Rainy weather has made its way up the East Coast Sunday, bringing flooding and killing power in New Jersey after Tropical Storm Ophelia battered North Carolina.

In the Tri-State area, people will face the brunt of lingering, miserable weather for much of Sunday as the post-tropical storm moves past. There is still a risk of coastal flooding and heavy, persistent rain – from DC to NYC on Sunday.

Yesterday, the National Hurricane Center reported just after 6:20am, the storm had made landfall near Emerald Isle, North Carolina. The storm had maximum winds reaching 70mph, with sustained winds of 61mph.

A tropical storm warning was issued from Cape Fear, North Carolina, to Fenwick Island, Delaware. A hurricane watch was also in effect in North Carolina for the area north of Surf City to Ocracoke Inlet.

In New Jersey today, winds and the deluge have been causing disruption, and waves near the shore have been recorded as reaching up to 10 feet high.

At the Cleveland Park Metro Station in Washington, DC, officials are anticipating flooding and have sandbagged the vicinity, as well as other flood-prone stations.

New York City locals woke up to torrential rain and strong winds Sunday, with drizzly weather expected to continue into the beginning of the new week as the city reels from the final effects of Ophelia.

Global Citizen Festival, held in Central Park, continued on despite the wet weather on Saturday evening – as festivalgoers in the Big Apple braved the torrent to watch big names like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lauryn Hill.

Hurricane Specialist at the National Hurricane Center Philippe Papin said on Sunday: ‘There have been tropical-storm-force winds observed, but those are starting to gradually subside as the system moves further inland.

‘However, there is a significant flooding rainfall threat for a large portion of eastern North Carolina into southern Virginia over the next 12 to 24 hours.’

NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said: ‘New Yorkers should take precautions regarding the forecast for high winds and rain during our first fall weekend.

‘This weekend’s weather is also a reminder that we are still in the middle of Atlantic Hurricane season and it is a great time to review your preparedness plan for your home or business, especially if you live in flood-prone areas.’

Footage showed the destruction caused in Greenville and Washington, North Carolina, Sunday morning after the storm brought heavy rain and major flooding.

Rescue teams with small boats made their way through the water to bring people trapped in cars and houses to safety.

On Sunday morning, 2,600 people were without power in North Carolina, and 5,800 were blacked out in New Jersey.

During the intense deluge on Saturday, there were over 52,000 people in North Carolina and Virginia without power – but the majority have now been restored.

The National Hurricane Center said in a morning update there will be a gradual weakening during the next 48 hours as the low center moves slowly offshore.

Water levels remain elevated within portions of Chesapeake Bay and its tidal rivers – but should gradually recede through today, experts said.

Throughout Sunday, portions of the Mid-Atlantic to southern New England will experience up to three inches of rainfall.

According to the NHC: ‘This rainfall may produce localized flash, urban, and small stream flooding impacts across portions of the Mid-Atlantic region into southern New England.

‘Isolated river flooding is possible in areas of heavier rainfall.

‘Swells generated by Ophelia will continue to affect much of the east coast of the United States through today.

‘These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.’

On Saturday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper issued his state’s emergency declaration, aiming to expedite preparations and help provide a swift response.

‘The storm’s path has been difficult to predict and we want to ensure that farmers, first responders and utility crews have the tools necessary to prepare for severe weather,’ the governor said.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order sought to ease response and recovery efforts.

‘We want to ensure that all communities, particularly those with the greatest anticipated impact, have the resources they need to respond and recover from the effects of this storm,’ Youngkin noted.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore said in a statement on Friday evening that the state expected an extended period of strong winds, heavy rainfall and elevated tides.

In Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, water taxi driver Scott Bierman said service would be closed Saturday.

‘We don’t operate when it´s going to endanger passengers and or damage vessels,’ Bierman said.

In Washington, the Nationals baseball team postponed its Saturday game until Sunday.

