Biden tears into ‘extreme’ House Republicans over looming shutdown

President Joe Biden once again ripped House Republicans Tuesday and warned against a government shutdown, with funding set to run out September 30th if lawmakers can't reach a resolution. 'In just about a week, we could be facing a government shutdown if Republicans in the House Representatives don't do their job. There's no reason for us to be in this position,' he inveighed in a new video Biden released on his official account on the former Twitter site. Biden cited his earlier talks with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, which resulted in agreement on spending levels. He warned against the potential toll on the military and on government services, as the White House prepares to try to capitalize on the prospect of chaos in the Capitol.

'Now, there's a small group of extreme House Republicans who don't want to live up to that deal. So they're determined to shut down the government – shut it down now. And it makes no sense,' he said, speaking from the Oval Office in a video with multiple camera cuts. Biden said he was prepared to do his part by House Republicans ' refuse to stand up to the extremists in their party.' In a shutdown scenario, military members would be on duty 'but not get paid,' Biden said, in just one of the federal impacts the White House has been rollign out this week. 'And frankly, that's adding insult to injury.' Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday came to the Senate floor to warn against a shutdown, after earlier observing shutdowns haven't worked out well for Republicans in the past.

'Over the years, I’ve been pretty clear in my view that government shutdowns are bad news whichever way you look at them,' McConnell said. 'They don’t work as political bargaining chips. They create unnecessary hardships for millions of Americans. For example, nearly 46,000 servicemembers and 22,000 civilian workers in my home state of Kentucky who earn federal government paychecks. And they hardly ever produce meaningful policy outcomes at the end of the day,' he continued. 'A government shutdown would be an unnecessary disruption of the important work on the Senate’s agenda. So I would urge each of my colleagues to work this week to avoid one.'

He spoke while on the other side of the Capitol, House Republicans struggled to find a way forward. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would put a short-term continuing resolution (CR) on the floor to fund the government beyond September 30. But McCarthy, facing pressure from his conference, would likely include provisions to bolster border security. 'What's concerning to me is that there are people in the Republican Party who will take the position of President Biden against what the rest of Americans want,' McCarthy said Tuesday. The speaker can only afford to lose four Republican votes and still pass a party-line CR loaded up with spending cuts. But more than a quarter of Republicans have blasted a temporary funding bill, including Donald Trump loyalist Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.). Biden's video came a day after he dared Americans to stop electing Republicans if the government careens into shutdown next weekend.

'Funding the government is one of the most basic, fundamental responsibilities of the Congress and if Republicans in the House don't start doing their job, we should stop electing them,' Biden said in remarks at the White House . The government will run out of money on September 30 if the House and Senate do not agree on spending legislation to send to the president's desk. The president pointed to the debt ceiling deal he made with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, which set funding caps for fiscal year 2024. But the deal roiled some House conservatives who demanded McCarthy write up 12 separate spending bills at caps lower than those agreed to in the debt ceiling legislation. 'Now, a small group of extreme House Republicans, they don't want to live up to that deal and everyone in America could be faced with paying a price for that,' he said. 'We made a deal. We shook hands. We said this is what we're going to do and now they're reneging on the deal, which is not much of a surprise these days.'

Democrats have launched an all-out campaign to lay blame on Republicans for a government shutdown. Earlier the Biden campaign accused House Republicans of 'gleefully letting Donald Trump function as their chief political strategist at the expense of American families.' Five days before a government shutdown, it's not clear the House is any closer to passing a spending deal than it was last week. Last week Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., warned shutdowns 'have always been a loser for Republicans politically' and that they've 'never produced a policy change.' Speaker Kevin McCarthy is expected to take yet another gamble with a rule vote that would advance four separate spending bills on Tuesday, though it's far from clear the rule would pass.

The speaker would need to flip five Republican holdouts who voted 'no' on a rule vote for the defense spending bill last week, a rule vote that failed twice in 48 hours. The rule vote that tees up debate on spending bills typically passes with support from almost everyone in the majority party. But the House GOP has struggled to push through a rule vote three times this year. The rule vote for the military, the Department of Homeland Security, State and agriculture on Tuesday night will take the temperature for how the rest of the week could play out for House Republicans. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , R-Ga., has already said she is a 'hard no' on the rule because it includes 'blood money' for Ukraine.

