Caprice Bourret commanded attention in a huge grey gown as she stepped onto the red carpet at the Who Cares Wins awards at The Roundhouse, London on Tuesday.

The model, 51, put on a very busty display in the daring dress which boasted a plunging mesh neckline.

The backless garment also boasted a bold ruffled mesh skirt, which cascaded behind her as she posed up a storm for photos.

She styled her long blonde tresses in loose waves and applied a flawless palette of makeup to accentuate her beauty.

Beaming for cameras, Caprice flashed her sideboob as she went braless in the head turning outfit.

The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards honours those across the health and social care sector who go above and beyond for their patients or causes.

The event has returned to Channel 4 with Davina McCall again hosting the awards and the star-studded, red-carpet ceremony taking place in London.

Channel 4 has partnered with The Sun and NHS Charities Together to televise the awards ceremony for the third year running.

The awards were originally set up in 2017 as a celebration of the NHS and healthcare healthcare professionals, key workers and ordinary people who care for us.

Davina McCall said: ‘I’m enormously proud to host these awards, which recognise some of the most amazing people on the planet. It’s a privilege to meet these everyday heroes and celebrate their truly inspirational stories.’

Commissioning editor for Channel 4 Tom Beck said: ‘We’re thrilled to be broadcasting The Sun’s Who Cares Win awards for the second year, bringing the amazing and inspiring stories of the nominees and winners to Channel 4 viewers.’

This year’s awards were launched back in June by boxing legend Anthony Joshua as one of the many celebrations to mark the NHS turning 75.

The sportsman urged people to get nominating as he said: ‘It’s my pleasure to launch this year’s awards. It was truly humbling at last year’s ceremony to hear the incredible stories of heroism that play out across the UK.

‘I was blown away by the people I met. To me, they are the real stars. Our health heroes are true fighters. The past few years have been incredibly hard for those working on the frontline. They’ve steered us through the coronavirus pandemic while continuing to try to maintain all other services.

‘Our NHS is made up of people from all different backgrounds who come together to selflessly help others. They put the great into Great Britain. They don’t do it for the money or for the thanks. They are not the sort to put themselves in the spotlight, so this is why The Sun needs you to nominate your healthcare hero.’

Anna Wintour puts on a united display with Edward Enninful on the red carpet after reports of a ‘power struggle’ between editors as she draws in the stars for her Vogue World Show

Dame Anna Wintour gathered some of the biggest names in showbusiness for the Vogue World Show  in Londonon Thursday.

From supermodels Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington to Hollywood’s Jared Leto and Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, the event, held to raise funds for Britain’s performing arts industry, rivalled New York’s iconic Met Gala.

Vogue’s Editor-In-Chief, 73, hit the red carpet alongside British Vogue’s own editor, Edward Enninful, 51, with the pair seemingly keen to dismiss reports of a power struggle between the two

The pair put on a united front as they posed for photos together and chatted to presenter AJ Odudu inside the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Anna showed off her fashion style status in a floral gown and gold leather trench coat as she joined Enninful and director Baz Luhrmann on the red carpet.

Enninful is due to be replaced by Londoner Chioma Nnadi as editor of British Vogue.

The Mail on Sunday reported Enninful had hoped one day to replace Wintour, but the Vogue Editor-In-Chief is determined to stay put and will ‘swat any rivals off like a fly’.

The bash comes just three months after the shock announcement the British-Ghanaian former model and fashion stylist is to step down as editor-in-chief of British Vogue after six years at the helm.

When he leaves at the beginning of 2024, Enninful will take up a ‘global advisory position’ at Vogue, ‘with the freedom to take on broader creative projects’.

‘He made no secret of wanting the big job [global editorial director] but he hit the glass ceiling and he’d gone as far as he could go,’ explained the Vogue insider.

‘He thought he would be in London for a few years and then head for New York, but he now knows that he’s never going to get Anna’s job at Condé Nast.

‘Anna is the undisputed boss. She has seen off many rivals and continues to do so. She could swat him like a fly.’

A fashion source put it more bluntly: ‘I think Edward underestimated her power. He had so much smoke blown up his a**e when he was appointed editor that he couldn’t see his own trousers.’

The event is the brainchild of Vogue’s editor-in-chief but viewers, who watched via the YouTube livestream, took to social media to admit they left baffled by the ‘bizarre’ show.

The event was accessible only to the rich and famous with one ticket costing up to £2,521.70. Outside, a queue more than 500ft long filled with clamouring guests snaked its way through London’s West End.

Echoing the splendours of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, on arrival guests were invited to wrap themselves in a Coach pashmina and enjoy a complimentary tequila from the bar.

AJ Odudu put on a very glamorous display as she joined Ellie Goulding at the Lumule Foundation x Amal Jewellery Collection launch in London on Tuesday.

