A freak incident in the team hotel has ruled Scotland hooker Dave Cherry out of his first Rugby World Cup.

Cherry suffered a concussion on Monday – a team day off – when he slipped on some stairs while walking back to the team hotel and injured his head, Scotland said on Thursday.

Mail Sport’s sources say the hooker had had a few drinks at a family BBQ during the team’s day off but was not drunk. They added that he was taken to hospital and held overnight as a precaution.

Cherry will stay with the team until he is ready to go home. The 32-year-old Cherry played the last 25 minutes of the Scots’ opening pool match, the 18-3 loss to South Africa on Sunday, as a replacement.

In a statement, Scottish Rugby said a decision was taken to “end his tournament involvement on medical grounds” because Cherry would miss the next 12 days to follow return-to-play protocols.

Cherry would have missed only Scotland’s second pool match, against Tonga on September 24, and would likely have returned in time for Romania on September 30 and Ireland on October 7.

“I’m hugely disappointed to be leaving the squad with concussion,” Cherry said. “I’ve loved my time in camp over the summer and gaining my first World Cup cap on Sunday against South Africa.

“I want to wish the team all the best for the remainder of the competition.”

Stuart McInally, who captained Scotland at the 2019 World Cup, has replaced Cherry in the 33-man squad.

McInally was already on standby having flown to France last week after a concussion sustained by another hooker, Ewan Ashman.

Ashman is continuing his return-to-play protocols and is on track to be available for selection next week.

McInally announced recently he will retire after the World Cup to pursue a new career as an airline pilot.

Hosts yet to mount an attack (0-0)

The home side are being denied much of the ball and the plan from Steve Clarke looks to be play on the counter-attack. England will have to make a mistake for Scotland to get a chance and so far they look comfortable.

Consecutive corners for England (0-0)

Scotland are being forced to defend deep as England win corners in quick succession. Guehi goes down in the box but there wasn’t much in it and play continues.

England dominating early possession (0-0)

England look to have settled quickly and are playing with confidence as they control possession in the early exchanges. Scotland reverting to a back-five when England have the ball.

England’s first corner comes to nothing (0-0)

Man City right-back Kyle Walker wins the first corner of the match and it’s played deep into Declan Rice. The Arsenal midfielder looks to clip a return cross to the back-post but Gunn comes off his line to punch clear.

Kane looking to run in behind Scotland defence (0-0)

The England skipper was found dropping deep against Ukraine last time out but is trying to make a couple of early runs in behind here. Something for Scotland’s defence to be wary of.

KICK-OFF: Underway at Hampden Park (0-0)

The hosts get the ball rolling and we are underway. Raw emotion on show and this is going to be a cracker.

Boo’s greet England national anthem

England’s national anthem is played first and plenty of boo’s echo around Hampden Park to the point that you can barely hear ‘God save the King’ being played as a host of Scottish supporters make their feelings heard.

Traveling England fans try to do the same when the Scotland national anthem plays but are drowned out.

Kick-off is FIVE minutes away

We are just five minutes from getting underway inside Hampden Park as the players return to their dressing rooms. There is going to be an almighty roar from both sets of supporters in a moment. Strap in and stick with us throughout the match.

Southgate relishing Scotland ‘hostility’

The England manager has been speaking pre-match on Channel 4 and has admitted tonight will be a ‘hostile’ test for the Three Lions.

Southgate stated: ‘There’s so much histroy to the game and a great test for us in a really hostile environment. Scotland are playing well and it’s a really good challenge.

‘We are trying to find the balance of stability, expeirence and we have to do that in the course of the next few months but also some freshness in the team so a lot of different objectives.’

Picture Special: A look back through the history of this rivalry

On the 150th anniversary of the oldest rivalry in world football, we have delved into the Daily Mail archives to bring you these classic images of Scotland versus England at Hampden Park.

Take a look for yourself below ahead of kick-off.

Is this Scotland’s best chance to beat England?

Scotland haven’t beaten England in this tie since before the turn of the Millenium, but tonight is probably their best chance since then.