McCarthy had said he would strip $300 million to train Ukrainian soldiers from the defense spending bill and hold a separate vote on it on Friday. But he did an about-face and decided to leave the money in their as he realized it would be too difficult to strip that and the Ukraine funding in the bill for State Department funding. The other GOP 'no' votes include Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Eli Crane (Ariz.), Matt Rosendale (Mont.) and Dan Bishop (N.C.) and it's not clear if any of them have changed their mind this week. Even if they are able to begin debate on the bills, it's far from clear they could actually pass them. And if all 12 appropriations bills were passed by the House, a daunting feat in itself, the government would still shut down because the Senate would never take up and pass those bills by Saturday night.

Meanwhile, McCarthy is pushing forward with a Republican-only continuing resolution (CR) that would keep the government open and give his conference more time to push through spending bills. The Senate, meanwhile, is prepping a bill that could advance a Democrat-led CR and put pressure on McCarthy to put it on the floor. And House moderates have begun to prep their own bipartisan CR plans and look at ways to advance them without the blessing of leadership. Some moderate Republicans have said they would join with Democrats on a discharge petition, meaning they could force a CR vote on the floor if five Republicans and all Democrats agree to it. McCarthy has urged his colleagues to fight against a shutdown, even as some seem open to closing the government to get what they want. Trump urged Republicans on Truth Social Sunday: 'UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN!' 'You have to keep the government open. I mean, if people want to close the government — only makes them weaker,' McCarthy said. 'Why would they want to stop paying the troops or stop paying the border agents or the Coast Guard? I don't understand how that makes you stronger. I don't understand what point you're trying to make.' Read the full story: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12563653/Biden-tears-extreme-House-Republicans-saying-theyre-determined-shut-government-McConnell-calls-shutdowns-bad-news-poor-bargaining-chips.html?ito=msngallery

Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Rippon made history this weekend as the oldest ever contestant to perform on the BBC ballroom show.

And though the broadcaster, 78, floored viewers and judges alike with her impressive flexibility and THAT high leg kick, she has admitted that her ageis something that ‘does worry’ her on the show.

Angela told Radio Times that she has wanted to do the show for years but has only been given the opportunity now.

She told the publication: ‘The first words out of my mouth were, “Why didn’t you ask me ten years ago when I was a lot younger?”

‘I’m doing Strictly this year because it’s the first time they’ve asked me.’

But despite her late-coming to the programme, Angela is determined to let nothing hold her back.

She continued: ‘I look at the younger people and I know I’m not as fit or strong – that’s just a medical fact. But I play tennis, I go to pilates and ballet classes, so I’m pretty fit for someone of my age.

‘I’ve told my pro partner, Kai, there are things I can do, and things I can’t. I just want to do everything properly. I’ve told him, “Challenge me.”’

Angela, who hosted the original version of the programme Come Dancing, has been partnered with professional dancer Kai Widdingtron.

Angela and Kai performed the Cha Cha Cha to Shirley Bassey‘s version of the Pink! song, Get the Party Started and received 28 points out of 40 on Saturday.

During the routine, Angela shocked the judges and viewers when she showcased her incredible flexibility and stretched her leg over head head.

And it appears their relationship may take plenty of credit for Angela’s glowing performance.

She explained: ‘I love him already. We clicked when we met… We laughed all through our first meeting. I’m a very happy bunny that it’s Kai.

‘I told the producers, “I need someone strong, patient and with a sense of humour.” He’s got all those qualities, and he’s a brilliant dancer and choreographer. He and his partner, Nadiya Bychkova, are both fabulous.’

As for what’s next after Strictly, Angela explained that she simply wants to continue working, in a profession she ‘adores’.

She said: ‘People told me, “They’ll never employ anyone over 50.” Well, there’s me, Gloria Hunniford and Julia Somerville, and we’re in year 15 of Rip Off Britain – we’re still hanging in there.’

On Saturday, Angela wowed viewers with her performance.

She looked sensational in silver fringe mini dress as she performed to Shirley Bassey‘s cover of Pink’s Get The Party Started before kicking her partner lifted her leg for the dramatic finale.

With the duo impressing the duos scoring 28 for their performance which saw them briefly at the top of the leader board.

Taking to Twitter one fan said:  ‘I need some tips off Angela Rippon. I’d love to dance like she does and I’m literally half her age!’.