It is not uncommon for one or two tropical storms, or even hurricanes, to form off the East Coast each year, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said.

‘We’re right at the peak of hurricane season, we can basically have storms form anywhere across much of the Atlantic basin,’ Brennan said.

A devastating Ukrainian missile attack struck the headquarters of Russia‘s Black Sea Fleet today.

The Sevastopol HQ building is understood to have been hit with a Storm Shadow missile, the type supplied by Britain and France capable of holding a warhead of nearly 1000 lbs.

Russia’s defence ministry has claimed that one person is missing, after initially claiming they had died in the strike. Initial reports suggested that six people had been wounded.

Dozens of ambulances were reported at the headquarters in Sevastopol, the naval port in occupied Crimea.

The HQ building was on fire, had partially collapsed and suffered ‘severe damage’, according to one report.

Debris from the missile attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet was scattered over hundreds of metres.

Russia’s defence ministry claimed that five other missiles were shot down, but one made it through its defences.

‘According to preliminary information, people who were on the street at the time of the attack on the Black Sea Fleet headquarters were not injured,’ said Putin appointed Sevastopol governor Mikhail Razvozhayev.

A fire continued to burn at the headquarters building, admitted the governor.

Police cordoned off two blocks around the missile-hit building.

‘The enemies launched a missile attack on the fleet headquarters,’ said Razvozhayev.

He warned of the risk of a second attack and urged locals to stay away from the city.

‘A fragment [of a missile] fell close to the Lunacharsky Theatre. All emergency services arrived at the scene.

‘Information about the victims is being clarified. Please remain calm. And do not post photos and videos.’

The occupation official said: ‘Another attack is possible. Please do not travel to the city centre. Don’t leave buildings.

‘At the sound of the siren, everyone who is near the fleet headquarters should proceed to shelters.

‘Employees of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations are working on the spot.

‘Firefighters are taking all measures to put out the fire as quickly as possible. The build-up of forces and means continues.’

Putin did not mention the destruction of the Sevastopol HQ in a meeting with his military chiefs

Prominent Russian pro-war blogger Vladimir Rogov said: ‘The headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol was attacked by Ukrainian missiles.’

He said the attack was carried out ‘by British Storm Shadow missiles’, though this was not immediately confirmed.

The strike was one of the most significant of the entire war, as was the sinking of the Black Sea fleet’s flagship, the Moskva cruiser, last year.

The Black Sea Fleet has been responsible for multiple missile attacks on Ukraine, and is central to Putin’s subjugation of around one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

Other explosions hit elsewhere in Crimea including around peninsula capital Simferopol.

Ukraine has previously used Storm Shadow and Neptune missiles to target Crimea as well as kamikaze drones.

Drones were downed today in Sevastopol harbour.

The attack came as Vladimir Putin held a meeting of his security council on relations with neighbouring countries.

He was heard skirting around the attack, only mentioning ongoing developments with ‘relations with our closest neighbours and partners.’

World champion Aussie boxer Michael Zerafa has no doubt NRL star Nelson Asofa-Solomona will be an instant hit in the ring at next month’s Battle On The Reef fight night in Townsville.

The Melbourne Storm enforcer – who was powerless to stop Penrith marching into yet another NRL Grand Final on Friday night following a thumping 38-4 victory –  will don the gloves against Titans veteran Jarrod Wallace.

Zerafa revealed to Daily Mail Australia he trains in the same gym as the towering Kiwi international, and backed the 27-year-old to win his debut bout.

‘He is an absolute unit, I wouldn’t want to get on his bad side,’ Zerafa said.

‘I’m good mates with Nas, it has been a pleasure to see him grow.

‘I’m sure he will be disappointed that his [NRL] footy is over for this season, but he can’t dwell on it too much, he has to change his focus.

‘From what I’ve seen, he is super dedicated and super competitive when it comes to his boxing.

‘He will want to make a statement and get the win.’

