A Polish museum has claimed to have found the oldest time capsule in the world in a church spire, containing 300-year-old coins, Latin documents and a deformed lead bullet.

The box allegedly dates back to 1726 and was discovered during renovation work at the Church of St. Stanislaus in the small town of Wschowa, in western Poland.

The age of the capsule has yet to be confirmed, but if it actually is from 1726, it would make the find older than the current record holder from US city Boston.

The town’s museum called it a ‘unique find’ and said on social media: ‘The oldest time capsule in the world found in Wschowa.

‘The oldest capsule takes the form of a box made of copper sheet, with the date 1726 stamped on its lid.

‘The time capsule consisting of four packages from 1726, 1786, 1884 and 1914 was extracted from the sphere at the top of the tower of the parish church.’

The current oldest known time capsule, whose age has been verified, was discovered in Boston at the Massachusetts State House in 2014, hidden behind a painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware River.

Inside one of the newly discovered caskets, museum conservators found a parchment written in Latin which when translated chronicled a devastating fire that engulfed the town and reduced the church to ashes.

They also found a lead bullet that had been shot into the casket and damaged some of the documents.

Inside a smaller casket they found coins from the 18th and 19th centuries wrapped in newspapers.

The museum said: ‘Above the lock and on the bottom there is a date stamped three times from the second opening in 1884.

‘The bottom was shot through with a small caliber lead bullet found inside the box.

‘The smaller casket contained coins wrapped in newspapers in two separate packages.’

Museum experts say they will now translate all the documents and thoroughly examine the contents of the latest find.

During the 18th century, the town of Wschowa served as the second, ‘unofficial capital of Poland’.

In 1793, as a result of the second partition of Poland, the town became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. It returned to Polish hands after WWII.

Meanwhile, the previously oldest time capsule in Europe was also discovered in Poland in 2020 and dates back to 1797.

It was found in a church spire in the town of Ziębice, 115 miles south of the most recent discovery.

Opening it up, town officials found 200-year-old old coins and documents dated 1797 written in German.

In the 18th century the town was called Münsterberg and was part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

The town’s mayor Mariusz Szpilarewicz said: ‘All indications are that it may be one of the oldest time capsules found in the world.

The oldest capsule in the world was discovered at the Massachusetts State House in Boston in 2014 after crews removed the time capsule from the granite cornerstone of the building.

Inside was an engraved silver plate proclaiming that the capsule was hidden in 1795 by Revolutionary War luminaries Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, along with a host of other items.

Originally made of cowhide, the time capsule was believed to have been embedded in the cornerstone when construction on the state Capitol began in 1795. Adams was governor of Massachusetts at the time.

The time capsule was removed in the mid-19th century and its contents transferred to a copper box, Galvin said.

Its removal was due to an ongoing water filtration project at the building.

Jeremy Kyle has revealed he’s set to become a father for the sixth time as his wife Victoria is pregnant with their second child.

The broadcaster, 58, shared the news that he’s set to welcome a daughter in the coming months, after he and Victoria, 39, welcomed their son Oliver, in 2020.

Speaking to The Sun, Jeremy said he and Victoria, who he married in 2021, are ‘over the moon’ to be welcoming another child early next year, adding his family will be ‘complete.’

It comes as Jeremy prepares to join forces with former Coronation Street star Nicola Thorpe to front a brand new TalkTV breakfast show, starting next month.

He said: ‘Vic says I need to set up a side business by bottling it because I’m 58 and I’ve only got one testicle, but everyone knows that anyway.

‘The other kids are really happy, although my eldest Harriet thinks I need sectioning.

‘I personally think it’s my late parents having a laugh from up above, to be honest.’

Jeremy, who is also a grandfather, previously overcame a battle with testicular cancer in 2012, and has since strongly advocated for men’s health issues.

As well as son Oliver, Jeremy is father to daughters Harriet, 32, Alice, 18, Ava, 17, and son Henry, 13, who he shares with ex-wife Carla Germaine.

