  • Researchers say Generation X is particularly to blame for accent falling off a cliff
  • Study based on white people native to Georgia born from 19th century to 2000s

From Matthew McConaughey‘s signature drawl, to the dulcet tones of Reese Witherspoon and Renée Zellweger, the Southern American accent is synonymous with a number of Hollywood blockbusters.

But perhaps not for much longer.

That’s because new research suggests the classic accent in dying out among younger people — with Generation X particularly to blame.

Scientists observed the most notable change between baby boomers and those born between 1965 and 1982, when the accent fell off a cliff.

‘We found that, here in Georgia, white English speakers’ accents have been shifting away from the traditional Southern pronunciation for the last few generations,’ said lead author Margaret Renwick, associate professor at the University of Georgia (UGA).

‘Today’s college students don’t sound like their parents, who didn’t sound like their own parents.’

She added: ‘We had been listening to hundreds of hours of speech recorded in Georgia and we noticed that older speakers often had a thick Southern drawl, while current college students didn’t.’

Professor Renwick said this in turn led them to ask the question ‘which generation of Georgians sounds the most Southern of all?’

‘We surmised that it was baby boomers, born around the mid-20th century,’ she added.

‘We were surprised to see how rapidly the Southern accent drops away starting with Gen X.’

The team of researchers are the first to identify the accent shift in Georgia.

Their analysis was based on recordings of white people native to Georgia who were born from the late 19th century to the early 2000s, with the researches specifically focusing on the way the speakers pronounced vowels.

They found that older Georgians pronounced the word ‘prize’ as prahz and ‘face’ as fuh-eece, but the youngest speakers use prah-eez and fayce.

‘Changes to the diphthong in “prize” are the oldest characteristic pronunciation in Southern speech, that can be traced back well over 100 years,’ Professor Renwick said.

‘The Southern pronunciation of words like “face” emerged in the early 20th century. These are distinctive features of the traditional Southern drawl.’

‘The demographics of the South have changed a lot with people moving into the area, especially post World War II,’ said co-author Jon Forrest, UGA assistant professor in the department of linguistics.

He added that what scientists had observed in Georgia was part of an overall shift not just in other southern states but across the wider US as well.

We are seeing similar shifts across many regions, and we might find people in California, Atlanta, Boston and Detroit that have similar speech characteristics,’ Professor Forrest explained.

As linguistic patterns differ for other ethnic groups, the researchers now want to study cross-generational accents among African Americans, too.

The new study has been published in the journal Language Variation and Change.

Northern accents across England are dying out and could disappear by 2066, study warns

From the approachable Geordie dialect to the instantly recognisable Liverpool lilt, many of England’s most distinctive accents are from the north.

But a 2021 study warned that northern accents could all but disappear by the year 2066.

Using physics modelling, researchers from the Universities of Portsmouth and Cambridge predicted how accents are likely to change across England.

Their findings suggest that northern accents could be replaced with ‘posh’ south eastern pronunciations.

However, certain north-south differences are predicted to remain – we will continue to disagree about the pronunciation of `bath’, according to the researchers.

Keanu Reeves was spotted signing a few autographs for his fans before he performs with his rock band Dogstar.

The 58-year-old actor was seen carrying his bass guitar while walking into the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California, three hours north of Los Angeles, on Thursday afternoon.

The Matrix and John Wick star was also seen generously signing autographs for a few waiting fans at the latest performance of his first Dogstar tour in 20 years.

Reeves was spotted wearing a black t-shirt under a grey and black checkered suit coat for the outing.

He was wearing a brown baseball cap with black sunglasses as he headed to the venue with security personnel, completing his look with dark jeans and brown boots.

The upcoming performance is just the latest in the musical resurgence of Reeves, who reunited with his band Dogstar after a 20-year hiatus.

Reeves initially formed Dogstar in 1991 with Robert Mailhouse and Gregg Miller, though Brett Domrose joined the group in 1994.

They released a four-track EP Quattro Formaggi in 1996 and their first full-length album Our Little Visionary.