Other NRL players fighting include Eels front-rower Junior Paulo, the recently retired Tevita Pangai Junior plus former greats Justin Hodges and Matt Cooper.

Meanwhile, Storm coach Craig Bellamy says it is time for Melbourne to learn from Penrith, who marched into their fourth successive Grand Final.

He labelled Ivan Cleary’s men the benchmark of the competition and believes it will take a special performance from either the Broncos or Warriors to deny them a historic three-peat of titles.

‘They are so good at what they do,’ Bellamy said. ‘They know what works for them and what their job is and they are so consistent.

‘We just seem to go up and down, sometimes we’re good and then not so good and that’s what we need to learn to do.’

The only place to watch the complete card of Battle On The Reef on October 7 is Stan Sport.

  • Bizarre sight occurred at opposed session
  • Storm are heavy underdogs for preliminary final
  • Both sides have stars returning from injury

Melbourne have taken their preparation for Friday night’s do-or-die finals clash with Penrith to new heights by taking the unusual step of getting several of their stars to wear the opposition’s jerseys at training.

The reigning premiers are clear favourites to win through to the grand final when the sides meet, with the Storm coming into the match on the back of a close win over the Roosters after being hammered 26-0 by Brisbane to start their finals campaign.

Images of Melbourne players including Tepai Moeroa and George Jennings wearing the Panthers’ strip have been revealed on social media, with the photos taken at an opposed session the team held recently.

Opposed sessions are used by footy teams to get as close as possible to match-day conditions and this one saw the club’s reserve players in the Penrith colours as they competed against the first-string stars.

The Storm have lost five matches in a row to Penrith and the use of the tops shows coach Craig Bellamy is trying every trick in the book to get his team over the line and into their fourth grand final since 2016.

Keen observers will note that the Panthers tops aren’t official match-day gear, but rather part of the team’s training kit.

Some footy fans reacted by applauding the move once the photos started going viral.

‘Bellyache.. masterstroke,’ one wrote, using Bellamy’s nickname.

‘You can bet your last dollar the Storm will be well prepared,’ another supporter added.

Others took the opportunity to find some humour in the strange sight of players wearing their rivals’ gear.

‘Did they buy the jerseys at Best n Less? Missing a few sponsors,’ one fan quipped.

‘Easily the best part about this is that they’re not jerseys or official apparel but instead are black t shirts that appear to have iron on motifs of our logo, sponsors and stripes … did they all go home and iron on their own,’ another speculated.

‘Funniest part about this is that the club will have forked out cash to pay for them,’ joked a third supporter.

Meanwhile, both sides have named injured stars for the clash at Sydney’s Accor Stadium.

Halfback Jahrome Hughes (pictured) had to sit out his team's narrow win over the Roosters last week with a calf injury, but is a very welcome inclusion for Friday night's final

The focus will remain firmly on Panthers five-eighth Luai and Storm halfback Hughes right until kick-off at Accor Stadium on Friday.

Luai hasn’t been sighted in the NRL since he suffered a dislocated shoulder in the penultimate round of the regular season, but is on track to return against the Storm.

The Panthers have soldiered on with Jack Cogger filling the void to partner Nathan Cleary, the former part of Penrith’s extended squad should Luai fail to pull through.

Centre Izack Tago has also overcome a pectoral injury to be named by Panthers coach Ivan Cleary.

Penrith's last outing was a 30-6 demolition of the New Zealand Warriors (pictured) and they are widely tipped to win their third premiership in a row

Penrith’s last outing was a 30-6 demolition of the New Zealand Warriors (pictured) and they are widely tipped to win their third premiership in a row

Melbourne will hope to welcome Hughes back into the fold, too, after the Kiwi international missed their semi-final win over the Sydney Roosters with a calf injury.

Hughes told reporters earlier this week he was confident he would be able to feature as the Storm aim to topple a Penrith side who have had their measure in four of the last five meetings.

