A fascinating reworked world map reveals the most popular tourist sites in almost every country around the world.

On the map – generated using five years of Wikipedia page view data – country names have been supplemented by the national landmark that is most frequently read about on Wikipedia, in a bid to uncover the world’s most ‘wondered about’ landmarks and attractions.

In the UK, the Stonehenge archaeological site in Wiltshire is the most popular landmark, with 13.5million page views on Wikipedia.

Meanwhile, in the U.S, it’s the Statue of Liberty that’s number one, with the Wikipedia page views for the monument numbering 19.8million.

And Down Under, the Great Barrier Reef is Australia’s most popular tourist attraction with five million page views on the free online encyclopedia.

A fascinating reworked world map reveals the most popular tourist sites in almost every country around the world

Among the most popular landmarks across the globe, there are 32 cultural and historical sites, 32 parks and reserves, 26 ancient ruins, 20 mountains and volcanoes, 17 bodies of water, 15 religious landmarks, nine islands, seven modern architectural sites and two deserts.

The results of the study, which was conducted by travel insurance firm AllClear, were also used to draw up a series of regional maps, showing the most popular landmarks on every continent.

In Europe, the Eiffel Tower ranks top in France (17million page views), the Sagrada Familia is number one in Spain (11million page views), the Cliffs of Moher take the gong in Ireland (1.9million page views), the Colosseum is number one in Italy (12million page views) and the Acropolis takes the top prize in Greece (4.8million page views).

Among some of the more unusual top-ranking European landmarks is Manneken Pis in Belgium, which is a famous statue of a little boy urinating (two million page views) and the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland (1.2million page views), a 1,072ft- (327m) deep former mine with a chapel in its subterranean depths.

Finally, in Africa, it’s Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves, that’s number one in South Africa (1.6million page views), Victoria Falls is top in Zimbabwe (3.4million page views), and Mount Kilimanjaro is number one in Tanzania (7.5million page views).

Several ancient cities also come top on the continent – for instance, in Libya it’s Leptis Magna, which dates back to 1000 BC (731,000 page views) and in Tunisia it’s Carthage, from the 9th century B.C (5.5million page views).

In carrying out the research, a list of over 4,300 landmarks from every country around the globe was drawn up.

For every landmark that had Wikipedia pages, the page views over a five-year period were analysed. Culturally or historically sensitive sites or disputed areas were removed from the data, for sensitivity reasons, as well as any countries with data that was too low.

Commenting on the study, AllClear says: ‘As Wikipedia is often where people turn to learn and gather information, it’s the perfect data source to help pinpoint the places in the world that people are most interested in.’

Five young hotel workers have died after a steel lift cable snapped at a Bali resort and plunged them 100 metres down a steep embankment.

The two men and three women were working in the housekeeping department at Ayuterra Resort in the Ubud district when they got into an Instagram-famous glass lift, which runs on a track up a 35-degree slope, at 1pm on Friday.

The workers were identified as Ni Luh Superningsih, 20, Kadek Hardiyanti, 24, Kadek Yanti Pradewi, 19, Sang Putu Bayu Adi Krisna, 19, and Wayan Aries Setiawan, 23.

Outrage has erupted, with the families paid just over $4,000 in compensation from their employers, on the condition they will not launch legal action against the resort.

According to local media, families have been given between IDR158.2m ($16,308) and IDR166.1m ($17,122) from social security program BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, and about IDR 40m ($4112) from the resort owners to cover cremation rituals and on compassionate grounds.

However, the added support from Ayuterra Resort means families would not be able to launch legal action against the company.

The uncle of Mr Hardiyanti, Nyoman Suarila told local publication Kumparan, that he accepted the terms.

‘Even if we sue, our children will not return,’ he said.

‘But we believe in karma. If the company is wrong, then it will get it. That’s our principle.

‘If the incident that caused my nephew’s death was the fault of a technician or something, it must be processed according to applicable law.’

Two of the staff died at the scene while the remaining three were alive and transported to hospital, but died shortly after.