The new Big Brother host, 35, showed off her incredible figure in a daring ensemble as she joined the singer, 36, at The House Of KOKO.

She cut an elegant figure in a head-turning black cut-out gown with a daring side split and gold satin sleeves.

AJ gave herself a few extra inches in a pair of glitzy pointed heels and accessorised her gorgeous ensemble with gold hoop earrings.

She was all smiles as she posed up a storm at the event, which comes ahead of the hotly-anticipated Big Brother reboot, which AJ will co-host with Will Best.

Elsewhere at the event, Ellie looked as trendy as ever in a pair of faux leather trousers and a gold patterned velvet top.

She completed her stylish ensemble with a pair of cowboy boots and added a touch of glitz with a pair of silver droplet earrings.

Her latest outing comes after the Mail revealed that Ellie ended her close friendship with Zac Goldsmith to focus on her marriage.

The pair had formed a bond after they both split from their partners – and Lord Goldsmith even began making a sculpture for the star

But it was then revealed that Ellie wants to concentrate on her marriage with art dealer Caspar Jopling, 31, who she shares her son Arthur, two, with.

A close friend of Lord Goldsmith said the Tory peer had a relationship with pop star Ellie.

The source added: ‘It happened independently of matrimonial issues on both sides, and is now categorically over.

‘The relationship had nothing to do with the breakdown of either marriage, but Ellie wants to fix her marriage for the sake of their son and Zac is fully concentrating on his environmental work.’

Ellie’s management had repeatedly denied she and Lord Goldsmith were together, or that they had spoken outside of the work they do together on the environment.

However, they were said to have developed a good friendship after first meeting at the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow.

Seven months later, they were spotted enjoying a lunch together at upmarket cafe The Garden in Covent Garden.

In October, they went to the same party at the exclusive 5 Hertford Street private members’ club, owned by Lord Goldsmith’s half-brother Robin Birley, and recently they were seen close to the Tory peer’s new west London home, which he moved into following his separation from his second wife Alice Rothschild.

Lord Goldsmith was previously married to fellow environmentalist Sheherazade Bentley, but they split in 2010.

Disgusting moment plane passenger sitting behind a woman puts his ‘smelly and dirty’ feet on her arm rest during flight

  • Pornpreeya Keng, 27, boarded a flight from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City
  • As she settled in her seat to enjoy the view, an offensive odour suddenly arose

This is the disgusting moment a plane passenger sitting behind a woman puts his ‘smelly and dirty’ feet on her arm rest during a flight.

Pornpreeya Keng, 27, boarded a low-cost Vietnam Airlines flight from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport for a trip to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

But as she settled in her seat to enjoy the view out of the window, an offensive odour suddenly irritated her nose. When she looked down, she saw the source of the repulsive smell. A man’s bare foot was poking through the gap and propped up on her armrest.

Footage from onboard the Airbus A320 shows a visibly disturbed Keng recording the scene while sitting next to the man’s hot sweaty feet.

She can be seen muttering to herself and covering her nose and mouth while glancing over at the unwashed feet before using a nasal spray to block out the smell.

Keng said the inconsiderate passenger kept moving around to find a better sleeping position, causing the smell to intensify and make her dizzy.

She said: ‘I tried to shift in my seat to make him aware of my discomfort, but he didn’t notice me. I felt uncomfortable, but I did not want to confront him directly, so I took a video of his poor manners.’

Keng later called the attention of an air hostess, who instructed the man to take off his feet on her behalf.

Keng disinfected the armrest afterwards with an alcohol wipe

She also used nasal spray to block out the smell

Keng disinfected the armrest afterwards with an alcohol wipe and also used nasal spray to block out the smell

She then disinfected her armrest with some wet wipes and used a menthol nasal inhaler to clear her sinuses of the stomach-turning feet odour.

Speaking of the nightmare flight, which took place on Saturday, she said: ‘Everyone should educate themselves on proper flight etiquette. If anyone experiences what I did, inform the flight attendant and ask for help.’

Plane passengers in the early days of aviation would never have experienced such a problem as many airlines had strict dress codes, meaning that shoes had to stay firmly on.

In the 1950s, Pan American World Airways, known as Pan Am, ordered male passengers to wear suits and ties, while women were expected to wear skirts and blouses. Shorts, jeans, and T-shirts were not considered appropriate attire for a plane and hair was also required to be neat and tidy.

Dress codes gradually began to loosen over the years, and in the 21st century it is not unusual to find backpackers dressed in shorts and vests on planes – sometimes putting their bare feet up on the seats.

Keng can be seen expressing her disgust at the odour of the feet

Vladimir Putin today put the world’s most powerful Armageddon nuclear rocket dubbed Satan-2 on combat duty.

