Married At First Sight UK‘s latest season has been hit with accusations of fakery – sparking questions over the authenticity of the show. 

As with many previous seasons, questions have been asked about what goes on behind the scenes, with Channel 4 frequently being forced to weather claims of falsehood, most recently with the show’s first transgender star Ella Morgan. 

Channel 4 was embroiled in a fakery row after pretending that groom appearing on their reality show Married At First Sight UK was unaware he had been paired up with a transgender woman – before later revealing he had been told in advance.

As well as the tip off, some of the contestants have been spotted on other shows, including Laura Vaughan, who dated Gary Lucy on Celebs Go Dating last year. 

Laura was not the only star who has previously sought love on TV as it was revealed that groom Luke Worley, appeared on Davina McCall‘s short-lived The Language Of Love dating show two years ago.

On Monday, the show launched, during which viewers saw Ella, who was born male and transitioned into a woman when she was 18, wed Nathanial.

Channel 4 were forced to divulge that bosses had informed him in advance. 

In a statement, the network says: ‘This is the first time MAFS UK has featured a trans bride so, to ensure fully informed consent, and with the permission of the bride, the groom was told that the match found for him was a trans woman, after which both parties chose to continue in the process.

‘In all other ways, the integrity of the format was preserved. Our priority during matchmaking is to protect the wellbeing of the cast and create compatible matches, based on detailed assessment of individual preferences, as part of an in-depth, careful matchmaking process.’

Addressing claims on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp last week, the dating professionals Mel Schilling and Paul C Brunson insisted ‘this is not a gotcha moment’ and explained that they did have the groom’s consent beforehand.

Following the episode, a viewer wrote: ‘If that wasn’t proof of how staged #MAFSUK is . Paul literally said ‘with Ella’s permission, Nathanial has been informed his wife is trans’. But they did this big reveal with Ella really nervous???? Make it make sense.

They added that Ella was an ‘incredible role model’ and ‘having visibility of a trans woman’ was important on the show.

Aside from Ella’s situation, further questions sprung from other appearances.

One Twitter user shared the clip and penned a message reading: ‘People that have been on previous dating shows doing MAFS are just fake hungry, move aside and let real people go on #MAFSUK’.

Luke’s previous reality appearance saw Luke move to Spain with both British and Spanish singletons to find ‘the one’, with the show presenting a huge twist in that contestants won’t be able to speak the same language as each other.

Viewers swiftly noted the repeat appearance, as a Twitter users penned: ‘I remember Luke from that other dating show called Language Of Love #MAFSUK…

The latest questions come after Nathanial and Ella’s relationship hit the rocks in Wednesday’s episode, after he dropped a bombshell during a furious row. 

While the pair’s romance had started well at their wedding, with Nathanial openly accepting his wife was transgender, things turned sour in Wednesday’s episode mere hours after arriving for their honeymoon in Mexico.

Nathanial claimed that Ella was keeping a secret from producers that she’d confessed to him behind closed doors, before claiming to the cameras that he was refusing to show any intimacy.

He then revealed that Ella used to work as a stripper, which she insisted she ‘wasn’t ashamed of.’

Could this spark one of the earliest splits in the show’s history?

Earlier in the day, Ella was forced to face her fears while cave-diving with Nathanial, leading him to admit she was being ‘dramatic’ about taking the leap.

Ella then confessed that there was a lack of ‘sexual chemistry’ and intimacy between them, and was starting to feel that they were more like friends.

Nathanial insisted that their sexual connection would come with time, but Ella questioned why he wasn’t performing any kind of romantic gestures.

The pair’s bickering led Ella to storm off in frustration, while Nathanial questioned why he’d even signed up for the show. 

The pair’s rows continued back at their room, when Ella accused Nathan of ‘acting,’ which he then threw straight back at her, claiming that her issues were little more than a performance for the cameras.

