Incredible moment crocodiles HELP stray dog in their river by nudging it to safety with their noses instead of eating it

  • Stray dog ran into crocodile infested river after being chased by pack of dogs

A stray dog that was quickly surrounded by three crocodiles as soon as it ran into their river may have thought that it wouldn’t survive another minute.

But in an astonishing turn of events, two of the crocodiles decided to nudge the young stray, which had jumped into the river to escape a pack of feral dogs, to safety with their snouts.

Experts say that instead of devouring the stray dog, the marsh crocodiles ‘guided’ it away from where the barking pack of dogs were waiting for it on the river bank in the state of Maharashtra, western India

‘These crocodiles were actually touching the dog with their snout and nudging it to move further for a safe ascent on the bank and eventually escape,’ the scientists wrote in a report published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa.

‘Given that the crocodile was well within the striking range and could have easily devoured the dog, yet none of them attacked and instead chose to nudge it towards the bank, implies that the hunger drive was absent.’

The scientists are still unsure as to why the marsh crocodiles, which can weigh up to 1,000 pounds, didn’t see it as an opportunity to eat the dog.

But they say that marsh crocodiles, known as muggers, are not always aggressive and that their emotional intelligence could have been on display in this case.

‘Emotional empathy’, which allows a species ‘to experience feelings for another’, has not been investigated in the muggers, the scientists said.

‘The curious case of a dog “rescued” by the group of crocodiles reported her seems more on lines of empathy than altruistic behaviour,’ they said.

The scientists added: ‘Reptiles have been underestimated as far as animal cognition is concerned.’

Marsh crocodiles are most commonly found in India and adult males can reach up to 18ft in length and weight up to 1,000 pounds.

The researchers also detailed how they made the ‘curious’ discovery that marsh crocodiles also adore marigolds. They said the muggers were often found floating and banking in the yellow flowers along Savitri river.

They believed that this could be due to the properties of the flower, which would help protect the crocodiles from fungi and bacteria.

‘This behaviour is novel and intriguing,’ the researchers said while adding the behaviour needed further investigation.’

And these photographs prove you should always check references before hiring a professional workmen.

Sea pools give you the thrill of sea swimming minus the dangers of the open water – and they’re often a sight to behold, a beautifully illustrated book has revealed.

Showcasing 66 ‘saltwater sanctuaries’ around the world, Sea Pools by Chris Romer-Lee is described by publisher Batsford Books as ‘a celebration of sea-swimming’.

With each turn of the page comes a wave of anecdotes and facts about sea pools that are dotted along coastlines everywhere from Cornwall to Australia. On top of that, the tome is swimming in breathtaking photography.

‘Whether they are hewn from rock or cast onto a natural rock shelf these pools always solve a problem: providing safe access to water,’ Romer-Lee writes in his tome.

He adds that there’s an ‘unfettered joy to be found in entering sheltered tidal waters cradled by a concrete or rock enclosure, protected from the turbulent sea beyond the walls and yet still being nourished by rich saltwater and marine life’.

Scroll down to dive into a selection of these spellbinding sea pools for yourself…

PISCINE D¿EAU DE MER DE SAINT-QUAY PORTRIEUX, BRITTANY, FRANCE: 'This pear-shaped pool has sweeping curves accented with an exquisitely designed, cantilevered concrete diving platform.' So says author Romer-Lee, adding: 'Access to the pool is from a grand staircase that plunges to the pool edge'

LEWINNICK COVE HOUSE POOL, LEWINNICK COVE, CORNWALL: This pool, hewn from rock and 'lined with white-glazed bricks and turquoise mosaic tiles, probably imported from Italy', offers 'expansive views across the emerald waters of Fistral Bay', according to the tome. Accessed via a 'short flight of weathered concrete steps', the private sea pool can only be used by residents of the building nearby. Now converted into apartments, the building, the book explains, was built in 1910 by wealthy lawyer and financier Frederick Baker who envisaged a 'Romanesque villa and gardens similar to a property he'd seen in Italy'

