Professor Sir Ian Wilmut, the scientist who led the team that cloned Dolly the Sheep, has died aged 79.

Described as a ‘a titan of the scientific world’, the researcher’s death comes five years after he revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease — the condition Dolly offered hope of finding a cure for.

She was the first mammal ever to be cloned from an adult cell.

When Sir Ian unveiled the sheep in 1997 it paved the way for potential stem-cell treatments to tackle conditions such as Parkinson’s, a degenerative disease which affects more than 150,000 people in the UK.

Professor Sir Peter Mathieson, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, said: ‘We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Sir Ian Wilmut.

DOLLY’S OWN CLONES

Dolly the sheep died prematurely at the age of six 20 years ago.

However, four more sheep were derived from the same batch of cells as Dolly and considered her clone ‘sisters’ when they were born in 2007.

Known as the ‘Nottingham Dollies’ they were Debbie, Denise, Dianna and Daisy.

They became part of an experiment to study the long-term health effects of cloning.

The sheep lived until the age of 10 – around 70 years old in human years – but researchers revealed in 2017 that they would be put down.

The reason, they said, was because there was no ‘scientific merit’ in keeping them alive and 10 years of age was very old for a sheep.

‘He was a titan of the scientific world, leading the Roslin Institute team who cloned Dolly the sheep – the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell – which transformed scientific thinking at the time.

‘This breakthrough continues to fuel many of the advances that have been made in the field of regenerative medicine that we see today.

‘Our thoughts are with Ian’s family at this time.’

In 2018, in an interview with the BBC, Sir Ian said he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s just before Christmas of the previous year.

He added: ‘There was a sense of clarity, well at least now we know and we can start doing things about it. As well as obviously the disappointment that it will possibly shorten my life slightly, and more particularly it will alter the quality of life.’

Parkinson’s causes a range of symptoms, including muscle stiffness, slow movements, loss of smell and involuntary shaking.

There are treatments available that can help, but nothing can be done to slow down or stop the degenerative disease’s progression.

Speaking on the eve of Dolly’s 20th anniversary in 2016, Sir Ian said widespread use of stem cell treatments for conditions like Parkinson’s was still likely to be ‘decades away’.

He admitted that in the early days, scientists including himself had been carried away by the prospect of revolutionary stem cell therapies.

Dolly, who was born at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, on July 5 1996, made history by being the first mammal cloned from an adult cell.

Sir Ian said he had never hidden the fact that Dolly’s creation was largely a stroke of luck.

She was the only surviving lamb from 277 cloning attempts and was created from an udder cell taken from a six-year-old Finn Dorset sheep.

The pioneering technique the Roslin team used involved transferring the nucleus of an adult cell into an unfertilised egg cell whose own nucleus had been removed.

An electric shock stimulated the hybrid cell to begin dividing and generate an embryo which was then implanted into the womb of a surrogate mother. The result was a newborn animal that was a genetic copy of the original cell donor.

Dolly died on February 14 2003. She had suffered from arthritis and a virus-induced lung disease, and is thought to have aged prematurely due to being cloned from a sheep that was already six years old.

Despite sensational speculation about human cloning at the time of her birth, Dolly’s most important legacy was a massive boost to stem cell research.

The same cell reprogramming technique used to create Dolly was adopted by other scientists to generate ‘induced pluripotent stem cells’ (iPS cells) from adult human skin cells.

HOW WAS DOLLY THE SHEEP CREATED?

Dolly was the only surviving lamb from 277 cloning attempts and was created from a mammary cell taken from a six-year-old Finn Dorset sheep.

She was created in 1996 at a laboratory in Edinburgh using a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).

The pioneering technique involved transferring the nucleus of an adult cell into an unfertilised egg cell whose own nucleus had been removed.

Dolly was the first successfully produced clone from a cell taken from an adult mammal.

Dolly’s creation showed that genes in the nucleus of a mature cell are still able to revert back to an embryonic totipotent state – meaning the cell can divide to produce all of the difference cells in an animal.

  • An infuriated daughter has slammed Ryanair for charging her parents £110
  • The elderly couple had already checked in but downloaded the wrong passes

A woman has shamed Ryanair for charging her elderly parents £110 to print off their boarding passes.

The infuriated daughter said her parents, who are in their 70s and 80s, had mistakenly downloaded the return boarding card instead of the outgoing pass.