Things then went from bad to worse as Nathanial and Ella headed to the beach the next day, with the blonde ready to apologise after calling her husband a ‘p***k.’

She said: ‘The reason is I am like this is because I feel like we are not just friends’

Nathanial hit back: ‘Was it vindictive? Or was it the truth? I have concerns you’re not in this for the same reason as me. Everything that I know…’

He then declared: ‘You’ve lied because you’re a stripper,’ before storming off.

Breaking down in tears, Ella said: ‘I told him I’ve stripped in the past, it’s not something I’m ashamed of. 

‘But I am worried that’s the reason he’s not being intimate. There’s nothing I can do.’

As they prepared for the last night of their honeymoon, the newlyweds opted to keep some distance between them.

The episode ended with Ella stood up by Nathanial after she invited him to dinner as a peace offering.

Elsewhere in the episode, Rozz and Thomas struggled to move on from their awkward start to married life after jetting away for a ski retreat in Austria, while Laura claimed that Arthur was holding too much back on their honeymoon to Mexico.

As their honeymoon came to a close, Arthur showed his commitment to Laura by re-writing his vows to her, and the pair sealed their marriage with a kiss.

But thinks were going far better for Jay and Luke, whose romance continued to blossom on their beach break in Grenada.

The pair even came close to consummating their marriage, but were sadly interrupted by their hotel housekeeper.

Two cast members from hit Australian reality series Below Deck Down Under have been sacked amid a sexual misconduct scandal on the show’s set.

Luke Jones and Laura Bileskalne were fired after separately getting into the beds of other members of the crew without consent, in the episode aired on August 7.

The latest episode of the show, which follows the jobs of staff catering to guests on a superyacht, included the moment Jones entered the cabin of cast member Margot Sisson naked and as she slept and attempted to climb into her bed.

It also included Bileskalne entering the room of cast member Adam Kodra and trying to massage and kiss him without consent before producers told her to ‘come down’.

UK domestic abuse charity Refuge praised the show for its handling of the incidents after the production team attempted to intervene and both Jones and Bileskalne were let go from their roles.

A spokesman for the charity said the episodes had ‘sparked vital conversations around consent’ and added: ‘We’re pleased to see that action was quickly taken to ensure a safe environment.’

On the show’s latest episode, which aired on Monday night, Luke Jones was terminated after climbing into the bed of Margot Sisson, who was naked and asleep, ‘without consent.’

Jones had been the ship’s bosun, the officer in charge of equipment and the crew.

Second stew Laura Bileskalne’s reaction to the incident also led to her getting let go by Captain Jason Chambers after she insisted to Sisson that Jones wasn’t to blame.

She was ultimately fired for showing ‘little respect and empathy’ toward Sisson as well as crossing boundaries with Adam Kodra.

The episode showed Sisson state over dinner that she was ‘really drunk’ before heading to bed.

Despite her state, Jones was seen repeatedly trying to flirt with Sisson and asked her to ‘cuddle’ with him as they sat in the back of a car together.

Chief stew Aesha Scott even told deckhand Culver Bradbury that she was going to keep an eye out for her, helping her back to her cabin and assuring her she would not let ‘any drunkenness’ get ‘taken advantage of’.

Sisson said ‘I am glad that you’re here’ but stated clearly: ‘I don’t want to go in the hot tub, I want to go bed. All I want is water and bed, no Luke.’

Returning from the hot tub, Jones went to Sisson’s cabin where she was alone and asleep.

Producers stepped in and told the bosun to leave her alone.

‘Can you f**k off for a second?’ he told the cameramen.

‘We can’t do that, she said no, she said no,’ the producers told him.

Scott returned to the cabin and told Sisson what had happened.

‘Oh my God. Ew, he was naked?’ Sisson responded, to which Scott asked: ‘Did you consent to him being in here?’  

‘No, I was asleep,’ said Margot. ‘I did not invite that at all.’

