said to ‘offer the most luxurious dining experience on board, featuring a gourmet menu crafted by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement’.

The new ship will also feature ’24-hour room service, speciality treats, [and] gourmet cafes’, a statement reveals.

Beyond dinner and drinks, the vessel is chockablock with family-friendly entertainment venues that are said to immerse guests ‘in worlds both real and imagined, through interactive storytelling, character encounters and Broadway-style theatrical adaptations of inspiring Disney adventures’.

The Aladdin-themed Grand Hall – the ship’s ‘most prominent gathering space’ – will ‘host dedicated shows, character encounters and musical performances’.

Another new addition to the fleet will be Sarabi, a two-storey entertainment hub named after the lioness matriarch from The Lion King. The space, said to ‘evoke the natural beauty and openness of the savanna’, will be the setting for themed games such as ‘Family Time Game Show’ and ‘Villains Game Night’.

Return features on board, meanwhile, include the Walt Disney Theatre, billed as an ‘opulent show palace that will come alive with original Broadway-style productions developed exclusively for Disney Cruise Line’. Shows include ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Disney Seas the Adventure’, which are both said to be ‘Disney Cruise Line fan-favourites’.

Disney hints that there’ll be an all-new theatre show coming to Disney Treasure – but details of the production have yet to be released.

Just as they can aboard Disney Wish, guests can experience the Hero Zone sports venue and the Wonderland and Never Land Cinemas, where first-run films from Disney, Pixar and Marvel are screened.

The Oceaneer Club – another return feature for kids and teens – is a ‘wonderland of immersive spaces’ that allows children to ‘enter the captivating worlds of [their] favourite Disney stories’.

It features the Marvel Super Hero Academy, where kids can train to become superheroes; Fairytale Hall, a collection of prince and princess-themed activity rooms; Walt Disney Imagineering Lab, where little ones discover the secrets of the ‘creative masterminds’ behind Disney theme parks; Star Wars: Cargo Bay, where children can be immersed in their own Star Wars story; and Mickey and Minnie Captain’s Deck, a maritime-themed playground.

On the upper decks of the ship guests will find an ‘expansive district themed to Mickey and friends’.

Herein lies the AquaMouse ride, a returning feature from Disney Wish. It has a brand-new theme aboard Disney Treasure, telling the story of the ‘Curse of the Golden Egg’, which ‘follows Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse on a zany misadventure into an ancient temple’.

Describing the ride, Disney says: ‘Powerful jets will propel two-person ride vehicles through 760ft (231m) of winding tubes, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the ship below.’

There’s also a Toy Story-themed district – just as there is aboard Disney Wish – designed for families with young children that will include a splash zone, wading pool, family waterslide and smoothie bar.

The Quiet Cove adult area is another return feature from Disney Wish. ‘This secluded adults-only district will feature a luxurious infinity pool, poolside bar and chic café,’ says Disney.

For even more rest and relaxation, adults can retreat to the Senses Spa, ‘a tranquil oasis offering indulgent spa and beauty treatments’.

For a workout, the Senses Fitness gym will offer ‘state-of-the-art exercise and wellness facilities’.

After action-packed days, guests will look forward to a good night’s sleep. A statement says the ‘luxurious accommodations aboard Disney Treasure will strike an inviting balance between modern design and nostalgic charm with a fresh, natural colour scheme and custom artwork that will entice guests to peer beyond their staterooms into fantastical worlds from heartwarming Disney adventures’.

It’s said that most of the ship’s 1,256 staterooms will offer an ocean view, and 70 per cent will feature a verandah space.

There are four different styles of ‘royal’ suites on board that are designed to ‘pay tribute to the faithful feline companions of daring Disney characters’. For instance, the Bagheera Royal Suites are inspired by the panther from The Jungle Book and the lush forests he calls home.

Those who splash out on the concierge experience will stay in ‘indulgent’ suites with interiors inspired by the ‘majestic grasslands Simba calls home in The Lion King’. They’ll also enjoy access to ‘an exclusive concierge lounge with a private sun deck that serves as the perfect place to relax, sip a cocktail and enjoy a variety of food and beverages throughout the day’.

Disney Treasure will embark on a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida, on December 21, 2024, followed by an inaugural season of itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club members can book a cruise from September 12, 2023, while bookings will open to all guests on September 20, 2023. For more information visit disneycruise.com.