While a second wrote: ‘Angela Rippon’s leg though!’.

Someone else joked:  ‘When I grow up I want to be Angela Rippon’.

And: ‘I want Angela Rippon’s legs!’.

What a star! Despite her late-coming to the programme, Angela is determined to let nothing hold her back and wants to be 'challenged'

What a star! Despite her late-coming to the programme, Angela is determined to let nothing hold her back and wants to be ‘challenged’

It comes after Angela admitted she is finding Strictly training ‘very gruelling’ and her legs ‘feel like they’re going to collapse.’

Speaking in an interview, Angela shed some light on how her training with professional partner Kai is going.

She told The Mirror: ‘My legs feel like they’re about to collapse.

‘I know what I should be doing, I know how it should be feeling, it’s actually making my legs do it to the music. I’m just getting cross and frustrated.’

Angela continued: ‘I’m exhausted. There are bits of me aching that I didn’t know I had. I’m enjoying doing it and I’m fine with the bits that I get right. But I get very angry with myself when I absolutely muck it up and do it wrong.’

Angela’s Strictly stint comes 47 years after she stunned the 27 million viewers of Morecambe and Wise’s 1976 Christmas special by emerging from her newsreader’s desk to perform a high-kicking dance routine, in an era when journalists never ventured into light entertainment.

A motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker is found in Capitol BATHROOM

  • Resolution on vacating McCarthy from his speakership was found in a bathroom under the House floor next to a coffee on a baby changing table
  • It ‘declared the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant’
  • Motion was drafted just three days after McCarthy announced an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden

A resolution from Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz seeking to vacate Kevin McCarthy‘s House Speakership seat was discovered in a Capitol Hill bathroom on Wednesday.

Journalist Matt Laslo wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the short motion was found on a baby changing table in a restroom beneath the House floor. He posted images of the single-sheet of paper folded in half next to a cup of coffee.

The motion was ‘declaring the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant,’ and included a draft date of September 15, 2023 at 11:22 a.m. – just three days after Speaker McCarthy announced the opening of the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Rep. Gaetz is part of the pro-Trump MAGA branch of the Republican Party and was part of the group of Freedom Caucus members opposing McCarthy’s bid for Speaker when Republicans took the House in the 2022 midterms.

He is one of the most vocal critics of McCarthy.

It is unclear how Gaetz’s resolution ended up in the bathroom, and who left it there.

McCarthy’s office did not respond to a request for comment on discovery of the resolution.

The same day McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry following months of pressure from the far-right arm of the GOP, Gaetz warned the Speaker launching the probe to appease the right wing will not save him from potential ousting.

‘I’ve fallen for this mirage before,’ Gaetz said Tuesday of the impeachment inquiry.

‘Obviously McCarthy wasn’t serious about Mayorkas impeachment,’ he said of the time the Speaker went down to the southern border to ‘gaslight’ about attempts to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

‘The first thing that happens is that Kevin McCarthy gets worried that he’s going to lose power, like he did in January, and like he has in the recent weeks as I’ve been mounting pressure on him,’ Gaetz noted. ‘And then the second thing he does [is] indicate that there is some upcoming impeachment or impeachment inquiry, and the reality is to date that has just been the slow boat to China. It hasn’t been authentic or sincere or robust.’

Some claim that there were threats to remove McCarthy if he didn’t launched impeachment.

But Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a fellow MAGA lawmaker, assured there were no threats against McCarthy.

The first impeachment proceedings are set for next Thursday in the House Oversight Committee, which is chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.).

By launching an inquiry, House investigators are given expanded abilities, including a heightened power to subpoena. The panel has already subpoenaed the bank records of President Biden’s son Hunter and brother James.

There is speculation that the inquiry could result in the subpoena of Joe and Hunter Biden’s testimony to Republican House investigators.

It has been two months since Mark Zuckerberg launched his so-called ‘Twitter-killer’ app Threads — which saw more than 100million users join in less than five days before plummeting in popularity.

But it now appears another rival app, Bluesky, could be the one to watch for X owner Elon Musk, after the platform amassed a record-breaking wave of signups in the wake of the billionaire’s threat to start charging users of his own social media site.

The figures, gathered by BlueskyStats, suggest that more than 53,500 users flocked to its app during the past 24 hours — roughly 40,000 above average.