A cook at the hotel, Ketut Suwiarta, told local media he heard screams shortly after the group entered the lift and then crashing sounds.

He rushed outside to help the victims and alerted authorities.

The elevator runs on a track and transports both tourists and workers between the upper sections of the hotel high up on the ridge and the resort facilities at ground level.

It is understood the elevator was a popular Instagram attraction at the resort, offering views over the surrounding landscape.

Police are investigating why the cable broke, whether adequate safety maintenance had been done, and why there were no backup measures in case the cable broke.

The families met with Bali’s deputy governor, Cok Ace, over the weekend as Balinese Hindu ceremonies were held to cleanse the site and wish the victims well.

‘I was at the resort earlier; the Bali Police were there, the police chief too, as well as several witnesses who knew of the incident,’ he said.

‘Earlier, when I was being interviewed there, I saw for myself the scene where the rope had broken.’

All guests at the resort have been relocated to other accommodation while the investigation is underway.

Authorities warned this was a wakeup call to hotels

Resort owner Linggawati Utomo expressed her sympathies to the victims’ families.

Ubud Police Chief, Police Commissioner Made Uder said on Monday the tragedy would serve as a wake up call to all hotels and businesses on the holiday island.

‘The steel swing rope was not strong enough to pull the weight upwards, which was quite heavy, and the safety wedge or brake did not function, so the elevator slid downwards at high speed so this accident could not be avoided,’ he said.

The lift was reportedly inspected by an independent consultant as recently as November 2022 who said it was in operating condition.

Millions of high-earning Americans to lose popular 401(K) tax deduction – here’s what it means for YOU

  • Workers aged over 50 making catch-up contributions to their 401(K)s will only be able to funnel them into a Roth account from next year
  • It means they will be taxed upfront – rather than when they withdraw the money
  • READ MORE: Is a Roth 401(K) REALLY a good idea? Finance guru issues warning

Changes to a popular 401(K) tax deduction are set to hit millions of high-earning Americans from next year.

Workers over the age of 50 are entitled to make catch-up contributions to their 401(K)s worth up to $7,500 this year. The annual cap on all contributions is $30,000.

But from 2024, those earning over $145,000 will no longer be able to put these catch-up payments into a traditional 401(K).

Instead, the money will only be funneled into a Roth IRA account, according to new rules passed through Congress in December.

The main difference between a Roth account and a 401(K) pot is that the former is taxed upfront – but can be withdrawn for free in retirement.

Millions of high-earning Americans are set to be hit by a huge change to their 401(K) contributions from next year

Millions of high-earning Americans are set to be hit by a huge change to their 401(K) contributions from next year

With a 401(K), workers are not taxed on their contributions until they withdraw them.

This option is often preferable because retirees tend to be in a lower tax band in retirement, meaning they pay a smaller levy – though this varies depending on incomes.

For example, if a worker was in a 35 percent tax bracket, they would be taxed $2,625 on a $7,500 catch-up payment.

But if they fell into a 22 percent bracket in retirement, the levy would drop to $1,650.

Experts say the change will have a major impact on America’s retirement planning landscape. Figures from wealth management firm Vanguard show 16 percent of eligible workers made catch-up contributions last year.

However many insist the new rules may be a welcome change as workers often ignore the value of Roth accounts.

Brooklyn financial adviser Cristina Guglielmetti told the Wall Street Journal: ‘The Roth is such a powerful savings tool that I try to have at least some dollars going into that bucket for all my clients, regardless of tax bracket.’

The changes do not apply to IRAs which have a catch-up contribution limit of $1,000 this year for those over 50. The cap on all contributions is $1,500.

Roth retirement pots are considered relatively controversial, with their value often being underestimated.

Many prefer the traditional 401(K) route because they assume that they will be in a lower tax bracket in retirement.

But this is not always the case – especially as tax is certainly likely to rise by the time a worker reaches retirement age.