The ‘unstoppable’ 15,880mph intercontinental missile system, known to Russians as Sarmat, is the size of a 14-storey tower block.

The announcement came from Yury Borisov, head of the Russian Space Agency.

‘The Sarmat strategic complex has been put on combat duty,’ he told students at an educational event.

He gave no further details.

In June the Russian leader threatened the West with his new Satan-II big-beast 208-ton nuclear apocalypse rocket while speaking to military graduates in the Grand Kremlin Palace

The 208-ton missile had been due to go on duty at the end of last year but was mysteriously delayed.

Russian propagandists have boasted one strike could sink Britain under the sea.

The move comes as Russia is smarting from setbacks in the war in Ukraine, as Kyiv gains ground and subjects Putin’s territory to increasing drone attacks.

Yet its deployment – if the move is for real – comes after only one proven test launch.

Others were forecast but not announced.

It also comes soon after the Russian Space Agency faced international humiliation over its failed moon mission last month.

Nine months ago Putin threatened: ‘In the near future, Sarmat ICBMs will be put on combat duty for the first time.

‘We know there will be a certain delay in time but this does not change our plans – everything will be done.’

In June he boasted: ‘In the nearest future the first launch pads of Sarmat [Satan-2] with a new heavy missile will be put on combat duty…’

The Armageddon weapon can be loaded with multiple nuclear warheads.

Putin TV propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov – also deputy head of the company running state run Rossiya 1 channel – threatened Britain in revenge for a comment then premier Boris Johnson never made about striking Russia with a nuclear attack.

Downing Street dismissed the claim – widely repeated in Russia’ state media – as ‘another example of disinformation peddled by the Kremlin’, but it continues to be trumpeted in Moscow.

Putin’s ‘propagandist-in-chief’ Dmitry Kiselyov previously threatened to drown Britain twice in a radioactive tidal wave using Satan-2 missile

‘The island is so small that one Sarmat missile is enough to drown it once and for all,’ said Kiselyov.

‘Russian missile Sarmat [Satan-2], the world most powerful…is capable of … destroying an area the size of Texas or England.

‘A single launch, Boris, and there is no England anymore.

‘Once and for all.’

The first and only known full-scale test of Satan-2 was announced to great fanfare as soon as it took place on April 20, 2022, with Putin in touch by video-link.

The silo-based Satan-2 launch was from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome.

The following month, former head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin, seen as a close Putin ally, said almost 50 Satan-2 missiles, which were in mass production, would soon be on combat duty.

In early June, a major ICBM test was scheduled and locals near the Kura test range were warned to stay clear of the target site in remote Kamchatka.

But this test never happened.

Russian propagandists have boasted one strike could sink Britain

Russian propagandists have boasted one strike could sink Britain

On 25 June last year Rogozin boasted: ‘We are absolutely on schedule, we are now preparing for the second flight test of the Sarmat.’

The following month Rogozin was fired for unknown reasons with his promised new job yet to arrive.

His successor, ex-deputy premier Borisov, in July 2022 repeated the claim that the missile is in mass production without reiterating Putin’s goal of Satan-2 being on combat duty by December of last year.

Defence analysts suspecting hypersonic hyperbole pointed out that Russia’s R-36M2 Voevoda missile was tested no less than 17 times before it was put on combat duty.

Some experts will doubt the reality of today’s announcement.

Another missile – RT-2PM Topol – was tested a dozen times before deployment.

‘In this context, the truth of the terms bandied about by Rogozin — that Sarmat is in [serial] production and is soon to be placed on ‘combat duty’ — appear dubious,’ defence expert Leonid Nersisyan has said.

‘It is far likelier that Sarmat will undergo the same testing, prototyping and experimentation programme as its predecessors,’ he wrote in Shephard Media.

Russia takes its hypersonic Satan-2 [Sarmat] missile into a forest ahead of 'new tests' amid acute tension with the West

Russia takes its hypersonic Satan-2 [Sarmat] missile into a forest ahead of ‘new tests’ amid acute tension with the West

‘Actual acceptance of the ICBM into service with the Strategic Missile Forces …is hardly achievable by 2024.’

More than a year ago, Rogozin visited the Krasmash defence factory in Krasnoyarsk, in eastern Siberia, which he labelled the ‘Doomsday Plant’, to inspect the process of producing Satan-2 for flight tests.

The missile was rolled out into a forest for the cameras – and sabre-rattling Rogozin said: ‘The world’s most powerful global-range nuclear-tipped missile is being prepared for new tests.’

Yet there is no evidence these tests happened.

Are there any defences against intercontinental ballistic missiles?

A number of countries maintain anti-missile systems which aim to shoot down or destroy missiles before the are able to reach their intended targets.

But these systems are typically only effective against small numbers of missiles, travelling well below hypersonic speeds.