However, the site’s total users – estimated to be around 1.1 million – still pale in comparison to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Musk revealed that his social media giant currently has around 550 million monthly users despite undergoing a series of drastic changes since his takeover last year, including the monetization of its blue tick verification system.

There was further controversy and uproar yesterday, when the tech billionaire revealed he was considering charging all users to access the platform in a bid to ward off bots, or automated accounts.

Jake Moore, a cybersecurity expert at ESET, told MailOnline that the increased popularity of Bluesky was both ‘inevitable’ and ‘predictable’.

‘Since it has arisen that users could be charged to use [X], the inevitable and rather predictable has happened with record sign ups to the Twitter/X alternative,’ he said.

‘The battle of the next Twitter has already commenced with a few in the ring such as Threads and Mastadon, too.

‘However, the real test of time will be to see which platform wins the majority sway of users to take on the next generation of social networkers.’

Bluesky, which launched on both Android and iOS earlier this year, is backed by Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO Jake Dorsey.

It is a rare example of an invite-only social media app, with pre-existing users able to hand out invite codes to anyone interested in joining.

A waiting list is also available to those who don’t know anyone on Bluesky, with generated codes sent by email.

Moore added: ‘Bluesky offers a sign up process to anyone with an invite code generated by those already on the platform.

‘This little feature cleverly keeps bots at bay as they struggle to automate mass signups which can cause security and misinformation issues.’

The invite-only component also sets Bluesky apart from X, as fake information and bots have been a major concern for Musk over the last few months.

Threat: New figures suggest that more than 53,500 users flocked to Bluesky yesterday alone

It was revealed yesterday in a conversation with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as the tech entrepreneur announced his plans for future charges.

‘I’d say the single most important reason we’re moving towards having a small monthly payment for use of the X system is that it’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,’ Musk said.

‘A bot costs a fraction of a penny, but if somebody has to pay a few dollars or something… you have to get a new payment method every time you have a new bot.

‘Prioritizing posts that are written by X premium subscribers, we’re actually going to come up with a lower tier pricing. We want it to be a small amount of money.

‘It’s a longer discussion, but in my view this is the only defense against vast armies of bots. As the AI gets really good it’s getting better at passing the captcha tests than humans.’

While Bluesky users can share images and follow accounts, they cannot send direct messages or post videos like X users.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg is looking to introduce direct messaging to Threads in the not-so-distant future.

Threads’ popularity also rocketed following its launch on July 6, amassing more than 100million users by day five.

But data from last month suggests this initial popularity has since waned somewhat, with analysts at Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) claiming that daily users fell to just 430,000 in the UK.

However, following Musk’s latest comments on charging X users, Mr Moore believes that Threads could make a big comeback.

‘Bots have been an issue on the platform since the beginning but when Musk laid off mass numbers of employees including security staff, the issue rose to rather uncontrollable lengths,’ he added.

‘Requesting payment from all users could potentially mitigate this problem but he could have a bigger problem in his hands with a mass exodus of users.

‘With many similar alternatives already set up such as Threads and Mastadon, this could be the final push for some users to crossover to the competition.’

MailOnline has approached X for comment.

X, formally known as Twitter, was hit with a worldwide outage – the second time the platform has crashed in 24 hours.

Issues appeared around 10am ET and plagued the website, app and server connection – but the glitch appeared to be fixed about one hour later.

Users reported posts were not loading properly – the same problem they experienced on Monday.

Tuesday’s outage came as Musk said he would start charging everyone to use X.

DownDetector, a site that monitors online outages, showed the outage was hitting major cities across the US, including Boston, New York City and Los Angeles.

Other countries like the UK and parts of Europe and Asia were also experienced problems.

DownDetector showed a majority of users were experiencing issues with the website, followed by the app and server connection.

What triggered the outage is unknown.

Users saw error messages that read: ‘Something went wrong, but don’t fret – it’s not your fault.’

Musk revealed Monday that ‘the only way to protect against bot accounts’ is to charge everyone who uses X – but ‘a small monthly payment.’

X currently charges $8 a month for its Blue Membership, which gives paying users the verification checkmark and access to premium features.

It is unclear how much Musk would charge for those without the blue tick and what benefits they would receive.