The two had already checked in and had paid an extra fee to sit next to each other, which the woman explained was to accommodate her disabled father.

But instead of resolving the ‘honest mistake’, the budget airline charged them £110 extra, adding even more stress to their trip.

Taking to Twitter, under the username @old_school_alps, the infuriated daughter said: Hey @Ryanair, my parents who are in their 70s and 80s, had accidentally downloaded the return flight boarding card instead of the outgoing ones and you charged them £110 to print them at the airport. £110 for 2 pieces of paper which took 1 minute. Shame on you.’

The woman was not alone in her frustration, and thousands of users took to the app to offer advice and recount their own horrifying experiences.

One person said: ‘We had a similar issue and they charged us £60 to get back home… never again.’

While one person wrote: ‘The cheapest airline will eventually cost you the most.’

Other users were more harsh and told the woman not to fly with budget airlines, one wrote: ‘Don’t fly with low cost airlines,’ another agreed: ‘It’s the entire point of low cost airlines.’

Another said: ‘They don’t care. If you can afford it, book another airline if not welcome to the low cost game.’

To which the woman responded: ‘No one else flies to them. Local airport and the only other one went bust.’

The daughter took to Twitter to complain, the Tweet has since gained 8.7million views with many sympathetic to the situation

Many pointed out that the Ryanair website states it costs £20 to reissue a boarding pass, which is considerably less than the £55 her parents were both charged.

The website does, however, charge £55 for airport check-in fees, but the woman has since pointed out: ‘They were checked in but had downloaded the return pass by mistake.’

It comes shortly after an Australian traveller was charged €55 for not checking in online before departure.

According to the Ryanair terms and conditions of carriage, travellers must check in up to two hours before the scheduled departure time. Boarding passes must be either printed or downloaded through the Ryanair app.

Customers travelling with Ryanair cannot check in online during the two hours before your flight’s scheduled departure time.

Ryanair have since responded to the tweet, asking the woman to contact them. MailOnline have contacted Ryanair for comment.

Does Ryanair charge for check-in?

Your boarding pass must be printed on a single A4 page or downloaded through the Ryanair app.

Unless you have a Plus or Flexi Plus ticket, if you do not check in online more than two hours before the scheduled departure time, you will be charged the airport check-in fee set out in the table of fees.

The check-in desks close strictly 40 minutes before the scheduled departure time unless you are notified otherwise before flight departure. If you do not check-in by then you may be denied boarding without refund.

You cannot check in online during the two hours before your flight’s scheduled departure time.

Online check-in opens 60 days before the scheduled departure time if you have purchased an allocated seat.

Customers can be allocated a seat free of charge if they check-in online between 24 and 2 hours before each booked flight.

Euphoria actor Angus Cloud has died at 25 at his family’s home in Oakland.

Cloud’s family told TMZ in a statement Monday, ‘It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today.

‘As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways.’

A 911 call was made by Cloud’s mother reporting a ‘possible overdose’ at around 11:30 a.m. Monday, sources told TMZ. She told operators that Cloud didn’t have a pulse, the outlet reported, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

A family insider told the outlet that Cloud had dealt with ‘severe suicidal thoughts’ after traveling to Ireland for his father’s funeral; and that he was at his family home in an effort ‘to work though overcoming the grief.’

The family in their statement alluded to the recent death of Cloud’s father, and how it impacted him.

‘Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss,’ the family said. ‘The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend.’

The family noted that Cloud ‘was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.’

The family requested following Cloud’s passing, ‘We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone. We ask for privacy at this time as we are still processing this devastating loss.’

The family of Cloud, who played Fezco on the HBO series from 2019 through 2022, did not state a cause of death for the actor.

On July 14, he had shared a post on Instagram of an image of his father with the caption, ‘miss u breh.’

His final post came on July 18 when he showed off a set of grillz from the company Grant Grillz, with the geotag coming from Dublin, Ireland.

A statement from the show’s Twitter page read: ‘We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud. He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.’

Cloud had past appeared in films such as 2023’s The Line opposite John Malkovich, 2021’s North Hollywood and on the TV series The Perfect Women.

He also had appeared in music videos for Becky G & Karol G’s Mamii in 2022; and in Juice WRLD’s Cigarettes in 2022.

Cloud had a number of projects in the works, including two unreleased films, according to iMDb, including a horror film titled Your Lucky Day and an Oakland-based drama titled Freaky Tales, starring Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn.

