New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has offered some stern advice to both his teammates and fans as frustrations grow after multiple poor performances on offense.

Rodgers was making his weekly appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ when he said that he wasn’t a fan of the ‘little side conversations’ that took place during the 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots and said his teammates needed to ‘grow up.’

‘I think we need to hold our poise a little bit better across the board,’ Rodgers said.

‘Just offensively, we need to not have some of those things happen on the sideline and to be a little better and to be a, just be a little better competitors.

‘Too many little side conversations, and we just need to grow up a little bit on offense and lock in and do our jobs and not point fingers at each other — and that’s everybody. Don’t point fingers at the coaching staff, don’t point fingers at each other. Just get back to work and get the job done.’

Rodgers was in large part alluding to the animated conversations seen on the sidelines involving WR Garrett Wilson and RB Michael Carter.

The future Hall of Fame quarterback was forced to watch the game against New England from his home on Sunday as he continues the first steps in rehabbing the torn Achilles, he suffered only four plays into his Jets debut in Week 1.

New York pulled off a miraculous overtime win against the Buffalo Bills during that Week 1 game before dropping the next to contest after Zach Wilson filled in as the starter and the offense delivered putrid performances in both games.

‘I feel like if I was there, some of those things wouldn’t be happening,’ said Rodgers, who underwent Achilles surgery Sept. 13. ‘[I’m] not sure we’d be 3-0 — I don’t know that.

‘I’d like to think there’s a possibility of that, but it’s more the side stuff that I don’t like and that I want to see us stick together through the tough times.’

The tough times were seemingly made worse very quickly as Jets legend and NFL Hall of Famer Joe Namath went full scorched earth in voicing his displeasure with Wilson’s performances, as well as the Jets lead decision makers for staying loyal to the struggling third-year QB.

Wilson was benched last year by head coach Robert Saleh on two separate occasions for poor play, however Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas decided on a plan to allow Wilson to backup Rodgers and learn from one of the games greats before regaining the starting role in after Rodgers eventually retired.

After that plan was quickly altered following Rodgers injury the Jets then chose not to bring in a veteran quarterback to challenge, if not replace, Wilson as the starter.

Earlier on Tuesday the Jets completed the signing of veteran journeyman Trevor Siemian to the practice squad although he is far from considered a savior at the position due to his resume.

The 31-year-old Siemian has a career record of 13-17, with 42 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. His only seasons as a starter came in 2016 and 2017 with the Denver Broncos and has since been released from several backup roles.

Siemian was the Jets backup in 2019 and filled in for then QB Sam Darnold who was dealing with mononucleosis, but only lasted one quarter before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

Before adding Siemian, the Jets were linked with several other QBs including Colin Kaepernick who recently had a letter he sent to the Jets asking for a chance to prove himself made public by award-winning rapper J Cole.

Matthew Hudson-Smith smashes European record to reach 400m final at the World Championships just a month after leaving a Diamond League meeting in a wheelchair

  • Matthew Hudson-Smith powered into Thursday’s 400m final in Budapest
  • The one-lap specialist set a new European record with a time of 44.26sec
  • He left last month’s Diamond League meeting in London in a wheelchair

After Matthew Hudson-Smith left last month’s Diamond League meeting in London in a wheelchair many wondered whether the Brit would compete in Budapest.

The 28-year-old was unwilling to disclose the exact nature of his leg injury but revealed it was causing him significant pain on a daily basis.

Despite his obvious discomfort he insisted there was no way he would be absent from these World Championships, which would have meant surrendering the 400m bronze he won last summer in Oregon.

Hudson-Smith has shown he is a fighter before. And he came out swinging on Tuesday night, winning his semi-final to advance to Thursday’s men’s 400m final.

The one-lap specialist obliterated the field and set not just a British record but a new European record, with a time of 44.26sec.

‘I will be happy when I get that medal, as for today (the record) that is just job done,’ said Hudson-Smith. ‘Coach told me to execute over the first 300m and make sure the job was done and then, when I knew I was clear, I was saving something for the final.’

His game plan for this race was clear. To come out hard and see if the rest of the field dared to go with him. Perhaps they were taken by surprise at Hudson-Smith’s bold approach.