Their second album Happy Ending was released in 1999, though they broke up in 2002.

Over the years, the group would occasionally reunite for jam sessions, but during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, they spent more time in quarantine together.

Their jam sessions ultimately turned into songwriting sessions, which ultimately produced enough material for a new album.

They declared, ‘We’re back,’ in a July 2022 Instagram post, and performed again for the first time in two decades at the Bottle Rock Napa Valley Music Festival in May 2023.

The group launched their first single Everything Turns Around in mid-July, from their new album Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, due out October 6.

Dogstar also announced a 25-date tour in support of the album, which began August 10 in Hermosa Beach, California.

Reeves will next be performing at the Ventura Music Hall in Ventura, California on August 26, followed by the Belly-Up Tavern in Solano Beach, California on August 27 and The Observatory in Santa Ana, California on August 28.

The tour will then take them to Japan for several dates in September, before returning to the United States for a slew of shows through the fall and early winter.

The tour concludes with a pair of shows at the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville on December 20 and December 21.

Southern Water pins efficiency hopes on ‘LeakBot’ trial

  • LeakBot will be introduced in a trial to over 1,000 customers in the group’s area

Under fire water company Thames Water has partnered with a home tech insurance claims prevention specialist to cut down on leakages with use of a new tool.

Southern Water, which provide water to over 2.5million homes in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent, will introduce Ondo InsurTech’s ‘LeakBot’ in a trial to over 1,000 customers.

LeakBot is a self-install solution that connects to the home wireless network and, if it detects a leak, notifies the customer via the LeakBot mobile app and provides access to a team of expert LeakBot engineers to ‘find and fix’ the problem.

Southern Water, which currently sits on a £5.2billion debt pilew,  has ranked among the poorest performers in the struggling UK water industry, having faced criticism for its record on pollution in particular.

The group hopes to achieving similar water reduction results via the LeakBot trial as that seen during a test in Portsmouth earlier this year.

The Portsmouth results showed LeakBot was able to prevent water leaks within the Portsmouth Water area by 60 per cent, which is estimated to be around 24 litres per day and is 67 per cent of the 36 litres a day Ofwat target.

Based on the findings, if LeakBot were rolled out to Southern Water customers, 83 megalitres of water a day could be saved – the equivalent of 32 Olympic swimming pools, according to the firm.

Tim McMahon, managing director of water at Southern Water, said: ‘There has never been a more pressing time to save every drop of water. The South East is officially water stressed.

‘Climate change, causing hotter summers and less rainfall, and population growth means we have more people and less water to go around. So, we must act to reduce water wastage.

‘We’re working with our customers reduce water use and are exploring new technology to help us find and fix more leaks quickly in our network.

‘We’ve been impressed by the results of the activity we’ve seen so far from LeakBot and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact this technology could have on reducing leaks and improving engagement in the Southern Water area.’

Earlier this year, Ofwat claimed that around 20 per cent of water running through pipes in England and Wales is currently being lost to leakage and has identified this an issue of growing importance amid population growth and climate change.

In June, the water industry watchdog gave the green light to the acceleration of around £2.2billion worth of investments to reduce leaks and river pollution.

Ofwat approved 33 investment schemes put forward by water companies, which include measures to improve water quality and install smart meters.

The first tranche of investments is set to begin in the next two financial years, from 2023 to 2025, with projects to be completed by 2030.

Craig Foster, Ondo CEO, said: ‘We’re increasingly excited about the opportunity to work with water companies to reduce water wasted through leaks.

‘When combining the business cases for both water companies and insurers, we have a proposition which could scale quickly and really add benefit to both industries and their customers.

‘To get us closer to this large-scale opportunity, we’re looking forward to working with Southern Water on our second pilot within the water industry.’

Water damage is the single biggest cause of home insurance claims, accounting for $17bn of claims every year in the USA and UK combined.