The advent of hypersonic missile technology and long-range ICBMs, such as Russia’s latest Sarmat missile, have made anti-missile systems largely redundant.

The U.S.’ Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation said that ‘despite decades of research, development, and testing, there remains no reliably effective anti-missile system to counter intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs)’.

Existing missile defence systems, such as the U.S. Patriot system, can target incoming short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles whose threat is localised to one region, but cannot effectively protect against nuclear-capable ICBMs such as the Sarmat that can deploy warheads across vast areas.

According to former Assistant Secretary of Defense and U.S. chief weapons evaluator Philip Coyle: ‘All missile defense systems can be overwhelmed… It is only if the attack is limited that the defense can have a hope of not being overwhelmed.’

In the early 2000s, the U.S. began work on developing a specialised system designed to intercept ICBMs, known as the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system.

This aims to use a range of sensors and radars, based in locations around the world and in space, to detect ICBM launches and destroy them out of the Earth’s atmosphere, before the warheads have a chance to re-enter and hit their targets.

But the programme is wildly expensive and has returned extremely poor results, even in scripted tests in perfect conditions.

For three years in a row, Bamburgh has been named the UK’s best seaside town in an annual ranking by Which? – with the Northumberland village scoring an impressive 88 per cent in this year’s survey.

The Lincolnshire beach resort of Skegness, meanwhile, has floundered at the bottom of the table for the past four years running, this year tying for last place with Clacton-on-Sea with a dismal score of 48 per cent.

But what is the difference between the best and the worst? And is the worst really that bad? I’m holidaying in both Bamburgh and Skegness, along with a friend, to find out.

In the former, there are ‘magical’ views and a ‘knockout’ beach, but some surprisingly high prices. While in the latter, there are shots of Jagermeister in the morning, littered cigarette butts – but an impressive bounty of amusements. Read on for more…

BEACHES AND SEAFRONT

Skegness’ Blue Flag beach is huge, sandy and a clear hit with families, who have heaps of room to spread out and throw down their picnics, buckets and spades. We see a pair of detectorists scouring the sand, a paraglider floating overhead and children bodyboarding in the sea. Some empty cups and crushed McDonald’s packaging are littered here and there on the sand on Saturday afternoon, but by Sunday morning it’s cleaned up and the beach is spotless.

The pier itself – which dates back to 1881 – is pretty, festooned with fairy lights and with old-timey writing spelling out ‘Skegness’. And it’s about to get an ambitious makeover. A noticeboard unveils plans to turn it into ‘an exciting and educational visitor attraction’ with ‘stylish glass dome shelters’ and pockets of greenery.

Around the seafront there’s stall upon stall selling doughnuts, ice creams and booze-infused slushies, while the smell of fish and chips wafts from the cafes. On first impressions, everything seems sugar-coated or deep-fried, but a handful of stalls sell fresh shellfish too – dressed crab and tubs of mussels for just a few quid.

And a star turn comes in the form of Tarantino Restaurant, the town’s Italian eatery. It’s packed on Saturday evening, but we manage to get a table and have an excellent dinner – truffle arancini (£5.90) and calamari (£8.90) to share, with tricolore salad (£7.90) for mains and a lovely bottle of Sicilian Miral Nero d’Avola (£22.50).

ACCOMMODATION

Our berths are at the Savoy hotel on North Parade, a handy spot a few minutes from the seafront. It costs £99 to book through Booking.com.

The welcoming staff let us check in early and while the room itself has no frills, it’s clean and comfortable.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS AND ENTERTAINMENT

A map in the centre of town is supposed to outline the town’s highlights, but it’s been partially torn away – although a sign in its place assures that a ‘new map is coming soon’.

It doesn’t matter, as it’s easy to see that Skegness – or Skeg Vegas as it’s nicknamed – is chock-a-block with attractions, starting with the endless arcades and bingo halls. There’s an ‘Upside Down House’, several mini golf courses, pedalos for hire and the Altitude44 climbing course, which bills itself as ‘the UK’s tallest urban ropes course’. At the heart of the seafront is the Skegness Pleasure Beach theme park, home to candy-coloured dodgems, a Ferris wheel, a ghost train, and more. It’s a kind of paradise for kids.

Our visit coincides with the annual SO Festival, which sees open-air plays hosted in Tower Gardens and performers taking to the streets.

A handful of historic sites take you back to Skegness’s Victorian heyday, from the neo-Gothic clocktower to the fountain crowned by the town’s ‘Jolly Fisherman’ mascot, who had a starring role in a 1908 advert with the now-iconic slogan ‘Skegness is SO bracing’.

The standard of evening entertainment is more of a grey area. I ask a bartender if she has any tips for where to go on a Saturday night in the town, and she recommends a bar called ‘Busters’. When I ask her if it’s any good, she shrugs and replies that ‘it is what it is, it’s Skeggie’.