Musk revealed his plans to charge users during a live-streamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

‘I’d say the single most important reason we’re moving towards having a small monthly payment for the use of the X system is that it’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,’ Musk said.

‘It’s a longer discussion, but in my view, this is the only defense against vast armies of bots. As the AI gets really good it’s getting better at passing the captcha tests than humans.’

However, Musk’s news has sparked a movement among X users who are not threatening to delete their accounts if they are forced to pay.

‘The day Twitter becomes a pay only service is the day I move on,’ one person wrote on X.

Another added: ‘I am done with Twitter the minute Musky tries to charge me for spending a minute here. Find me on Threads. It’s free.’

‘If Musk starts to charge for twitter, I’m out of here,’ some else chimed in. ‘Start using Threads exclusively. Twitter will lose a few hundred million of users.’

Centrelink veteran Jez Heywood has demanded the government stop forcing the unemployed to look for a job while they receive welfare payments.

The president of the Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union hit the headlines earlier this year after he was embroiled in an on-air row with 2GB’s Ben Fordham when the radio host tried to find him a job.

But on Tuesday, Mr Heywood testified before the House of Representatives select committee into Workforce Australia Employment Services and used it to call for an end to Jobseeker’s ‘mutual obligations’.

Workforce Australia requires the unemployed to earn up to 100 points each month by applying for jobs, going on courses, turning up for job interviews and keeping appointments.

Anyone failing to hit their target can have their Jobseeker payments axed.

But Mr Heywood said being forced to try to find work was too stressful for the unemployed and it should be stopped immediately.

Centrelink veteran Jez Heywood (pictured) has demanded the government stop forcing the unemployed to look for a job while they receive welfare payments

He admitted having a ‘massive’ mental breakdown during his decade on the dole and was allowed to skip his mutual obligations for three months at a time on medical advice.

But Mr Heywood said that even that was too stressful to bear.

‘I had this massive breakdown, stayed in bed and cried for a week,’ he told committee chair and Labor MP Julian Hill.

‘I got mutual obligation exemption – medical certificates – but that was anxiety-inducing in itself…

‘Every three months I had to run the risk of some Centrelink person with no medical experience overruling a doctor’s medical certificate.’

Centrelink eventually stopped accepting his medical certificates, he said, after they said his condition was permanent and put him back to signing on every fortnight.

‘So now it’s a two week anxiety cycle of meeting my obligations under the looking for jobs and everything else and then having my fortnightly meetings with them,’ he said.

‘And you know, it’s just, like, unemployment’s, like, not-fun enough as it is. We don’t need all this other s*** on top of it.’

He said his best time on the dole was when the pandemic hit Australia in 2020 and mutual obligations were put on hold for six months and Jobseeker payments almost doubled.

He said the Covid package was a ‘breath of fresh air for everybody involved’.

‘The relief that people felt when they were living above the poverty line finally, and when they didn’t have the government breathing down their necks,’ he added.

‘It made such a difference to people’s mental health.’

He claimed his employment services provider enlisted him on a barista course in Geelong, south-west of Melbourne, 125km from his home near Frankston in Melbourne’s south-east.

‘That was the only site they offered a barista course,’ he told the hearing.

‘I went on the internet and found the barista courses nearby that weren’t through Matchworks [the associated provider]. They wouldn’t do it…just, no. Sorry.’

He said one of the few jobs he had been offered was working the phones for Centrelink.

‘I said, sure,’ he told the hearing. ‘If you don’t mind running the risk that I’ll become a whistleblower.

‘I never heard anything more back from that.’

His comments come after Mr Heywood joined the social media pile-on attacking Rich List business boss Tim Gurner for calling workers arrogant and saying the unemployment rate needed to rise by 40 to 50 per cent.

Heywood posted a photograph of Mr Gurner from a Daily Mail Australia article about the backlash over Mr Gurner’s comments, showing him beside a woman in front of an electric blue Porsche 911 Carrera valued at $320,000.

In a troubling call-out to his 3000-plus followers, Mr Heywood posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘Pretty distinctive blue Porsche you got there, Tim.

‘Can’t be many of them driving about Melbourne. Wonder how much a set of tyres are for it?’

But in a fail, Porsche doesn’t belong to Mr Gurner – and the woman beside him is not Mr Gurner’s wife, Amee Gurner.

