Strictly Come Dancing’s first live show ratings drop again for a second year with the opening competition night watched by an average of 6.1M

The first live show of the new series of Strictly Come Dancing saw it’s ratings fall again with an average 6.1M tuning in on Saturday, according to overnight ratings.

This was a drop for the second year in row, after an average of 6.8M watched the launch in 2022 after the glitzy show previously drew in a whopping 7.9M in 2021.

Saturday launch saw the 15 celebs paired with their pro partners, attracting a peak of 6.7M viewers.

Last year’s launch received an average of 6.8million viewers, peaking at 7.2 million.

MailOnline have contacted the BBC for comment.

Strictly viewers already tipped who they think will win the new series after the launch saw the celebs take to the dance floor for the first time in a disco themed group routine.

And fans predicted Layton Williams would make history by becoming the show’s first ever winning same-sex pairing alongside pro Nikita Kuzmin.

It comes despite the series facing a ‘fix’ row after fans claimed the actor had an unfair advance following his West End appearances and Stage School training.

Following the performance, viewers took to Twitter in their droves with one writing:  ‘Same gender couple gonna win it this year I can feel it in my bones!!!!!’.

A second said: ‘I’ve already chosen who I think will win! That Leyton chap… mind you… it helps he’s already a dancer’.

A third wrote: ‘From the dance by all, Layton and Nikita stood out’.

And: ‘Yeah Layton Williams is gonna win this’.

With someone else branding his performance: ‘Winner vibes’.

And: ‘Yep, after that opening routine I am putting my money on Layton and Nikita’.

One fan said: ‘I fear Les Dennis is the runt of the litter’.

While another wrote: ‘Don’t completely write off Les – He’s got a background in theatre so he’ll be good at storytelling and he does show some Rhythem. It’ll be interesting to see how Nancy adapts her choreography for an older Celeb like Les’.

Hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly called her the show’s ‘Welsh Dragon’ as they dedicated the judges and professional dancers’ routine to her.

Caerphilly born Amy, 33, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in May, and began chemotherapy after doctors discovered another type of cancer in her body, meaning she was unable to be paired with a celebrity for the new series.

Ahead of the show-stopping routine Tess said: ‘We are of course, missing one of our professional dancers.

‘Our gorgeous Amy Dowden is unwell and she can’t be with us for the start of the series’.

She went on: ‘But she is our Welsh dragon and we know she will be back soon’.

Claudia then interjected saying: ‘Amy from all your Strictly family we are sending all our love and we cannot wait to have you back on the dance floor’.

With Tess adding: ‘This [dance] is for you!’.

ENGLAND PLAYER RATINGS: Kyle Walker impresses on a landmark night as he nets his FIRST England goal on his 77th cap… but Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire struggle after their controversial call-ups

England lost their winning record in Euro 2024 qualifying after a 1-1 draw to Ukraine on Saturday evening.

Oleksandr Zinchenko got the hosts off to a flying start in the first half before his former Man City teammate Kyle Walker netted an equaliser for England.

The goal was Walker’s first for his country, and it came in his 77th appearance for the national team.

With Gareth Southgate facing controversy when deciding to call up Harry Maguire, who has struggled for game time at Manchester United this season, and Jordan Henderson, the pair had a point to prove.

However, a fairly underwhelming performance followed as Mail Sport’s Sami Mokbel gives their player ratings from the showpiece.

England (4-3-3)

Jordan Pickford (Everton) 6

Had very little to do apart from pick the ball out of the net. His distribution was solid, as ever.

Kyle Walker (Man City) 7

Landmark night for the defender as he scored his first international goal on his 77th appearance. Recovery pace was key feature in defence.

Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace) 7

Looks comfortable at this level and was the pick of England’s centre-backs. Deserves more opportunities.

Harry Maguire (Manchester United) 5.5

Continues to be a key player for England but he is under big pressure to keep his place now. Looked rusty. Booked.

Ben Chilwell (Chelsea) 5.5

A more than willing runner going forward but Ukraine exploited the space behind him to good effect.

Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) 7

An off night for the wonderkid. Tried to overdo it at times when he should have kept things simple. Substituted.

Declan Rice (Arsenal) 7

Composed and driven in England’s engine room. No doubting his place now as one of England’s most important players.

Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq) 5.5

Appeared to be a yard off the pace, especially in the first half. Would have been relieved that the threat of protest against him didn’t happen.

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) 6.5

A quiet opening 45 minutes when his movement appeared restricted following a heavy challenge but burst into life after the break.

Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) 7

What. A. Pass. Ukraine just stood off the England captain – and he took full advantage with an unerring ball to set-up Walker’s leveller.

James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur) 6

Another start for the Tottenham attacker but couldn’t fully grasp his opportunity before being substituted. Booked.

His team stuttered here but he’ll have been encouraged by the character after falling behind. England won’t win the Euros by playing like this, though.

Arsenal kept up otherwise fading hopes of winning the Premier League title after crushing Chelsea in a London derby.

In what looked like a tricky game on paper, the Gunners never gave their rivals a chance following a dominant display that saw them power to a 3-1 victory and go two points clear of Manchester City at the summit – albeit having played two games extra.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring early on before adding another on the half-hour mark.