The hosts have plenty of Premier League firepower in their ranks and are one of Europe’s most in-form nations after winning their opening five European Championship qualifying matches.

Their midfield boasts a plethora of talent in McTominay, McGinn and Gilmour and although it perhaps isn’t at the same level as England’s midfield, they have shown they are more than capable of scoring.

Southgate’s decision to play with a double midfield pivot with Rice and Phillips shows England are wary of the danger and Jude Bellingham will be the man responsible for adding creativity from deep.

Scotland can qualify for the Euros tonight

The hosts will have most of their attention focused on England tonight but will also have one eye on events unfolding on the other side of the North Sea.

Norway are taking on Georgia in a Group A European Championship quaifying match and a draw will see Scotland become the first team to qualify for next year’s competition in Germany.

We’ll keep you updated on how things are progressing in that game.

England emerge to boos at Hampden Park

England players are first out for their warm-ups and have emerged to raucous boos inside Hampden Park. The seats are already filling out and we are 40 minutes away from kick-off.

There is going to be a cracking atmosphere inside the stadium as two fierce rivals lock horns once again and England will need to silence this crowd early or it could be a long evening.

A closer look at England’s anniversary shirt

Tonight celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between sport’s oldest rivals and to honour the moment both teams are wearing iconic celebration shirts to mark the occasion.

England’s no-thrills design features a plain white old style top with the iconic Three Lions having a crown placed on top of the badge and the date 1872 inscribed beneath.

Gianni Infantino in attendance for tonight’s game

It might only be a friendly, but FIFA president Gianni Infantino is in town and soaking up the atmosphere at Hampden Park. The FIFA head spared the expensive luxuries as he jetted into Glasgow on an easyJet flight for tonight’s match.

SCOTLAND TEAM NEWS

Steve Clarke has named an unchanged team from the side that eased past Cyprus in a 3-0 victory last time out.

Scotland supporters will be looking to Manchester United’s Scott McTominay to continue his terrific goalscoring run that see’s him joint lead the European Championship qualifying goalscoring charts with six strikes so far.

England will also have to be wary of the threats posed from midfield by Billy Gilmour and John McGinn.

STARTING XI: Gunn, Hickey, Robertson, McTominay, Tierney, McGinn, McGregor, Adams, Hendry, Gilmour, Porteous

ENGLAND TEAM NEWS

England manager Gareth Southgate has named a strong line-up to take on Scotland, but it perhaps isn’t the strongest he could have named.

There are rare starts for Lewis Dunk and Kalvin Phillips, while Phil Foden is also pulled back into the fray. Declan Rice will partner Phillips in a midfield pivot that shows Southgate is wary of Scotland’s attack.

Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire both drop to the bench while Bukayo Saka joins them amongst the subs as well.

STARTING XI: Ramsdale, Walker, Guehi, Dunk, Trippier, Rice, Phillips, Foden, Bellingham, Rashford, Kane.

Good evening and thanks for joining us

Good evening and thanks for joining us for the 150th meeting of football’s oldest rivals. Tonight may be classed as a friendly but this will be anything but that as the two sides clash at Hampden Park in front of a baying crowd. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

A TikToker who left behind her life in Las Vegas to live in Scotland has revealed the biggest culture shocks that came with the move.

Lua Rodriguez Murphy met her now-husband, a Scot, while he was holidaying at the hotel she worked at in Las Vegas. After they got engaged, they decided to move in together in Glasgow where they now live with their three children.

Lua, originally from California, makes candid videos about adjusting to life in Scotland as an American, and she’s starting to build up a significant fanbase, with nearly 30,000 followers to date.

Speaking to MailOnline Travel, the 33-year-old lists out the things that surprised her the most about life in Scotland – with free healthcare from the NHS at the top of the list.

She says: ‘I remember going to the doctor for the first time here and I asked my doctor how much the cost would be. She looked at me like I had two heads and said it was free! I couldn’t wrap my head around that so when I walked out, I stopped by reception to reconfirm and she said I didn’t owe anything because my care was covered by the NHS.’