We should know by now never to write him off. It was after his incredible triumph in Oregon that Hudson-Smith revealed the true extent of the struggles he had faced just a year earlier.

He admitted his mental health struggles — brought about by the loss of his sponsors and injury struggles — led him to attempt to take his own life.

But on Tuesday night he showed he is not just here to defend his bronze. He is here to go a step, or even two, higher on the podium.

Binge drinking, marijuana and hallucinogen use have reached historic highs among adults aged 35 to 50 in the US.

Nearly one-third of people in this age group reported binge drinking — having more than five drinks on one occasion — in 2022, up from 23 percent in 2012, National Institutes of Health research revealed.

Marijuana use among 35- to 50-year-olds has also reached historic levels, more than doubling from 13 percent in 2012 to 28 percent last year. The dramatic increase could partly be due to the growing legalization of the drug across states in the US.

And the share of adults using hallucinogens, such as LSD, MDMA and shrooms, also doubled over 10 years. While four percent reported use in 2022, less than one percent used these drugs a decade ago.

Rising depression rates are likely factors driving adults to reach for the bottle, as the expectation that alcohol will relieve these feelings may increase an individual’s desire to drink more, other studies have suggested.

Depression rates are thought to have been exacerbated during the Covid-19 pandemic due to lockdowns, loss of loved ones, and increased isolation and anxiety.

Hallucinogen use, such as LSD, MDMA and shrooms, has doubled over 10 years to four percent in 2022 from less than one percent a decade ago in people aged 35-50

The poll also looked at alcohol and drug use among 19 to 30-year-olds, more of whom used marijuana than older adults. In 2022, 44 percent of these young adults reported using it, up from 28 percent in 2012.

Hallucinogen use in this group was two times what it was among their older counterparts, with eight percent reporting the use of these types of drugs. This is significantly higher than rates a decade ago, which were recorded at three percent.

However, self-reported binge drinking in 19- to 30-year-olds had dropped to 30.5 percent in 2022, a decrease from 35 percent a decade earlier.

Monitoring the Future, an ongoing research initiative that uses annual studies to track the behaviors of US students into adulthood, suggested the varying rises over the years are generational.

Megan Patrick, a research professor at the University of Michigan and principal investigator on the study, said: ‘Drug use trends evolve over decades and across development, from adolescent to adulthood.

‘Behaviors and public perception of drug use can shift rapidly, based on drug availability and other factors.’

For example, among adults aged 35-50, the 50-year-olds had used marijuana the least, with 68 percent reporting using it at some point in their life.

The study said: ‘These respondents graduated from high school in 1990, when marijuana and other drugs were at or near historical lows across the past four decades, suggesting a cohort effect.’

The cohort effect is the effect that having been born in a certain time or region has on the development or perceptions of a group of individuals.

A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found drug- and alcohol-related deaths in people over 65 years old had more than tripled in the last two decades, with 17,000 dying from those causes in 2020 alone.

Deaths among women in this age group were climbing at a higher rate than men.

Rates of alcohol death were rising even before Covid-19 — a period when BOTH men and women were known to turn to booze during the isolation and stress of pandemic lockdowns.

Women might have drunk more because of stress, depression and anxiety, but also because of loneliness, as many are left behind following the death of a male partner, experts said in a study published in JAMA.

Alcohol also affects women differently, the study explained.

Women’s bodies tend to have less water to dilute alcohol concentrations compared to men, meaning they are more likely to develop health problems from booze.

Hunter Biden‘s business partner Devon Archer revealed that Ukrainian oil company Burisma used vague terms to demand he use his influence as the then-vice president’s son for help.

According to Archer, during a dinner with Burisma executives at the Four Seasons in Dubai in December 2015, Hunter said he would be able to get ‘help from D.C.’ in order to relieve some ‘government pressure’ on the company.

He said that the Burisma executives Mykola Zlochevsky and Vadym Pozharskyi did not directly ask Hunter ‘can the big guy help?’

Rather, they used the ‘amorphous’ term: ‘can we get help in D.C.?’

‘The request — you know, basically the request is like, can D.C. help?’ said Archer.

