Republicans want to IMPEACH Biden if they retake the House: GOP want to try President for ‘high crimes’ over the border and the Afghanistan withdrawal

  • Some Republican lawmakers are signaling that they’ll make impeaching President Joe Biden a priority if their party wins control of the House
  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s office told DailyMail.com that she intends to file for impeachment against Biden next year
  • She and other Republicans have called to impeach Biden multiple times
  • It had virtually no chance of passing in the Democrat-controlled House
  • House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy previously vowed not to impeach Biden for ‘political purposes’ but did not rule it out altogether

Members  of the House GOP are ramping up calls to impeach President Joe Biden if their party takes control of the House of Representatives in the November midterms.

Republicans are still projected to overtake Democrats‘ slim majority in Congress’ lower chamber despite a slump in support following the Supreme Court and several red states’ rollbacks of abortion rights.

The last year and a half has seen multiple GOP lawmakers accuse Biden of ‘high crimes and misdemeanors,’ primarily over the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal and the continuing crisis on the southern border with Mexico.

The largely symbolic efforts had no chance of passing in the Democrat-controlled House.

But with less than three months before the races – which have the potential to upend Biden’s agenda-setting power for the latter half of his term – conservative lawmakers are making clear that ousting the president is one of their top priorities.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene – who has introduced impeachment articles against Biden in the past over Afghanistan, the border and the Supreme Court – will be doing so again next year, DailyMail.com has learned.

‘Congresswoman Greene wanted Joe Biden to be impeached on his first day in office. She thinks it should happen as soon as possible,’ Greene’s spokesman Nick Dyer told DailyMail.com.

House Republicans are once again renewing calls to impeach President Joe Biden with less than three months until the midterm elections

House Republicans are once again renewing calls to impeach President Joe Biden with less than three months until the midterm elections

‘She will be introducing Articles of Impeachment in the 118th Congress.’

Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona said Tuesday morning that it’s ‘not just Biden’ they’re after in comments made on Twitter.

Asked by DailyMail.com for clarification, his office joined growing GOP calls to impeach the Homeland Security Secretary over the migrant crisis and verbal attacks on the Attorney General over the Justice Department’s investigations into Donald Trump.

Texas Rep. Chip Roy’s office pointed DailyMail.com to the former prosecutor’s calls for Biden and Mayorkas’ impeachment last year.

‘Over the past several months, President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have blatantly and consistently refused to do their constitutional duty to take care that the immigration laws be faithfully executed, as required by Article II, endangering countless American and foreign lives in the process,’ Roy told Fox News on August 3, 2021.

Illinois conservative Rep. Mary Miller called for the president’s removal exactly one year after an ISIS-K suicide bomber killed nearly 200 people including 13 US service members outside of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul in the midst of the American military’s evacuation.

‘Joe Biden’s presidency consists of the biggest national security failure in the history of our country,’ Miller said in a public statement on Friday.

‘I’ve called for immediate oversight hearings on the mismanagement of the withdrawal from Afghanistan in addition to the impeachment of Biden and other top Pentagon officials.’

A recent CBS News poll suggests the GOP is still solidly expected to retake the House of Representatives in November – however, their projected lead has shrunk to just eight seats.

It’s not clear if House Republican leaders will entertain calls for impeachment, given concerns of distancing Independent and moderate voters ahead of the critical 2024 election cycle.

In taking a shot at Democrats’ two impeachments of Trump, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy pledged in April that Republicans would not impeach Biden for ‘political purposes’ – but did not totally rule out the move.

‘We’re going to uphold the law. At any time, if someone breaks the law and the ramification becomes impeachment, we would move towards that. But we’re not going to use it for political purposes,’ he told Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.

House GOP Whip Steve Scalise and Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik have similarly been silent on impeachment, though the latter called Biden ‘unfit’ for office following the deaths of the 13 US troops in Kabul.

DailyMail.com has reached out to McCarthy, Scalise and Stefanik’s offices for comment.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in September 2020 that he opposed impeaching the Democrat commander-in-chief.

‘Look, there isn’t going to be an impeachment, but I think we have a good chance of winning that election next year,’ he said following calls for the president’s ouster over the Afghanistan withdrawal.

At the time, he did not specify whether he’d change his mind with a GOP-dominated Congress in 2023.

A chemical found in black licorice could help fight one of the world’s deadliest cancers, a first-of-its-kind study suggests.

A study on mice found the flavonoid isoliquiritigenin (ISL), which is in licorice root, an herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, could kill pancreatic cancer cells.