Tyran Wishart moves to the bench with Hughes’ inclusion and could find himself starting for Harry Grant, who thrived against the Roosters when injected from the bench.

Winger Xavier Coates (ankle) remains sidelined for the Storm and is not named in their 22-man squad.

Question Time chaos as dozens of pharmacists dressed in white storm out of Parliament and heckle the government as ‘liars’

Pharmacists and their allies have stormed out of Parliament and heckled the government as ‘liars’ during chaotic scenes to kick off the new sitting week.

Health Minister Mark Butler was spruiking the government’s cheaper medicine policy in the House of Representatives Question Time on Monday when he drew the ire of dozens of protesters – all dressed in white – in the viewing gallery.

Seconds after Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley accused the government of ‘ripping out thousands of dollars from community pharmacy’, all the white coats rose to their feet in unison and stormed out of the chamber.

The group booed and jeered at the government, with some lifting their middle finger in the air while others gave a ‘thumbs down’ sign.

Calls of ‘liar’ echoed through the chamber from the protesters, as Speaker Milton Dick tried in vain to get the House in order.

The protesters were joined by the Opposition who also began shouting at the government, pointing fingers and directing attention up to the gallery

The protesters were joined by the Opposition who also began shouting at the government, pointing fingers and directing attention up to the gallery.

It was the second outburst from the gallery and prompted swift action from security guards, who helped to direct protesters out of the viewing area and proceeded to stand in the stairway.

Leader of the House Tony Burke later claimed parliamentary staff had been ‘subjected to verbal abuse by members of the public galleries’ – a situation which will now be reviewed.

Mr Dick said: ‘I warned those in the gallery early in Question Time today that they were not to participate and were not to interject during Question Time.

‘As a result of their behaviour, they have left the chamber. I want to say this going forward – there will be no interjections from the gallery.

‘For the rest of this week – and for the rest of the time that I’m Speaker – that will not happen again.’

These protesters had earlier gathered out the front of Parliament House to protest the government’s new prescription dispensing policy.

The policy will see patients get PBS prescriptions for 60 days for the same price as their current 30-day scripts, a move pharmacists fear will force them to let staff go and even shut up shop.

But it is expected to benefit four million Australians living with chronic health conditions.

Mr Butler said the program would deliver much needed cost relief for people to get the care they need.

‘People with a Medicare card buying just one of these medicines will save up to $180 every year. Concession card holders will save $43.80 a year for each eligible medicine,’ he said.

The Pharmacy Guild has consistently opposed the dispensing framework, claiming that it will force local pharmacies in regional areas to close down.

Earlier, Nationals Leader David Littleproud had met with these protesters, thanking them for being ‘the heroes of the pandemic’.

He said: ‘The men and women who stayed our communities and now are being discarded by this government because it’s politically expedient and saves them money.

‘What sort of government does that to the health professionals that got us through one of the biggest challenges this country has ever faced since the Second World War.  But for The Nationals, let me say this is deeply personal.’

Mr Littleproud is concerned about the viability of up to 400 pharmacies which are the ‘last line of primary healthcare defence’ in regional, rural and remote parts of Australia.

The Pharmacy Guild – which strongly opposes the policy – issued a statement immediately after the chaos distancing itself from the protesters.

‘The Pharmacy Guild of Australia is not and has never been involved with the organisation of events in Canberra today,’ the statement read.

Tropical Storm Hilary has triggered devastating mudslides across Southern California roadways.

A mudslide in Palmdale closed several lanes of the 14 Freeway on Sunday, with roads near Ocotillo and part of the I-8 near San Diego also experiencing blockages.

Crews worked to clear the slides but residents were urged not to undertake unnecessary travel by the California Transportation Department.

The state is enduring devastating floods and dangerously strong winds, as well as a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Ventura County and a tornado watch in San Diego.

Meanwhile even Death Valley National Park – often one of the hottest and driest places on earth – has been closed due to flooding.

