Australian radio host Jase Hawkins has revealed some odd moments he experienced with embattled comedian Russell Brand.

On Monday’s episode of KIIS 101.1’s Jase & Lauren, he detailed his memories when Brand was visiting Australia to promote his film, Get Him To The Greek.

Jase recounted how he was hosting the red carpet chat and afterparty at the time, but the British comedian didn’t turn up.

‘He never rocked up at the after parties. Jonah Hill had to do it… The next day we were working at another radio station 2DAY FM in Sydney and Kyle and [Jackie O] were doing breakfast and he [Brand] rocked up… For the interview.’

Jase then described how Russell engaged with the staff when he got to the studio.

‘He sort of mozzied in and flirted a lot with the girls in the office. My wife was working there at the time. She was in the little kitchenette was making breakfast and popped in and was very, very flirtatious,’ Jase said.

‘He would come in and give them little compliments but in that Russel Brand style. Not handsy.’

The breakfast radio host then told a story about the UK comedian locking himself in the office bathrooms.

According to Jase, Brand was in the bathroom for 20 minutes, posted his bodyguard outside the door to block anyone from going in, and missed his interview on the air.

‘He eventually came out [of the bathroom]. He looked off his dial. This was the point that he said he was off booze and drugs, but it just didn’t not seem legit. I’m not saying guilty or innocent,’ the radio host said.

‘[The women that he flirted with] they laughed it off. That’s what I was saying to Lou [my wife] last night, we were talking about that… Everyone got caught up in this whole Russell Brand thing.’

Two weeks ago, Brand was accused anonymously by multiple women of serious allegations, including rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse.

The comedian has denied the allegations on his popular YouTube channel, saying his relationships were ‘always consensual.’

The rest of Brand’s ongoing tour in the UK has been delayed, and his sponsors have chosen to distance themselves from him.

Both the BBC and Channel 4 have removed content featuring the comedian from their streaming platforms.

The video platform YouTube has taken action against Brand’s channels, preventing them from earning revenue through advertisements due to a claimed violation of its ‘creator responsibility policy.’

YouTube stated that this suspension of monetisation applies to Brand’s account, which boasts 6.6 million subscribers, and is a result of ‘serious allegations against the creator.’

The Google-owned video service clarified that this decision extends to all channels associated with or run by Russell Brand.

In recent years, Brand has developed a large online following creating videos offering alternative views on media bias, Covid lockdowns, as well as corporate and governmental abuses of power.

Four women have levelled accusations of sexual assault against Brand, spanning from 2006 to 2013, and a fifth individual later came forward with a claim dating back to 2003.

None of Brand’s accusers have so far been publicly identified.

Sunrise star David ‘Kochie’ Koch makes a shock joke about doing cocaine during live radio interview: ‘With a nose like mine’

David ‘Kochie’ Koch stunned listeners of The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Tuesday when he made a shock joke about taking cocaine.

The veteran TV host, 67, was a guest on the breakfast show and co-host Kyle Sandilands, 52, asked him a pointed question about illicit drug use.

‘How long has it been since you have done a couple of lines Kochie, in all honesty?’ Kyle asked.

Kochie joked that large size of his nose prevented him from doing it.

‘With a nose like mine, if I did it then it would send me broke,’ Kochie shot back.

The pair appeared to be referring to Karl Stefanovic’s notorious joke about Kochie last month’s Logies ceremony, where he joked about his breakfast TV rival’s alleged cocaine usage.

Stefanovic came under after the the bizarre gag and Kochie hit back at the Today show host when he made a return to Sunrise and The Morning Show last week to announce his new role as Economic Director at Compare the Market.

While Kochie sang the praises of Logies host Sam Pang, he said he was less than impressed with Karl’s ad-libbed gag.

‘He (Sam) did such a great job and the gags were really good. Sam is really clever because he never makes them vicious or personal. A bit different to Karl’s sense of humour,’ he told Matt Doran and Kylie Gillies.

Karl’s cocaine joke at the Logies left the audience – and Kochie himself – more bewildered than entertained.