EMERALD GATE POOL, DINARD, FRANCE: 'Brittany has some of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, making it perfect tidal-pool territory,' writes Romer-Lee. Of the region's Emerald Gate Pool, he says: 'Nestled into a former natural cove on the side of the beach, this gem has a commanding view over the sands below.' The book notes that 'sweeping' granite staircases lead from Dinard's promenade to the pool terrace. Unveiled to the public in 1927, the pool was commissioned by the local council with a simple brief to 'allow sea bathing at any time and the organisation of water sports events'

BELMULLET TIDAL POOL, COUNTY MAYO, IRELAND: 'Belmullet Tidal Pool looks like a 1970s utopian vision that should have stayed on the architect¿s drawing board. Thank God it didn¿t,' Romer-Lee writes. It's the vision of a female swimmer who was inspired by a tidal pool she saw on a trip to Sweden, the book reveals, adding that the pool - described as a 'large cuboid mass' - opened to the public with 'huge success' in 1984

He explains that while many Victorians could not swim, they believed in 'the natural curing properties of the saltwater' and that these 'finely carved and accessible baths are perfectly formed for nervous bathers wary of the tides and currents but eager to benefit from the water'

The former sheriff’s deputy who fled to safety during the Parkland school massacre broke down in court today when a jury found him not guilty.

Former Broward County Deputy Scot Peterson wept as the verdicts were read. The jury had deliberated for 19 hours over four days, acquitting Peterson of all 11 charges which included neglect, negligence, and perjury.

After court adjourned, Peterson, his family and friends rushed into a group hug as they whooped, hollered and cried.

One of his supporters chased after lead prosecutor Chris Killoran and said something. Killoran turned and snapped at him, ‘Way to be a good winner’ and slapped him on the shoulder. Members of the prosecution team then nudged Killoran out of the courtroom.

The campus deputy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Peterson had been charged with failing to confront shooter Nikolas Cruz during his six-minute attack inside a three-story 1200 classroom building on Feb. 14, 2018, that left 17 dead.

The acquittal concludes the first trial in U.S. history of a law enforcement officer for conduct during an on-campus shooting.

He could have received nearly 100 years in prison, although a sentence even approaching that length would have been highly unlikely given the circumstances and his clean record. He also could have lost his $104,000 annual pension.

Prosecutors, during their two-week presentation, called to the witness stand students, teachers and law enforcement officers who testified about the horror they experienced and how they knew where Cruz was.

Some said they knew for certain that the shots were coming from the 1200 building. Prosecutors also called a training supervisor who testified Peterson did not follow protocols for confronting an active shooter.

Peterson’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, during his two-day presentation, called several deputies who arrived during the shooting and students and teachers who testified they did not think the shots were coming from the 1200 building.

Peterson, who did not testify, has said that because of echoes, he could not pinpoint the shooters location.

Eiglarsh also emphasized the failure of the sheriff’s radio system during the attack, which limited what Peterson heard from arriving deputies.

Security videos show that 36 seconds after Cruz’s attack began, Peterson exited his office about 100 yards from the 1200 building and jumped into a cart with two unarmed civilian security guards. They arrived at the building a minute later.

Peterson got out of the cart near the east doorway to the first-floor hallway. Cruz was at the hallway´s opposite end, firing his AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle.

Peterson, who was not wearing a bullet-resistant vest, didn´t open the door. Instead, he took cover 75 feet (23 meters) away in the alcove of a neighboring building, his gun still drawn. He stayed there for 40 minutes, long after the shooting ended and other police officers had stormed the building.

Peterson spent nearly three decades working at schools, including nine years at Stoneman Douglas. He retired shortly after the shooting and was then fired retroactively.

Cruz’s jury could not unanimously agree he deserved the death penalty. The 24-year-old former Stoneman Douglas student was then sentenced to life in prison .

Big brand and expensive sunscreens may not offer the protection against skin damage they profess to on the label, it is claimed.

The alarming findings come from safety experts at Which?, who found a number of cheaper supermarket alternatives offer strong protection.

The consumer champion said that one Avon product ‘did not come close’ to hitting its claimed SPF30 protection in tests.