‘But there were not — you know, I’m not going to — there were not — it wasn’t like — there weren’t specific, you know, can the big guy help? It was — it’s always this amorphous, can we get help in D.C.?’

Hunter and his father are seen meeting Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov (right) and oligarch Kenes Rakishev (left)

Archer said he understood that ‘D.C.’ meant Hunter’s influence based on his connection to his then-VP father.

‘Well, I mean, he was a lobbyist and an expert and obviously he carried, you know, a very powerful name. So I think it was that’s what they were asking for,’ said Archer about Hunter.

He then continued on to confirm that immediately after Hunter was asked to help during the Four Seasons meeting, he ‘called his dad.’

Although Archer was not ‘privy’ to the call, he was told that ‘we called D.C.’

Another former associate of the first son, U.S. Navy veteran Tony Bobulinski, publicly claimed in October 2020 that ‘big guy’ was a reference to President Biden.

In addition, an internal FBI document revealed that Burisma CEO Zlochevsky had also referred to Joe as the ‘big guy.’

Archer testified that Burisma was ‘getting pressure’ and as a result, they ‘requested Hunter, you know, help them with some of that pressure.’

He said it was ‘government pressure’ from the ongoing Ukrainian corruption investigation into the company at the time – led by top prosecutor Viktor Shokin.

However, Archer said that Shokin ‘wasn’t specifically on my radar as being an individual that was — that was targeting him.’

‘I vaguely — whether it was Shokin, I vague — there was a lot of pressure initially. There was — there was several pressure issues. It was kind of a theme of Burisma.’

‘But yes, there was constant pressure. And it was like it was like whack a mole in regards to the pressures that had to resolve,’ Archer continued.

In March 2016, Joe Biden is alleged to have threatened to withhold $1 billion in aid to Ukraine if Shokin was not fired for corruption, which he eventually was.

DailyMail.com obtained the full transcript of Archer’s testimony Thursday following his closed-door deposition before the House Oversight Committee on Monday.

Archer, Hunter’s ex-best friend and business associate, sat with him on Burisma’s board beginning in 2014 and was co-founder of Rosemont Seneca Partners, an investment advisory firm. They each made around $83,000 per month as Burisma board members.

Archer also told Congress that Joe Biden‘s ‘intimidating’ influence directly led to his son receiving huge sums of foreign money – and a $142,300 Porsche.

According to the full transcript of his testimony obtained by DailyMail.com on Thursday, Archer said that the Biden ‘brand’ acted as protection for Ukrainian oil company Burisma because ‘people would be intimidated to mess with them.’

Hunter’s presence on Burisma’s board and access to his father – then vice president – led to the company’s ‘longevity’ because they had the ‘capabilities to navigate D.C.,’ Archer said according to the transcript.

‘I think Burisma would have gone out of business if it didn’t have the brand attached to it. That’s my, like, only honest opinion,’ Archer continued.

Archer also added that Hunter Biden would refer to his father as ‘my guy,’ which Republicans noted following the closed-door testimony on Monday.

According to the transcript, Hunter was ‘getting paid a lot of money’ by Burisma and ‘wanted to show value’ by getting credit for Joe Biden’s Ukraine trip in 2014.

‘I can’t guide my father in what he’s going to do on this trip, but let’s get credit for it,’ Archer said Hunter was thinking by referring to his dad as ‘my guy.’

Exhibit 2 in the attachments also showed Hunter, on email as ‘Robert,’ writing to Archer in April 2014 saying ‘our guy needs to set himself up as the anti-Victor Pinchuk (coal and steel oligarch – pro Russian Yanukuvich supporter).

At the time, then-Vice President Joe Biden was leading the U.S. anti-corruption efforts abroad.

Hunter’s best friend and business associate sat with him on Burisma’s board beginning in 2014. They also started Rosemont Seneca Partners, an investment advisory firm, together.

He confirmed that Hunter put Joe on speakerphone 20 times during business meetings over a 10-year period, which was a ‘signal’ of ‘value,’ and Hunter used his dad as ‘defensive leverage.’

He also told lawmakers that Joe sat and had dinner in-person on at least two occasions with Hunter and his foreign business partners, who then wired money almost immediately after to Biden-affiliated companies.