The woman pictured is actually Gold Coast mum-of-three Rachael Reid, a former model and racecar driver, who was photographed meeting Mr Gurner for business.

The Porsche belongs to her and the picture features on her Instagram account, Her Supercar Life, which boasts more than 100,000 fans and has now spawned its own business.

A telltale sticker in the back window of the Porsche in the picture would have alerted Mr Heywood – but even after it was pointed out, he continued regardless.

When it was suggested the car might be a rental, he added: ‘Ah, damn. Still, there is always the insurance excess.’

But by then, it was too late and his followers were already plotting ways to vandalise the Porsche.

One follower suggesting it should be sprayed with paint-stripping brake fluid, while another said a bottle of coke would have the same effect on the pristine bodywork.

Others warned it could be keyed or scratched, or have all its tyres let down by using a lentil under the valve cap.

One ominously researched the cost of a new Porsche tyre and found it to be $967 a time, while another instructed would-be vandals to only damage three tyres because ‘if it’s all four, insurance will pay out’.

Other followers tagged in extremist environmental activist group Tyre Extinguishers who target 4×4 SUVs by deflating their tyres to protest against carbon pollution.

One follower though warned Heywood he had gone too far and advised: ‘I’d be deleting this post’, but his suggestion was ignored.

The Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union was founded in 2014 but isn’t a formal union.

It was registered as an Incorporated Association in 2015 and then as a not-for-profit charity in 2020.

Australian Council of Trade Unions Secretary Sally McManus has previously had to clarify the organisation is neither a registered union nor an affiliate of the ACTU.

Its website says it aims to ‘protect the rights and dignity of unemployed people and to alleviate poverty and disadvantage.’

It is funded almost entirely by scores of donations of under $1,000 from supporters, and was boosted by one single donation of $39,317 in 2020/21.

It has set up a free ‘national advocacy hotline’ which runs for four hours a day, five days a week, taking calls from desperate job seekers.

The AUWU says it aims to provide information resources for the unemployed and welfare recipients, while fighting for their rights.

It has also run surveys to canvass the opinions of the unemployed about life  on JobSeeker and campaigned for a rise in the dole.

More than 2,200 people crossed the river from Coahuila into Eagle Pass in a tactic pushed by drug lords to deliberately overwhelm U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

By tying up crucial resources, it leaves Mexico’s cartels free to carry out human trafficking and smuggling operations uninterrupted.

As midnight approached the group could be seen wading through the deep waters to reach the other side, much to the surprise of some local Mexican residents.

One could be heard on camera exclaiming how only a small portion of the group were crossing at that one moment – with hundreds more following behind.

By the time daylight arrived, the group were being rounded up by Border Patrol as they huddled under a bridge in Eagle Pass.

The footage was shot in Piedras Negras, the Mexican town which lies directly across the river from Eagle Pass.

The flagrant breaking of immigration rules took place next to the port of entry as those crossing the border thumbed their noses at the Biden Administration.

It was March 2021 when Biden pleaded with those thinking of making the journey to the U.S. ‘do not come’ with the threat of  ‘consequences’ for those crossing illegally.

‘I can say quite clearly: Don’t come. We’re in the process of getting set up, don’t leave your town or city or community,’ Biden said.

This latest wave of migrants who are mainly Venezeulan are believed to have travelled up through Panama.

Similar scenes have been witnessed along the border with towns and federal processing centers are now at overcapacity as a crush of crossings cripples the nation.

Last week there were more than 7,000 illegal crossings across the U.S.-Mexico border on several days.

Nearly 500 miles away from Eagle Pass in El Paso, a similar surge was experiences as 1,700 migrants crossed in a 24-hour period.

The migrants would then line up along the border wall and surrender to officers to then claim asylum in the US.

About 500 asylum-seekers mainly from Venezuela lined up at El Paso on Monday, reported KVIA.

Over the last week the region has seen a spike in encounters with 1,200 on average coming over each day. 4,200 migrants are being housed in local hotels rather than shelters.

Across the border as a whole, as many 9,400 migrants have crossed into the US in a single 24-hour period – almost equalling figures seen in May before the end of Title 42 which saw 10,000 people come into the country each day.

‘The way it’s being orchestrated through the cartels, I believe it’s meant to overwhelm the system. The [places] that are being impacted the most are border communities,’ former El Paso City Councilmember Claudia Rodriquez told The New York Post.