Researchers in Hong Kong also found the compound could make treatments like chemotherapy more effective.

Study leader Dr Joshua Ko Ka-Shun said: ‘This compound is worth considering for further development into a new generation of chemotherapy treatment.’

‘[Pancreatic cancer] is difficult to identify, and usually at a late stage when it is detected, with not many treatment options available. Finding a suitable treatment is urgent.’

The National Cancer Institute estimates that just over 44 percent of pancreatic cancer patients survive more than five years if the condition is still localized to its original area. It has an average survival rate of 12 percent

When ISL was injected into tumors, the survival rate of those cancer cells dropped by 50 to 80 percent, depending on the dosage.

About 11 to 13 percent of cells entered late-stage apoptosis, or cell death, compared to less than five percent of cells that didn’t receive ISL.

‘ISL possesses a unique property of inhibiting pancreatic cancer progression through the blockade of autophagy, which is a natural process where the body’s cells clean out damaged or unnecessary components,’ Dr Ko said.

‘The blockade of late-stage autophagy in our experiments results in cancer cell death.’

The researchers also tested ISL’s effects on the chemotherapy drugs gemcitabine (GEM) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).

These drugs tend to have low success rates, as low as 10 percent, and many patients become resistant to them after a few months of treatment.

But the team found that adding ISL to GEM suppressed cancer cell growth by 18 percent, and adding it to 5-FU blocked growth by 30 percent.

Pancreatic cancer is the third deadliest form of the disease in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute, after lung and colorectal cancers.

On average, just 12.5 percent survive after five years.

The NCI estimates that more than half of these cases are diagnosed after the disease has already spread to other organs because the early symptoms, such as jaundice and abdominal pain, are easy to overlook.

When the cancer reaches later stages, the survival rate dwindles as low as three percent.

This has caused pancreatic cancer to be dubbed a ‘silent killer.’

Cases are on the rise as well. In the US, the disease incidence has increased by one percent every year since 2000, according to the American Cancer Society

Globally, cases have doubled since 1990, a 2019 study in The Lancet estimated.

The research is still early, and Dr Ko urged the public not to consume large amounts of licorice to prevent cancer.

However, the team is optimistic that ISL could be used in treatments within the next several years.

‘The findings in this study open a new avenue for developing ISL as a novel autophagy inhibitor in the treatment of pancreatic cancer,’ Dr Ko said.

‘We hope to collaborate with other research partners to further evaluate the effectiveness and potential clinical application of ISL in treating pancreatic cancer.’

cancer survivor has revealed the warning signs of ‘silent killer’ sepsis after a near-death experience.

Lauren Wagner, 26, from Canada, went into sepsis, an extreme and deadly reaction to an infection, as a complication of several surgeries to remove a cancerous tumor from her spine.

She took to TikTok in July to share the warning signs of the ‘life-threatening emergency.’

‘This information is so important, and it might save your life or somebody else’s one day,’ she said.

Ms Wagner thought she had a bad case of the flu and was the ‘most sick’ she had ever felt. At first, she ignored the symptoms in hopes they would improve over time, but she continued getting worse.

‘I didn’t know it at the time, but I was actually dealing with sepsis,’ she said.

‘I wish I had seen a video like I’m making right now because I would have gone to the ER a heck of a lot earlier, and that would have been very beneficial to me.’

Sepsis is a medical emergency that health experts have called a ‘silent killer.’ It’s caused by the body’s extreme reaction to an infection. This happens when the infection triggers a chain reaction throughout the body, leading to tissues and organs shutting down.

Symptoms can closely resemble the flu, so look out for a very high or low temperature, sweating, extreme pain, clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, high heart rate, slurred speech, and confusion.

Sepsis can also progress to septic shock, characterized by a severe drop in blood pressure. Signs of septic shock, according to the Mayo Clinic, include not being able to stand up, strong sleepiness or hard time staying awake, and a major change in mental status.

If left untreated, sepsis is fatal.

‘That is why it is so important to seek out treatment early and not wait and just hope for things to get better like I did because the longer you wait, the scarier things get,’ Ms Wagner said.

Sepsis impacts 1.7 million Americans every year, according to the CDC, and kills 350,000 annually.

In the UK, there are about 245,000 cases every year with 48,000 deaths.

About one in three patients who die in a hospital had sepsis during that time.

Infections that lead to sepsis most commonly start in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract.