Data from Northwestern Mutual show that the typical American has just seven percent of their 401(K) target currently saved up

Data from Northwestern Mutual show that the typical American has just seven percent of their 401(K) target currently saved up

Investment advisor Patrick Donnelly recently told Dailymail.com: ‘When you’re contributing for retirement you have to consider what your taxable income is now versus what it’s going to be in retirement, but what he should consider is the outlook for future tax rates.

‘We’re in a relatively favorable tax environment today for both high and low income earners, compared to historic income tax rates.’

Donnelly projects that this means that the US is looking towards a prolonged period of substantially higher average tax rates in the future – which he predicts could reach peaks of 15 or 17 percent.

Experts have repeatedly sounded the alarm over America’s retirement crisis, with each generation all failing to put enough money into their 401(K)s.

A recent survey by the National Institute on Retirement Security found that the average ‘Generation Z’ household – those aged between 43 and 58 – had just $40,000 saved for retirement.

This is despite the fact the oldest members of the cohort are less than two years away from being able to withdraw funds from their 401(K)s, aged 59 and a half.

And they are four years away from being able to claim social security at 62. At present, it means the cohort would have just $1,600 a year to see them from 60 to 85.

Separate data from Northwestern Mutual show that the typical American has just seven percent of their 401(K) target currently saved up.

The Voice Australia coach Jason Derulo slams extremely popular Aussie food staple

Jason Derulo has been living in Sydney, Australia as he films the local edition of The Voice

While the American singer has enjoyed some of the local delicacies, there is one he is very much not a fan of.

During Sunday’s episode of The Voice Australia, the 33-year-old was encouraged to try popular local toast spread Vegemite.

With his eyes closed and wearing an Outback cork hat, Jason was fed Aussie foods by his fellow judges Rita Ora, Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian.

The sharp, salty yeast concoction is a favourite with many Australians but Jason was horrified.

‘Woah,’ he said after taking a sniff of the spread, with his co-star Rita assuring him, ‘It’s not bad at all’.

Jason recoiled as the Vegemite spread all over his teeth, clearly disliking the taste.

‘Not gonna lie, that Vegemite was not it. I was like, “Oh damn, they just fed me s**t on live television,”‘ he said.

Jason was more impressed by Arnott’s Tim Tam chocolate biscuits, which he called, ‘unbelievable’ and said he ‘loved’.

It comes after the star revealed that there is no competition when it comes to whether the coffee is better Down Under or in the USA.

‘I think so, I really do,’ he said to The Daily Telegraph when asked if Australia has better coffee than his homeland.

Jason has been spending time in Sydney during filming and told the publication that he’s enjoying his stay.

‘I got to sink my teeth into a routine and the culture of Australia,’ he explained.

‘I’ve always really loved Australia, but this is the first time where I got to spend some time there so being able to go to a gym that I like going to, and having favourite restaurants, that’s really cool.’

A chemical found in black licorice could help fight one of the world’s deadliest cancers, a first-of-its-kind study suggests.

A study on mice found the flavonoid isoliquiritigenin (ISL), which is in licorice root, an herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, could kill pancreatic cancer cells.

Researchers in Hong Kong also found the compound could make treatments like chemotherapy more effective.

Study leader Dr Joshua Ko Ka-Shun said: ‘This compound is worth considering for further development into a new generation of chemotherapy treatment.’

‘[Pancreatic cancer] is difficult to identify, and usually at a late stage when it is detected, with not many treatment options available. Finding a suitable treatment is urgent.’

The National Cancer Institute estimates that just over 44 percent of pancreatic cancer patients survive more than five years if the condition is still localized to its original area. It has an average survival rate of 12 percent

The National Cancer Institute estimates that just over 44 percent of pancreatic cancer patients survive more than five years if the condition is still localized to its original area. It has an average survival rate of 12 percent

When ISL was injected into tumors, the survival rate of those cancer cells dropped by 50 to 80 percent, depending on the dosage.