No street releases have been made in the El Paso region unlike in California and Arizona.

Last week, photos depicted at least three white unmarked Border Patrol buses filled with migrants parked in San Diego.

It led to several hundred people being released onto the streets. One migrant was even told by an agent: ‘You’re free to go on and do wherever you want. You’re free.’

He asked: ‘It’s no problem if I go to Chicago?’

‘You can do whatever you want,’ the official replied.

Border Patrol in San Diego has reportedly been dealing with 20,000 migrants in custody last week – 5,000 more than facilities can manage.

It can’t accommodate more than 15,000 migrants and migrants are being released onto the streets to fend for themselves after being processed at the border.

Similar migrant releases took place in Tucson, Arizona, with agents coming across 2,000 people a day and dealing with packed shelters.

In Texas, State Representative Eddie Morales says the migrants made the trek by hopping on trains.

‘It’s obviously a security issue, we have concerns over their safety and we need to address this in the most – expeditious manner,’ Morales said to News4SA.

‘Under U.S. immigration laws, most non-citizens coming to our border are not eligible to remain in the United States. Asylum laws do not provide for relief solely for economic reasons or for general violence,’ U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) tweeted on Monday.

After the public health order known as Title 42 was lifted in May 11, CBP says the U.S.  ‘returned to fully enforcing Title 8 immigration authorities to expeditiously process and remove individuals who arrive at the U.S. border unlawfully and do not have a legal basis to stay.’

Texas Congressman also Terry Gonzales also shared similar frustrations.

‘Eagle Pass is completely overrun right now. El Paso is getting overwhelmed right now. Arizona is getting overwhelmed right now.

‘The only way we can regain control of the southern border is by enforcing the laws that are on the books. That’s exactly what the administration needs to do. That’s exactly what Congress needs to focus on.

‘All Americans deserve to feel safe in their own communities and right now they do no. A lot of folks see it on TV and they think it will never happen to them. Well I’m here to tell you it’s already happening, whether you’re in New York, whether you’re in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles.

‘These folks that are coming over illegally, they’re coming to all parts of the country. It’s only going to get worse.’

One day earlier, a cargo train filled to the brim with migrants was spotted speeding toward the Mexican border with the United States.

Astounding footage of the FerroMex train was shot as the locomotive with hundreds in tow could be seen coming out of the Central Mexican city of Zacatecas as it made its way northbound on the 750-mile journey toward the U.S.

Container after container could be seen filled with migrants getting an easy ride as the goods train zoomed by.

There was whistling and cheering from those on board as the group hitched a ride. Some of the travelers could even be seen hanging out from the sides of the train.

The train was headed for the U.S. southern border – where in the southwest, roughly 2 million migrants have already made their way into America in 2023. Border towns have been crushed by the influx thanks to the lax border policies of the Biden administration.

The migrants looked to have prepared themselves for a long journey with many having erected tents and canvas over portions of the containers in a bid to shield themselves from the elements.

The videos comes as the latest figures from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol show a rise in the number of encounters with migrants at the Southern Border.

In July there were almost 184,000 migrant crossings into the U.S. – up from 144,000 encounters with border patrol from June.

Although the figures rose on a month-by-month basis, the numbers are still well below that of previous years when in 2021 and 2022 more than 200,000 crossed into the U.S. from Mexico.

The U.S. border has seen a flood of migrants from across the world, not just Central and South American nations such as Venezuela and Mexico. There have been migrants from China and other places entering via the porous southern border.

The video comes as recent data from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reveals an increase in encounters with migrants at the Southern Border between June and July of this year

The 2022 fiscal year saw record-breaking numbers of encounters with migrants at the Southwest border with 2,378,944 reported crossings from October to September.

In 2023, through July, there have been 1,973,092 – many of them coming as Title 42 expired.

The number of migrant crossings in August is set to exceed 230,000, according to Fox News.

Most migrant encounters are single adults, at 64.9 percent, but almost 600,000 are individuals in a family unit and there have been 109,298 unaccompanied minors crossing the border.

Issues of overcapacity are happening all across the southern border. Along with Tucson – street releases are happening in the San Diego sector and in Santa Cruz County, California.

Texas has also been using razor wire to block migrants illegally entering as it battles a challenge from the Biden administration seeking to stop it from building a buoy barrier in the Rio Grande.