Most suncreams carry an SPF – Sun Protection Factor – and a UVA rating which are measures of protection against the rays associated with skin damage and cancer.

People rely on the information to guide them on how long they can safely stay out in the sun during heatwaves.

Which? tested 19 popular suncreams, with one being identified as a 'don't buy' because it failed safety protection tests

Which? tested 19 popular suncreams, with one being identified as a ‘don’t buy’ because it failed safety protection tests.

It said Avon’s Refreshing 3-in-1 Face and Body Sun Lotion SPF30 (£5.75/150ml) ‘did not come close to hitting its claimed SPF30 in tests’.

Dermatologists say sunscreen should be free to protect all

Leading dermatologists who fear that deprived families could miss out on protection have said sunscreen should be made free.

Professor Mabs Chowdhury, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, told The Guardian it was ‘concerning’ that people might not be buying suncream as a result of increasing prices.

A survey by Melanoma Focus found that 50 per cent think sunblock is too expensive – and 10 per cent don’t use it because of the cost.

Julian Peace, deputy chair at the Primary Care Dermatology Society, said ideally the protective cream would be given out for free.

He added: ‘The highest piority would be organising a provision for children… There is a voucher scheme available for vitamin D supplements – under the ‘healthy start’ scheme – and this may be a system by which supplies of sunscreen could be allocated to those most in need.’

Which? said: ‘Consumers are advised to avoid this product. By not living up to its SPF claims, it does not offer adequate sun protection, meaning people using them could unwittingly put themselves at risk.

‘With parts of Britain in the grip of a heatwave, it is vital people protect themselves from harmful UVA and UVB rays that could lead to skin damage and cause skin cancer.’

The group said products with good protection do not have to break the bank.

For example, several of Asda’s products passed sun protection tests and earned a Which? Great Value badge for their low prices.

These included Asda Protect Moisturising Sun Lotion SPF30 at just £3 for 200ml. Testers said it was absorbed easily without being greasy or sticky and did not leave white marks on skin.

Among slightly more expensive spray products, testers found Asda’s Protect Refreshing Clear Sun Spray at £4 for 200ml was easy to apply, not tacky to touch and did not leave any visible residue. Most importantly, it gave the required SPF and UVA protection in lab tests.

The Asda products outshone premium Ultrasun Family SPF30, which was over seven times more expensive at £26 for 150ml. Both were highly effective against UV, however Ultrasun was not as easily absorbed.

Boots also fared well in the testing and earned a Which? Great Value badge for its low price. Its Soltan Protect & Moisturise Lotion (SPF30) at £4 for 200ml delivered all the protection required.

In the children’s category at products with an SPF of 50+, first place went to Asda’s Kids Sun Lotion Spray, at £3.60 for 200ml.

Another another great value option was Boots Soltan Kids Protect & Moisturise Lotion, at £4 for 200ml.

The Which? Head of Home Products and Services, Natalie Hitchens, said: ‘It is great to see cheaper sunscreen options available on the high street and in supermarkets at a time where consumers need affordable options.

‘However, it’s a concern to find a big brand product on the market that has failed our testing and did not offer the level of protection claimed on the packaging.

‘Our advice is to stick to a tried and tested suncream. Do not be fooled into thinking that paying a higher price will definitely mean a better or safer product as our testing proved a supermarket own brand product can do the job well.

‘We’ve found plenty of highly effective, cheap sunscreens available on the high street, so there’s no need to splash out to keep you and your loved ones safe in the sun.’

Avon said it stands behind its product, but promised an investigation. It said: ‘The safety of our customers is our priority and that’s why our expert skincare team produces the most effective sun care formulas.

‘Upon hearing from Which? Avon has engaged its quality and research and development teams to investigate the specific batch of product that Which? tested.

‘Avon stands behind its data and that of the independent labs which conduct our testing.’

It’s a job summary all pilots will be familiar with – that they’re just ‘bus drivers in the sky’.

But it’s one that Joji Waites, Head of Flight Safety at pilots’ union Balpa, argues is a myth.

Here he lays out the reasons why a pilot’s job ‘is far more than just flying the plane’.