He made the gag after Kochie confessed his fondness for the third season of Stan series Bump while presenting on stage.

Seizing the moment, Karl, 48, took a comedic leap, playing on the double entendre of ‘bump,’ a term colloquially associated with cocaine.

'How long has it been since you have done a couple of lines Kochie, in all honesty?' Kyle asked. Kochie joked that large size of his nose prevented him from doing it

‘I did want to just check something… I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bumps… season three. Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did.’

‘Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning…’ Karl remarked, hoping for a laugh.

However, his risky attempt at humour seemed to miss the mark, with audience members not reacting the way he’d hoped.

A camera cut to a bewildered Kochie only added to the cringeworthy moment.

Helen Skelton has broadcast her final show for BBC Radio 5 Live after a year in her Sunday morning slot.

The TV and radio star, who has allegedly come under fire from bosses for plugging brands during her time working for the BBC, bid an emotional farewell to listeners on Sunday as she explained she wanted to spend more of her weekend with her children.

Talking to her co-presenter Lloyd Griffith, Helen, with her voice breaking said: ‘I am not alright about it but needs must. The juggle is real.’

The star, who split from the father of her children last year, added that she wanted to be around to see her children at their weekend sports fixtures, telling listeners that ‘there is an eight-year-old with a sideline who needs me’.

Later, as she ended her show Helen said she has ‘loved every minute of the past year … thank you to all the team and thank you to all of you. Its hard to know what to say without getting emotional!’

Moving on: Helen Skelton has broadcast her final show for Radio Five Live after a year in her Sunday morning slot.

Family: The star bid an emotional farewell to listeners on Sunday as she explained she wanted to spend more of her weekend with her children-  Ernie, eight, Louis, five, and 16-month-old daughter Elsie

Helen is a mum of three, sharing her children – Ernie, eight, Louis, five, and 16-month-old daughter Elsie – with ex husband Richie Myler.

The television presenter, 40, announced her split from England and Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Richie, 33, in April last year.

Helen took over from Laura Whitmore on her BBC Radio Sunday show last August.

It was reported this month that Helen has allegedly come under fire from BBC bosses after plugging brands during her time working on TV show Morning Live.

The television presenter has gone against the strict guidelines of the broadcasting corporation by tagging the brands of clothing, jewellery and cake makers in her Instagram posts.

Guidelines state that ‘no on-air talent should promote products, goods, services or clothing they use’.

The BBC, which is funded by the license fee, does not allow advertising or product placements on its television or radio outputs, or on its websites.

Helen has since removed the tags and did not receive payment for naming the brands on her social media channel.

A BBC spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Helen pays for the clothes she wears on the show and does not have relationships with the brands tagged.

‘She has now removed brand mentions from social posts linked to the programme.’

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Helen for comment.

Meanwhile, Helen has recently launched herself back into the dating scene.

A source told Closer Magazine: ‘Helen’s family and friends encouraged her to get back out there and she was happy to dip her toe back into the dating scene, but she has had some wobbles and found herself feeling guilty. She’s concerned about who to let into her life and worried about being judged for any decisions she makes.

‘There have also been some people who have made comments about her not trying hard enough to make it work with Richie, and it’s made her think about her marriage and what went wrong.

‘Ultimately, she knows she tried everything she could, and once the trust was broken there was just no going back. But dating again has brought up some unexpected feelings that she’s been struggling with.’

It comes after source told OK! magazine: ‘After her trust was broken, she’s nowhere near ready for an all-in long-term romance.

‘But she’s not closing herself off to anything anymore. She’s open to new adventures in all respects and is making it her aim to say ‘yes’ to more things that excite her.’

MailOnline has contacted Helen’s representative for comment.

Helen is also moving on from Richie by putting the marital home they once shared on the market.

A source told The Mirror : ‘Helen has moved on with her life and feels it’s time to start with a clean slate.

‘She’s put the house they shared on the market and is looking for a new place she can move to with the kids in the coming months.’

Since his split from Helen, Richie has gone on to have a baby with new girlfriend Stephanie Thirkill, 32, the daughter of Leeds Rhinos president Andrew.