As Hilary continues to wreak havoc across the state:

  • Biden said he was monitoring the storm and urged people to take it seriously;
  • Counties in Southern California declared emergencies for the tropical storm;
  • A hospital in the Coachella Valley flooded after a nearby pond burst its banks;
  • LA and San Diego schools were closed through the weekend until Monday;
  • One person was killed and four rescued in Baja California following the storm.

Also on Sunday California was hit by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake as Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall in LA and San Diego with 80mph winds.

The quake centered in Ventura County was felt across parts of Southern California on Sunday afternoon.

The center is reported to have been four miles southeast of Ojai, about 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Shaking was reported in Malibu, Porter Ranch, parts of Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach and other locations.

A tornado warning has also been issued for San Diego and the surrounding Alpine and Descanso areas.

The National Weather Service released the warning at t 3:39 p.m. on Sunday local time, and will last until 4pm.

The United States Geological Survey, which reports and records earthquakes, said there were at least four aftershocks of magnitude-3.0 or greater.

It comes as Tropical Storm Hilary makes landfall in Southern California moving up from Mexico at speeds of 25mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Residents are contending with winds of 65mph and the expectation of torrential rain, that may bring up to ten inches in a matter of hours in some places.

At least one person has already died after their vehicle was swept away near Santa Rosalía, after catastrophic flooding swallowed parts of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula.

The death occurred when a vehicle was swept away in an overflowing stream. Rescue workers managed to save four other people, said Edith Aguilar Villavicencio, the mayor of Mulege township.

Hilary had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and was moving northwest at 25 mph as it swept through the cities of Ensenada and Tijuana.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell told CBS during an interview on Sunday that residents can expect ‘significant impact.’

Though the total amount of rain appears unlikely to exceed that of similar storms seen on the East Coast, people should not downplay the threat, Criswell added.

‘People really need to take this storm in California serious,’ she reiterated on ABC.

Panicked stockpiling and chilling images of empty streets have given a small glimpse into things to come as residents batten down the hatches in preparation for the treacherous weather.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency on Saturday for a large swathe of his constituency adding: ‘We’re mobilizing all of government as we prepare and respond to this unprecedented storm.’

While a majority of people took shelter from the storm, others braved wet conditions to bask in the precursor to the storm which had grown to the size of the state of Arizona.

Boulder storm ‘as deadly as Hiroshima’ accidentally unleashed by NASA during test to change the trajectory of an asteroid

A boulder swarm ‘as deadly as Hiroshima’ was accidentally unleashed by NASA during its first planetary defense mission last year.

Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, identified 37 boulders up to 22 feet wide that scattered off the surface of the moonlet Dimorphos after a spacecraft smashed into it.

The mission, known as the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), aimed to push the moonlet off its orbit in the event of an asteroid barreling toward Earth.

While the test was a success, it came with unintended consequences: Smaller rocks flying off into space could create their own problems,’ the team shared in a press release.

Even a 15-foot boulder hitting Earth would deliver as much energy as the atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city during World World II.

Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, identified 37 boulders up to 22 feet wide that scattered off the surface of the moonlet Dimorphos after a spacecraft smashed into it.

The team likened the swarm of space rocks to a ‘cloud of shrapnel expanding from a hand grenade’ soaring through space at 13,000 miles per hour.

While none of the rubble is on a collision course with Earth, scientists are weary that a boulder storm from a future asteroid deflection could impact our planet at the same speed the asteroid was traveling — fast enough to cause tremendous damage.

NASA launched its DART in 2022 to move Dimorphos off its orbit, circling its parent asteroid Didymos.

On September 26, the world watched as DART soared 15,000 miles per hour toward Dimorphos-  and its orbit went from 11 hours and 55-minute orbit to 11 hours and 23 minutes following impact.

Ultimately deemed a success, DART is now touted as a way to protect our planet from a catastrophic asteroid impact.