About 11 to 13 percent of cells entered late-stage apoptosis, or cell death, compared to less than five percent of cells that didn’t receive ISL.

‘ISL possesses a unique property of inhibiting pancreatic cancer progression through the blockade of autophagy, which is a natural process where the body’s cells clean out damaged or unnecessary components,’ Dr Ko said.

‘The blockade of late-stage autophagy in our experiments results in cancer cell death.’

The researchers also tested ISL’s effects on the chemotherapy drugs gemcitabine (GEM) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).

These drugs tend to have low success rates, as low as 10 percent, and many patients become resistant to them after a few months of treatment.

But the team found that adding ISL to GEM suppressed cancer cell growth by 18 percent, and adding it to 5-FU blocked growth by 30 percent.

Pancreatic cancer is the third deadliest form of the disease in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute, after lung and colorectal cancers.

On average, just 12.5 percent survive after five years.

The NCI estimates that more than half of these cases are diagnosed after the disease has already spread to other organs because the early symptoms, such as jaundice and abdominal pain, are easy to overlook.

When the cancer reaches later stages, the survival rate dwindles as low as three percent.

This has caused pancreatic cancer to be dubbed a ‘silent killer.’

Cases are on the rise as well. In the US, the disease incidence has increased by one percent every year since 2000, according to the American Cancer Society

Globally, cases have doubled since 1990, a 2019 study in The Lancet estimated.

The research is still early, and Dr Ko urged the public not to consume large amounts of licorice to prevent cancer.

However, the team is optimistic that ISL could be used in treatments within the next several years.

‘The findings in this study open a new avenue for developing ISL as a novel autophagy inhibitor in the treatment of pancreatic cancer,’ Dr Ko said.

‘We hope to collaborate with other research partners to further evaluate the effectiveness and potential clinical application of ISL in treating pancreatic cancer.’

Thanks to a new study by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), which looked at where the likes of Irish Doodles, Chugs, Shichons and Goldadors rank in the popularity stakes, a full list is included below.

Claiming top spot and way out in front are friendly Cockapoos – a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle.

Next come Labradoodles, which are a mix of a Labrador and Poodle, while Lurchers, Cavapoos and Sprockers round out the top five.

Jugs – which are a cross between a Pug and Jack Russell Terrier – claim 6th place, Chorkies 7th, Cavachons 8th, Goldendoodles 9th and Puggles 10th.

Among the other breeds which make the top 20 are Miniature Labradoodles, Schnoodles, Maltipoos, Jack-Chis, Shichons, Australian Labradoodles, Jackapoo, Poochons, Springadors and Yorkipoos.

Dogs are one of Britain’s best-loved pets, with the country’s canine population hitting a staggering 11 million this year, according to the PDSA.

Despite this, there has been surprisingly little research on the popularity of breeds of different ages in the UK.

In their new study, the team from the RVC analysed 2,237,105 dogs across 800 distinct breeds in the UK.

Data collected on each dog included their age, breed, body shape, body weight and sex.

The results revealed that, across all age groups, non-designer crossbreeds were the most popular, making up 24 per cent of the population.

This was followed by the Labrador Retriever (6.9 per cent), Jack Russell Terrier (4.5 per cent), English Cocker Spaniel (4.3 per cent), Staffordshire Bull Terrier (4.2 per cent) and Chihuahua (3.6 per cent).

However, the results were startlingly different when focusing on dogs aged under one year.

Among UK puppies, after general crossbreeds (20 per cent), the most common breeds were the French Bulldog (7.0 per cent), Cockapoo (6.2 per cent), Labrador Retriever (5.8 per cent), English Cocker Spaniel (4.7 per cent) and Chihuahua (4.2 per cent).

Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the RVC, and lead author of the paper, said: ‘With 800 dog breeds available in the UK, this VetCompass study shows there are still plenty of healthy breeds to choose from that do not suffer from extreme body shapes such as flat faces, skin folds or absent tails.