Back in October, Jeremy said he would miss Vicky and Oliver as he threw himself into work for his new live show on TalkTV.

The TV star made his television comeback with a brand new live show on TalkTV – three years after his daytime programme was axed following the death of guest Steve Dymond.

When asked what he would miss about returning to work, he said of his loved ones: ‘Not being there at bathtime! No, I’m kidding. I would love to be there every night. Oliver and Victoria have changed my life.

‘Oliver’s two and a half and completely rules the roost, to be perfectly honest. He’s changed me completely. He shouts, “Daddy!” when he sees me on screen now.

‘My kids, my grandkids, my family, my wife saved me. Harriet is an amazing mum with two toddlers. Alice is about to go to university; Henry is about to go to boarding school; Ava has just got eight GCSEs. It’s amazing, she’s severely dyslexic. It’s incredible what she’s done, amazing. I’m so proud.

‘But I’ve always wanted to go back to live television. It’s the best of what I’ve always loved doing.’

The presenter’s eponymous Jeremy Kyle Show was suspended indefinitely in May 2019 following the death of Steve Dymond, one week after a programme featuring him was filmed.

He returned to television screens in April for the first time in three years, as he helped launch new channel TalkTV along with Sharon Osbourne.

Dymond is suspected to have died from suicide seven days after filming for the Jeremy Kyle Show.

He had taken a lie detector test after being accused of cheating on his ex-fiancee Jane Callaghan, of Gosport, Hampshire.

The confrontational talk show, which was hugely popular and had been a regular fixture since 2005 in the daytime TV schedule, was axed for good following calls for it to be cancelled from MPs and members of the public.

After the show was pulled, MPs launched an inquiry into reality TV – and ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said the broadcaster had been ‘looking at’ cancelling it prior to it being removed from the schedules.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have finally been seen together

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was escorted out of the locker room by the famed pop star following Sunday’s 41-10 blowout win over the Chicago Bears.

Kelce was wearing his eye-popping blue-and-white denim leisure suit, while Swift sported her red-and-white ensemble that she was wearing alongside his mother, Donna, in a luxury suite at Arrowhead Stadium.

Earlier, Swift appeared to yell ‘let’s f***ing go‘ in response to Kelce’s third-quarter touchdown reception.

Kelce would end up leading the Chiefs in receiving with seven catches for 69 yards and the TD grab.

The eight-time Pro Bowler was likely determined to put on the best show he could after revealing to ESPN’s Pat McAfee that he invited Swift to this week’s game.

‘I told her that I’ve seen her rock a stage in Arrowhead and she might have to come see me rock the stage at Arrowhead.,’ Kelce said. ‘We’ll see what happens in the near future.’

Kelce had previously shared on his ‘New Heights’ podcast — which he hosts with his brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce — that he was upset that his opportunity to present Swift with a friendship bracelet — along with his phone number — went by the boards during her Kansas City stop of the Eras Tour.

Following the game Kelce recorded a video commending his head coach Andy Reid for moving past legendary former Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry for sole possession of fourth place on the all-time wins list.

‘Get fired up man, we gotta get coach Reid to No. 1,’ Kelce said in a video post to the NFL’s X account.

‘He just got to four, we gotta get him to No. 1. But in the meantime we gonna keep getting these dubs baby. Chiefs Kingdom get loud baby.’

Reid was not the only member of the Chiefs to etch his name into the NFL’s history books in front of the 12-time Grammy award winning Swift either. Mahomes went over 25,000 yards passing for his career. He did it in 83 games, the fastest in NFL history.

Mahomes also recorded his 22nd game with three TD passes and no interceptions, tying Aaron Rodgers for the most by a QB before turning 30. The Chiefs signal caller turned 28 last Sunday.

Kelce himself also inched closer to record-breaking status as he only needs three more TD catches to pass Tony Gonzalez (76) for second in Chiefs history.

There is no word on whether or not his new No. 1 fan will be in attendance when he eventually breaks the Chiefs record.