The Washington Commanders have banned two local sports radio personalities from attending the team’s preseason training camp after they made sexists comments on their show earlier this week.

Don Geronimo and Crash Young, who are both employed by WBIG-FM in Washington D.C., cat-called Sharla McBride – a WUSA9 reporter in America’s capital – while live on air as she was nearby.

‘Hey look, Barbie’s here,’ Geronimo said about McBride. ‘Hi, Barbie girl. I’m guessing she is a cheerleader.’

When he spotted McBride again later in the broadcast, Geronimo turned towards Young, telling him: ‘Oh hey, there’s that chick that you thought said tight.’

It’s unclear what ‘tight’ means in this particular context.

‘Yeah, I screamed tight when she was,’ replied Young before being interrupted.

Geronimo later re-iterated: ‘I thought she was a cheerleader.’

On Friday, no personnel of WBIG-FM was seen in the radio station’s outdoor tent, and the team will further look into how to proceed forward from the incident.

The Commanders are locked in a three-year partnership deal with iHeartMedia – WBIG-FM’s parent company – since 2022.

Employees of the NFL franchise have previously been accused of promoting a culture of sexism and misogyny under previous owner Dan Snyder, who sold his majority share to an ownership group led by Josh Harris and Magic Johnson.

The team condemned the incident in a statement shared with WUSA9.

Sharla McBride, of D.C. TV outlet WUSA9, said she was ‘hurt’ and ‘offended’ by the remarks

‘We have worked hard to ensure that everyone feels safe and respected in our workplace, and we took swift action when we learned that an employee of our partner iHeart made sexually disparaging remarks to and about a member of the media while she was broadcasting live from training camp yesterday,’ said the Commanders.

‘iHeart and the individual were not permitted to broadcast from Training Camp today, and we will continue to work collaboratively with iHeart to address the issue and trust that iHeart will take appropriate action as it works through an internal investigation.’

McBride revealed that was ‘hurt’ and ‘offended’ by the remarks, which she deemed as ‘inappropriate, unprofessional and embarrassing,’ according to WUSA9.

The TV network was also quick to denounce the incident.

‘Objectifying women is harmful and disrespectful,’ said WUSA9 General Manager Richard Dyer. ‘We’ve heard from the Washington Commanders that they are addressing the situation directly with iHeartRadio.

‘Promoting respect, empathy and equal treatment for all individuals, regardless of gender, is crucial for building respect in any workplace.’

WHAT BOOK would radio presenter and author Simon Mayo take to a desert island?

. . . Are you reading now?

All The Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby. This is probably my favourite book this year. Set in Charon County, Virginia, in the U.S., Titus Crown is Charon’s first black sheriff.

A year to the day after his election, a school teacher is shot by one of his former students. The student is then shot by Titus’s deputies. But this book isn’t about school shootings, it is much, much darker than that. As Titus investigates, he realises he is fighting a serial killer and the county’s bloody history. The American civil war, confederate statues and crazy church folk are all in his way.

You’ll be appalled of course, but Titus carries you through. I loved it.

. . . would you take to a desert island?

This of course is a trick question. If I took a favourite book, I would quickly tire of it. If I took an untried book, I might hate it after a chapter and what a waste that would be. So if I’m on this desert island for a long time, I would like a book I could turn to over and over again. So my only choice is to go for the Oxford Dictionary of Etymology. And not the concise version. When I am rescued, I can be the new host for Countdown.

English radio presenter and author Simon Mayo (pictured in May 2022) is currently reading All The Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby

. . . first gave you the reading bug?

That award goes to Willard Price’s Adventure series, starring teenagers Hal and Roger Hunt.

These two (probably very entitled) young chaps travel the world collecting a fabulous array of animals for their father’s zoo. No creature too dangerous, too exotic, or too endangered. While it is true that some of these stories may not have aged well, the thrill of a page-turning novel with danger, heroes and villains is a treasure to be valued.

. . .left you cold?