Certain groups are more susceptible to sepsis, including adults aged 65 and older, children under one year, patients with weakened immune systems, and those who have had sepsis in the past. However, anyone can get it.

Ms Wagner said about her own experience: ‘The number one symptom that I personally had that led me to go to the ER was just how sick I was feeling. I was feeling the most sick I’ve ever felt.’

‘Every day it was getting worse. It was very scary.’

She now hopes to raise awareness about getting help as early as possible.

‘I truly believe sepsis is not spoken about enough. It is not taught in schools, and it is so important that we have this information in our back pockets,’ she said.

‘Any infection in anyone can lead to sepsis at any time.’

‘It is so important that we know what it is and the warning signs to look out for so we can go to the ER sooner and get treated and have a better outcome.’

‘I hope this helps just even one person out there.’

USA women spark controversy AGAIN as six players stay SILENT during national anthem before their last 16 World Cup exit against Sweden

  • Members of USWNT chose not to sing the national anthem before Sweden loss
  • But several members of the team did sing along prior to their round of 16 fixture
  • Players’ decisions to remain silent in previous games had attracted controversy

Members of the United States Women’s Soccer Team have again remained silent while the national anthem was played prior to their dramatic World Cup defeat to Sweden.

While five members of the team sung along as the anthem played prior to the round of 16 tie at the AAMI Park, six, including Naomi Girma and Crystal Dunn, elected not to.

In previous Women’s World Cup group ties against Vietnam, The Netherlands and Portugal, the majority of Vlatko Andonovski’s side have not sung along to the national anthem.

Prior to their goalless draw with Portugal, the majority of the side stood motionless as the anthem played out, with only captain Lindsey Horan, Alex Morgan, Alyssa Naeher and Julie Ertz putting their hands on their hearts.

The decision led to criticism from American media personality Megyn Kelly, who blamed Megan Rapinoe for the decision, despite the 38-year-old not being included in the starting XI for the clash.

‘Megan Rapinoe, she’s the leader of all this… She’s not a starter. So that’s why she’s not on camera when they’re doing the national anthem, but she’s behind a lot of this,’ Kelly said while hosting the Megyn Kelly Show.

‘She’s poisoned the entire team against the country for which they play. I don’t know about you, but I’m not rooting for them. I’m not with them. I hope they lose…It’s shameful. These girls are shameful. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.’

Ballon d’Or Féminin winner Rapinoe has long been known for her political advocacy, having campaigned for LGBTQ+ rights and supported Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the anthem to protest against racial injustice in the US.

Rapinoe, now playing in her final World Cup, said in 2019 that she would ‘never put my hand over my heart’ and ‘never sing the national anthem again.’

The USWNT entered the clash with Sweden looking to rebound from a disappointing group stage performance from the four-time World Cup winners.

Victory over Vietnam in their tournament opener was followed by back-to-back draws with the Netherlands and Portugal, allowing them to narrowly progress to the knockout stages.

Despite dominating Sweden, the USA were unable to find an opening goal as the game continued beyond the 90 minutes and ultimately headed to penalties goalless.

Then, after a nail biting shootout that saw extra-time substitute Rapinoe unable to convert her penalty, Sweden triumphed to hand the defending champions the earliest World Cup exit in their history.

Warning to Android users over glitch which sees their phone accidentally ‘silent call’ 999

  • UK police forces have received more than 1,000 silent calls over the last month
  • Police chiefs claim a new SOS Android feature is the cause of accidental calls
  • Google is aware of the issue and it will be addressed shortly, reports say

Police chiefs have warned that an Android feature is triggering a wave of accidental 999 calls.

Control rooms have reported a surge in ‘silent calls’ since a new SOS emergency function was rolled out on Android.

It allows users to call 999 by pressing the power button five times or more.

But authorities claim the feature means that many users are unknowingly pocket-dialling, overwhelming call operators with no response on the line.

‘Nationally, all emergency services are currently experiencing record high 999 call volumes,’ the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) said.

Police chiefs claim an SOS Android feature is the cause of accidental silent calls

Police chiefs claim an SOS Android feature is the cause of accidental silent calls

‘There’s a few reasons for this but one we think is having a significant impact is an update to Android smartphones.

‘These “silent calls” as they are named, are directed to police control rooms and the result has been a significant increase in silent calls.’

Police Scotland, Devon & Cornwall Police and the Metropolitan Police are among numerous forces which have reported an influx in these calls.

Last Sunday, just under 170 silent calls were made to the Devon and Cornwall force alone – with the rate soaring by 25 per cent over the past month.