Mahomes was also asked about Swift being in attendance by FOX reporter Ein Andrews after the game concluded.

‘Do you realize how much pressure was on you from the Swifties to get Travis Kelce a touchdown with Taylor in the house today?’ she asked during the quick interview.

‘I heard she was in the house… I felt a little bit of pressure and so I knew I had to get it to Trav,’ Mahomes said.

‘And of course, it was on a route he does his own thing and just makes up a route and I threw it to him.  I think he wanted to get in the end zone as much as all the Swifites wanted him to.’

Some prefer not to dwell on the exact moment we will depart this Earth, others are morbidly curious.

But science has unearthed several distinct patterns around when people tend to die.

Just as you have a ‘body clock’ which helps to dictate when you wake and sleep, it also influences the time of day when you die – with a distinct ‘spike’ in the morning.

Other studies have shown that certain days of the week are far deadlier – and one day of the year in particular sees more deaths than any other.

Some of this is due to factors such as drug overdoses and firearms – but other ‘spikes’ are more difficult to explain.

What time of day are you most likely to die?

Your body clock doesn’t just make you feel hungry and sleepy – it also influences when you die, according to science.

The time people are most likely to die is 11am, according to Harvard Medical School research published in 2012.

Professor Clifford Saper, the lead author of the paper, said: ‘Virtually all physiological processes have a circadian rhythm, meaning that they occur predominantly at certain parts of the day.

‘There’s even a circadian rhythm of death, so that in the general population people tend on average to be most likely to die in the morning hours. Sometime around 11am is the average time.’

But the picture is actually slightly more complex than that.

Saper’s research, which involved 1,200 healthy people aged 65, found that people with a certain genotype (the genetic variants a person carries) have different sleeping patterns – and a different average time of death.

People with the G-G genotype (guanine-guanine) tend to sleep around an hour later, generally speaking, and die at around 6pm instead of the 11am most people die at.

Saper said: ‘There is really a gene that predicts the time of day that you’ll die. Not the date, fortunately, but the time of day,’

What day of the year are you most likely to die?

One day of the year has more deaths than any other (Shutterstock)

More people die in the cold winter months than any other time of year, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

January and December tend to be the deadliest months of the year – but analysis by Professor David Philips of 57 million death certificates between 1979 and 2004 pinpointed one day as the deadliest.

Philips found that New Year’s Day is the deadliest of the year – and the reason isn’t due to celebrations, alcohol or traffic accidents.

Philips said: ‘This pattern turns up in every natural cause of death, but not for external causes like auto accidents. It’s hard to understand why that would be.’

More recent research highlighted Christmas Day as the deadliest day of the year (when it comes to heart attacks at least), with a significant spike between Christmas and New Year.

Dr Donald Lloyd-Jones, volunteer president of the American Heart Association, said, ‘The holidays are a busy, often stressful, time for most of us. Routines are disrupted; we may tend to eat and drink more and exercise and relax less.

‘We also may not be listening to our bodies or paying attention to warning signs, thinking it can wait until after the new year. All of these can be contributors to increasing the risk for heart attack at this time of the year.’

What day of the week are you most likely to die?

Analysis of 39 million deaths between 1999 and 2004 found that there is one day of the week where you are most likely to die – Saturday.

Researchers at LiveScience analysed CDC data for all deaths and found a small but significant rise in deaths on Saturdays.

Some of the reasons behind this are fairly simple: deaths from drug overdoses, car accidents and firearms all peak on Saturdays.

More recent research in 2018 found that you are still more likely to die when admitted to a hospital at the weekend.

The research, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that, among patients with cardiac arrest, 25.2 percent survived on week days, while 21.9 percent survived on weekends and week nights.

Kirsty Gallacher breaks her silence as she posts on social media for the first time since brother-in-law Russell Brand was accused of rape, sexual assault and predatory behaviour

Kirsty Gallacher returned to social media on Wednesday to share her first post since brother-in-law Russell Brand was accused of rape, sexual assault and predatory behaviour.