In the spring of 2014, Joe joined Hunter and a handful of his business partners for dinner at Cafe Milano in Washington, D.C. Those at the dinner included Kenes Rakishev, Karim Massimov, Yelena Baturina and possibly Eric Schwerin.

Archer confirmed that Joe was present long enough to eat dinner with the group.

Following the dinner, $3.5 million was wired from Russian billionaire Yelena Baturina into Rosemont Seneca Thornton on February 14.

On April 22, $142,300 was wired into the Rosemont Seneca Bohai account from Kenes Rakishev, a businessman from Kazakhstan, who was also at the Cafe Milano dinner.

The payment was made as a gift to Hunter, who received an ‘expensive car.’

Archer told the committee: ‘I believe it was a Fisker first and then a Porsche.’

Hunter took a picture of himself while driving a Porsche at 172mph on a highway outside Las Vegas in 2018, according to pictures found on his abandoned laptop. It was not immediately clear if the Porsche gifted to Hunter by Rakishev was the same vehicle.

The then-vice president also sat in on another dinner with Hunter and his partners in 2015 at Cafe Milano, Archer confirmed.

Questions had remained about why Archer decided to cooperate with the committee this week after he previously cancelled on the committee at least three times in recent weeks.

Archer, 48, was subpoenaed on June 12 by the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating Hunter’s businesses and whether he and other members of the Biden family improperly traded on their connections.

According to Archer’s opening statement in the transcript, he said ‘it’s been a long decade’ and his entire forties have been ‘mired in fighting the government.’

‘So I want to be cooperative now and maybe we can all be friends. So let’s take it from there,’ he told committee staff and lawmakers.

Archer is facing legal troubles of his own and is expected to go to prison shortly.

He was sentenced to one year and a day in prison in February 2022 for defrauding a Native American tribal entity and various investment advisory clients of tens of millions of dollars, in connection with the issuance of $60 million in bonds.

He is on the hook with his co-conspirators for $43.4 million in restitution over the fraud.

On the eve of his testimony, the Department of Justice sent a letter calling for Archer’s sentencing to be expedited.

Republicans claimed the move by DOJ was an attempt to ‘intimidate’ Archer, who they view as being central to providing information that is critical to their ongoing investigation into whether Joe Biden was involved in his son’s foreign business deals.

DOJ seemingly walked back their request in a fresh Sunday filing, telling District Judge Abrams that they did not wish to see Archer imprisoned before he testified before Congress.

‘To be clear, the Government does not request (and has never requested) that the defendant [Archer] surrender before his Congressional testimony,’ the letter read.

The White House has maintained the president was never ‘in business’ with his son, but the GOP have ramped up their investigation with testimonies from whistleblowers and a slew of other evidence.

After Archer’s closed-door testimony on Monday to the House Oversight Committee, Republicans said he revealed Joe was directly involved in Hunter’s shady dealings, while Democrats insisted the then-vice president’s involvement was innocent and focused on ‘niceties,’ not business.

Father-and-son duo Graham and Steve Reid reach last 64 of the Daily Mail Foursomes after firing four birdies on home Inverurie course

  • The Reids eased past 2019 semi-finalists Marc Palmer and Michael Alexander
  • They have kept Inverurie in the hunt for a third straight grand final appearance
  • Inverurie has an impressive record in the world’s largest amateur competition

Father and son Graham and Steve Reid are into the last 64 of the Daily Mail Foursomes to keep Inverurie in touching distance of a hat-trick of consecutive grand final appearances.

The family duo fired four birdies on their home parkland course to ease past 2019 semi-finalists Marc Palmer and Michael Alexander, from Inverallochy, 4&3 and are now only two knockout games away from a place in this year’s October showpiece at Marriott St Pierre.

Scottish club Inverurie, which is celebrating its centenary, has an impressive record in the world’s largest amateur golf competition. Jackie Guthrie and Lorna Donaldson reached the last 16 in 2021, while Charlie Robertson and Graeme Coutts repeated that feat last year.

Steve, 39, who sank a 20-foot putt to seal their latest victory, normally plays with his brother Stuart, but after the 38-year old broke his elbow he started playing with his dad instead. Last year they won the club’s stroke play better ball competition, which gave them the idea to give Foursomes a try.