Macquarie pours fresh funds into Southern Water

Macquarie has poured another half-a-billion pounds into struggling Southern Water, taking its stake in the group to over 75 per cent.

The Australian asset manager injected £550million into the utilities group – which takes the total amount of the bailout to £1.65billion following a similar cash infusion two years ago.

That investment prevented the industry regulator Ofwat from placing the water group into administration.

The rescue comes amid a financial crisis in the water industry. Several of the UK’s privatised regional monopolies are finding themselves strapped for cash after loading up on debt and paying out bumper dividends to investors.

Southern Water supplies areas including Hampshire, Sussex, Kent and the Isle of Wight.

It is sitting on a £5.2billion debt pile that was recently downgraded – making it more expensive for the firm to borrow, while also banning it from paying dividends to shareholders.

The company said that of the £550million cash infusion, around £375million would be used to ‘support additional investment aimed at protecting the environment and better serving our customers’.

Southern Water is one of the poorest performing water firms in Britain and has been repeatedly criticised for its record on pollution. It was found to have dumped sewage in areas ranging from oyster beds near Whitstable in Kent to sailing waters off Hampshire.

Macquarie has previously been blamed for a similar crisis at rival utility group, Thames Water, in which it was formerly the largest shareholder.

In May 2022, Green wrote on Instagram: ‘Almost 5 years ago, my older sister was diagnosed with 2 different types of ovarian cancer; she was a damn warrior and kicked its a** after a few months of holistic treatment.’

Taylor Ann continued: ‘We were so excited for her and her husband to hopefully have the chance of starting a family, but here we are 4 and a half years later and it has decided to rear its ugly head again. Truly F you cancer.’

Catie announced in December that she had undergone ‘[h]opefully my last major surgery ever needed, an oophorectomy of my only ovary and tube I had left.’

She wrote wanly: ‘A part of us is gone and will never be what we dreamt of, but we trust God’s greater plan for our little family.’

Conner’s death was preceded by a years-long battle with Lyme disease, as well as a turbulent past including arrests for drug offenses and driving under the influence.

His exact cause of death has not been made public, but his sister wrote on Instagram last month that his Lyme disease left him battling ‘debilitating symptoms over the last 17 years.’

Olivia added that he was subjected to ‘several misdiagnoses and unnecessary medicinal treatment at a young age.’

She went on: ‘By the time he was properly tested and given a diagnosis from Dr. Jemsek, a God send, and an infectious disease specialist, the disease had caused severe internal damage, and the consequences from his earlier ‘treatment’ were just as long-lasting and devastating.’

If your first thought when hearing ‘get down from the car’ is that someone is standing on your hood, you’re probably not from southern Florida.

Researchers have identified new speech patterns and expressions in the greater Miami area that they believe are a new English dialect developed over time from repeated direct translations between Spanish and English speakers.

The linguists compared local and national responses to over 50 turns of phrase that were increasingly common in Miami — like ‘get down from the car’ instead of ‘get out of the car.’

Those choices in words are because the standard Spanish phrase is ‘bajar del carro,’ and ‘bajar’ means ‘to get down.’

Locals were much more likely to rate these expressions as ‘okay’ or even ‘perfect’ compared to the majority of national subjects surveyed, who found phrases like ‘make the line’ for ‘wait in line’ to be ‘awkward.’

Linguists have identified a new English dialect in the greater Miami area, which they believe developed over time from repeated direct translations between Spanish and English speakers

‘Words come from somewhere and someplace,’ wrote the study’s lead author Phillip Carter, a sociolinguist at Florida International University, for The Conversation.

‘Every word has a history. That goes for all words spoken in Miami.’

Carter and his coauthor, SUNY Buffalo linguist Kristen D’Allessandro Merii, identified three categories of borrowed phrases, or ‘claques,’ that have come into frequent use in Miami from direct Spanish-to-English translations between people.

First, they found ‘literal lexical calques,’ or direct, word-for-word translations of many common Spanish phrases, in routine use around southern Florida.