After establishing that Sisson was safe, Captain Jason was seen reviewing the night’s events with Luke the next morning, which he accepted, before ‘terminating’ his contract.

Below Deck Down Under is a popular American reality show following crew members working and residing aboard a 150-ft-plus yacht, first airing on March 17, 2022

In the same episode, stewardess Laura Bileskalne was fired after then climbing into crewmate Adam Kodra’s bunkbed and trying to massage him. 

Kodra had told Bileskalne multiple times that he wasn’t interested in pursuing anything with her beyond a friendship.

He told the show’s producers: ‘I’m not interested in Laura in the slightest.

‘I’ve told her a million times, like I just wanna be friends, but it’s just not getting the point across so I don’t know what to do.’

After a night of drinking, Bileskalne followed Kodra to his cabin.

She told him ‘we need to close the door’ while holding a tube of moisturiser in her hand.

Kodra climbed into the top bunk and tried to go to sleep, but Laura put lotion on his back in an attempt to massage him.

Producers again were forced to step in, ordering her to stop.

‘Laura, I got a message from producers telling you to come down,’ the cameraman informed her.

She then kept rubbing Kodra’s back, before a producer burst in and told her to ‘step down’ and go back to her own cabin. 

Captain Jason also sacked Bileskalne over the incident, and for showing little empathy with Sisson.

The events took place last year but aired for the first time on Monday.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that the Below Deck franchise has been embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal.

Last year, Below Deck Sailing Yacht caused firestorm on social media after a controversial sexual encounter between two cast members.

Stewardess Ashley Marti had sex with the yacht’s First Officer Gary King while he was highly intoxicated, which many viewers deemed ‘inappropriate’.

The show is a spin-off of the American reality TV show, Below Deck. 

Social media is jampacked with picture-perfect holiday snaps – but it’s worth taking these glossy posts with a pinch of salt. 

That’s the message shared by a handful of TikTokers who have taken it upon themselves to reveal how some of the world’s most beloved holiday hotspots can be something of a letdown.

Their videos illustrate the idealised expectations they had for their trips and how they contrast with the reality of the getaway, thanks to everything from uber-crowded streets to horrendous weather.

Below are some of the most startling examples, from the Maldives to Mykonos…

MALDIVES

A handful of TikTokers are revealing how some of the world’s most beloved holiday hotspots can be a letdown. Psychology student Beata Lexova shared a video showing what she expected from a trip to the Maldives (above) 

Beata’s video shows the Maldives in July, in the middle of the country’s rainy season. She admits: ‘It was very rainy and windy all day all week’  

When you think of the Maldives, blue skies and even bluer water might spring to mind. 

But psychology student Beata Lexova, 21, shared a video showing how her visit to the famously tropical archipelago in the midst of its rainy season – which lasts from April to November – panned out. Her footage captures grey stormy skies, lashing rain and palm trees flapping in the intense wind on the isle of Kuramathi.

Beata tells MailOnline Travel that she was ‘expecting hot sunny days with relaxing time [spent] on the beach’ during her trip to Indian Ocean islands, but was ‘disappointed by the weather’. She admits: ‘It was very rainy and windy all day all week.’

Sharing some advice to travellers planning a trip of their own, she adds: ‘After my experience, I would only go to the Maldives during winter.’

Blogger Mandy van der Heide, who runs the travel blog Unlimited Passport with her boyfriend Daniel, shared an ‘expectations versus reality’ video from an October trip to the Maldives 

The rainy season put a dampener on blogger Mandy’s travel plans in the Maldives. ‘We expected a paradise-like experience in the Maldives with crystal-clear waters and serene beaches,’ she says 

Mandy admits that even though the rain ‘disrupted’ their plans, the islands’ beauty still ‘amazed’ her

At one point in Mandy’s video of the Maldives, the wind is so intense that she can be seen struggling to keep her umbrella up on the beach. The gale eventually knocks her over 

Beata isn’t the only TikToker to have faced dismal weather in the Maldives. Blogger Mandy van der Heide shared a video showing how the rainy season put a dampener on her October trip to the Maldives. At one point in the clip, Mandy can be seen struggling to keep her umbrella up on the beach because the wind is so intense – and falling over on the sand seconds later. 