Despite their success, five handicapper Steve admits the new pairing has been demanding at times. He says with a smile: ‘It’s safe to say alternate shots with your dad is very challenging, as a sport and for your relationship! It is a very different dynamic to playing with your little brother, who will listen to you, and your dad who definitely won’t listen to you.

‘There’s a bit of a difference between our handicaps. I’ve been in some weird and wonderful places. I’ve seen more of the countryside than I would normally. I’ve had to play over trees and out of bushes. It’s been good fun looking up and seeing dad grinning and shake his head when you hole a putt or chip in.’

Graham, 63, who plays off 14, agrees: ‘I don’t always listen. You’ve got to be a dad sometimes. There are times when he will ask me to play a certain shot and there are times when I feel I am not going to play that way.

‘There’s plenty of good banter. He pulls off some amazing golf shots. He’s a really good golfer, but that’s a sign of a good dad when your son is better at playing golf than you are.’

Next up for the pair is a tie at Arbroath in the sixth round. This tournament is the only golf Steve is playing this year, as he is dedicating time to his young family. He has a daughter Peyton, who turns three today, and welcomed his second child, Jackson, in June. ‘Whenever we get knocked out that will be the end of my golfing season,’ he says.

‘We’ve been getting better as it has gone on. Dad played well in the last round so we managed to get a convincing win. It’s been memorable playing with him and fingers crossed we can go a bit further.’

Graham also has some lofty aims: ‘I would love to get to the finals, especially with my son,’ he says. ‘That would be brilliant.’

Competition to lift the trophies will be intense when the last 16 men’s and women’s teams head to the South Wales championship course.

Pound rises alongside government borrowing costs again as investors up bets on further hikes in interest rates

  • Sterling topped $1.28 against the dollar for the first time since April last year
  • It rounded off the pound’s biggest weekly gain for six months
  • Yield on two-year gilts came within a whisker of 5% for first time since 2008

The pound rose alongside government borrowing costs again yesterday as investors ramped up bets on further hikes in interest rates.

With the Bank of England widely expected to raise rates to a 15-year high of 4.75 per cent next week, sterling topped $1.28 against the dollar for the first time since April last year.

It rounded off the pound’s biggest weekly gain for six months, having been trading around $1.25 at the start of the week.

The yield on two-year gilts – a key driver of mortgage rates – also headed to within a whisker of 5 per cent for the first time since 2008.

Two-year bond yields are now higher than they were in the aftermath of the Liz Truss mini-Budget in September – pushing up the cost of borrowing for the government, households and businesses.

Philip Shaw, an economist at Investec, said financial markets had ‘suffered a huge panic attack for the past month’ as inflation remains stubbornly high.

Investors are betting interest rates will keep rising to at least 5.75 per cent this year and possibly even 6 per cent – a level not seen since 2001.

That would spell misery for millions of households with mortgages. Laith Khalaf, head of investment analysis at AJ Bell, said ‘alarm bells [are] ringing in the market’.

He added: ‘The Bank of England is caught between a rock and a hard place, as it has to choose between pushing more mortgage borrowers towards the brink and letting inflation run riot.’

Sterling and bond yields have risen sharply since official figures last month showed inflation at a higher than expected 8.7 per cent.

The rally gained steam this week when the Office for National Statistics reported that wages were up 7.2 per cent on a year ago – the sharpest increase on record outside the coronavirus pandemic.

The figures fuelled expectations that the Bank will have to keep raising interest rates in the coming months – starting again on Thursday next week.

Nicholas Rees, currency market analyst at Monex Europe, said expectations for interest rates were ‘flirting with a terminal peak rate closer to 6pc’.

He said: ‘Markets have, in our view, become more comfortable with the idea of a higher terminal rate. This shift has provided modest support for sterling over the course of the week.’

All eyes will be on the latest inflation data, which the ONS will publish on Wednesday before the Bank’s announcement.

The Bank has raised interest rates from 0.1 per cent in December 2021 to 4.5 per cent.