The presenter, 47, has maintained a stoic silence following a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches into the comedian’s conduct around women at the height of his mainstream TV fame.

But she returned to Instagram on Wednesday with a 46th birthday message for Sky Sports colleague and close friend Natalie Pinkham

Sharing a photo of the pair at the Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Awards, an event they co-hosted in 2018, she wrote: ‘Happy birthday to this special woman, how lucky I am to have you in my life.’

Pinkham later reposted the tribute on her own Instagram account, adding: ‘Love you too KG.’

Gallacher’s return to social media comes after a week long absence as Brand, who is married to the presenter’s younger sister Laura, battles to save his career following an in depth exposé into his actions while working in mainstream TV and radio.

On September 16, shortly before the Dispatchers report aired on Channel 4, she appeared to support her brother-in-law after he took to social media to ‘absolutely deny’ a string of ‘very serious criminal allegations made against him’.

The Smooth Radio presenter shared the comedian’s two-minute YouTube video, accompanying it with a large red love heart in an Instagram story that she has since deleted.

Brand has since been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by four women during the peak of his fame, according to a joint investigation by The Sunday Times and Channel 4.

The allegations claim to have taken place between 2006 and 2013. One of the alleged victims is alleged to be a 16-year-old schoolgirl.

X, formally known as Twitter, was hit with a worldwide outage – the second time the platform has crashed in 24 hours.

Issues appeared around 10am ET and plagued the website, app and server connection – but the glitch appeared to be fixed about one hour later.

Users reported posts were not loading properly – the same problem they experienced on Monday.

Tuesday’s outage came as Musk said he would start charging everyone to use X.

DownDetector, a site that monitors online outages, showed the outage was hitting major cities across the US, including Boston, New York City and Los Angeles.

Other countries like the UK and parts of Europe and Asia were also experienced problems.

DownDetector showed a majority of users were experiencing issues with the website, followed by the app and server connection.

What triggered the outage is unknown.

Users saw error messages that read: ‘Something went wrong, but don’t fret – it’s not your fault.’

Musk revealed Monday that ‘the only way to protect against bot accounts’ is to charge everyone who uses X – but ‘a small monthly payment.’

X currently charges $8 a month for its Blue Membership, which gives paying users the verification checkmark and access to premium features.

It is unclear how much Musk would charge for those without the blue tick and what benefits they would receive.

Musk revealed his plans to charge users during a live-streamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

‘I’d say the single most important reason we’re moving towards having a small monthly payment for the use of the X system is that it’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,’ Musk said.

‘A bot costs a fraction of a penny, but if somebody has to pay a few dollars or something… you have to get a new payment method every time you have a new bot.

‘Prioritizing posts that are written by X premium subscribers, we’re actually going to come up with a lower tier pricing.

‘We want it to be a small amount of money.

‘It’s a longer discussion, but in my view, this is the only defense against vast armies of bots. As the AI gets really good it’s getting better at passing the captcha tests than humans.’

However, Musk’s news has sparked a movement among X users who are not threatening to delete their accounts if they are forced to pay.

‘The day Twitter becomes a pay only service is the day I move on,’ one person wrote on X.

Another added: ‘I am done with Twitter the minute Musky tries to charge me for spending a minute here. Find me on Threads. It’s free.’

‘If Musk starts to charge for twitter, I’m out of here,’ some else chimed in. ‘Start using Threads exclusively. Twitter will lose a few hundred million of users.’

For the first time in eight decades, explorers have pictured a Japanese aircraft carrier sunk during World War II‘s Battle of Midway.

Japan‘s aircraft carrier Akagi was pictured for the first time since it disappeared under the water in 1942 during the battle that helped during the Pacific campaign in America’s favor.

‘This expedition is not only rewriting history and our understanding of these special places, but also pushing the limits of what we thought was possible in terms of interdisciplinary collaboration,’ said Daniel Wagner, chief scientist for Ocean Exploration Trust.