The 26-year-old, who runs the travel blog Unlimited Passport with her boyfriend Daniel, tells MailOnline Travel: ‘We expected a paradise-like experience in the Maldives with crystal-clear waters and serene beaches.’ Unfortunately, they found that the rain ‘disrupted’ some of their plans. 

Mandy was aware they hadn’t picked the optimum time to visit the islands. She says: ‘We took a last-minute deal and knew the rain season was about to end, but [hadn’t ended] yet.’ 

That said, the islands’ beauty still ‘amazed’ her, and the experience hasn’t put her off the archipelago. She says: ‘We’d love to explore more of the Maldives.’

THE PINK BEACH

Gabriela Sokolova, who works at a travel agency, travelled to Elafonissi Beach and turned her camera in on the ‘pink’ sands. Her video shows how the sand is a watered-down shade of pink in real life, rather than the bright candyfloss hue that’s often shown in photographs

Gabriela admits that she expected the beach ‘would not be as pink’ as it appears in photographs before her visit, so she wasn’t disappointed by the reality of its sands

Gabriela Sokolova, who works at a travel agency, ventured to Elafonissi Beach, a beach in southwest Crete that’s famous for its pastel-pink sands, on a work trip. The beach gets its unusual colouring from the reddish-hued seashells that have been crushed on the shore, local travel site Creti reveals.

An ‘expectation versus reality’ video captured by Gabriela shows how the sand is actually a watered-down shade of pink in real life, rather than the vibrant candyfloss hue that’s often shown in photographs. The 23-year-old admits that she expected the beach ‘would not be as pink’ as it appears in photographs before her visit, so she wasn’t disappointed by the reality of its sands.

In the comments below, several commenters pointed out that the pink sands are depleting because tourists steal sand from the beach – even though it’s strictly prohibited. User ‘Ioanna’ wrote: ‘People take the sand in bottles although they are not allowed to.’ And ‘Nancy’ said: ‘There isn’t so much pink sand anymore because tourists take it with them inside bags.’

Another drawback to the beach, Gabriela admits, is that sunbeds are ‘quite expensive’. It costs around £17 (€20/$22) to rent one, she reveals. However, her overall impression was a good one, she says, noting: ‘It is a very nice place [that’s] worth visiting. The water is beautiful and clear.’

MYKONOS

The isle of Mykonos, with its designer hotels and beach bars, is one of Greece’s most popular summer holiday destinations, but one TikTok video might put you off visiting the island by boat. 

The ‘expectation versus reality’ clip, shared by Swedish TikToker Sofia Bontin, shows Sofia and her friends sailing towards the island in the summertime. Unfortunately, their boat can be seen tossing and turning on enormous waves, with the queasy-looking passengers on board strapped into life jackets. 

Taking to the comment section on the video, which has gone viral on TikTok with more than two million views, TikToker ‘Fearless Fred’ remarked: ‘I’m surprised the skipper even agreed to take you to Mykonos in that weather.’ 

And user Lina pointed out that the Etesian winds blow over the Aegean Sea in the summer months, adding: ‘We call Mykonos “The Windy Island”… especially this season… it’s not really recommended for sailing!’ While ‘Motacilla’ commented: ‘For a true sailor, the reality looks better than the expectation.’

ITALIAN HOTSPOTS

Italy’s picturesque towns and villages have lots of admirers – so many that it can lead to overcrowding in peak season, some TikTokers have found. One such TikToker is Sandra Gutmanaite, who shared footage (above) from her trip to Cinque Terre, a string of pretty villages on the Italian Riviera

‘It was almost impossible to breathe,’ Sandra says of Cinque Terre. She had intended to visit all five villages in the region but left after the first 

Italy’s picturesque towns and villages have lots of admirers – so many that it can lead to overcrowding in peak season, some TikTokers have found.