He was also linked to Scream 6 slated for next year. Production has not yet commenced on season three of Euphoria.

Cloud did not have any acting experience ahead of his role on Euphoria, as he was discovered by casting scout Eléonore Hendricks while walking in New York City, according to the AP

Cloud was initially skeptical of the opportunity, thinking it was a scam, but eventually got the role after meeting with casting director Jennifer Venditti.

Fans of the show lauded Cloud for his authenticity in the role, to an extent that he spoke about the misconceptions people had that he didn’t have to do much when the cameras were on.

‘It does bother me when people are like, ‘It must be so easy! You get to go in and be yourself,”‘ he told Variety. ‘I’m like, “Why don’t you go and do that?” It’s not that simple. I brought a lot to the character. You can believe what you want. It ain’t got nothing to do with me.’

Reps for the series said, 'He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.'

George Frazier, a relief pitcher who made two World Series appearances over a decade-long MLB career before becoming a broadcaster, passed away in Tulsa on Monday at age 68.

A specific cause of death has not been revealed, but he had been battling an undisclosed illness, according to the Denver Post.

Frazier is remembered by Colorado Rockies fans as the team’s color commentator from 1998 until 2015.

‘In a game full of charismatic characters, George had a seat at the head table,’ long-time Rockies play-by-play announcer Drew Goodman told the Denver Post.

Best known as Rich ‘Goose’ Gossage’s setup man for the New York Yankees, Frazier also pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins, winning a World Series in his final season with the latter.

The Rockies also released a statement on Monday.

‘We are deeply saddened at the passing of former Rockies color analyst, George Frazier,’ the statement began.

‘A retired MLB pitcher, George was a mainstay and the voice behind many classic calls on Rockies broadcasts from 1998-2015. For a generation of Rockies fans, George Frazier was synonymous with Rockies baseball. Our thoughts are with George’s wife, Kay, and his four kids, Matt, Brian, Parker and Georgia, during this time.’

A lanky, 6-foot-5 right-hander, Frazier was a star a Springfield, Missouri’s Hillcrest High School, where he played alongside two other future major leaguers in Bob Detherage and Keith Drumright. Although he was drafted in the 13th round by the Texas Rangers, Frazier instead enrolled at the University of Oklahoma before ultimately being picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the ninth round of the 1976 draft.

A year later, he was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for Buck Martinez, and soon blossomed into a reliable option out of the bullpen for manager Ken Boyer.

Frazier is remembered by Rockies fans as the team's color commentator from 1998 until 2015

Frazier dropped his ERA to an impressive 2.74 in 1980, but had his best season in the Bronx in 1981 after being traded Rafael Santana and posting a miniscule 1.63 ERA, while serving as Rich ‘Goose’ Gossage’s setup man.

Frazier made the first of two career World Series appearances that season, but pitched poorly, yielding seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings of work against the eventual-champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Worst of all, he became the first pitcher to lose three games in a single best-of-seven World Series.

As disappointing as that was, Frazier got a literal and figurative pat on the back from cantankerous owner George Steinbrenner.

‘It wasn’t your fault, kid,’ Steinbrenner said to Frazier, as retold by the reliever to the New York Times in 2011. ‘You’ll be a Yankee next year, don’t worry about it.’

Frazier was a Yankee the following season, and remained a solid option out of the bullpen for the battalion of managers who toiled under Steinbrenner’s wrath in the 1980s: Gene Michael, Bob Lemon, Gene Michael, Clyde King, and Billy Martin.

During that time, he built a rapport with Yankee legend and Oklahoma native, Mickey Mantle.

‘Mickey walks over and says, ”Hey, I heard you’re from Oklahoma,” so we visited for 15 or 20 minutes, and after the game, we sat and talked again,’ Frazier told the Times. ‘From that time on, Mickey kind of accepted me in as one of his buddies.’

In 1984, Frazier was dealt with outfielder Otis Nixon to Cleveland, who traded him four months later along with Rick Sutcliffe to the Chicago Cubs for a package that included slugger Joe Carter.

Frazier was dealt one last time in 1987, landing in Minnesota.

He would go on to pitch two scoreless innings in a World Series loss to the Cardinals, but the Twins would ultimately win the title in the title in seven games, and Frazier would never pitch in the majors again.