SCENERY

Skegness Beach is at its most scenic when you wander south, away from the ruckus of the fairground rides towards the quiet of the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve

The town is a peculiar mishmash of Victorian heritage and rainbow-coloured shops selling bucket hats and vapes. It isn’t the prettiest but there’s a kitschy charm to it.

Sitting on the beach, the main view is of the Lincs Offshore Wind Farm 8km (five miles) off the coast. Some may find the wind turbines an eyesore but they’re impressive – signage on the beach informs bathers that they can ‘meet the annual electricity needs of more than 300,000 households’.

The beach is at its most scenic when you wander south, away from the ruckus of the fairground rides towards the quiet of the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, where skylarks, waders and brent geese can be spotted, depending on the season.

SHOPPING

If you’re looking for a bargain, there’s a bundle of charity shops and stalls selling trinkets and seaside staples. In one shop, I’m tempted by a feather-trimmed cowboy hat, while another has some strange hyper-realistic dolls on display, which seem to stop passersby in their tracks.

PEACE AND QUIET

'While it's busy in the daytime, it's quieter than expected on a Saturday night, and actually quite peaceful and empty on Sunday morning,' says Ailbhe

‘While it’s busy in the daytime, it’s quieter than expected on a Saturday night, and actually quite peaceful and empty on Sunday morning,’ says Ailbhe

There’s a stag party doing shots of Jagermeister on our train at 9.30 in the morning. When a hen do boards they convince the bride-to-be to do a shot with them. They then announce that everyone should avoid the train toilet because one of their group ‘dropped his guts’ in there. It seems like a bad omen for the rest of the trip.

But when we get to the town, the hen and stag parties trickle off into the bars, and holidaying families and pensioners are the ones that fill the streets. While it’s busy in the daytime, it’s quieter than expected on a Saturday night, and actually quite peaceful and empty on Sunday morning.

Ailbhe writes: ‘Skegness is a good shout for a budget beach break’

Skegness is a good shout for a budget beach break. I see uber-cheap pints for £3.50. You could easily get lunch for under a fiver – there are places selling haddock and chips for £4.50 and egg baps for £2.20. For dessert, you could get a 99 ice cream with all the trimmings for around £2.

And the pricing takes into account the variety of holidaymakers who love Skegness. One place advertises a ‘senior citizen special’ – cod or haddock with chips, bread and butter, and a cup of tea for £6.99. Kids’ meals, in some restaurants, are priced at as little as £2.30.

TRANSPORT

It’s no hassle to get there by train. LNER takes us from London’s King’s Cross station to the town of Grantham, before we change on to one of the relatively frequent East Midlands Railway trains to Skegness. The view from the window seat is picturesque as you near the coast, cutting past a sprawl of green Lincolnshire fields and the chocolate-box Heckington Windmill.

OVERALL VERDICT

A local tells Ailbhe that ‘lots of people knock [Skegness]’ but that it can be ‘lovely’

The flashy attractions and sugar-loaded snacks at every turn make the place a sensory overload, but that’s part of its charm. It’s not for everyone but it’s a winning recipe for many, with Skegness welcoming 2.3million visitors a year. The holidaymakers I see there seem to be having a blast.

A waitress at a cafe in the town tells me that ‘lots of people knock [Skegness]’ but that it can be ‘lovely’ when it’s quiet. ‘Everyone is really friendly,’ she adds.

There seems to be a problem with littering and parts of the town look a little run down. I see lots of cigarette butts scattered along the streets, for instance. If a little TLC was injected into the town – and visitors took more care to pick up their rubbish – Skegness could be restored to its glory days. Perhaps the restoration of the pier will herald a turning point.

While waiting for a table at Tarantino Restaurant, I get speaking to another first-time visitor in Skegness. I ask her what she thinks of the town, and she describes it as a ‘strange little place’. In her words, it’s ‘bizarre and excellent at the same time’. I second that.

BEACHES AND SEAFRONT

I’m not surprised Bamburgh’s beach gets five stars in the Which? survey – it’s a knockout. There’s no litter. The sand is pale gold and soft underfoot – almost tropical. The water is clear and a shade of blue that you rarely see in the UK. A barista in the village tells me that she believes it’s the area’s water quality that makes Bamburgh (pronounced ‘bam buh ruh’) so popular.

I see clusters of families paddling in the sea and building sandcastles, but the beach is so vast and long that it could never feel crowded.

The cherry on top is the sight of Bamburgh Castle – built atop a mammoth heft of rock – looming over the beach. I chat with one local woman who describes it as the ‘best sandcastle in England’.