Website creator Sandra Gutmanaite, 23, was taken aback by the volume of tourists in Cinque Terre, a string of pretty villages on the Italian Riviera. An ‘expectations versus reality’ video she captured shows slow-moving queues and streets packed with people.

Sandra, who was living in Tuscany at the time of her visit, says she was inspired to holiday in Cinque Terre as she had ‘seen it a lot on social media and travel magazines before’.

She visited the region twice during the off-season and found there were ‘almost no people there’, but when she returned during peak season – the month of May – she was stunned to find she was ‘getting super claustrophobic with all the people in the small towns’.

Sandra says: ‘It was almost impossible to breathe. We were planning to visit all five towns, however, we left after the first [village], since it was unbelievably busy.’ The TikToker adds that she was ‘really disappointed’ to have made the journey. 

Vicki Rutwind headed to Positano, a cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast, because she was inspired by the ‘beautiful images’ she’d seen of it online. ‘It looked like a magical place to visit in the summer,’ Vicki says of Positano

Vicki shared an eye-opening video of Positano’s crowded streets on TikTok. ‘The thing I found most disappointing was that it feels like you really can’t leave any room for spontaneity in Positano because it is so busy and popular,’ she says

Meanwhile, content creator Vicki Rutwind, 39, headed to Positano, a cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast, because she was inspired by the ‘beautiful images’ she’d seen of it online. ‘It looked like a magical place to visit in the summer,’ she tells MailOnline Travel, adding: ‘I was expecting to visit a charming seaside town, where I’d spend my days relaxing at beach clubs and my evenings eating homemade pasta at restaurants with that iconic Positano view.’

However, its popularity meant that everywhere she wanted to visit was booked out. 

The New York-based influencer, who shared an eye-opening video of the village’s crowded streets on TikTok, reveals: ‘The thing I found most disappointing was that it feels like you really can’t leave any room for spontaneity in Positano because it is so busy and popular. You need to plan out every element of your trip in advance.

‘That includes your hotel, every taxi you want to take, the beach clubs you want to visit, and where you want to have dinner each night. Everything books up. And even if you try to book things in advance, you may not even get the reservations you want, since Positano is so busy. We weren’t able to get reservations at any of the restaurants we wanted to try.’

While she says she’s likely to return in her capacity as a travel influencer, she says that next time, she’ll ‘have more realistic expectations and a better idea of how to plan [her] trip’.

Sister Wives is set to return for another season later this month – but fans have slammed its renewal and claimed that there is little point in continuing the show now that Kody Brown has split from three of his four wives.

The hit TLC show, which first aired in 2010, centers on the 54-year-old and his polyamorous family.

But, in recent years, Meri, Janelle and Christine have all parted ways from Kody – leaving Robyn as his only wife.

TLC took to Instagram to announce the premiere date for Season 18 with a moody image of Kody and his four wives all scowling toward the camera under an overlay of broken glass.

The caption read: ‘#SisterWives returns with a new season you can’t miss on Sunday, August 20th at 10/9c.’ 

But fans were quick to rush to the comments to express their dismay over the show’s return. 

‘There are no Sister Wives left…. Just cancel the show,’ one wrote.

‘For the love of God. PUT THE SHOW OUTTA IT’S MISERY!’ another exclaimed.

A third added: ‘Why Is This Show Still Airing? There’s No More SisterWives! I Don’t Want To See The Kody/Robyn Show!’

Alongside the promo image, TLC posted a mini trailer on Twitter which also revealed the premiere date.

‘The end was just the beginning. A can’t miss season of #SisterWives premieres Sunday Aug 20 at 10/9c,’ the tweet read.