The trust led the exploration efforts from September 8 to September 12 to photograph the Akagi along with other vessels sunken during the pivotal battle that saw 3,000 Japanese fighters perish.

The group also surveyed in detail the USS Yorktown, which was the lone US carrier sunk during Midway and not found until 25 years ago.

The Battle of Midway began on June 4, 1942, and lasted until the 7th. The naval campaign has gone down in US lore for its ability to flip the momentum in America’s favor.

Four Japanese aircraft carriers -including the Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu – were sunk along with a heavy cruiser. The Americans lost the carrier Yorktown and the destroyer Hammmann.

The loss of the four carriers by Japan proved difficult to overcome. The Imperial Empire also lost well-trained pilots in the battle. Meanwhile, America’s industrial capabilities grew allowing it to replace the losses.

In total, Japan lost more than 3,000 men during the fight. The US lost only 362,

The sunken ships were lost to the sea for years, until deep-sea explorers helped find some of the ships.

The Akagi was found in 2019, but this month’s exploration marked the first complete survey of the vessel.

Japanese aircraft carriers – the Soryu and Hiryu – and the cruiser Mikuma are still unaccounted for.

For the most recent exploration, remote-controlled vehicles were utilized to capture images of the shipwrecks with  the mission involving more than 100 experts from various countries who ‘helped guide the mission and providing valuable real-time interpretations throughout the surveys.’

The expedition team also conducted ‘non-invasive visual surveys’ of the wrecks during three deployments at depths exceeding 16,700 feet – the deepest remotely operated vehicle dive ever completed by the Exploration Vessel Nautilus.

‘On this occasion, we meet on those same Pacific waters in which Japan and the U.S. once met in battle, but this time as allies and fellow researchers,’ said Kosei Nomura, Minister, Head of Economic Section, Embassy of Japan.

‘We are reminded that today’s peace and tomorrow’s discoveries are built on the sacrifices of war, and so in my view, it is meaningful that Japan and the U.S. are now deepening their cooperation at Midway, utilizing such cutting-edge technology.’

‘During over 43 hours at depth, we methodically circumnavigated these historic wrecks, bringing to light many features in great detail, including their armament, battle, and sinking-related damage,’ said Daniel Wagner, the chief scientist for the Ocean Exploration Trust.

The wrecks were meticulously examined and included looking for damage related to battles they fought and their subsequent and sinking.

‘Many anti-aircraft guns were still pointing up, providing clues about the final moments on these iconic ships,’ Wagner explained.

Each dive ended with poignant ceremonies paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the Battle of Midway.

Frank Thompson, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington, D.C., who is onboard the Petrel said: ‘We read about the battles, we know what happened. But when you see these wrecks on the bottom of the ocean and everything, you kind of get a feel for what the real price is for war.

‘You see the damage these things took, and it’s humbling to watch some of the video of these vessels because they’re war graves.’

Retired Navy Capt. Jack Crawford, who died in April 2022 at the age of 103, was among the Yorktown’s 2,270 survivors.

Japanese dive bombers left the Yorktown badly damaged, with black smoke gushing from its stacks, but the vessel was still upright. Then the torpedoes hit, Crawford recounted in an interview about the battle.

‘Bam! Bam! We get two torpedoes, and I know we’re in trouble. As soon as the deck edge began to go under, I knew . she wasn’t going to last,’ said Crawford, whose later military career was with the naval nuclear propulsion program.

The Yorktown sank slowly, and a destroyer was able to pick up Crawford and many others.

‘An important part of our mission here at the Naval History and Heritage Command is to locate, interpret, and protect lost U.S. Navy ships and aircraft, particularly those that represent the last resting place of American sailors,’ said Samuel Cox, Director of the Naval History and Heritage Command, and one of the explorers to photograph the Yorktown during the recent mission.

The entire exploration of the Midway ships was streamed live in real-time, giving the public its first chance to see the vessels along with researchers.