PILOT NAVIGATOR

As sophisticated electronic flight management systems were developed, the navigator’s position was discontinued. Nowadays, every pilot needs to be able to get the aircraft from A to B. That means planning the route… checking the weather en-route, knowing which diversions are available and how to get to them. You must also be able to program and monitor the aircraft’s onboard navigation systems and have a working understanding of how to navigate should these fail.

It’s a job summary all pilots will be familiar with – that they’re just ‘bus drivers in the sky’. But it’s one that Joji Waites, Head of Flight Safety at pilots’ union Balpa, argues is a myth

It’s a job summary all pilots will be familiar with – that they’re just ‘bus drivers in the sky’. But it’s one that Joji Waites, Head of Flight Safety at pilots’ union Balpa, argues is a myth

PILOT ENGINEER

Like the role of a navigator, this job has also been incorporated into that of the pilot.

In modern airliners if a malfunction, abnormality or an emergency occurs, it is displayed on an electronic display panel and action must be taken to rectify the abnormal condition. However, despite the automation, pilots still need a comprehensive knowledge of aircraft systems to be able to deal with problems that may occur and on occasions to be able to ‘think outside the box’.

PILOT COMPUTER TECHNICIAN

Modern aviation is all about computers. Fewer people in the cockpit means more technology on board. But all this technology needs to be programmed and monitored and that’s where the human comes in. Pilots today must understand a variety of computer systems that help fly the plane, navigate and communicate. When flying through the autopilot you never want to hear the phrase ‘what’s it doing now?’ You need to be ahead of the aircraft and the automation at all times.

MET OFFICER

Do you know what haboobs are? Or how to identify a cumulonimbus cloud? Your pilot will. (FYI: Haboobs are violent and oppressive winds blowing in summer in Sudan and elsewhere, bringing sand from the desert. A cumulonimbus cloud is a dense towering vertical cloud associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability.)

Weather has a big impact on flights. Pilots need to know if they need to de-ice the aircraft before take-off, take extra fuel to allow for diversions around thunderstorms or if they can expect turbulence on a sector. Part of the extensive training involves understanding meteorology and it’s a skill pilots use all the time to keep flights safe.

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

'When flying through the autopilot you never want to hear the phrase “what’s it doing now?” says Balpa's Joji Waites. '[Pilots] need to be ahead of the aircraft and the automation at all times'

‘When flying through the autopilot you never want to hear the phrase ‘what’s it doing now?’ says Balpa’s Joji Waites. ‘[Pilots] need to be ahead of the aircraft and the automation at all times’

On a typical day, pilots deal with other aircrew, ground crew, cabin crew, air traffic control and passengers to name a few. A pilot must be able to communicate well, not only in aviation terms (for example using the radio to speak to ATC), but also on an interpersonal level.

For a start, pilots fly with so many different crews that they must be able to establish a rapport with other flight and cabin crew easily. They must be able to exchange information clearly with people they have never met before. A pilot also must communicate information to passengers. And that’s where the next part of the job spec comes in.

CUSTOMER SERVICES MANAGER

A pilot’s primary concern is always the safety of the flight. But pilots take pride in ensuring their passengers receive the best possible service. Explaining a technical problem that’s caused a delay, letting them know the weather at their destination or pointing out the opportunity to see a famous landmark as [they] fly past can all add to a passenger’s experience of a flight.

Pilots are much more than just plane drivers – they are skilled professionals who are part of a vital safety system that works to ensure passengers, crew and cargo arrive safely at their destinations

Joji Waites, Head of Flight Safety at pilots’ union Balpa

PROBLEM SOLVER

As well as being responsible for their passengers, a captain has the ultimate responsibility for all the crew on board. Understanding their needs, flight time limitations, rest requirements, industrial agreements and supporting them in their dealings with passengers is a vital part of the job. Pilots can be away from home for extended periods and on occasions, people need supporting on a personal level.

Not forgetting pilots can suddenly find themselves very close to terrorist attacks, military coups and natural disasters! Together with senior cabin crew members, this is another part of the role in the management and care of all the crew.