This cute little dog is a Chiweenie - a cross between a chihuahua and a dachshund

Havapoos - a mixture of a Havanese and Toy or Miniature Poodle - are another popular dog

‘Despite this, many UK owners are still persuaded by social influences and trends into acquiring dogs with extreme body shapes that are likely to result in serious health issues during much of their dogs’ lives.

‘The advice is to stop and think before buying a dog with an extreme body shape.’

Flat-faced dogs’ short-faced ‘brachycephalic’ characteristics did not evolve naturally, and are instead the result of selective breeding.

This facial structure puts them at high risk for a range of health conditions, including skin fold dermatitis, breathing and eye issues.

A study published last year by researchers from the RVC compared the risks of 40 common conditions in pugs with other dog breeds.

This designer dog is a Jug, a cross between a Pug and a Jack Russell Terrier

This designer dog is a Jug, a cross between a Pug and a Jack Russell Terrier

The team analysed the records of 16,218 pugs and 889,326 non-pug breeds, taken from the VetCompass database.

Their analysis revealed that pugs were at increased risk for 23 out of 40 common disorders.

Pugs were 54 times more likely to have brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome – a condition affecting the upper airway – and 51 times more likely to have narrow nostrils.

The breed was also 13 times more likely to suffer from corneal ulceration, 2.5 times more likely to suffer from obesity, and twice as likely to have overgrown nails.

Meanwhile, the researchers say the rise in designer crosses such as Cockapoos, Cavapoos, and Labradoodles is also concerning.

Owners often opt to spend huge amounts on these breeds amid the belief that they make better pets, trigger fewer allergic reactions or are easier to look after.

However, the researchers say there is limited evidence to support any of these beliefs.

The team hopes the findings will help prospective owners to make more informed decisions when buying a puppy.

‘We hope this paper encourages prospective dog owners to be thorough in their research and to prioritise the welfare of their new pet – above all else,’ Dr McMillan added.

‘Helping to ensure a long and happy life for their new family member.’

WHAT ARE THE TEN COMMONLY HELD MYTHS ABOUT DOGS?

It is easy to believe that dogs like what we like, but this is not always strictly true.

Here are ten things which people should remember when trying to understand their pets, according to Animal behaviour experts Dr Melissa Starling and Dr Paul McGreevy, from the University of Sydney.

1. Dogs don’t like to share

2. Not all dogs like to be hugged or patted

3. A barking dog is not always an aggressive dog

4. Dogs do not like other dogs entering their territory/home

5. Dogs like to be active and don’t need as much relaxation time as humans

6. Not all dogs are overly friendly, some are shyer to begin with

7. A dog that appears friendly can soon become aggressive

8. Dogs need open space and new areas to explore. Playing in the garden won’t always suffice

9. Sometimes a dog isn’t misbehaving, it simply does not understand what to do or what you want

10. Subtle facial signals often preempt barking or snapping when a dog is unhappy

Footy hall of fame star makes a small fortune from the $450million sale of popular tanning brand Bondi Sands to a Japanese beauty firm

  • Former player invested in son’s company
  • Had to weather some early problems with the brand
  • Is now laughing all the way to the bank

AFL Hall of Fame star Garry Wilson’s decision to back his son’s fledgling business has made the former Fitzroy rover filthy rich, with the company selling for $450million to Japanese-owned multinational company Kao Group.

Wilson, nicknamed Flea, was regarded as one of the best players of his era after playing 14 seasons with the Lions from 1971-84.

Known for his courage and trademark headgear, Wilson played 268 games and kicked 452 goals averaging 25 possessions and 1.7 goals per game as a rover.

In retirement, he became a seed investor for his son’s business Bondi Sands – a decision that has now made him a multi-millionaire.

No other tanning product comes to Bondi Sands in Australia and the company also has a hugely popular SPF range as well

It was a shaky start for the tanning product company when it launched 11 years ago, though, with an early batch turning customer’s skin green and necessitating a recall.

‘It was not the greatest start,’ his son and Bondi Sands CEO Shaun Wilson said in 2020.