They wrote: ‘Giving Kody and Robyn, two huge narcissists, a platform to continue to spew their hatred is not a good look anymore. Dump those two and do a spin-off of the other three women living their best lives without Kotex and Goblyn.’ 

Backlash aside, the trailer did deliver on the drama promised in the tweet.

The trailer cuts to yet another fight between Kody and Janelle, who tells Kody to ‘shut your f***ing mouth and let me talk to you for a minute,’ which prompts him to get up and leave the house, and appears to be the last straw for Janelle as he storms out of the house, as the trailer comes to an end.

The dramatic season comes not long after Kody’s split from his three wives.

A little over a year later, Janelle revealed she and Kody had separated during a supertease clip for the special Sister Wives: One on One. 

‘I think if we both really sat down, we’d look at each other say, ‘Really?” said Janelle in the clip. ‘We’ve been separated for several months.’

Kody told host Sukanya Krishnan, ‘Yes, we are separated.’ 

He added: ‘Janelle has made it pretty clear to me that she’s enjoying her life without me.’ 

A few days later, Meri confirmed that she and Kody were also no longer together in another teaser for the One on One special. 

They released an official statement in January.

‘After more than a decade of working on our relationship in our own unique ways, we have made the decision to permanently terminate our marriage relationship,’ a statement posted to their Instagram accounts read. 

Meri and Kody divorced in 2014 so he could legally marry his fourth wife, Robyn, and the couple are still together.

It has been years in the making, but Apple has officially debuted its AR headset at its annual World Wide Developers Conference.

The headset, called Apple Vision Pro, is the first of its products you look out for and not at, CEO Tim Cook said Monday at the live event.

The headset lets users merge the real world with a digital one controlled by their eyes, voice and hands.

Vision Pro has a single, thick band on the back of the head, connecting a large screen that sits over the eyes.

‘With Vision Pro, you’re no longer limited by a display,’ Cook said, introducing the new headset. 

Rumors speculated that the headset would feature a mixed reality, but Apple has focused solely on AR.

Apple calls it ‘spatial computing,’ which blends content into the space around you.

Users move their eyes and hands and say specific commands to power their journey through the augmented experience. 

Apple’s human interface chief Alan Dye said that users will select content inside the goggles with their eyes, tap their fingers together to click, and gently flick to scroll. 

And the EyeSight feature shows people in the room your eyes, unlike Meta’s Quest, which features an opaque visor.

Vision Pro’s exterior screen goes dark when a user is fully immersed in a virtual world. 

When a person approaches a user in full virtual mode, the headset will show the user and the outside person to each other. 

‘You’re never isolated from people around you,’ Dye said. ‘You can see them, and they can see you.’ 

For work uses, Apple showed how the headset can be used with a trackpad and keyboard to work like a traditional computer with multiple displays.

Tudor Children by Nicholas Orme (Yale £20, 288pp) 

When you look at Tudor drawings of children driving oxen, harvesting corn or playing with hobby-horses, they seem to have weirdly grown-up faces.

In Nicholas Orme’s fascinating snapshot of Tudor children in his new book on the subject, we see 1500s illustrations of swaddled babies and toddlers in their wheeled walking frames, and they all look like little wizened old men.

It’s almost as if the Tudors didn’t really believe in childhood. ‘Did children, as we understand it, exist in Tudor England?’ Orme asks — or were they just treated as small adults from the moment of birth, living brief, harsh, overworked lives?

Discovering the truth is not easy, for the precise reason that children were not considered particularly interesting in Tudor days. Across swathes of the population, they were simply put to work from the age of five, to earn money for their hungry families. They could be hanged for crimes, just as adults could, and even the minor punishments were harsh: one boy, Peter Carew, who played truant from his school in Exeter, was punished by being ‘tied to a rope and led round the city like a dog’.