For example, the researchers found residents said ‘throw a photo,’ from ‘tirar una foto,’ as a variation of ‘take a photo.’

Given this history, native Spanish speakers are much more likely to think of themselves as stepping ‘down’ from the car to the curb moreso than stepping ‘out’ of the car.

The second category the linguists found was ‘semantic calques’ based on unique double or multiple meanings for words in Spanish. The word ‘carne,’ for example, can translate to mean either all kinds of ‘meat’ or ‘beef’ specifically, depending on the context.

‘We discovered local speakers saying ‘meat’ to refer specifically to ‘beef,” Carter wrote in a recent essay for The Conversation, ‘as in, ‘I’ll have one meat empanada and two chicken empanadas.”

Researchers at Florida International University and SUNY Buffalo compared local and national responses to over 50 turns of phrases that are newly common to Miami. Locals were much more likely to rate these expressions as 'okay' or even 'perfect' compared to national subjects

Researchers at Florida International University and SUNY Buffalo compared local and national responses to over 50 turns of phrases that are newly common to Miami. Locals were much more likely to rate these expressions as ‘okay’ or even ‘perfect’ compared to national subjects

Their last category, ‘phonetic calques,’ covered new phrases where aspects of a word’s Spanish equivalent carries over into the speaker’s English usage.

According to Carter and Merii, many in Miami hold so closely hold ‘thanks’ and ‘gracias’ in their minds that they view the final ‘s’ as comparable.

So, you’re more likely to hear someone say ‘Thanks God’ there, inspired by ‘gracias a Dios,’ than in most other parts of the United States.

The linguistic researchers collected their data by surveying the reactions of both first- and second-generation Cuban Americans in Miami, getting their reaction to different phrasings unique to their region.

They pulled in a national perspective by conducting the same survey via Amazon’s crowdsourcing marketplace Mechanical Turk.

While their results, published in April in the academic journal English World-Wide, found that some claques faded out between the first and second generations of Cuban immigrants — some expressions stuck.

Phrases like ‘get down from the car,’ ‘super hungry’ and ‘meat empanada’ were still commonly used among second-generation Cuban Americans. Even very particular phrasings, like ‘give me a chance’ meaning ‘let me cross,’ was used by both generations.

Many of these were phrases the national audience found via Mechanical Turk were more likely to rate as ‘awkward.’

National audiences were particularly baffled by ‘made the line’ used instead of ‘waiting in line’ and ‘eating shit’ as a euphemism for ‘doing nothing.’

‘This is how dialects are born,’ Carter said in a university press statement. ‘Minor things add up.’

‘This shows Miamians assess certain phrases differently and don’t see some examples as ‘ungrammatical,” he explained. ‘So, those are the ones that are passed down.’

Carter quickly points out how fluid and patchwork all human languages are.

He said that what’s happening in Miami is not an entirely unique state of melding or some breakdown in English decorum, but the natural state of human speech over millennia.

Everyone may recognize the French origins of a word like ‘croissant’ or a phrase like ‘Déjà vu,’ but the English language is laced thoroughly with more borrowed loan words than most would recognize.

‘Pajamas’ from Hindi; ‘gazelle’ from Arabic, via French; and ‘tsunami’ from Japanese,’ Carter noted.

Each new introduction of foreign words into a new language brings with it the history that brought it there, in his view, be it through war, colonialism, immigration or other factors.

‘When we conduct research like this, it’s a reminder there aren’t ‘real’ or ‘pretend’ words,’ Carter said. ‘There are only words.’

Ukraine launched attacks on Russian forces in the key southern Zaporozhzhia region and on the eastern front today, a Russian official said, in what observers believe could be the start of Kyiv‘s long-expected offensive.

Ukraine has not offered any confirmation but expectations have built for months over when its forces, bolstered with Western weapons and training, would launch a counter-offensive in a bid to reclaim land occupied by Russian forces.

Pro-war Russian bloggers reported intense battles today on the Zaporizhzhia front near the city of Orikhiv, around the mid-point of the ‘land bridge’ linking Russia to the Crimea peninsula, seen as one of Ukraine’s main potential targets.