Now Lua even has a job working for the NHS, which she loves. The mum-of-one says: ‘I love working in the NHS because I like working in a country that truly believes that a nation owes its citizens the right to healthcare regardless of ability to pay and without having different levels of healthcare available based on someone’s status or economic standing.’

But free healthcare wasn’t the only aspect of Scottish life that took some adjusting to – Lua found some surprises in the way British homes are designed.

One thing she found strange was the ‘light switches outside the bathroom’. She explains: ‘I remember arriving at my husband’s flat for the first time and feeling around the wall in the bathroom in complete darkness trying to find the light switch. It wasn’t until after a solid five minutes he told me it was outside the door.’

Another, she reveals, is ‘windows not having window screens to protect the bugs from flying in’.

There’s a contrast between Scottish and American diets, too, she reveals.

Lua reflects: ‘Scottish food is, in general, a lot less processed and treated than American food. The portion sizes are also more suitable to a single person’s needs.

Lua says that enjoying access to free healthcare was the biggest culture shock when she moved to Scotland. Now, she works for the NHS

‘Also, the [UK-wide] sugar tax was surprising. I had never heard of it before! I think it’s beneficial though because it helps reduce obesity.’

She has well and truly warmed to Scottish cuisine, she reveals. Lua says she ‘can’t live without’ tea cakes now and Irn Bru is ‘forever stocked’ in her home now.

Shopping for food was another culture shock, she reveals.

In one video, she says: ‘I remember the first time I went to the grocery store by myself and the cashier [handed] me my receipt and went: “That’s you, pal”. I was like, “What? That’s me what?”‘ I didn’t know that that meant that was the end of the transaction.’

She continues: ‘Another thing that I’d never seen before I first moved here… the cashiers at probably every grocery store that I’ve been to, they sit down when they’re putting through your groceries. I’ve never seen that before. I remember the first time me and my husband went to Sainsbury’s I was like, “The cashier is sitting down”. And he’s like: “Yeah, do you expect them to stand for like nine hours, are you kidding me?”‘

The NHS worker adds: ‘On top of that, they don’t even bag your stuff. Americans would have a heart attack if nobody bagged their groceries. Here they toss your stuff at you and you literally have to bag it and that’s how it is. That was wild to me, I never had seen that before.’

The worst thing about life in Scotland, she notes, is driving around roundabouts. She says: ‘Not kidding, I had never experienced a roundabout in my life prior to moving here. Much of my fear of roundabouts is from my lack of familiarity and experience with them. They just seem so chaotic to me!’

On the other hand, the best about Scottish living, she says is ‘hands down, the people’. She explains: ‘Everyone is so chatty, and welcoming and easy to talk to. And so, so funny! Scottish humour truly is something else.’

She feels that when it comes to education, the Scots do it better. Lua says: ‘Education. Scotland is a nation where a first-class, world-leading education is accessible to all. I’m grateful that my children will be able to go to college for free! Student debt is so hard to pay off in the U.S and it really discourages people from pursuing a career because it’s so expensive and the interest in loans are so high.’

But she finds that Americans take the lead when it comes to customer service. She says: ‘I think Americans… go above and beyond when it comes to keeping a customer happy. I also feel Americans are so enthusiastic and great at entertaining. Basketball games, baseball games, pep rallies and entertainment are all so much better back home. They love getting the crowd involved, handing out prizes, doing dance cams, cheerleading and more!

‘Even at the university level, college stadiums are filled to the brim with people watching young athletes play! Which I don’t think is very common here.’

What are the main differences between Scots and Americans? Lua says: ‘I think enthusiasm. Americans get so excited and giddy over the smallest of things! I feel Scottish people are sometimes a bit more reserved. Overall though, I think we’re all more alike than different.’

All in all, she’s thrilled with her life in Scotland, she reveals, saying: ‘I initially didn’t think I’d move to Scotland, but after a lot of thinking I decided to make the move and leave my budding career behind. It was definitely a sacrifice but I love my life here and I’m so happy!’