There was no rule that children had to go to school and, I must say, I would have avoided it. Schoolmasters would shout: ‘Up with him!’ if a boy misbehaved and the unhappy miscreant was carried up to the front of the classroom and held on the back of another boy who pulled his trousers down, so the master could birch him on his bare bottom.

A wealthy family at leisure: But for most children life was harsh

More was recorded about the lives of upper-class children than lower-class ones. The Tudor educationalist Sir Thomas Elyot wrote a book called The Governor, about how to educate high-born sons and daughters, and I think we can blame him for promoting the reign of heartiness which would take root in Britain’s public schools. He stipulated that all boys should be trained in riding, hunting, running and wrestling.

He was not as strict about girls’ pursuits, entreating them to acquire the accomplishments of weaving and cooking.

But don’t be fooled that Tudor girls’ education was purely domestic. The future queen, Elizabeth I, was well-educated in foreign languages, writing a letter in fluent Italian at the age of 11.

I loved this book for its pin-sharp glimpses of what really went on in the daily lives and minds of children. Of all unlikely sources, Orme came across some Tudor foreign-language textbooks containing sample sentences for translation. ‘We will make a pit-hole and there cast our nuts.’ Ah, so that was a common game.

‘Thou stinkest . . . thou art worthy to be hanged.’ ‘I shall kill thee with thine own knife.’ ‘He is the vilest coward that ever pissed.’

Slightly more exciting than today’s textbooks with their boring sample sentences like ‘At the weekend, I enjoy going to the cinema with my friend’.

Boys played with dolls. The mother of one Tudor two-year-old boy, John Johnson, wrote to her husband begging him to bring back ‘some baby’ from London — ‘baby’ being another word for doll.

From doll-playing, boys progressed to nest-robbing, cock-fighting, bird-trapping — and the popular sport of half-burying a cockerel and aiming missiles at it. So, not much sentimentality about either children or animals in those days, then.

Bed-sharing was the norm at the time: two to a bed till the age of 15 at Christ’s Hospital school, and three to a bed (head-to-toe) for choristers at Winchester College.

One boy slept in the same bed as his schoolmaster, and another in the same bed as his uncle, who was a priest. We cannot know whether those were situations of sexual abuse or merely a matter of shortage of space.

One thing we do know is that, as soon as the Reformation took hold in the mid-1530s, the Puritans couldn’t stop preaching the virtues of virginity and chastity in the young.

They were also keen that children should fast. Forced to eat fish every day in Lent, one poor boy wrote: ‘How weary am I of fish!’

And, in the early days of the printing press, they tried to stop them from reading their secular Robin Hood-type stories, which they disparaged as ‘fables of love, wantonness and ribaldry, so filthy as heart cannot think, to corrupt the minds of youth’.

They wanted children to exist solely on a diet of the Bible.

That was the cultural battleground of the 1500s, but Tudor children would not so easily be turned away from their favourite book, Bevis, full of murder, fights, knights, monsters, imprisonments and abductions.

One Venetian in the 1500s commented harshly that England had a ‘want of affection . . . strongly manifested towards their children’.

He was referring to the habit of boarding children out in other people’s houses, where boys took on roles as carvers, cupbearers or choristers, and girls as junior ladies-in-waiting, or in many cases as menial domestic servants stuck in the scullery.

But as Orme suggests, that tradition was not all bad. Living in other households instilled the habits of good manners and hard work in teenagers and widened their horizons. They toughened you up, those Tudor mums and dads.

Orme’s sleuthing has opened our eyes to that lost generation.

Nikki Haley used her personal struggle with fertility to emphasize her pro-life stance as she tackled the abortion issue in a major policy speech on Tuesday where she called on Republicans to face ‘reality’ when it comes to the controversial issue.

Her remarks were designed to appeal to moderate voters as many in the Republican Party have expressed concern that some abortion laws being passed – like the ban on abortions after 12 weeks that Ron DeSantis signed in Florida – are too restrictive and will turn off the swing voters who will decide the next election.