The surveys were non-invasive at about 16,600 feet below the surface.

It is illegal to otherwise disturb the underwater US military gravesites, and their exact coordinates are kept secret. The battle was found about 1,000 miles from Hawaii at about the halfway point between Japan and the US.

The exploration effort involved more than 100 experts from US, Japan and across the globe.

The goal of the exploration was to help document and assess the important site for both America and Japan.

During the battle, American forces broke Japan’s naval code and prepare for a counter attack. That allowed the US the upper hand in what became a turning point in the war.

What was The Battle Of Midway?

The 1942 battle occurred six months after the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor after Navy code breakers broke complex Japanese code to reveal a plan to ambush U.S. forces.

The Japanese planned to occupy Midway, a strategic U.S.-held atoll 1,300 miles northwest of Pearl Harbor, and destroy what was left of the Pacific fleet.

When Japanese planes began bombing Midway, American torpedo planes and bombers counter-attacked in waves, bombing and sinking four Japanese carriers on June 4.

The fighting continued for another three days before the United States proved to be victorious.

Anthony J. Principi, who served as secretary of veterans affairs from 2001 to 2005, wrote in the Military Times in 2017 on the 75th anniversary of the battle that the Navy commanders made ‘coordinated, split-second, life-and-death decisions.’

‘We won because luck was on our side, because the Japanese made mistakes and because our officers and men acted with great courage amidst the chaos of battle,’ he wrote.

Three people in Britain have been infected with a dog disease which is now spreading between canines in the UK for the first time.

Brucella canis, a bacterial infection, is an incurable disease in canines can lead to infertility, lameness and pain in dogs.

But the UK Health Security agency has now confirmed that three Brits have also caught the disease from infected animals, the first such cases ever found in the UK.

And in another first Government experts today revealed they have now spotted the disease spreading among animals in the UK, albeit at low levels.

Cases found previously had been isolated incidents among animals imported from areas like Eastern Europe, where the disease is endemic.

Three of the human cases of Brucella canis have now been spotted in the UK since 2022 health chiefs said.

Cases among dogs in the UK have also skyrocketed, with a record 91 already spotted this year.

Brucella canis is a dog disease found mainly in animals imported from Eastern Europe, it can also infect people (stock image)

Dr Christine Middlemiss, chief veterinary officer at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), told The Telegraph: ‘We have had spread of a case in the UK to another dog in the UK. It is through breeding in kennels.

‘There is not a lot – there is very little. But that is new for us.’

These UK-native cases of Brucella canis came from British dogs that had either had contact with an imported dog or were the offspring of an imported dog.

This means the disease isn’t considered endemic in the UK and is still officially classified as low risk.

Human Animal Infections and Risk Surveillance (HAIRS), a cross-Government group, today published a report on the risk Brucella canis poses.

HAIRS found that there is a ‘very low’ risk of someone in the population becoming infected.

However, dog breeders, people who work at vets or kennels and owners of infected dogs, are slightly more at risk of being exposed — but this is still classed as ‘low’, the HAIRS report states.

The group also found while the health risks of a Brucella canis infection were generally low, severe cases with life threatening complications had been reported and immunocompromised individuals could be at greater risk.

In total three cases in people in the UK have been confirmed, with the HAIRS report detailing two.

The first was detected after attending hospital for their symptoms, while the second was found in an asymptomatic person working at a vets who was routinely tested after contact with an infected dog.

HAIRS recommended that dog breeders and charities importing dogs from overseas should carry out pre-export testing for the disease.

They also advised that vets treating dogs imported from overseas use appropriate PPE to help minimise the risk of a potential infection.

Dr Middlemiss said the Government was currently considering introducing a mandatory testing requirement for dogs imported from Brucella canis hotspots.

‘We are gathering the evidence, various risk assessments are contributing to that evidence and we will consider it,’ she said.

While Brucella canis infection is not a death sentence for animals, it is considered a life-long disease, with no cure.