I really didn’t get on with Lord Of The Rings until the wonderful movies — then it all made sense. I was supposed to like it. But I didn’t. ‘It wins all the readers’ polls.’ Well, no one asked me. ‘It has trolls and dwarves and elves.’ But that’s exactly my point.

Thanks but no thanks J. R. R. Tolkien.

Tick Tock by Simon Mayo is out now in paperback (£8.99, Transworld).

NRL Immortal Andrew Johns has dramatically quit the SEN radio network as the fallout from his on-air feud with brother Matthew Johns continues to fester.

The footy siblings – who often don’t see eye to eye – have failed to patch up their differences following a heated on-air debate ahead of the State of Origin series opener last month.

Fox Sports identity Matthew Johns, who hosts the Morning Glory program each Friday, praised the coaching abilities of Queensland mentor Billy Slater, which got under his younger brother’s skin.

Andrew Johns is also a member of the NSW Blues coaching staff.

SEN station boss Craig Hutchison was confident the siblings would soon be on the same page – possibly once the Origin series is finished – but it is believed a fired up Andrew Johns has declared he won’t be back on the airwaves in 2023.

The footy siblings – who often don’t see eye to eye – have failed to patch up their differences following a rigorous on-air debate ahead of the State of Origin series opener on May 31 (Matthew Johns is pictured with wife Trish)

On June 9 – for the second successive week – Andrew failed to show at SEN’s Walker St studios in North Sydney.

Matthew Johns stated in the lead up ‘I’m just going to leave the studio door open,’ and if ‘he walks through the doors at one minute to nine then he does, if he doesn’t we will just have to make do.’

Johns and respected sports journalist Andrew Webster then failed to address the elephant in the room.

Matthew’s comments on Slater incensed young brother Andrew, who is as passionate as they come when it comes to the Blues.

‘Mate, I’m sick of you rapping Queensland, that’s what I’m sick of,’ Andrew, who is widely regarded as the Blues’ best ever player, fumed on live radio last month.

‘Put your Maroon jersey on, you should have some at home.

‘Just because you played four games and lost all four doesn’t mean you need to s**t bag NSW.’

Matty Johns’ recent comments on Queensland’s ability to own big moments in Origin and the rise of Billy Slater as Maroons head coach infuriated his younger brother Andrew (pictured)

Earlier this month, Matthew Johns confirmed the former NSW Blues halfback still wasn’t prepared to smoke the peace pipe.

‘Houston we have a problem, it’s official my brother is completely off me,’ Matty told listeners.

‘There were rumours he might not come. I thought the last three weeks of him not returning phone calls was laziness.

‘He is off me. This is nothing new for me and Joey (Andrew). We were forced to share a bedroom for 19 years.

‘We’ve had a fill of each other. Every six months we have a blue like this.’

While Matthew’s Origin career was relatively short, his brother played 23 times for the Blues, including a legendary man-of-the-match performance in Game Two of the 2005 series.

The pair have often clashed over the years, with most of their run-ins good natured.

Last July, Matthew used a radio debate about State of Origin as an opportunity to take a savage swipe at his brother over his love life.

The NSW side is known for dropping stars from their team with regularity – often when fans think they don’t deserve to be shown the door – whereas Queensland are regarded as showing more loyalty to their players.

Matty used Andrew – who is in his third long-term relationship – to sum up the Blues’ selection process.

‘It’s very NSW. I want people to know….be extremely concerned. Don’t marry anyone from NSW because we fall in love with new acquaintances very easily,’ he said on SEN.

‘What you do, is you just get rid of them. Just bring someone else in.

‘I mean, the best example is our best ever player, Andrew Johns, I think he’s onto his third wife.’

Mysterious radio signals have been a hot topic in astronomy ever since their discovery hinted that aliens might be trying to contact Earth.

These oddly bright flashes of light, registering in the radio band of the electromagnetic spectrum, appear temporarily and randomly from space.

Known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), they were first detected just 15 years ago but scientists have never known where they originate from.

Now, an international team of experts has made a breakthrough that could finally offer clues to the source.

They say one such FRB known as 20190520B likely originates from a binary system on the outskirts of a metal-poor dwarf galaxy nearly 3 billion light-years from Earth.