As the issue divides the Republican Party, Haley called for consensus and a ‘constructive conversation’ on the matter.

Haley, speaking at the headquarters of the influential pro-life group Susan B. Anthony, described herself as ‘pro life.’ 

‘I am unapologetic, or unhesitating about it,’ the Republican presidential candidate said. ‘I want to save as many lives and help as many moms as possible.’

Haley, the only declared female Republican presidential candidate, said her party has ‘to face this reality. The pro-life laws that have passed in strongly Republican states will not be approved at the federal level. That’s just a fact.’

Florida is one of about a dozen states with the most restrictive abortion laws in the country. Lawsuits are ongoing throughout the country after a wave of bans was passed after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. 

A recent CBS News poll showed that 58% of Americans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases and that includes 62% of independent voters and 29% of Republicans. 

Haley called for a ‘constructive conversation about where we go from here in our divided country.’

‘This shouldn’t be about one movement winning, and another one losing,’ she said. ‘This shouldn’t be about picking sides, scoring points, or stoking outrage. It’s about saving babies and supporting moms.’

But she didn’t say at what point in a pregnancy she supports an abortion taking place and she has thus far avoid attaching herself to any specific proposal.

In February, she told NBC’s Today Show: ‘We need consensus on this because I want to save as many babies as possible and I want to support as many moms as possible. Is that consensus 15 weeks? Is it ten weeks? Is it six weeks? I don’t know what that is, but we need to figure this out for the good of these babies and for the good of the moms.’ 

She didn’t offer any stronger details on Tuesday. But, in her remarks, she made the issue personal, describing how her husband Michael was adopted and she was grateful his parents chose life.

‘Every day is a blessing because someone gave him life,’ she said. ‘Every day is a blessing because a family loved and raised him under difficult conditions.’

She also described how the couple struggled with fertility issues before having son Nalin and daughter Rena.

‘Michael and I struggled to have children of our own. I had many challenges as a teenager, and in my college years. I went through numerous surgeries. When Michael and I were married, I couldn’t wait to be a mom. But what happened so easily for many of my friends, was not my family. We went through countless sessions of fertility treatments,’ she said.

‘Every day I wake up and see or speak to my two children. I feel blessed. The greatest job I’ve ever had, is being there mom,’ she said.

In her remarks, Haley outlined areas she believes Americans can find consensus: making adoptions easier, not punishing a woman for having an abortion, not forcing medical personnel to go against their personal beliefs to provide abortion, make contraception more available, and ban late-term abortions.

In her call for a calm conversation, she blasted President Joe Biden for stirring the pot on the issue.

She said he promotes division instead of trying to bring people together.

‘That’s not leadership. It’s the it’s more partisanship of the worst kind of pro life political leaders and candidates must not put up with being demonized. We should call out the extremism on the left,’ she said.

Democrats see abortion as a winning issue for their party. In the 2022 midterm election, the abortion issue rallied voters and kept Democrats in control of the Senate. In the House, Republicans won a small, five-seat majority. 

Haley, in her remarks, was careful to stay away from controversy. She focused on a middle path, offering compassion and understanding to both sides of the issue.

‘Most people have a story that has brought them to their views about abortion. It could be your personal experience. It could be a trauma that a family member or friend endured. It could be a moral conviction. It could be our concerns about our daughters and their future,’ she said. 

And she then shared her story.

Haley also criticized those who push for specific positions on abortion. 

‘How many weeks are you for? How many exceptions are you for and the list goes on. But these questions missed the point if the goal is about saving as many lives as possible. You don’t save any lives,’ she said.

She concluded by calling on Americans to come together.

‘Let us treat it as the important and deeply personal issue that it is. Let’s discuss it in a way that allows Americans to show love for one another not judgment or contempt. And let’s find a consensus that allows us to save as many babies as we can, while supporting women in difficult situations.’