Khalaf said: ‘The market is now firmly pricing in an interest rate rise at the MPC’s June meeting, and then four further hikes, taking us to 5.75 per cent. A few hawkish comments from the Bank of England, or more ugly inflation data, could easily tip those expectations up to 6 per cent.’

Public faith in Bank of England tumbles to record low

A survey for the central bank by the polling firm Ipsos found that net satisfaction with how well it was controlling inflation had crashed to minus 13 per cent.

The slump comes as inflation remains stubbornly high at 8.7 per cent – more than four times the 2 per cent target – although this has come down from a peak of 11.1 per cent last year.

Death Valley is the hottest place on Earth, baking in temperatures of more than 120°F (49°C) during the summer.

Aside from the heat, Death Valley is also home to numerous horrifying scorpions, tarantulas and venomous sidewinder snakes that silently lurk in the Californian desert.

And you might want to watch your step too, as mineshafts filled with poisonous gas are in more places than you might expect.

So, how do people survive in a place like this?

MailOnline explores the tops threats of Death Valley National Park and what park rangers advise to get by in the extreme conditions.

Death Valley is one of the hottest places in the world, baking in temperatures of  20°F

Death Valley is one of the hottest places in the world, baking in temperatures of  20°F

1.  Weather that can kill

‘Travel prepared to survive’ is the guidance of the National Park’s service as they warn of killer local temperatures.

Death Valley is famously known as the hottest place on Earth and the driest place in North America.

It’s not unheard of for people to die here, but the real toll of heat-related illnesses remains unknown.

The valley’s top temperatures peaked at 134°F (57°C) almost 110 years ago at the tiny village of Furnace Creek, before dropping to around 32°F (0°C) at night.

These hot-to-cold temperatures are quite normal in the region, with its sand cooling so rapidly at night that freezing conditions often occur.

‘Don’t become a Death Valley victim,’ rangers advise.

‘Drink at least one gallon (4 litres) of water per day to replace loss from sweat, more if you are active. Be aware of balancing fluid and electrolyte levels.

‘Stay on paved roads in summer. If your car breaks down, stay with it until help comes. Carry extra drinking water in your car in case of emergency.’

Although winter is a little milder in Death Valley, the area continues to be plagued by occasional thunderstorms and huge flash floods.

Even still, rangers urge visitors and locals to always watch out for trouble, as nausea and dizziness can be a sign of heatstroke.

2. Gnarly animals

The 140-mile desert is home to some pretty creepy creatures, from rattlesnakes to scorpions and even black widow spiders.

That’s why park leaders warn that anyone venturing through this harsh terrain should never place their hands or feet in something they can’t see clearly.

The Wernerius inyoensis scorpion was newly discovered in the Inyo Mountains of the valley in 2009, and is one of the smallest to be discovered in the US.

Although it is venomous, this species probably won’t kill you – unlike numerous others in the park – though its pincers still risk a hospital trip.

Tarantulas and Mojave desert sidewinder snakes also lurk here, with the latter potentially capable of killing a young child or animals up to 30Ibs.

But you may be surprised to know that rodents actually pose a huge risk of death in the area as contact with them or their excrement can spread hantaviruses.

Fatigue, fever and muscle aches are among the symptoms of this, in addition to chills and abdominal problems.

While it’s unclear if anyone has contracted this in the valley, researchers have found traces of a hantavirus variant in local cactus mice.

3. Treacherous roads

With scorching temperatures and countless scorpions, you may expect these to be the leading cause of death in the aptly named Death Valley.

But park leaders say that car crashes actually kill the most people here, having reported numerous incidents over the years.

Poor phone signal limits efforts to get help, with the valley completely isolated from neighbouring Las Vegas.

‘More people die in single-car accidents than by any other means,’ they claim.

‘To avoid an accident, follow the speed limits, shift to a lower gear on steep downhill grades, and wear your seatbelt.’

4. Poisonous mineshafts

During the late 1800s, many eagerly flocked to Death Valley in an attempt to mine for gold and silver.

But these efforts were met with failure, thanks to the scarcity of water, fuel and technology that made it impossible to find anything valuable.

To this day, abandoned mines are scattered all across the desert.

One of the most controversial is the 500ft-deep Boraxo Mine, which reportedly caused public outcry over the exploitation of national parks.