It’s surprisingly expensive to go for dinner in Bamburgh – most restaurants have main dishes around the £20 to £30 mark. The place to go is Michelin Guide-recommended fish restaurant The Potted Lobster, but it’s fully booked on Saturday night. I end up going for a pub dinner in The Castle Inn as its menu has the cheapest prices, but regret it when my underwhelming veggie burger (£14.95) arrives at the table. It has an inviting beer garden, however.

Lunch options are better. The sign for the ‘Butcher, Baker, Sausage Roll Maker’ marks the entrance to R Carter and Sons butchers, where you can get ‘three bangers in a bap’ for a bargain £3. Their sausages have been voted the finest in Northumberland, it proudly notes. Plus, the business is a piece of Bamburgh’s history – as the sign hanging outside says, ‘it’s been carnivore heaven since 1887’.

I pay £125 for a night in Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast right in the village. It’s a sweet little place if somewhat dated.

Friendly owner Malcolm and his son seem to go the extra mile for guests – two cyclists seated near me at breakfast are presented with the kippers they’ve requested, even though they aren’t on the breakfast menu.

Bamburgh is a honey pot for history enthusiasts. The big attraction, naturally, is Bamburgh Castle, which recently doubled as a Nazi stronghold in the new Indiana Jones blockbuster. A day ticket is £15.50 for adults and a family ticket is £41. You get mesmerising views of the sea from the canon-lined ramparts. Kids seem transfixed by the haunting dungeons in the belly of the castle, which are filled with mannequin prisoners.

Free-to-enter, meanwhile, is the fascinating St Aidan’s Church, which dates back to 635AD. A must-see is the eerie church crypt, wherein lies a row of ossuary boxes containing the bones of 7th and 8th-century locals.

The graveyard holds an ornate monument to Grace Darling, a local lighthouse keeper’s daughter who rose to fame when she helped to rescue survivors from an 1838 shipwreck. There’s also a museum dedicated to her, though it’s closed during our visit.

A poster in the village advertises an upcoming sandcastle building contest (the theme is ‘sea creature’) and there’s a playground, a golf course and cricket matches at the pavilion – complete with signs warning to ‘beware of flying cricket balls’. It’s all very endearing, but you’d run out of things to do after a day or two if you didn’t have a car.

Bamburgh Castle as the sun goes down. Ailbhe describes the view as ‘magical’

The sight of the castle soaring over the village is spectacular. As for the village itself, it looks like a filming location for Midsomer Murders, with flowers clinging to the walls and couples playing croquet on the pavilion.

When the sun starts to set, we stand atop a hill beside the castle – a perch once voted ‘one of the UK’s top 10 lunch spots’ – and admire the scenery. The view, with the Farne Islands archipelago fading into the horizon, is nothing short of magical. There’s no doubt Bamburgh deserves the full five stars it was awarded for scenery in the Which? ranking.

SHOPPING

There’s not much in the way of shopping, but that’s down to the village’s size. The main shop is a teeny deli called The Pantry that sells local produce such as Northumberland cheeses and preserves. For souvenirs, you can pick up prints and postcards in the Bamburgh Castle gift shop.

PEACE AND QUIET

'It seems the majority of visitors in Bamburgh are daytrippers,' Ailbhe writes

‘It seems the majority of visitors in Bamburgh are daytrippers,’ Ailbhe writes

Bamburgh’s popularity and its tiny size are at odds with one another – it can get jampacked in the daytime. We can’t get a seat at The Copper Kettle Tea Rooms at lunchtime as it’s full up. A whopper queue of families and dog walkers forms on the main street, stemming from the Wyndenwell café – the town’s purveyor of ice creams. But it seems the majority of visitors are daytrippers, as once dusk falls, it’s sleepy and silent.

VALUE FOR MONEY

I’m taken aback by the restaurant prices in the village – even coming from London. Lots of travellers would be priced out of a visit. The cost of accommodation, on the other hand, is standard. Generally, however, it doesn’t compete with Skegness’s cheap and cheerful prices.

TRANSPORT

We catch an LNER Azuma train from London King’s Cross to Berwick-upon-Tweed, the northernmost town in England, speeding past the isle of Lindisfarne and its 16th-century castle as the train traces the Northumberland coast. From the town, the X81 bus to Alnwick – which runs a few times a day – takes us straight to Bamburgh.

OVERALL VERDICT

I can see why Bamburgh ranks in first place time and time again. It offers an enchanting cocktail of beautiful scenery and magnificent historic sites. A local woman tells me that travellers typically overlook Northumberland in favour of Devon or Cornwall, but ‘once they’ve come and seen what it’s like, they keep telling their friends and coming back’. The steep restaurant prices are off-putting, however. I’d recommend renting self-catering accommodation or dining in nearby village Seahouses, where prices are more reasonable.