Cruise line Hurtigruten Norway has unveiled pictures of its first zero-emission ship – and it features extraordinary retractable sails fitted with solar panels.

The 164ft- (50m) tall sails are one of several ‘firsts and improved solutions’ on the electric vessel – due to launch in 2030 – that ‘do not exist on cruise ships today’, including ‘AI manoeuvring’ and ‘retractable thrusters’.

Renderings showcase the striking design of the 443ft- (135m) long vessel, which will boast 270 cabins to hold 500 guests and 99 crew.

The ship will run on a combination of energy from 60-megawatt battery and wind technology, charging up with renewable energy when it’s docked in port. Battery levels will be displayed on the sides of the cruise ship.

In general, tech will have a big part to play in the vessel. Through an interactive mobile app, passengers will be able to measure their own water and energy consumption and control the ventilation in their cabins.

Hurtigruten Norway says that enhanced AI manoeuvring will mean that the bridge, where the captain and crew steer the ship, will likely be much smaller than it typically would be on other cruise ships. The company – which runs cruises along the Norwegian coast to the Arctic Circle – says that the AI ‘will also capture data to help improve docking operations’, mimicking the operations of an aeroplane cockpit.

It’s said that passengers will enjoy ‘superior guest comfort’ on board the ‘streamlined’ zero-emission ship, which will boast ‘ample outdoor space’ and large window-filled areas for taking in ‘spectacular’ views mid-voyage.

The vessel won’t be the world’s first zero-emissions cruise ship – that accolade goes to Northern Xplorer, a vessel being built in Portugal’s West Sea shipyard that’s due to launch in 2026.

Hurtigruten Norway plans to operate an entirely zero-emission fleet in time as part of its environmentally-oriented ‘Sea Zero’ project. Two of the cruise line’s seven ships have been upgraded to run on battery-hybrid power, with a third set to be modernised with this system this autumn.

Meanwhile, the five other vessels are being outfitted with technologies that will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 25 per cent and nitrogen oxides by 80 per cent.

In 2019, sister company Hurtigruten Expeditions introduced the world’s first battery-hybrid-powered ship, MS Roald Amundsen. The Expeditions arm now has three battery-hybrid ships in its seven-ship fleet.

Commenting on the unveiling, Hedda Felin, the CEO of Hurtigruten Norway, said: ‘When we initially announced the “Sea Zero” project over a year ago, we were faced with the challenge of not knowing which technologies would be available to us in 2030. Our task was to pave the way for new innovations and enhance existing ones to align with our sustainability objectives.

‘While some of these technologies have reached a relatively advanced stage, they still necessitate dedicated research and development to ensure their successful implementation within the maritime context. On the other hand, certain technologies are still in the early stages and require fundamental research and thorough testing. Following a rigorous feasibility study, we have pinpointed the most promising technologies for our groundbreaking future cruise ships. We are committed to delivering a ship that surpasses all others in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability within just a few years.’

Apple unveils its long-awaited augmented reality headset at WWDC: New Vision Pro is powered by your eyes, voice and hands – no controllers needed

  • Apple unveiled its augmented reality headset at its WWDC conference
  • Vision Pro doesn’t use controllers, but is powered by your eyes, voice and hands

It has been years in the making, but Apple has officially debuted its AR headset at its annual World Wide Developers Conference.

The headset, called Apple Vision Pro, is the first of its products you look out for and not at, CEO Tim Cook said Monday at the live event.

The headset lets users merge the real world with a digital one controlled by their eyes, voice and hands.

Vision Pro has a single, thick band on the back of the head, connecting a large screen that sits over the eyes.

Apple revealed its long-rumored augmented reality headset Monday. Vision Pro has a large screen that lies over the eyes and does not need controllers

The headset lets users merge the real world with a digital one

‘With Vision Pro, you’re no longer limited by a display,’ Cook said, introducing the new headset.

Rumors speculated that the headset would feature a mixed reality, but Apple has focused solely on AR.

Apple calls it ‘spatial computing,’ which blends content into the space around you.

Users move their eyes and hands and say specific commands to power their journey through the augmented experience.

Apple’s human interface chief Alan Dye said that users will select content inside the goggles with their eyes, tap their fingers together to click, and gently flick to scroll.

And the EyeSight feature shows people in the room your eyes, unlike Meta’s Quest, which features an opaque visor.

Vision Pro’s exterior screen goes dark when a user is fully immersed in a virtual world.