Frazier later returned to the World Series as an announcer with the Rockies in 2007, as the team fell to the Boston Red Sox.

His son, Parker, also had a professional baseball career, reaching Triple-A with the Rockies, White Sox and Diamondbacks organizations.

In 2011, Frazier described himself as fortunate to the New York Times: I wasn’t entitled to pitch in the 1981 World Series. I wasn’t entitled to pitch in the 1987 World Series. It was a privilege I had an opportunity to do that, and I still feel that every day.’

In a Wednesday evening vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill that punts government funding negotiations to the day before Christmas Eve.

Members of Congress voted 224 to 201 on a short-term spending deal that will keep federal dollars flowing through December 23.

Nine Republicans crossed the aisle to join Democrats in passing the bill – including outgoing Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

‘The legislation before us today is a simple date change that keeps the government up and running as we negotiate the details of final spending bills and complete the work of funding the government programs that meet the needs of hardworking Americans,’ House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro said before the vote.

The bipartisan bill now heads to the Senate, which must take action by Friday to avoid a government shutdown.

On Tuesday, lawmakers leading the spending talks finally announced a compromise that would cover a year of federal funding.

But negotiations over the so-called ‘omnibus’ bill have hit fierce opposition from Republicans in the House.

Earlier on Wednesday, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy called for a slightly longer resolution that would have funded the government until January 3 – when House control would turn over to Republicans.

‘The legislation before us today is a simple date change that keeps the government up and running as we negotiate the details of final spending bills,’ House Appropriations Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro said on Wednesday

He also knocked his GOP colleagues in the Senate for helping Democrats ‘jam through’ a year-long spending bill after leaders announced they ‘should’ be able to clear a deal to fund the government and avert a shutdown.

‘The majority right now wants to put a small continuing resolution to bump all the members up to days before Christmas to try to vote a package that cannot be written by two individuals will not be here,’ McCarthy said.

‘The people deciding it aren’t going to be held up to the voters,’ McCarthy said, referring to retiring Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

Unlike McCarthy, GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell is prioritizing a full-year spending bill, arguing a short-term deal would leave the military and other agencies in limbo.

‘The Democrats have been in power. They’ve had the House, the Senate and the presidency. They did not do their work. They should not jam us now,’ the California Republican said, noting that funding for fiscal year 2023 was meant to be passed at the start of the fiscal year, October 1.

If Congress fails to pass an omnibus bill this month, McCarthy said he would force Democrats to eliminate ‘waste and wokeism’ from government spending in 2023.

'We are 20 days before new members will be sworn-in,' McCarthy said, calling for a full-year spending bill to be pushed to next Congress

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., reached an agreement with his Republican counterpart Sen. Richard Shelby (Ala.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) to fund the government through the end of the current fiscal year. It still must pass both chambers, with a short-term funding bill set to expire Friday

The top House Republican signaled he did not want omnibus legislation and instead wanted 12 appropriations bills voted on and passed separately.

‘We are 20 days before new members will be sworn-in,’ McCarthy went on.

The GOP leader held off on criticizing McConnell for the deal, as he did last week on Fox News, and instead went after retiring GOP Sen. Richard Shelby.

‘We have two members leading appropriations who will not be here,’ he said, referring Shelby and Leahy.

Asked about McCarthy’s opposition to the omnibus bill, Shelby, R-Ala., told the Huffington Post: ‘He’s running for speaker, he’s supposed to say that.’

Last week McCarthy said on Fox that Republicans are ‘wrong’ to cut a year-end spending bill with Democrats.

‘Does that include McConnell?’ host Laura Ingram asked.

‘Yes,’ McCarthy said. ‘Why would you want to work on anything if we have the gavel inside Congress?’

McCarthy on Wednesday decried that House and Senate appropriators had announced they reached a deal without even revealing a top number.

‘We don’t even know what the baseline is yet. And they want to vote on it next week!’ he said.

McCarthy went on about the $31 trillion in national debt and noted the nation has paid $100 billion in interest on its debt this year.

‘Why would you feel comfortable moving forward? I don’t think this is a partisan issue.’

Meanwhile a group of top House and Senate appropriators announced that the outlines of a deal had been reached that ‘should’ be able to clear Congress – which would avert a shut-down crisis by dispensing with the need for short stop-gap bills.

They did not say how much money they had agreed on, providing no details in statements from three key appropriations negotiators, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, Republican Senator Richard Shelby and Democratic Representative Rosa DeLauro.