A new study led by UCLA astronomer David Jewitt said: ‘Because those big boulders basically share the speed of the targeted asteroid, they’re capable of doing their own damage.’

DART spacecraft collided with the 560-foot asteroid, around 6.7 million miles away from Earth

Jewitt said that given the high speed of a typical impact, a 15-foot boulder hitting Earth would deliver as much energy as the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

Dimorphos was never a threat to Earth but was chosen by NASA as the test target because it is six million miles from our planet.

This makes the moonlet close enough to be of interest but far enough not to have implications in case of unintended consequences like what UCLA found.

The team analyzed images taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in December 2022, finding 37 boulders were released from the surface of Dimorphos.

The research, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, found that the rocks were likely knocked off the surface by the shock of the impact.

A close-up photograph DART took just two seconds before the collision shows a similar number of boulders sitting on the asteroid’s surface — of similar sizes and shapes — to those imaged by the Hubble telescope.

Dimorphos was littered with boulders (Atabaque) before being pushed off its orbit. These rocks measure up to 22 feet wide

The boulders the scientists studied, among the faintest objects ever seen within the solar system, are observable in detail thanks to the powerful Hubble telescope.

‘If we follow the boulders in future Hubble observations, we may have enough data to pin down the boulders’ precise trajectories,’ Jewitt said.

‘And then we’ll see in which directions they were launched from the surface and figure out exactly how they were ejected.’

The team believes the boulders were ejected from the impact site or launched from the surface by seismic shaking.

Ukraine used a British-supplied Storm Shadow missile to hit a key bridge between Crimea and Russian-held parts of the Kherson region in Ukraine, pro-Moscow sources have claimed.

Vladimir Saldo, the Russia-appointed Kherson governor, said the Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles were likely to have been used for the attack, which damaged the road on the Chongar bridge. No casualties have been reported.

The strike comes just two days after the Kremlin warned that it would see the UK as ‘full-fledged’ participants in the war in Ukraine if the Storm Shadow missiles hit Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Images show a large hole in the bridge, revealing the water below, as well as rubble strewn across the road. The damaged bridge was still standing but the extent of the internal structural damage was not immediately clear.

Saldo vowed: ‘There will soon be a very serious answer.’ The governor described the attack as ‘another senseless action ordered from London by the Kyiv regime.’

‘It solves nothing for the results of the special operation. Just to do harm,’ Saldo added.

Crimea’s governor, Sergey Aksyonov, said specialists were examining the site to determine when traffic over the bridge, which connects Crimea to the Russian-held parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, could resume.

The crossing is the closest link from Crimea to Melitopol and is a key supply route for Vladimir Putin’s forces to the disputed peninsula, and vice-versa.

One Russian report referred to the ‘barbarous shelling of civilian objects’ in describing the bridge attack.

Acting Moscow-appointed supremo of the invaded Kherson region Vladimir Saldo said: ‘According to a preliminary assessment, British Storm Shadow missiles were used. The road surface on the bridges was damaged. There are no human casualties.’

Communication between Crimea and Kherson region continues to operate via a backup route, he said.

Alexander Kots, military correspondent of Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper said: ‘The enemy has begun to cut off Crimea from the Kherson region.

‘Storm Shadow missile strikes [have been made] on the bridge at Chongar – one of the isthmuses connecting the peninsula to the mainland.’

He saw the attack as evidence that Britain was now directly involved in the conflict.

This should entail ‘immediate strikes against decision-making centers on the territory of Ukraine’, he said.

It comes two days after Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu warned the UK and US they would be seen as ‘full-fledged’ participants in the Ukraine war if Storm Shadow and HIMARS missiles are used to hit targets in Russia or Crimea.

Shoigu warned he will target ‘decision-making centres’ in Ukraine – implying he plans to order his military to target Volodymyr Zelensky and his government leaders in Kyiv.