When a person approaches a user in full virtual mode, the headset will show the user and the outside person to each other.

‘You’re never isolated from people around you,’ Dye said. ‘You can see them, and they can see you.’

For work uses, Apple showed how the headset can be used with a trackpad and keyboard to work like a traditional computer with multiple displays.

These days, most smartphones are kitted out with facial recognition technology, multiple cameras and wireless charging systems.

But back in the 90s we were much more easily impressed, with handsets causing a stir if they had a camera at all.

However, classic phones are having somewhat of a comeback with Gen Z users, who have dubbed the simple devices ‘dumbphones’.

Amid this retro revival, Nokia has launched a new, hot pink flip phone called the Nokia 2660 Flip.

Its launch comes exactly 25 years on from the launch of Nokia’s first ever flip phone back in 1998.

Nokia has launched a new, hot pink flip phone called the Nokia 2660 Fllip. Its launch comes exactly 25 years on from the launch of Nokia’s first ever flip phone in 1998

Nokia 2660 Flip: Key features

Colours: Black, Blue, Red, Pop Pink and Lush Green

Size: 108mm x 55mm x 18.9mm (4.2in x 2.1in x 0.7in)

Display: 2.8in

Camera: 0.3MP rear camera

Battery life: 26 days

Price: £64.99 ($80.24)

Nokia first announced the new phone last year, but has released it in two new colours today – Pop Pink and Lush Green – to celebrate the 25-year anniversary.

‘There’s been a surge of interest in flip phones, and we believe that the interest is coming from a need to take a break from the constant flow of incoming digital notifications, social media posts and more,’ said Lars Silberbauer, Chief Marketing Officer from HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones.

‘People want more simplicity, more face-to-face time, more time to think, and time to have an uninterrupted conversation!

‘I’m sure we all have examples where a beautiful life moment has been spoiled by a distraction or notification.

‘That’s why we are re-introducing the Nokia 2660 Flip, to give people these important beautiful life moments back.’

The Nokia 2660 Flip features a clamshell design and is just 4.25 inches long when folded.

It flips open to reveal a 2.8-inch display alongside large physical buttons, without a touchscreen in sight.

While it does feature a rear camera, this is just 0.3MP – significantly lower than the iPhone 14’s 48MP lens.

However, Nokia hopes this will be one of the greatest selling points for the phone, claiming the low quality camera is perfect for ‘lo-fi Y2K style pictures.’

The phone may also appeal to festival-goers, thanks to its whopping 26-day battery life and drop-proof polycarbonate shell.

And before you panic, thankfully Nokia has confirmed that its fan favourite feature has been included in the Nokia 2660 Flip – the classic Snake game.

The Nokia 2660 Flip will be available to buy in Pop Pink this week and in Lush Green next week for £64.99 ($80.24).

Retro phones have been making a comeback since 2017, when Nokia released a new version of the 3310 phone, 17 years after the original version was launched.

That same year, Motorola revealed that it was bringing back its iconic RAZR phone, joining forces with British firm, Binatone, to create the Binatone Blade.

Experts claim that one of the biggest draws of these basic phones is the nostalgia associated with them, as well as the significantly lower price tag than smartphones.

People are also finding they don’t need all the functionalities offered by more expensive smartphones, and would rather have the simplicity of a paired-back device.

Speaking to CBS Philadelphia, Darren Zygadlo, creator of onecutreviews.com, said: ‘I think there’s a lot to be said for a product that makes you nostalgic.

‘We’ve hit a point where we can pretty much do everything with these phones and I think some people are finding themselves saying, “What do I need all that for?”‘

Disney is planning to open a Pixar themed hotel at their property in Anaheim, California – complete with a designated ‘Finding Nemo’ splash area and other references to iconic films.

The company announced Thursday that the current Paradise Pier Hotel will soon become Pixar Pier Hotel at the Disneyland Resort.

The hotel will include a new water play-pad area modeled after ‘Finding Nemo,’ a new American-style eatery, and an outside court for families with Pixar touches.

According to Disney Parks officials, construction is already underway and the hotel will officially reopen to the public in winter.

The Pixar-themed hotel news comes just one week after Disney announced the shuttering of Galactic Starcruiser, the pricey Star Wars hotel in Orlando, Florida.

The 15-story hotel which overlooks Disneyland has already seen major changes in recent weeks as the exterior has been given a facelift with bright colors.