Meanwhile, call-handlers at Northamptonshire Police also received more than 1,000 of these calls last month, ITVX reported.

But this issue goes beyond the UK, as the  European Emergency Number Association (EENA) raised the alarm just a few weeks ago.

Executive Director, Gary Machado, wrote: ‘Both Google and Samsung are aware of the matter and are releasing updates which are being rolled out now or very soon and until the end of June.

‘EENA hopes to see a decrease in the number of automatic false calls shortly and strongly encourages our members to share their own experiences on the matter.’

HOW TO SWITCH OFF ANDROID’S SOS FEATURE

  1. Head to ‘Settings’ on an Android phone
  2. Tap ‘Safety and Emergency’
  3. Switch off the ‘Emergency SOS’ feature

If you continue to experience this issue, Google suggests that Android owners can switch off the SOS setting.

To do so, users can head to their ‘Settings’ menu before tapping on ‘Safety and Emergency’.

Here, an ‘Emergency SOS’ feature should be visible, which can be switched off using the slide tool.

However, the tech giant assured MailOnline the issue would be resolved shortly.

Keeping Android users safe and public safety infrastructure available are top priorities,’ a Google spokesman said.

‘Android supports Emergency SOS because it can help users contact 911 more quickly in emergency situations.

‘To help these manufacturers prevent unintentional emergency calls on their devices, Android is providing them with additional guidance and resources.

‘We anticipate device manufacturers will roll out updates to their users that address this issue shortly. Users that continue to experience this issue should contact their device’s manufacturer.’

Even still, anyone who accidentally calls 999 is urged to speak to police anyway to make it clear they are not in trouble.

The NPCC continued: ‘Calls to 999 where the operator cannot hear anyone on the line (silent calls) are never just ignored. Call handlers will then need to spend valuable time trying to call you back to check whether you need help.

‘If you do accidentally dial 999, please don’t hang up. If possible, please stay on the line and let the operator know it was an accident and that you don’t need any assistance.’

The unsuspecting screen-recorder even makes use of a phone’s microphone every 15 minutes, taking a snippet of audio for unknown purposes.

This malware, discovered by ESET, did not come as part of the app when it launched in 2021.

Instead, attackers took a more unusual approach, with harmful features cropping up nearly a year later, in what may have been disguised as a typical update.

Who are the silent heroes of gardening? CLUE: They’re not men. In her book, ALICE VINCENT argues that women’s contribution to the craft is still undervalued

WHY WOMEN GROW

by Alice Vincent (Canongate £16.99, 304pp)

Is there any pastime which cuts across gender barriers in the way that gardening does? Go to a nursery or garden centre this weekend and I bet you’ll see a pretty even split of men and women browsing through plants or eyeing up shiny tools.

As the historian Catherine Horwood wrote in her 2010 book Gardening Women: ‘For centuries gardens have been important to women, and women have been important to gardens’, even though almost all women gardeners were denied any share of the limelight until the arrival, in the mid-19th century, of the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.

Nowadays, many of Britain’s most influential gardeners — Carol Klein, Rachel de Thame, Anna Pavord, Sarah Raven and even the Princess of Wales — are women.

In Why Women Grow, journalist Alice Vincent argues that women’s contribution to gardening is still being undervalued. ‘We have silently made the world more beautiful, too often without acknowledgement’, she declares, pointing out that ‘the majority of RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens are still designed by men, who take home more of the medals; there has never been a female lead presenter of Gardeners’ World’.

Vincent’s previous book, Rootbound, told of her joyful discovery of gardening in her 20s and how tending a tiny urban balcony helped her get over a painful relationship break-up.

Female persuasion: Picking flowers in the garden. Journalist Alice Vincent explores the role women have played in art of gardening

Female persuasion: Picking flowers in the garden. Journalist Alice Vincent explores the role women have played in art of gardening

At the beginning of this book she has a supportive new partner and has moved into a new property — with a garden! — yet she is still anxious and dissatisfied. To cheer herself up she embarks on a project to interview other women about what gardening means to them. She posts a message online with the simple question: ‘What drew you to gardening?’ By the next day, she has received 500 answers.

For the next few months, Vincent travels around the country interviewing a selection of women about their experiences. Some of the replies from new mothers tell her that gardening gives them a reason to be outside with their children, while others see the garden as a precious opportunity to get some time away from their offspring.

One new mum finds the garden an escape from the loneliness she feels indoors. Several of her interviewees use gardening as a way of coping with stress and anxiety.