While these historic sites may seem interesting to explore, rangers say they should be avoided at all costs.

They’re not only unstable but may contain ‘pockets of bad air’ and even poisonous gas, they claim.

This bad air can consist of insufficient oxygen and potentially carbon-monoxide, with the University of Nevada warning that someone may not feel the effects until they leave a mine.

‘A person may enter such areas breathing the good air above the gases but the motion caused by walking will mix the gases with the good air, producing a possibly lethal mixture for him to breathe on the return trip,’ they explain

‘Because little effort is required to go down a ladder, the effects of “bad air” may not be noticed, but when climbing out of a shaft, a person requires more oxygen and breathes more deeply. The result is dizziness, followed by unconsciousness. If the gas doesn’t kill, the fall will.’

Some areas of Death Valley are home to Breaking Bad-esque illegal marijuana growing sites

5.  Dangerous cannabis farms

If you’ve watched Breaking Bad you may be familiar with Walter White’s cannabis farm planted at the centre of an isolated desert.

As it turns out, some areas of Death Valley are home to very similar sites, which rangers claim are potential hazards.

If a local stumbles upon one of these, the service advises them to ‘run, walk, crawl or hide’ just to make themselves safe.

Lingering to take photos or grab location coordinates is also a bad idea, with a physical description good enough to alert authorities.

Rangers add: ‘Hikers, backpackers and drivers need to be self reliant and well prepared. Always plan ahead, carry detailed maps, and let someone know your plans.’

TOP SPIN AT THE TEST: Joe Root became the second England player to reach 30 Test centuries after Sir Alastair Cook… and it was the first time Jimmy Anderson wasn’t handed the new ball since 2009

  • Joe Root’s 118* took England to 393-8 on day one of the Ashes at Edgbaston
  • Ben Stokes declared late on after fifties for Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow
  • Australia ended the day unscathed in response after an excellent day’s cricket

England surprised everyone at Edgbaston as they executed the earliest first-innings declaration in Ashes history.

Joe Root‘s scored an unbeaten 118 that helped to pull England from 176-5 to 393-8 before Ben Stokes called his players in to leave Australia facing 20 minutes of bowling to end the day.

The Aussies survived, finishing on 14-0, on a first day that lived up to the hype.

Mail Sport’s LAWRENCE BOOTH provides the big stats from the opening day.

This was Joe Root’s first Ashes century since his 130 at Trent Bridge in 2015. In between, 31 innings against Australia had brought him 12 half-centuries, but nothing greater than 89 at Brisbane in December 2021.

Root has now scored 2,134 Test runs against Australia, and during the course of his unbeaten 118 moved past Virat Kohli, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ken Barrington in that list.

Root became the second England player, after Alastair Cook, to reach 30 Test centuries, drawing level on the all-time list with Matthew Hayden and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

His Test record at Edgbaston now reads 787 at 71. Only Cook has more runs at the venue, with 869 at almost 58.

His four sixes were his joint-most in a Test innings. He also hit four during his unbeaten 182 against West Indies at St George’s, Grenada, in April 2015.

Root and Jonny Bairstow put on 121 for England’s sixth wicket, their 11th century stand in Tests. Only three England partnerships have managed more: Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe (15), Cook and Andrew Strauss (14), and Cook and Kevin Pietersen (13).

Only once have England scored more quickly in the first innings of an Ashes Test than their run-rate of 5.03 here. That was in 2005, also at Edgbaston, when they managed 407 runs on the opening day at 5.13 an over.

England scored 54 singles in the morning session – three times the normal average for the first session of a Test match.

The last time Jimmy Anderson did not take the new ball in a home Test was in 2009 against West Indies at Lord’s, where Andrew Strauss opened the bowling with Stuart Broad and off-spinner Graeme Swann.

Bairstow and Moeen Ali became the first pair of batsmen to be out stumped on the first day of a Test in this country since Godfrey Evans stumped West Indians Clyde Walcott and Gerry Gomez off Roly Jenkins at Lord’s in 1950.