Paradise Pier Hotel will remain open to the public throughout the transition.

In addition to being the United States’ only fully Pixar-themed hotel, Disney Parks officials said guests will still have early access to Disneyland.

Disney offers early access to guests at their own hotels in California and Florida.

The first new portion of Pixar Pier Hotel to open will be the ‘Finding Nemo’ area.

‘Later this summer, overnight guests can splish and splash at an all-new water play area inspired by “Finding Nemo” where the fan-favorite fish and his friends frolic alongside families,’ a release from the company’s blog states.

One feature of note in the water park is a 186-foot-long slide that features Hank from ‘Finding Nemo’ at the top.

At some point before the hotel fully opens under its new theme, a play court centered around Pixar’s short films will be available for guests.

‘Interactive games and imaginative free play celebrate favorite friends from “La Luna,” “Bao,” “For the Birds,” and “Burrow,”‘ the release states.

‘And when it’s time to relax, guests may enjoy food and drinks under the love-struck umbrellas from “The Blue Umbrella,”‘ the release continues.

The court will also be the ‘ideal spot’ to watch the Disneyland fireworks each night.

The new restaurant, Great Maple, will serve breakfast lunch and dinner and is described as ‘upscale comfort.’

Additional details about amenities and decor will be offered in the coming months.

The redesign may be an effort to match the current Pixar Pier inside Disney’s California Adventure park, which originally opened in 2001 as Paradise Pier.

Pixar Pier reopened to the public in 2018 after a renovation to theme it around Pixar films with rides like ‘Incredicoaster, Toy Story: Midway Mania, and Inside Out: Emotional Whirlwind.

The re-imagination of the West Coast hotel comes exactly one week after Disney announced the closure of the expensive Star Wars hotel in Florida.

Galactic Starcruiser has been open for just a year but will close in September.

While guests routinely gave the hotel high ratings for its immersive atmosphere and presentation, it was criticized for its exorbitant price.

A two-night ‘voyage’ could cost up to $20,000 for a ‘tricked out’ suite.

Average rooms for a family of three or four ran about $1,200 per person.

In March,  DailyMail.com reported that Disney was struggling to fill up bookings and had reduced availability for the fall.

The hotel, which is located near Disney World in Orlando, Florida, created major buzz when it first opened over its price and its amenities.

Included in the two day experience is a cabin or suite, ongoing immersive entertainment, food and beverages in and out of the space, and admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The experience also offered guests a chance to jump into the Star Wars universe and partake in the Resistance against Kylo Ren and the First Order.

Galactic Starcruiser also won a Thea Award for outstanding achievement in a themed entertainment space.

Let the good times roll! Samsung unveils incredible rollable display concept for laptops and tablet PCs

The animated, unfurling organic LED (OLED) screen might remind some of the wizard world’s Daily Prophet newspaper from Harry Potter

Samsung Display revealed their Rollable Flex concept this week, a monitor that rolls up and unspools like a scroll, or a tiny yoga mat.

The device rolls up to about 2 inches (49 mm) and rolls out to a maximum vertical length of 10 inches (254.4 mm) — five times its storage height.

Past foldable or slidable screens have at their best only been able to offer up a three-times scalability as their form factor.

With Rollable Flex, Samsung hopes they can help consumers by making larger devices like laptops, tablets and display screens smaller and more easy to carry.

The company says that the device’s secret is a carefully engineered O-shaped axis, around which its display wraps like the world’s most expensive sheet of toilet paper.

‘We were able to turn a difficult-to-carry large-sized display into a portable form factor,’ Samsung Display said, ‘by making it rollable.’

But Rollable Flex is not the first scroll-like screen on the market. Other firms have ventured into this space before, including South Korean flat-screen TV maker LG, which wowed CES for years with a gigantic 65-in rollable TV concept piece.

After two years of teasing at trade shows, LG’s 8K definition, rollable Signature OLED R television finally went to market in South Korea, at the eye-popping retail price of $87,000.

Samsung showed off Rollable Flex for the first time this week, alongside a host of other wiggling, bendable new tech during SID Display Week 2023, an industry showcase in Los Angeles.

Samsung Display also unveiled a new foldable phone prototype, Flex In & Out, which can fold both inward and outward 360 degrees, and the Flex Hybrid, which merges both foldable and slidable technologies.

There’s no word on when Samsung might make their Rollable Flex display available to consumers, but promise that they will let the good times roll soon enough.