All in all, Skegness and Bamburgh are worlds apart, but they each have a unique appeal – and seem to be luring holidaymakers in their droves.

The launch of an exciting mission that will confirm if an asteroid near Mars is worth an unimaginable amount of money is now just two months away.

NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has had its two jumbo solar arrays attached as engineers put the finishing touches on it ahead of its targeted October 5 lift-off date.

The orbiter is due to explore an asteroid called 16 Psyche which scientists think may be packed full of precious metals with a value in excess of $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion).

Others dispute this and say it is just hard rock, but NASA should be able to tell either way when its Psyche spacecraft gets to the asteroid in July 2029.

Engineers in California are getting the orbiter ready to journey 2.5 billion miles (4 billion kilometres) to 16 Psyche, which sits in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

HOW MUCH IS PSYCHE WORTH?

If 16 Psyche is in fact loaded with precious metals, it could be worth an extraordinary amount of money, according to Dr Linda Elkins-Tanton, a space scientist at MIT.

She has calculated that the iron in 16 Psyche alone would be worth $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion).

Assuming the market for asteroid materials is on Earth, this could cause the value of precious metals to plummet, completely devaluing all holdings including those of governments, and all companies involved in mining, distributing and trading such commodities.

Ultimately, it could lead to the collapse of the entire economy.

Speaking to Global News Canada, Dr Elkins-Tanton said: ‘Even if we could grab a big metal piece and drag it back here … what would you do?

‘Could you kind of sit on it and hide it and control the global resource – kind of like diamonds are controlled corporately – and protect your market?

‘What if you decided you were going to bring it back and you were just going to solve the metal resource problems of humankind for all time? This is wild speculation obviously.’

After passing a deployment test, Psyche’s twin solar array wings were re-stowed and will remain tucked away on the sides of the orbiter until the spacecraft leaves Earth.

At 800 square feet (75 square metres), the five-panel, cross-shaped solar arrays are the largest ever deployed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

With the arrays unfurled in flight, the spacecraft will be about the size of a tennis court.

Although they will produce more than 20 kilowatts of power when the spacecraft is near Earth, the solar arrays are primarily designed to work in the low light of deep space.

The asteroid Psyche is so far from the sun that even these massive arrays will generate just over 2 kilowatts of power at that distance, which is only a little more power than a hair dryer uses.

Psyche is due to piggy-back into space on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket which is scheduled to lift off from Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida no earlier than 10:38 ET (15:38 BST) on October 5.

NASA hopes that as well as establishing how metal-rich the object is, scientists will also be able to learn more about planetary cores and how planets form.

The US space agency recently completed a test campaign of the probe’s flight software and installed it on the spacecraft, clearing the hurdle that kept Psyche from making its original 2022 launch date.

‘The team and I are now counting down the days to launch,’ Psyche’s project manager Henry Stone said last month.

‘Our focus has shifted to safely completing the final mechanical closeout of the spacecraft and preparing the team for operations.

‘The team is conducting numerous training activities to ensure that we are prepared and ready.

‘It’s a very busy time, but everyone is very excited and looking forward to the launch.’

Once it has escaped Earth’s gravity, the spacecraft will use solar electric propulsion to complete its six-year journey to the Psyche asteroid of the same name.

Scientists think the space rock, which measures about 173 miles (279 kilometres) at its widest point, may be part of a core of a planetesimal — the building block of an early planet.

It could also provide a unique opportunity to study how planets like our own Earth formed.

Scientists believe that rocky planets have dense metal cores at the centre of the magma beneath their surfaces, but because these lie so far beneath the mantle and crust of such worlds, they’re difficult to measure and study directly.

Once NASA’s orbiter reaches 16 Psyche it will spend at least 26 months orbiting the asteroid.

While there, the spacecraft will take countless pictures and gather data that will tell scientists more about its history and what it is made of.

They hope the information will include the asteroid’s topography, its gravitational properties, and the way different elements are distributed throughout the object.

The Psyche spacecraft has been described by engineers as being ‘slightly bigger than a Smart Car and about as tall as a regulation basketball hoop’, while if you include the solar panels that will power its movement, it is about as large as a tennis court.

The mission has been in the phase known as assembly, test, and launch operations since March 2021.

Luis Dominguez, the systems and electrical lead for assembly, test, and launch operations, said of the preparations: ‘We are moving forward and we’re confident that when we’re on the pad, we’ll be ready to hit the button.

‘For all of us, we’ll be excited to launch this bird.’

THE METAL WORLD OF  16 PSYCHE

16 Psyche is located in the large asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and may have started as a planet, before it was partially destroyed during the formation of the solar system.

Now, it is believed to be a 173 mile (280 km) wide chunk of metal, made up of iron, nickel and a number of other rare metals, including gold, platinum and copper.