‘The quality control of one of the ingredients was not up to scratch and we had to do a recall. We faced up to it and were honest with our wholesaler Priceline and they gave us another chance.’

However the company quickly rebounded to become the most iconic tanning product in the country, recording growth of around 55 per cent year on year.

Bondi Sands is set to report annual revenue of $190million for 2023, is the leading self-tanning product in Australia and includes a hugely successful SPF product range available for sale locally and in the UK.

Garry Wilson was one of three investors in those early days, including his son Shaun and co-founder and Melbourne businessmen Blair James.

Shaun said the deal with Kao will be transformational for the brand.

We’ve really just scratched the surface in terms of our growth opportunities and myself and the leadership team, we are fully committed to that, and it’s exciting to partner up with Kao,’ Mr Wilson told The Australian Financial Review.

‘America is a big focus for the company, we just launched into Walmart so that’s 4000 doors next month. We also have strong distribution with Ulta, Walgreens, CVS and Target, and we are leaders on Amazon.’

‘We want to be a leader in the global skincare protection business,’ he said. ‘We’ve got the fastest growing SPF business in Australia, and in the UK.’

It caps off a huge week for Shaun, who also became engaged to model girlfriend Tess Shanahan in an elaborate beach proposal.

British woman, 74, missing for two days is found dead in forest in popular Turkish holiday region

  • The unidentified British woman is reported to have suffered from Alzheimer’s
  • She was reported missing two days ago and was found by the roadside today

A British woman has been found dead in the Turkish province of Antalya two days after she was reported missing.

The 74-year-old British citizen, whose name remains unknown, was discovered unresponsive at the side of a road in a wooded area near the Asmaca district of Antalya.

Medical teams called to administer aid pronounced her dead at the scene.

Turkish media reported the woman was a resident of the popular coastal resort town of Alyana and had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, but the cause of her death has not yet been established.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out by coroners at the Alyana Municipality morgue this week.

An FCDO spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We have not been approached for consular assistance, but our staff stand ready to support British Nationals overseas 24/7.’

SPEAK TO ME

by Paula Cocozza

(Tinder Press £18.99, 272pp)

Being a Wendy myself, I tried not to mind that the intrusive smartphone in this novel has my name.

The heroine, Susan, is married to Kurt, who spends every available second on his mobile device. Susan calls it Wendy, and Wendy is ruining their relationship.

Their recent move to a bland newbuild hasn’t helped either, in the course of which Susan finds she’s lost some letters from a teenage lover.

A search ensues, which leads to the lover in person. Is this a good idea? A witty and thoughtful cri de coeur for a more innocent and genuinely communicative age.

TALKING AT NIGHT

by Claire Daverley

Michael Joseph £14.99, 400pp)

Will and Rosie are social opposites. He’s a bad lad from a rackety background, and she’s helicoptered and Oxford-bound.

An encounter at a teenage bonfire sets a slow fuse burning, before tragedy nips romance in the bud.

Slightly self-obsessed Rosie goes to uni, marries a kindly rower and tries to live her best life, while long-suffering Will watches from a lonely distance. But the fuse burns on. Will they ever get together (as it were)?

Great middle-class lifestyle detail is the star ingredient in this passionate, page-turning debut from Daverley.

THE COUPLES

by Lauren Mackenzie

Michael Joseph 16.99, 304pp)

I loved this Dublin-set love tangle about three sparkly young couples.

Lizzie and Frank, Beatrice and Conor, and Eva and Shay are all best friends until a game at a birthday bash gives reckless Frank ideas about ice-queen Beatrice. A steamy, dramatic affair begins, exposed in spectacular style by the least likely person.

Sympathetic to the strains and temptations of modern marriage, this story also reveals the destructive consequences of selfishness.

Underrated alternatives to some of the usual summer holiday hot spots have been revealed, and what’s more – flights to them are cheaper.

According to Skyscanner, for example, Britons could trade Tenerife for Naples this summer and save 58 per cent on flights.