ADMIN OFFICER

The masses and masses of paper that pilots used to deal with is diminishing rapidly with the introduction of electronic flight bags and iPads. However, the same information and requirements are there – just more in an electronic form. Pilots must ensure they have all the correct and relevant flight documentation and that any reports required from the flight are written correctly and filed in a timely manner.

Overall, being a pilot is a job Balpa members find interesting and varied. The skilled pilot is part of an intricate safety system that mitigates risks and keeps passengers safe. Pilots are much more than just plane drivers – they are skilled professionals who are part of a vital safety system that works to ensure passengers, crew and cargo arrive safely at their destinations. As pressure increases from some parts of the industry for operations with a further reduction in crew numbers – maybe eventually leading to fully autonomous operations – the recognition of these skills and the safety added value of a multi-crew cockpit is more important than ever.

The above is an extract from a blog post Joji wrote for Balpa. Click here to read it. For more on Balpa visit www.balpa.org.

The 40-year-old longtime actress – who is the face of the brand’s Icon campaign -modeled a look stitched together with gold safety pins.

The Armageddon Time star teased her perky cleavage in the look, which was extremely low cut and boasted a thigh-high slit.

Anne turned heads in the ensemble, commanding attention as she rocked its fingerless opera gloves.

It also came with a jacket that she draped over her arms during some red carpet moments.

Anne’s look piggybacked off Liz Hurley’s iconic black safety pin Versace dress from 1994.

Anne’s getup was created with tweed and she described the look as a ‘marriage between Versace and Chanel.’

Speaking to Vogue on the red carpet, the mother-of-two said, ‘I just do what Donatella [Versace] tells me to do, very gratefully.

‘She sent me a sketch for this and I just went, “Well, alright.” I do have to say I work with an amazing team.

‘My stylist Erin Walsh, she always puts everything together so it’s really her that does the collaboration. I’m just a lucky girl.’

The version worn by Hurley to then-boyfriend Hugh Grant’s Four Weddings and a Funeral movie premiere was originally modeled by Helena Christensen in Versace’s Spring/Summer 1994 runway show.

Hathaway was decked out in Bulgari jewelry, including a decadent choker that complemented the gold and pearl hardware adorning the gown.

On her feet she donned a pair of satin, ivory, pointy-toe platform heels.

And she leaned into the role of vixen with her rich brunette hair styled in a voluminous half-up/half-down look.

Her makeup was soft and subtle, expertly applied using pink tones on her cheeks and pout.

The 2023 Met Gala returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday evening, with everyone from Kim Kardashian to Paris Hilton set to attend the annual fundraising event.

Since 1948 stars have ascended the majestic staircase into a very exclusive party where no selfies are allowed.

In keeping with tradition, the event will be held on the first Monday of May. It is scheduled to begin at 6:30PM EST on May 1, 2023.

Fans can watch the event unfold in real-time via a livestream on Vogue.

This year, the ball’s theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The late German designer was Chanel’s long-time creative director. He passed at age 85 in 2019.

His beloved cat, Choupette, has even been invited to the festivities.

The decision to honor Karl has sparked controversy given the many offensive remarks he has made over the years, from slamming the #MeToo movement to opposing same-sex marriage.

‘I’m against it for a very simple reason: In the 60s they all said we had the right to the difference. And now, suddenly, they want a bourgeois life,’ he told Vice of same-sex marriage.

‘It’s difficult to imagine—one of the papas at work and the other at home with the baby. How would that be for the baby? I don’t know. I see more lesbians married with babies than I see boys married with babies. And I also believe more in the relationship between mother and child than in that between father and child.’

While he ultimately showed his support for same-sex marriage at his spring 2013 Chanel haute couture show, he still said he was ‘less keen’ on same-sex couples adopting children, according to AP.

Along with the Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, who runs and hosts the annual event, the 2023 MET Gala will also be co-hosted by Penelope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel and also Roger Federer.

While the show may be known for its glitzy and over-the-top red carpet — with details of what occurs inside often remaining mysterious — at its heart, it is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