It all comes as lawmakers rushed to find a way to reach a deal before government funding runs out at midnight Friday, with lawmakers anxious to get home and avoid yet another chapter of holiday shutdown drama.

The White House has also been pushing for Congress to complete its spending work and pass the measure set to exceed $1.5 trillion, even as Biden hailed a drop in the annual deficit.

‘If all goes well, we should be able to finish an omnibus appropriations package by Dec. 23,’ said Shelby, the retiring top Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

House Appropriations ranking member Kay Granger, R-Texas, didn’t take part in the deal announcement. She attended McCarthy’s press conference to express her opposition to the deal.

The news came hours after the House began moving a stopgap spending bill to avoid a partial shutdown that would otherwise begin on Friday, providing time to pass the sweeping full-year bill, which was expected to include more than $1.5 trillion in funding and will run through the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2023.

DeLauro, who head the House Appropriations panel, said lawmakers would ‘work around the clock’ to complete the job.

A first, procedural vote on the stopgap legislation was set for Wednesday.

‘The experiences of the last decade show that those who risked shutdowns in order to make political points always lose in the end,’ said Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of New York on Wednesday. He called it ‘a roadmap for funding the government before the conclusion of the 117th Congress’ and said there was ‘still have a long way to go.’

‘Long-term continuing resolutions cheat our armed forces out of the resources and the certainty that our commanders and civilian leaders need to keep modernizing our forces, investing in crucial weapons, and outcompeting adversaries such as China,’ said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

The full year ‘omnibus’ bill is also expected to contain new emergency funds to aid Ukraine in its battle against Russian forces.

Ukraine could get billions more, after Biden asked Congress last month for $37 billion.

It also is expected to fold in an unrelated bill reforming the way Congress certifies U.S. presidential elections by reforming the Electoral Count Act.

Negotiators have mostly settled on a Defense funding totaling $858 billion – a 10 per cent jump from prior-year funding. There was a $26 billion difference between the two sides haggling over non-defense funding, the Hill reported.

Democrats wanted $813 billion, and Republicans wanted $787 billion in non-defense spending.

The latter is aimed at avoiding a repeat of the deadly turmoil of Jan. 6, 2021, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump tried to stop the certification of Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

Lawmakers, predominantly Democrats, have complained that Trump was able to exploit ambiguities in the law and wanted to underline the largely ceremonial role carried out by the vice president. In 2020, Trump wanted then-Vice President Mike Pence not to accept the electoral vote count.

McConnell said Republicans want work on the omnibus bill wrapped up by Dec. 22. ‘We intend to be on the road going home on the 23rd,’ he told reporters ahead of the agreement.

The House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday aimed at giving Puerto Rico freedom to choose whether it becomes a U.S. state or breaks off from the country completely.

Sixteen Republicans joined 217 Democrats for a final vote tally of 233 to 191.

The vast majority of GOP lawmakers were opposed to the bill. Several shared concerns directly with DailyMail.com just before the final vote.

The legislation would allow Puerto Rico to hold its first-ever binding referendum on its sovereignty status.

Puerto Ricans could choose to become America’s 51st state, break off in total independence or an independent country with ties to the U.S.

But its Thursday passage was largely symbolic. The bill now advances to the Senate, where it is unlikely to get 10 Republican votes that are needed to pass.

The GOP has long been opposed to Puerto Rico gaining statehood.

Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said at a public event recently that the territory gaining statehood ‘dilutes our power.’

But among the Republicans to celebrate the bill’s passage was Rep. Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon, Puerto Rico’s at-large representative in the House.

‘Today is a truly historic day for Puerto Rico. Ironically, it is also a perfect example of the island’s colonial reality,’ Gonzalez Colon said on the House floor just before the vote.

She noted that she represents a territory of 3.2 American citizens – ‘more constituents than anybody in this chamber.’

‘And yet, while we consider a bill I helped write, a bill that will directly impact the life of every citizen I represent, I still must rely and depend on everybody here because I cannot vote on the floor,’ Gonzalez Colon said.

‘Today Congress takes a step towards finally assuming its responsibility…to provide the people of Puerto Rico with an opportunity, a federally binding choice, to democratically decide our future.’

But two members of her caucus told DailyMail.com that they were opposed to the bill, accusing it of being rushed through the House at the end of Democrats’ lame duck majority.