The skipper’s second goal was followed three minutes later by a Gabriel Jesus effort to make it 3-0 and job done for the north London side before Noni Madueke struck a consolation goal in the second half.

Here though Mail Sport looks at how both sides fared at the Emirates Stadium.

ARSENAL (4-3-3)

Aaron Ramsdale 7

Didn’t have too much to do – but made a superb stop to deny Ben Chilwell in the first period before his back four largely gave him a ‘night off’.

Ben White – 5.5

Didn’t look too comfortable at right-back but Chelsea were never really at the races to take advantage of his off-colour display

Jakub Kiwior – 6.5

Nervous first few minutes saw him miss a header but he soon settled and justified his surprise team selection on his first Premier League start

Jakub Kiwior (right) was a surprise inclusion in the defence but justified his inclusion

Gabriel Magalhaes – 6.5

Seemed to spend most of the game going down and needing treatment for an injury. Crucial when he’s fit though and it will be a concern how he eventually had to trudge off late in the game.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 6

Overloading from the left, the Ukraine left-back played his part in attack but was caught too advanced for Chelsea’s consolation strike.

Martin Odegaard – 8.5

A brilliant attacking display. Took both of his goals superbly in a rampant opening half-hour for Arsenal to produce a captain’s performance when his side needed it most.

Jorginho – 7

Given a start against his former club and didn’t disappoint. Retained and recycled possession effectively and didn’t put a single foot wrong.

Granit Xhaka – 7.5

Ended the night with two assists for Odegaard – the first being a very clever low ball into the box. Alert throughout and unlucky not to score with a couple of half-chances.

Bukayo Saka – 7

Not involved with the goals but still a crucial cog in this Arsenal attack. A headache for the Chelsea defenders from the off and the Blues would have been delighted to see the back of him when he was taken off late on.

Gabriel Jesus – 7.5

Effectively ended the game when he fired home the third goal in the 34th minute. Did little afterwards but the Gunners had pulled the handbrake by then.

Gabriel Jesus was also on the scoresheet for the Gunners who kept their title hopes alive

Leandro Trossard – 7

Effective on the flank and ensured no shortage of problems for Chelsea before he was given the rest of the night off before the hour mark.

Subs:

Kieran Tierney – 6

A late replacement for Zinchenko and plugged any potential gap Chelsea could exploit down their right side.

Reiss Nelson – 6

Given a run-out so Saka could put his feet up, yet looked busy and to was involved in a late penalty shout to win a spot-kick in a call that went against him.

Gabriel Martinelli 6.5

Thrown on to try and build his confidence back up but the Brazilian striker had little to go on with the game already won.

CHELSEA (4-3-3)

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 5

Saved his side’s blushes early on with a save but then never had a command over his hapless defence or penalty box in general and was left beaten at corners

Cesar Azpilicueta – 5

A bad night or signs of ageing legs? Poor header back saw him fortunate not to gift Arsenal an early goal before he then made a couple of late poor challenges.

Wesley Fofana – 5

Struggled all evening, and eventually had to depart with a minor injury having done little to limit Arsenal’s constant attacks.

Thiago Silva – 6

Still performing to a ridiculous high standard at 38 and was Chelsea’s most effective defender, clearing a shot off the line in the second half from point blank range.

Thiago Silva was one of Chelsea's better players on a poor night for the Blues in north London

Thiago Silva was one of Chelsea’s better players on a poor night for the Blues in north London

Ben Chilwell – 6

Forced a smart save from Ramsdale in the first half after a driving run forward but that’s about as good as it got for the left-back.

N’Golo Kante – 6

Wasted a good counter attack for the Blues by choosing the wrong pass after a surge down the centre. Doesn’t seem the player he once was in what has become a chaotic Chelsea side.

Enzo Fernandez – 5.5

Still waiting to see the performances that made him a World Cup star, and he was largely a bystander as Arsenal passed the ball around him at the Emirates.

Mateo Kovacic – 6.5

Not a difficult evening to be Chelsea’s best midfielder but the Croatian takes the ‘honour’ thanks to an excellent sprayed pass to pick out Madueke for the Blues’ consolation strike.

Noni Madueke – 6.5

Not a great night for the most part, especially after his cut-back from the byline failed to find a team-mate. Did though make amends with his first Premier League goal.

Noni Madueke (right) struck his first Premier League goal on a mixed evening for the forward

Noni Madueke (right) struck his first Premier League goal on a mixed evening for the forward

Raheem Sterling – 6

Like Aubameyang, his night just never got going and he never looked like causing any threat to the Gunners defence before being substituted.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 4

An utterly miserable evening. Nine touches and even four of those were from kick-off against his former side before being hooked at the break.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang never looked like threatening before being replaced at half-time

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang never looked like threatening before being replaced at half-time

Subs:

Mykhailo Mudryk – 6.5

Given 19 minutes to silence the boo boys having turned down Arsenal to move to Chelsea in January, and it’s fair to say the Gunners won’t be too down about ‘having to settle for Trossard’ instead.

Kai Havertz – 6

Came on at half-time for Aubameyang and in another night playing out of position as a lone frontman hardly had a sniff at goal. Not his fault, but never looked like changing the game or troubling the Gunners.

Conor Gallagher – 6

Came on soon after Madueke pulled a goal back but seemed to only bring stability to limit any more Arsenal damage rather than act as a game changing spark.