It is unclear exactly what is the source – raising the prospect that extraterrestrial life might be responsible – but it appears to be coming from a ‘compact object’ which is next to a massive star with strong stellar winds.

Scientists involved in the new study said the object could be a black hole or highly magnetised neutron star – known as a magnetar – although neither theory quite fits ‘when considering all the data’.

They came to their conclusion after discovering that the FRB twice changed its signal in dramatic fashion while they were analysing it.

The only explanation for this, the experts said, is that the magnetic fields surrounding it must have been reversed or twisted by a ‘turbulent’ force.

They believe that to have produced something ‘as messy as a ball of wool’ the signal must have passed through ‘the dense and variable stellar wind of a companion star’ relatively close to its source.

Some FRBs seem to be one-off events, which is why a catastrophic explosion such as an extreme supernova was thought to be a possible explanation for them.

But less than 5 per cent of the hundreds spotted have been seen to repeat, occasionally on a regular pattern.

FRB 20190520B was the first persistently active repeating FRB ever discovered.

It was the focus of the new study and was analysed by researchers at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) and West Virginia University using the Parkes Telescope in Australia and the Green Bank Telescope in the US.

In their paper the scientists said they had discovered ‘turbulent magnetic fields surrounding the repeating FRB’.

‘This observation suggests that the pulses of radio wave emission may come from a compact object accompanied by a binary companion with strong stellar winds,’ they added.

The researchers claimed that a neutron star or black hole might be the source as both had previously been found in binary systems with companions that have massive stellar winds.

One such example is SS433, which is associated with a supernova-like radio nebula, W50.

However, when pouring over all the data they said neither theory quite fits, meaning more research is needed.

Dr Li Di and his team from the NAOC now want to learn more about the magnetised environment surrounding FRBs in the hope of taking another step forward in their understanding of where exactly these signals come from.

FRBs – described as ‘brief and mysterious beacons’ – have been spotted in various and distant parts of the universe, as well as in our own galaxy.

Not only are their origins are unknown but their appearance is also unpredictable.

Previous observations strongly suggest that repeaters and one-offs arise from separate mechanisms and astrophysical sources.

As radio waves travel across space, any interstellar gas or plasma along the way can distort or disperse the wave’s properties and trajectory.

The degree to which a radio wave is dispersed can give clues to how much gas it has passed through, and possibly how much distance it has travelled from its source.

Most of the bursts flare just once and are then never seen again – making them impossible to predict, according to astronomers.

Some show repeat activity, but until recently that was found to be completely random.

The presence of a regular sequence in the burst activity could imply that the powerful bursts are linked to large-scale cosmic phenomenon.

These could include the orbital motion of a massive star, a neutron star in a binary system or a black hole.

The new study has been published in the journal Science.

FAST RADIO BURSTS ARE BRIEF RADIO EMISSIONS FROM SPACE WHOSE ORIGIN IS UNKNOWN

Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are radio emissions that appear temporarily and randomly, making them not only hard to find, but also hard to study.

The mystery stems from the fact it is not known what could produce such a short and sharp burst.

This has led some to speculate they could be anything from stars colliding to artificially created messages.

The first FRB was spotted, or rather ‘heard’ by radio telescopes, back in 2001 but wasn’t discovered until 2007 when scientists were analysing archival data.

But it was so temporary and seemingly random that it took years for astronomers to agree it wasn’t a glitch in one of the telescope’s instruments.

Researchers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics point out that FRBs can be used to study the structure and evolution of the universe whether or not their origin is fully understood.

A large population of faraway FRBs could act as probes of material across gigantic distances.

This intervening material blurs the signal from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the left over radiation from the Big Bang.

A careful study of this intervening material should give an improved understanding of basic cosmic constituents, such as the relative amounts of ordinary matter, dark matter and dark energy, which affect how rapidly the universe is expanding.

FRBs can also be used to trace what broke down the ‘fog’ of hydrogen atoms that pervaded the early universe into free electrons and protons, when temperatures cooled down after the Big Bang.