This is because the bacteria behind the disease can remain dormant in the dog even after treatment, meaning they remain potentially infectious.

Therefore, the only way to guarantee onward transmission of the disease is euthanasia.

HAIRS said the decision on euthanasia is a matter for the owner of the animal and their vet and a willingness to accept the risks posed by continual exposure to the animal.

Brucella canis infections among dogs in the UK has been on the rise.

There were just 9 cases in 2020, but this rose to 36 the following year and increased to 55 in 2022.

As of July this year 91 cases have been identified in the UK, according to HAIRS.

Clinical information was available for 22 of the cases, with 19 dogs having no symptoms, one having inflammation of the spine and other two having back pain.

What is Brucella canis?

Brucella canis is a bacterial infection that can infect both dogs and people.

In dogs it can lead to infertility, lameness and pain.

There is no cure though and recommended treatment is either euthanasia or extended use of antibiotics, though a dog can still be infectious even while taking medication.

The disease spreads in dogs via exposure to contaminated bodily fluids.

People can get the disease by via exposure to the same contaminated bodily fluids with people who work with multiple animals, like vets and kennel staff, most at risk.

In people, Brucella canis generally produces mild and general flu-like symptoms that can make it difficult to diagnose.

It rarely causes serious disease but human cases of dangerous infections in the heart, bone, brain tissue and blood have been recorded.

However, there have been no reported fatalities in medical literature.

In people the disease is often treated with antibiotics and while theoretically possible, there is no known cases of human-to-human transmission.

The disease is not endemic to Britain with cases in the UK mostly coming from animals imported from elsewhere, particularly Eastern Europe.

All but one of these dogs had been imported into the UK, with most coming from Romania (14).

The remaining case came from a puppy at an unlicensed breeding premises in Wales, where 21 dogs were also subsequently found to have the infection.

All other cases found so far this year were in imported dogs.

HAIRS said a rise in awareness of the disease among British vets, and therefore testing for it, is likely behind the increase in cases.

Tests have also increased with 5,773 carried out between January and July this year, compared to just 1,332 in 2018.

Romania is one of the biggest sources of imported dogs into the UK, with over 70,000 animals imported to Britain in 2020 and 2021.

Only 10,000 animals were imported from last year Romania due to concerns of rise in diseases resulting from the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine.

Signs of Brucella canis in dogs include infertility, swollen testes in male dogs, lethargy, premature aging and lameness from back pain.

However, some dogs may show no obvious signs of infection.

In people, Brucella canis generally produces mild and general flu-like symptoms that can make it difficult to diagnose.

The disease can also strike years after initial infection and may occasionally come back recurrently over several years.

There have also been reports of dangerous complications resulting from a Brucella canis infection in people.

These include serious infections of the heart, bone, brain tissue and blood. However, no fatal case of Brucella canis in people has been recorded.

Transmission of the disease between people is theoretically possible through routes like blood transfusion but there are no known cases of this occurring in medical literature.

Dr Middlemiss told MailOnline that: ‘We continue to work closely with our colleagues at UKHSA, dog welfare groups and vets to minimise the risks posed and recommend prospective owners make sure any dog imported from regions where Brucella canis is present is tested before arrival.’

Wendi Shepherd, head of emerging Infections and zoonoses at UKHSA, added: ‘We have seen a small number of cases of Brucella canis in people in the UK this year.

‘However, the risk to the general public in the UK is very low and the risk to people who have had close contact with an infected dog is low.

‘From the small number of cases of the infection that have been reported in humans worldwide, the infection is usually mild, but people who have weakened immune systems, are pregnant, or are young children may be more likely to experience more serious infection.’

Bernard Looney was living on borrowed time at BP

Bernard Looney’s future as boss of BP was already under threat before bombshell revelations about his private life forced him to quit, The Mail on Sunday understands.

The 53-year-old stepped down abruptly last week after it emerged he misled the oil giant’s board over an earlier probe into his personal relationships with colleagues.