As such, it offers a unique look into the violent collisions that created Earth and the terrestrial planets.

The mission team seeks to determine whether Psyche is the core of an early planet, how old it is, whether it formed in similar ways to Earth’s core, and what its surface is like.

The spacecraft’s instrument payload will include magnetometers, multispectral imagers, and a gamma ray and neutron spectrometer.

Why are asteroids worth so much?

It may be 230 million miles (370 million km) away from Earth, but this asteroid could be worth a small fortune.

16 Psyche is one of the most mysterious objects in our solar system, and scientists will soon be getting a close-up view thanks to NASA’s upcoming mission.

If the asteroid could be transported back to Earth, the iron alone that experts think it could contain would be worth $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion).

Its value would be large enough to destroy commodity prices and cause the world’s economy – worth $73.7 trillion (£59.5 trillion) – to collapse.

Turkey’s inflation rate nears 50% as its overheating economy puts consumers under strain

While the Bank of England battles rising costs, Turkey is being ravaged by inflation.

Inflation almost touched 50 per cent in July as an overheating economy put consumers under strain, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.

Consumer prices rose 47.8 per cent last month, a substantial increase from 38.2 per cent in June.

Currently the height of the Turkish summer – hotels and restaurants posted the biggest rises in July, with an 82.6 per cent increase. Food costs jumped by 61 per cent.

Turkey is still in the middle of a cost of living crisis, even as the new economic team that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed in June continues to unwind unconventional policies that were in place for years.

Under new finance minister Mehmet Simsek, Turkey has abandoned its costly defence of the lira and allowed it to plummet by a quarter against the euro since the end of May.

Simsek has boosted taxes on a broad range of goods and services, including a 200 per cent increase in petrol taxes, to cool demand and refill government coffers.

Central bank chief Hafize Erkan forecast last week that inflation would reach 58 per cent this year, falling to 33 per cent by the end of 2024 and 15 per cent the following year.

But many economists worry that Erdogan, an opponent of high borrowing costs, will not allow the central bank to raise rates to a sufficient level to cool inflation down.

Elizabeth Banks showcased her toned arms and legs while putting her groceries in the back of her car outside a supermarket in Los Angeles on Monday.

The actress, 49, who recently returned from an Italian vacation, tried to beat the heat wearing black and white striped mini dress that showed off her toned and tanned figure.

The star added comfy white sneakers as she appeared to be wearing minimal makeup.

The Call Jane star’s blonde hair was pulled back into a loose bun. She wore dark sunglasses atop her head as she put her purchases in the back of her car.

This comes after the star talked directing the box-office disappointment Charlie’s Angeles.

The actress, who is currently starring in The Beanie Bubble on Apple TV+, has expanded her resume to include producing and directing since beginning her career in the late 1990s.

With the hype about Barbie, which has earned some $780 million globally so far,  Elizabeth, who directed 2019’s Charlie’s Angels reboot, is speaking out about the difficulties of being the woman calling the shots.

Her Charlie’s Angels movie opened to mixed reviews and made only $73 million worldwide.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, she spoke some of the challenges she faced due to the way the film was perceived.

‘For me, regardless of what the actual product was, so much of the story that the media wanted to tell about Charlie’s Angels was that it was some feminist manifesto,’ she explained.

‘People kept saying, “You’re the first female director of Charlie’s Angels!” And I was like, “They’ve only done a TV show and McG’s movies… what are you talking about? There’s not this long legacy.”

‘I just loved the franchise,’ the Massachusetts native said.

‘There was not this gendered agenda from me,’ she contended.

‘That was very much laid on top of the work, and it was a little bit of a bummer. It felt like it pigeonholed me and the audience for the movie.

‘To lose control of the narrative like that was a real bummer,’ she claimed.

‘You realize how the media can frame something regardless of how you’ve framed it.

‘I happen to be a woman who directed a Charlie’s Angels movie that happened to star three incredible women. You can’t control the media saying, “You’re a lady director, and that’s special!” — which it is, but it’s not the only thing,’ she pointed out.

‘I remember having a conversation with someone who was like, “You guys are going to have a partnership with Drybar” — which is, like, a hair-blowing thing — and I was like, “Alright… but could we have an ad during the baseball playoffs? It’s not only this one thing.”

‘It was interesting to see how the industry sees things that star women. It was a real lesson for me.’

She did not address how audience members found the film too ‘woke,’ which seemed to be the main complaint.

The Cocaine Bear director hasn’t shied away from other projects. She is currently signed to direct The Greater Good, described as a ‘comedic version of The X-Files.’

She also produced Bottoms, starring Emma Seligman, Rachel Sennott and Kaia Gerber.

The comedy about two unpopular lesbians who start a fight club so they can have sex with cheerleaders before their high school graduation opens August 25.