A third, Rep. Randy Feenstra of Iowa, simply told DailyMail.com that he opposed the bill – but would not say why.

Both Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida and Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana told DailyMail.com that House Democrats should focus on other issues like the southwestern border crisis with their final days in the majority.

‘First of all, have we even deliberated Puerto Rican statehood here? No. Once again, Speaker Pelosi just tosses stuff on the floor at the last minute,’ Donalds said just before entering the House chamber.

'First of all, have we even deliberated Puerto Rican statehood here? No. Once again, Speaker Pelosi just tosses stuff on the floor at the last minute,' GOP Rep. Byron Donalds fumed in comments to DailyMail.com

‘First of all, have we even deliberated Puerto Rican statehood here? No. Once again, Speaker Pelosi just tosses stuff on the floor at the last minute,’ GOP Rep. Byron Donalds fumed in comments to DailyMail.com

‘There’s been no deliberation…I just think that’s the wrong way to go. Why are we doing this at the 11th hour of the 117th Congress?’

Asked what Democrats should focus on instead, Donalds said: ‘Securing the border.’

Banks spoke to DailyMail.com immediately after casting his ‘no’ vote. While he was in favor of Puerto Rican statehood on principal, the Indiana Republican shared reservations about how the bill was put together – and its implications for US taxpayers.

‘I’ve supported Puerto Rico- Puerto Rican statehood before. I’m concerned though, about how this is written – it would allow, for the way the vote would take place, to allow for Puerto Rico to become independent,’ Banks explained

‘And then the U.S. taxpayer obligation if that would happen.’

He instead urged the majority party to work on solutions to the growing border crisis – just as a COVID-era expulsion policy is on the cusp of expiring.

Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory since 1898 following the Spanish-American war

‘There’s a lot more that should be focusing on…Most importantly, the crisis at the border and the repealing of Title 42,’ he said.

Banks called the surging number of migrants trying to cross the border the ‘biggest humanitarian crisis in American history, that [Democrats’] policies are directly responsible for, and they’ve continued to completely ignore it and act like it’s not happening.’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a statement lauding the bill’s passage.

‘Today’s historic vote is a key step toward ensuring that Puerto Rico’s future is one of its own choosing,’ Pelosi said.

‘For more than a century, Puerto Rico has been governed under a political system imposed by outside forces rather than established by its own people.’

New House GOP majority PASSES rules package with only one Republican defection – allowing just one member to call a vote to oust the speaker, ending proxy voting and launching new select committees

  • The House of Representatives passed a rules package Monday night 220-213, with only one Republican defection, that of moderate Rep. Tony Gonzales
  • Another Texas Republican, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, did not vote
  • The package includes some, but not all, of the concessions McCarthy made to the group of 20 House Republican to win his speakership bid
  • It included the demise of proxy voting and virtual participation in Congressional committee meetings, which Democrats approved amid the COVID pandemic

The House of Representatives passed a rules package Monday night 220-213 with relatively little drama as the first order of business for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s new majority.

The 55-page package includes some, but not all, of the concessions McCarthy made to the group of 20 House Republicans to get his speakership bid across the line early Saturday morning and after 15 floor votes.

It includes the motion to vacate provision, which allows just one member to move to remove the House speaker – one of the top conservative demands.

It also does away with proxy voting and virtual participation in Congressional committee meetings – which Democrats put in place to deal with the spread of COVID in the Capitol complex.

Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Republican from Texas, was the only ‘no’ vote on the rules package Monday night. Another Texas Republican, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, did not vote

‘For far too long the House allowed members to do their jobs from home without ever setting foot in Washington,’ Republican Rep. Tom Cole said on the House floor.

Cole is taking over the chairmanship of the powerful House Rules Committee and went through some of the changes included in the rules package on the House floor before voting kicked off Monday night.

He noted that with Republicans taking over committee leadership, the select committee that had been investigating the COVID-19 pandemic would reorient and be focused on looking into COVID’s origins and how shutdowns adversely impacted the country.

The House Republicans are also creating a select committee on China competition, he said. They will also look into the so-called ‘weaponization’ of the Department of Justice.

The new rules included a number of provisions in line with fiscal conservatism.

Instead of what Democrats called ‘PAYGO’ – pay as you go – which required legislation that added to the deficit to come with tax increases or spending cuts, Republicans are instituting ‘CUTGO,’ which means only spending cuts can offset mandatory spending increases.