BP’s directors, led by chairman Helge Lund, have been accused of turning a blind eye to Looney’s ‘toxic’ behaviour after last year’s investigation cleared him of breaking BP’s code of conduct.

BP lifer: Bernard Looney took charge less than four years ago

BP lifer: Bernard Looney took charge less than four years ago

But it has now emerged that the Irish businessman, who had given assurances about his behaviour, was living on borrowed time.

Two directors privately discussed replacing Looney on the fringes of a board meeting before the summer – months before the latest misconduct allegations that led to his downfall surfaced. The talks were prompted by questions around BP’s pursuit of a green energy strategy pioneered by Looney, rather than his personal behaviour.

Succession planning was not on the agenda at the board meeting and the discussions were informal, sources added.

However, when BP said last week that it had recently received ‘allegations of a similar nature’, Looney was forced to admit that he had not been ‘fully transparent’ with the board, prompting him to quit immediately.

BP has been rocked by the scandal. Finance boss Murray Auchincloss, who is himself in a long-term relationship with a colleague, has been appointed as BP’s interim chief executive until a permanent replacement is found.

Lund has ruled himself out as Looney’s successor. Looney was a BP lifer who took charge less than four years ago with a vow to reinvent the 114-year-old company. He laid out ambitious plans for it to achieve zero net emissions by 2050, and to invest billions in renewable projects such as solar and wind power.

This set BP apart from its rivals but irked many in the oil and gas industry and raised questions about BP’s prospects.

‘Looney made enemies,’ according to a leading investor, who declined to be named.

There are said to be growing divisions within BP about whether it should invest more in fossil fuels, though Lund has pledged to continue with its energy transition plan.

Another investigation is under way as BP faces calls to strip Looney of the £8million bonus he took home last year.

Soaring oil prices after Russia invaded Ukraine helped BP rake in record profits last year of £23billion.

He is the third boss to be ousted before his time. Lord Browne, who attempted to rebrand BP as ‘Beyond Petroleum’ in the early 2000s, left after The Mail on Sunday revealed he lied to a court about his relationship with another man.

His replacement Tony Hayward left after comments he made about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He said he wanted his ‘life back’ after spending months dealing with the fallout of the disaster, which killed 11.

After a long absence from WWE, superstar Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson made his much awaited return to the ring on an episode of SmackDown in Denver, Colorado.

Just hours after he appeared on the Pat McAfee Show – live on the campus of the University of Colorado – The Rock showed up at the wrestling promotion where he made his name.

McAfee, who is a commentator with WWE, was in the ring with 2022 United States Champion Austin Theory when The Rock made his sudden entrance.

Johnson has been absent from the ring since October of 2019 – when he appeared on the SmackDown 20th anniversary show.

The Rock was met with massive cheers from the crowd at Ball Arena – who were then treated to a small display of his wrestling capabilities.

With a brief skirmish between The Rock and Theory, Johnson was able to bring out two of his more famous finishing moves: a spine-buster and the infamous ‘People’s Elbow’.

Then, Johnson pointed to McAfee – who had remained in the ring – and instructed him to deliver his own version of the ‘elbow’, still billed as ‘The Most Electrifying Move in All of Sports Entertainment’.

Later on in the show, The Rock stood face-to-face with one of his old WWE ‘rivals’ John Cena – who was set to appear later in the show.

The pair stared each other down before cracking smiles – with Cena saying ‘Welcome home’.

It’s the first time that Johnson wrestled in any capacity since that October 2019 appearance, which came around the time that he announced his retirement from pro wrestling.

It isn’t clear if ‘Rocky’ will be making a return to the WWE or if this was a one-off appearance because he was already in the Centennial State.

But Johnson’s time in Colorado is not done just yet. He’ll be making an appearance on College GameDay live from the University of Colorado campus in Boulder – just half an hour north of Denver.

The Rock will be appearing on the show as a celebrity ‘guest picker’ to take a crack at selecting the winners of Saturday’s slate of American college football games.