‘At the moment, active combat is ongoing in the region between Orekhovo and Tokmak,’ Vladimir Rogov, an official with Russian occupation authorities, wrote on the Telegram messaging service, referring to a locality known in Ukrainian as Orikhiv.

Alexander Sladkov, a correspondent for Russian media, wrote on Telegram of ‘intense fighting’ in the area.

‘The enemy is undertaking incredible efforts, attacks. In vain. Our forces are holding on. The front line is stable,’ he wrote.

The information could not be independently verified and so it was impossible to assess the degree to with Ukraine’s operation was underway.

Ukraine’s army said only that ‘the adversary remains on the defensive’ in Zaporizhzhia, in a Facebook post. It said it destroyed four missiles and 10 drones, out of some 20 that Russia had fired at ‘military installations and critical infrastructure’.

The fighting comes as the humanitarian and environmental cost climbed after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam unleashed destructive flooding in a different part of Ukraine’s south.

Russia said on Thursday that its forces had fought a two-hour battle with Ukrainian troops in the early hours in the Zaporizhzhia region, which neighbours the flood-hit areas.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the Ukrainian offensive involved 1,500 soldiers and 150 armoured vehicles.

‘The enemy was stopped and retreated after heavy losses,’ he said.

Ukrainian officials have said their forces are ready for a long-expected counteroffensive but that there would be no formal announcement when it begins.

In its few comments, Ukraine has reported gains of territory in the east around the city of Bakhmut, which Russian forces captured last month after nearly a year of the deadliest ground combat in Europe since World War Two.

But Kyiv has said virtually nothing about the southern front, widely assumed to be the focus of its main assault as it tries to push towards the coast and cut Russia’s access to Crimea.

In his nightly video address, delivered on a train after a visit to the flood zone in the south, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy thanked Ukrainian troops and repeated earlier claims of success in Bakhmut, but gave no further account.

‘We see every detail. But it’s not time to talk about it today,’ he said.

Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar described heavy fighting in the east, where she said Ukrainian troops had mainly held off Russian attacks.

On the southern front she said only that battles were continuing for the settlement of Velyka Novosilka and that Russian troops were mounting ‘active defence’ at Orikhiv.

Ukraine has been attacking targets deep in Russian-held territory for weeks in preparation for its assault.

The initial days of the counter-offensive have been overshadowed this week by a humanitarian disaster after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam holding back the waters of the Dnipro River that bisects Ukraine.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate homes flooded in the war zone, vast nature preserves have been wiped out and the destruction to irrigation systems is likely to cripple agriculture across much of southern Ukraine for decades.

Emergency services were racing to rescue people stranded by the flood-swollen waters of the Dnipro.

Ukrainian authorities said water levels in a reservoir which had been created by the Kakhovka dam had fallen ‘below the critical point of 12.7 metres (42 feet)’.

They said the reservoir was no longer able to supply households and the cooling ponds at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, Europe’s largest.

However late Thursday the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said he nuclear plant was continuing to receive water from the reservoir after the dam was damaged.

The plant’s six reactors have been shut down but they still need cooling water to ensure there is no nuclear disaster.

Ukraine meanwhile called on Europe to double power supplies to two gigawatts.

Ukraine accuses Russia, whose forces control the dam area, of blowing up the dam, while Russia accuses Ukraine hitting it with artillery. Ukrhydroenergo, the dam’s operator, said it was most likely mined from the inside.

Kyiv said on Friday it had intercepted a phone call proving that Russian forces in control of the dam had blown it up. Moscow says Ukraine sabotaged it.

Western countries say they are still gathering evidence but that Ukraine would have no reason to inflict such a devastating disaster on itself, especially right as its forces were shifting onto the attack.

The emergency service has warned the flood water has dislodged land mines that pose a threat to civilians.

The government has also sounded the alarm over the environmental impact, calling it ‘a crime of ecocide’.