The Lone Star State has also been busing migrants to ‘sanctuary cities’ such as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles in order to give border towns some relief.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott argues that Texas cities have carried the weight of illegal immigration and ‘sanctuary cities’ need to share that burden.

‘Texas has bused over 35,000 migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities,’ he wrote earlier this month on  Twitter.

‘Over 11,300 to D.C., over 13,300 to NYC, over 6,700 to Chicago, over 2,600 to Philadelphia, over 1,000 to Denver, over 480 to LA.’

Cochise County, Arizona, is being slammed with waves of migrants bussed from other counties after crossing the border amid President Joe Biden‘s lax policies.

‘The intellectual avoidance and abandonment with intended consequences’ by those leaders in Washington, DC, reference our southern border continues to be a slippery slope for those doing everything we can to protect our quality of life here in Cochise County!’ Sheriff Mark Dannels said.

‘The migrants being released are from outside Cochise County but were bussed to Cochise County, processed and then released,’ Daniels noted in a Facebook post.

‘I applaud the local [Customs and Border Protections] agents and their leadership for doing all they legally can during this on-going crisis.’

It’s unclear exactly how many migrants the processing facilities in Tucson can accommodate or how many have been transported to other locations such as Cochise County.

Leonardo DiCaprio throws his support behind vegan trainer brand loved by Hollywood A-listers and royalty – with pairs selling for an eye-popping £200

Climate activist Leonardo DiCaprio has invested his cash in vegan footwear brand LØCI MailOnline has learned.

The British label is popular amongst his fellow A-listers as well as royalty, including Ben Affleck, Eva LongoriaMeghan Markle and Princess Eugenie.

Leo first threw his support behind the company in October last year saying at the time:  ‘I am proud to be an investor in LØCI, a brand dedicated to minimising its environmental impact, and centred around creating cruelty-free, ethical footwear.’

LØCI’s sneakers come in numerous colours and designs, but are not cheap and cost on average of £200 a pair.

The brand boasts about ‘ethical fashion without sacrificing on style’ and uses ‘premium repurposed ocean and land plastic’, which was no doubt a draw for climate activist Leo.

100% vegan, cruelty-free, and unisex, LØCI sneakers are handmade in Porto, Portugal using recycled ocean plastics, as well as renewable and biodegradable materials where possible to help deliver a stylish eco-conscious sneaker.

Production is scaled up or down in response to demand to manage environmental impact. 10% of online profits on every pair purchased are donated to conservation charities focused on protecting wildlife.

James Blunt‘s aristocrat wife Sofia has also designed a range for the label which benefited the Blue Marine Foundation.

Earlier this year Titanic star Leo risked accusations of eco-hypocrisy as he was seen leaving Porto Cervo, Sardinia via a private airport.

The actor who is a noted climate activist, boarded a plane at Olbia Private Airport which has its own private jet terminal for wealthy travellers.

It comes as he has travelled between the US and cities such as London, Milan, and Paris over recent months – accumulating over 12,000 miles of travel.

Leo has previously come under fire for his use of gas-guzzling private jets.

In 2016, he was ridiculed for an 8,000 mile trip via private jet from Europe to New York City to accept an award for his environmental activism.

Carbon emissions for private jets vary, but by some accounts are more than 37 times higher than flying commercial.

It comes after the actor has been at the centre of a controversy – following his public kiss with Italian model Vittoria Ceretti, 25, in Ibiza earlier this month.

And The Hollywood star has received some backlash on Twitter for dating yet another younger model.

The Revenant sensation was seen in a passionate clinch with his new flame Vittoria during a recent visit to Hi Ibiza nightclub on the Spanish party island.

He has a reputation for only dating women 25 or under and famously tends to break up with them after they pass the milestone – as he did with his last serious girlfriend  Camila Morrone, now 26.

After the pictures emerged with Vittoria, many were quick to ridicule him for the fact it wouldn’t be a long relationship as she will turn 26 next June.

One wrote: ‘She gonna be gone before this tweet is done,’ while another joked: ‘One more year and he won’t look at her again.’

Leonardo and Vittoria, who have a 23 year age gap, were spotted gazing lovingly into each others eyes before they locked lips while partying at the venue until 4:30am.