Australia selected Scott Boland ahead of Mitchell Starc partly over concern about how quickly England would score off Starc. Instead, Boland went at 6.14 an over – easily the most expensive innings of his Test career. Before yesterday, he had gone at just 2.31 an over in his eight Tests.

EXCLUSIVE: West Ham plan to turn the Olympic Park into a huge fan zone if they reach the Europa Conference League final… with thousands set to be disappointed with just 5,000 tickets available in Prague

  • West Ham hold a 2-1 lead over AZ Alkmaar going into the second-leg next week
  • The Fortuna Arena holding the final has capacity for a fraction over 20,000
  • Allocations for both of the finalists would receive around just 5,000 fans

West Ham are exploring plans to install a fan zone adjacent to the London Stadium in the event that they reach the Europa Conference League final next month.

David Moyes’s side hold a 2-1 first-leg lead in their semi-final with AZ Alkmaar but, if they make it through, thousands of supporters will be unable to make the June 7 final in Prague because of the tiny capacity at Fortuna Arena.

The ground has capacity for a fraction over 20,000, with the allocations for each of the finalists around just 5,000.

In mitigation for such a limited presence at the game, West Ham are taking the sensible step of considering options in advance for how they might mark their first European final since 1976.

Sources have indicated that will possibly include giant screens on the London 2012 warm-up track at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in the shadow of the stadium. It would be a key part of the club’s broader plans to make the site feel more of a ‘home’ to West Ham fans after the difficult move from the Boleyn Ground in 2016.

The winner of West Ham’s tie with AZ Alkmaar will face Basel or Fiorentina.

Denver Nuggets become the first team to reach the NBA Conference Finals with blowout 25-POINT win over Phoenix Suns… as Kevin Durant comes up short and Nikola Jokic shines

  • Nikola Jokic scored 32 points in another triple-double for impressive Nuggets
  • Kevin Durant was traded to Phoenix in the hope he could win them a title
  • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Nikola Jokic scored 32 points in another triple-double to help the Denver Nuggets advance to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2020 by beating the short-handed Phoenix Suns 125-100 in Game 6 on Thursday night.

Denver’s series victory comes two seasons after the Nuggets were embarrassed in a second-round postseason sweep by the Suns. This time, it was the Suns getting blown out on their home floor to end the season for the second straight year.

Kevin Durant was traded to Phoenix in February with the team hoping he could take them all the way to an NBA title, but they have now fallen short and their season is over.

The Nuggets will play in the conference finals for the first time since they lost to the eventual champion Lakers in five games in the Florida bubble during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have never reached the NBA Finals.

The top-seeded Nuggets used a 23-2 run during the latter part of the first quarter to take a 44-26 lead and never looked back. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope – averaging 9.5 points in the playoffs – scored 17 in the first quarter while Jokic added 14.

Caldwell-Pope finished with 21 points. Jokic shot 13 of 18 from the field and added 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

Denver’s offensive onslaught continued in the second as the lead grew to 81-51 by halftime, leading to boos from Suns fans as players made their way to the locker room. The second half was essentially an afterthought.

Cameron Payne scored 31 points for Phoenix, hitting 7 of 9 3-pointers. Durant added 23.

The Suns were playing without injured starters Deandre Ayton and Chris Paul. Ayton sustained a rib contusion in Tuesday’s Game 5 while Paul has been out the past four games with a strained left groin.

Phoenix was eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals at home for a second straight season despite a blockbuster trade deadline deal for Durant, a 13-time All-Star and one of the game’s most prolific scorers. The 34-year-old had some good moments in the playoffs, but made just 1 of his first 10 shots on Thursday as the Suns fell into a huge hole.

Suns guard Devin Booker was brilliant in most of the postseason, averaging 36 points per game on 60% before Game 6. But the three-time All-Star finished with just 12 points on Thursday.

The home team won the first five games of the series until the Nuggets broke through in Game 6.

For the Suns, the loss was eerily similar to Game 7 of last year’s Western Conference semifinals.

Phoenix, with the NBA’s best record, fell behind Dallas by 30 points by halftime and ended up losing 123-90 to end its season.

In the shot clock era, the home team has trailed by 30-plus points in a potential playoff elimination game just three times. Phoenix is now responsible for two of them. The other was the Bucks in 2015.