The Storm Shadow missiles, accurate to beyond 150 miles, allow Ukrainian forces to strike deeper into Russian-held territory than was previously the case

Shoigu said on Tuesday: ‘According to our information, the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is planning to launch strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including Crimea, with HIMARS and Storm Shadow missiles.

‘The use of these missiles outside the area of the special military operation would mean a full-fledged involvement of the US and UK in the conflict entailing immediate strikes on the decision-making centres in Ukraine.’

His claim that Crimea is part of Russia is disputed by the West – and international law – which regards it as Ukrainian.

Russia is rattled at the power and accuracy of the Storm Shadow with a range of 155 miles, which has been fired from Ukrainian Su-24 war planes.

‘The Kyiv regime is employing a large number of Western weapons and elite formations whose personnel have been trained by NATO specialists,’ Shoigu told the collegium of the Russian defence ministry earlier this week.

So far Ukraine has used long-range British-supplied Storm Shadow and US-provided HIMARS to hit targets in Russian-occupied areas of mainland Ukraine, not including Crimea.

At least one Russian general and one colonel have been killed in Ukrainian attacks using the UK Storm Shadow missile.

Col Sergei Postovalov, 53, was fatally wounded in a 10 June strike which hit a Russian command post close to Henichesk minutes after Putin’s deputy premier Denis Manturov had visited.

Putin was reported to have visited the site in April.

Postovalov was a colonel in the Russian Interior Ministry forces.

His death follows the killing of Russian army Major-General Sergey Goryachev, 52, in a strike in annexed Zaporizhzhia region earlier this month – also seen as in a Storm Shadow attack carried out by Ukraine’s forces.

Last week, Yevgeny Balitsky, Moscow-appointed head of the occupied Zaporizhzhia region in Ukraine, admitted the weapons are causing ‘trouble’ and are even more problematic for the Kremlin’s armies than the US-supplied HIMARS systems.

His words confirm the impression that the long-range Storm Shadow has been a game changer for the Ukrainians as Kyiv launches its counteroffensive.

‘They certainly give us trouble with their missiles, I must say, especially Storm Shadow,’ said Balitsky.

‘We’ve somehow learned how to shoot down [US-supplied] HIMARS.

But the [British-supplied] Shadow ones are even harder. They arrive, and have a bigger radius. So it’s a problem for us.

‘In fact, our air defence is having a hard time with [Storm Shadow].

‘It shoots them down, but there’s only a 50 per cent chance of the missiles being shot down.’

He added: ‘Out of four, three have recently reached us.

‘Sometimes two make it. The missile is modern, although it is not the newest, but it is fast enough, it flies properly. I mean, at different speeds, at varying altitudes, changing modes, so it is not easy to shoot down.’

Britain announced the supply of Anglo-French-designed Storm Shadows to Ukraine on May 11, answering a long-time demand from Kyiv for long-range missiles to help defend their territory against Putin’s invading armies.

Storm Shadows have also struck occupied port cities Berdiansk and Mariupol on the Sea of Azov, say reports. And the £2.2million-per-unit missiles were used to target Luhansk in the occupied Donbas.

The GPS-guided ground-hugging missiles with a 450kg warhead have a range of around 155 miles. The missiles allow Ukrainian forces to strike deeper into Russian-held territory than was previously possible.

Storm Shadow is a low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed since 1994 by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace previously confirmed the missiles had been used by Ukraine on May 18– but declined to give further details.

He said the missiles gave the Ukrainians the ability to strike Russian command and control centres which had been moved further behind the front line to keep them out of range of the rocket artillery systems the West had supplied to Kyiv.

Ukraine is the only country to be publicly supplied with these missiles by the UK.

Millie Mackintosh, who said she was ‘ghosted’ by Meghan Markle after the actress met Prince Harry, is no fan of fake friends.

Yet the former Made in Chelsea star is a big fan of fake grass.