One of them takes up gardening while in the grip of severe agoraphobia, brought on by being caught up in a terrorist incident in Paris. Her bramble-infested garden, now a jumble of roses, clematis and honeysuckle, was the only outdoor space she could bear to be in.

Soon ‘curiosity encouraged her to explore the local neighbourhood, see what was growing there that might work in her own depleted soil’.

Another woman, a victim of a sexual assault, says ‘the ground gave her something to hold, to indulge in and escape to’.

One of the best chapters in the book sees Vincent returning to the house where she grew up, driven by a longing to see her childhood garden again. The house’s new owner invites her to wander around and she has a Proustian moment: ‘I can taste the listlessness and longing of my adolescence.’

She had always believed her father was the gardener in the family but standing in the garden she has a revelation. All the things she loved best about it — the sweet peas, the Welsh poppies, the coldframe — were her mother’s doing.

‘I see her artistry, her cleverness, in the hard landscaping that still stands,’ she writes.

Alice Vincent writes lyrically about gardens and she makes some valid points about the pivotal role gardening plays in many women’s lives, but Why Women Grow is let down by her tendency towards navel-gazing. The simple joy of gardening gets lost in the mix.

Still, any gardener — woman or man — will surely agree with her when she asserts: ‘To green a space is to occupy it. To spring life from dirty grey concrete is to stage a takeover. To garden is to cultivate a superpower.’

Donald Trump has slammed Texas Governor Greg Abbott for failing to get behind his Attorney General Ken Paxton - who was impeached this weekend over misconduct allegations. Trump, who is a longtime ally of the state's top lawyer, described Paxton on Saturday as as 'one of the most hard working and effective Attorney Generals in the United States.' That came hours before the Republican-led House of Representatives voted to impeach Paxton on 20 counts that included bribery and abuse of public trust. But Abbott, who is now empowered to appoint an interim attorney general, has remained silent on the impeachment throughout the week and weekend, causing Trump to take aim at him personally.

Trump, who is a longtime ally of the state’s top lawyer, described Paxton on Saturday as as ‘one of the most hard working and effective Attorney Generals in the United States.’ That came hours before the Republican-led House of Representatives voted to impeach Paxton on 20 counts that included bribery and abuse of public trust. But Abbott, who is now empowered to appoint an interim attorney general, has remained silent on the impeachment throughout the week and weekend, causing Trump to take aim at him personally.

'MISSING IN ACTION! Where is the Governor of Texas on his Attorney General's Impeachment?' he wrote in a Truth Social post on Saturday evening.

Earlier in the day before the debate in the House began, Trump voiced his own support of Paxton, and called the Texas House speaker facilitating the impeachment a 'Republican in name only.' 'The RINO Speaker of the House of Texas, Dade Phelan, who is barely a Republican at all and failed the test on voter integrity, wants to impeach one of the most hard working and effective Attorney Generals in the United States, Ken Paxton, who just won re-election with a large number of American Patriots strongly voting for him,' he wrote. 'You would think that any issue would have been fully adjudicated by the voters of Texas, especially when that vote was so conclusive….' he added. Pictured: Trump walks with Texas Lt. Gov. Paxton has been under criminal indictment since 2015 over conduct from before he took office but was reelected in both 2018 and 2022. In 2014, he admitted that he breached Texas laws by failing to register as an 'investment advisor' while soliciting clients. A year later, he was indicted on felony charges by a grand jury in his hometown near Dallas following accusations he defrauded investors in a tech startup. He has since pleaded not guilty to two felony counts that carry a potential sentence of up to 99 years in prison. The move to impeach Paxton on Saturday made him the third sitting official in Texas' nearly 200-year history to have been impeached. Paxton has decried what he called 'political theater' based on 'hearsay and gossip, parroting long-disproven claims,' and said it's an attempt to disenfranchise voters who reelected him in November.

Trump echoed that sentiment. 'Hopefully Republicans in the Texas House will agree that this is a very unfair process that should not be allowed to happen or proceed - I will fight you if it does,' he wrote in another post. On Friday, his son, Donald Trump Jr., called the impeachment proceedings a 'disgrace.' Hours after his impeachment Paxton took to Twitter himself. 'The ugly spectacle in the Texas House today confirmed the outrageous impeachment plot against me was never meant to be fair or just,' he began a statement. 'I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just,' he wrote. Read the full story: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12134195/Trump-slams-Texas-Governor-Greg-Abbott-failing-state-Attorney-General-Ken-Paxton.html?ito=msngallery