It recommends leaving Naples’ airport and heading to the nearby village of Atrani, located along the Amalfi Coast, to enjoy its ‘colourful cliffside perch and idyllic beach with views of the Tyrrhenian Sea’.

If Britons swap Dalaman in Turkey for the French seaside town of Menton,  meanwhile, they’ll enjoy more savings – flights are 56 per cent cheaper to Nice Airport this summer, which is less than an hour’s drive away from Menton.

Skyscanner notes that historic Menton is nicknamed the ‘Pearl of France’ and boasts picturesque cobblestone streets and a warm climate.

Instead of flying to Larnaca in Cyprus, opt for the ‘surfer’s paradise’ of Biarritz – Skyscanner notes that flights are 55 per cent cheaper to the French resort. While there, it recommends you enjoy the ‘spectacular beaches’ along with the great foodie scene and ‘vibrant’ nightlife.

Or trade in the pyramids of Cairo for the ‘White City’ of Amman in Jordan – described by Skyscanner as ‘one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places in the world’ – and save 45 per cent on flights.

What’s more, the flight booking site reveals that UK travellers could save 35 per cent on flights if they swap the sunny shores of Valetta in Malta for Pula, Croatia – a city ‘filled with Roman ruins and ancient historic sites’ and ‘rocky beaches’.

These findings are part of research carried out by Skyscanner in association with OnePoll, which also found that a huge 88 per cent of Brits are open to travelling to more alternative or lesser-known destinations.

Almost half (49 per cent) of those polled said they would be likely to swap their holiday favourites for an alternative option if it meant they were likely to save money.

And 43 per cent of Britons polled admitted they actually prefer booking a trip to a new and alternative holiday destination over a tried-and-tested getaway spot.

Skyscanner notes that it has seen an increase in searches to underrated, alternative destinations, with searches for Biarritz booming by 166 per cent and searches for Valencia up by 165 per cent.

Elsewhere in its research, Skyscanner discovered crowd-pleasing – yet crowd-free – destinations that are popular with locals in Europe, but little known to Britons.

For instance, it found that 52 per cent of Britons surveyed had been to Amsterdam, but only 10 per cent had holidayed in The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government – even though 86 per cent of Dutch travellers had been there.

Skyscanner notes that the coastal city is less crowded and cheaper than Amsterdam – it recommends flying direct to Amsterdam from as little as £72 this August and taking a direct train to The Hague for £12.

Furthermore, 37 per cent of UK travellers have been to Palma in Mallorca, but only seven per cent have explored El Hierro, the second-smallest Canary Island, versus 20 per cent of Spanish travellers surveyed.

Skyscanner notes that UK travellers can fly to Tenerife this summer from £200 return and take the ferry direct to El Hierro for around £46.

A third (31 per cent) of Britons have yet to book their summer holiday this year, Skyscanner reveals, with 49 per cent of that group admitting that they’re still deciding on their ideal summer holiday destination.

To help travellers find underrated alternatives to the conventional holiday hot spots, Skyscanner is launching a new ‘Destination Decider’ feature on Instagram.

Hosted via the ‘direct message’ function on Instagram, the ‘Destination Decider’ bot asks travellers a series of travel-oriented questions before matching them with their ‘perfect’ alternative holiday destination.

SAVE WITH SKYSCANNER’S ‘EVERYWHERE’ SEARCH FUNCTION

Skyscanner’s ‘everywhere’ search function – in which travellers select ‘everywhere’ as their preferred destination while booking flights – reveals the lowest to highest-priced flights you can take around the world on your desired departure dates.

When surveyed, Brits estimated summer holiday flights are likely to cost £271.50 return per person on average this year, Skyscanner reveals. However, the booking site notes that using the ‘everywhere’ search feature, travellers can find cheap deals to alternative holiday spots this August including flights to Aalborg, Denmark, from £24 return; flights to La Rochelle, France, from £36 return and flights to Rimini, Italy, from £53 return.