Millie, 33, whose great, great-grandfather invented Quality Street chocolates, has whipped up a social media storm after promoting her new, artificial lawn, which experts warn is ‘crime against nature’.

In an Instagram post for which she was paid, Millie gushed: ‘We are loving spending time outside now that our patio area has been transformed.’

The backlash included responses such as: ‘Nature doesn’t have a chance with this dreadful product. I’m with Monty Don, who is trying to get the Government to ban plastic grass.’

Last month, Millie spoke about the ‘abrupt’ end of her friendship with the Duchess of Sussex, saying she ‘felt like [Meghan] kind of told me to f*** off, basically’.

Speaking on her Mumlemmas podcast, the Made In Chelsea star, 33, revealed she became pals with the Suits star after they met at a hotel event in Turkey, and even ‘gave her all of her contacts,’ when she moved to London.

Millie added that she and Meghan met up in the capital and she shared her favourite hotspots, but things changed when rumours swirled that she and Harry were dating.

She added that she sent Meghan a message offering her well-wishes, but was surprised to receive an ‘abrupt’ response.

Millie went onto tell her co-host Charlie Boud that she felt snubbed by Meghan after reading the response, and decided she wouldn’t contact her again.

She explained: ‘Years ago, I’d say about eight years ago, I went to the opening of a hotel in Istanbul and I met Meghan Markle.

‘I was a fan, I watched Suits, and we met at the bar and we were both ordering a drink at the same time I started chatting. We got on really well, we got on like a house on fire, and just stayed in touch.

‘Then we went to lunch, she didn’t know London very well, she’d never been to Chelsea, so I took her to The Ivy on Kings Road.

‘She didn’t know anyone so I gave her the best places to get your nails done, basically my little black book. I gave her all my contacts.’

Millie said she and Meghan bonded over their marital troubles, as the Made In Chelsea star was married to rapper Professor Green at the time, and Meghan had previously split from her first husband Trevor Engelson.

She continued: ‘When we first met I was married, going through a bit of a turbulent time, and I got divorced, and she was divorced so we had quite a lot to talk about.

‘That was quite bonding, and we were both into our wellness, she had our blog, we were both just into the same things.

‘We hung out a handful of times, we weren’t best friends, but whenever she was in town she’d let me know and we would just hang out.’

‘Then the last time I saw her was down at a hotel in the Cotswolds, she was staying there, what I thought was going to be a day of yoga ended up being rosè and margaritas in the pool.

‘It was a really fun afternoon, there were pictures taken of us riding around on the bikes. That was the last time I saw her.’

Millie explained that Meghan briefly mentioned she was dating Harry during their final meeting, and weeks later, rumours of their relationship began to swirl.

She continued: ‘When I was there, we were chatting and she told me about Harry and that they were messaging, and a friend had introduced them.

‘I don’t know him, just to clarify, I’ve never met him. Me and Harry do not know each other I’ve never met him. I didn’t really ask too much about it.’

Millie added that she reached out to Meghan when her relationship with Harry came to light.

She added: ‘I messaged her and said, ”Hey I hope you’re OK, thinking of you,” and she sent me this really abrupt message, that was really unlike any of our communications before.’

Millie, who did not disclose the message she received, added that she didn’t question Meghan about her relationship with Harry.

She added: ‘It’s not like I messaged her asking if it was true, that was none of my business.

‘What I read from that message was that she needed a bit of space, to cool off.

‘I didn’t message her again, but I did expect that we would stay in touch. I thought she’d message back and say, ”Sorry everything is a bit stressful right now.”

‘I never heard from her again. I felt like she’d basically told me to f**k off in that message. So I did. And we haven’t spoken since.’

The former reality TV star then expressed her opinion on what was behind the message: ‘My take on it is that, this is my instinct why it happened at the time, she thought right I’m gonna be royal now, I don’t need Millie in my life.

‘I was on a reality show at the time, she thought, “I can’t be associated with Made In Chelsea, I’m gonna be royal.”