House Republicans doubled down on not hiking taxes by including in the rules package a threshold of three-fifths of the body to implement any new tax increases.

Republicans were also suspending the so-called ‘Gephardt Rule,’ which automatically raised the debt ceiling when a budget was passed.

They brought back the so-called ‘Holman Rule,’ which allows Congress to amend a spending bill by cutting programs, firing federal employees or reducing their salaries.

House Progressive Caucus leader Rep. Pramila Jayapal called it a 'rules package for MAGA extremists,' in a floor speech Monday night

All 212 Democrats voted against the rules package.

Only one Republican, moderate Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas, voted against it.

His fellow Texan, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, did not vote.

Moderate Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina ended up voting for the package after initially saying she was on the fence.

House Progressive Caucus leader Rep. Pramila Jayapal called it a ‘rules package for MAGA extremists,’ in a floor speech.

Monday marked the House’s first day back in session after Friday night and Saturday morning’s dramatic showdown that eventually allowed for McCarthy to capture the speakership.

The House is also voting Moday night on an IRS bill that rolls back money to hire more staff.

KEVIN MCCARTHY’S CONCESSIONS TO WIN HOUSE SPEAKER

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy finally earned his gavel after 15 rounds of voting last week. To win, however, he had to give into some major demands from 20 conservative dissenters. These concessions could lead to even more chaos with moderate Republicans at the start of the 118th Congress. McCarthy’s concessions include:

RESTORING THE MOTION TO VACATE

The motion to vacate allows any single member to call a vote to remove McCarthy as Speaker.

VOTING ON TERM LIMITS

A floor vote was secured to establish term limits for all House members, which is something lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pushed for in recent years.  There are currently no term limits.

GIVING FREEDOM CAUCUS MORE POWER

The conservative House Freedom Caucus will receive three of the nine seats on the powerful House Rules Committee, which has a huge say in whether bills and amendments are brought to the floor.

ENDING THE OMNIBUS

McCarthy agreed to vote separately on spending bills instead of bundling them into a massive omnibus bill like the $1.7 trillion one that passed in December 2022.

LOWERING SPENDING

Concessions cap government spending at lower levels implemented just two years ago. This means most programs will get cuts.

PROBES INTO PROBES

A new Judiciary subcommittee to focus on ‘weaponization of the federal government,’ that would investigate the FBI, the DOJ’s raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and Homeland Security.

In a last-minute deal on Friday, McCarthy also agreed to allow the select subcommittee access to information shared with the House Intelligence Committee — including ‘ongoing criminal investigations.’

DECREASE GOP PRIMARY CONTESTS

McCarthy agreed to keeping his Congressional Leadership Fund PAC money out of races against conservative members in safe districts.

REINSTATING THE HOLMAN RULE

The Holman rule allow amendments to  reduces lawmakers’ salaries, fire federal employees and cut programs.

ADDING TIME TO REVIEW BILLS

The concessions created a 72-hour review period to allow House members more time to review bills before they reach the floor

‘And I know that sounds really dramatic, but people are really serious when they say that. Her infectious, positive attitude actually changed the way other people live.’

Samantha’s loved ones also posted two beautiful photos of the star posing against a celestial background – as they announced her passing.

The post read: ‘Hello from the other side. Sam died on May 14th at 11:25am surrounded by her loved ones at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.

‘After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure.

Samantha was known for playing high school student Heather in the Carrie remake in 2013 – alongside stars  Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.

She also had roles in children’s cartoons  Gerald McBoing Boing and Babar and the Adventures of Badou and was doing voiceover work for cartoons in the weeks leading up to her death,

She broke through into acting aged just 10 years old in 2005’s Big Girl where she played Josephine – a role which made her the youngest-ever winner of an ACTRA Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female in 2006.

Samantha’s final Instagram post came on May 1 – which showed the actress enjoying her honeymoon with new husband Michael Knutson.

Samantha bravely documented her cancer and treatment journey on social media, detailing how she was first diagnosed aged 25 – after realizing she looked ‘strangely bloated’ while walking home from a friend’s house.

She wrote in a first person piece for Love What Matters: ‘It happened almost overnight. I was walking home from a friend’s house after drinking entirely too much red wine, when I noticed I looked strangely bloated.

‘I knew I wasn’t pregnant because I was single and celibate, having just left an emotionally abusive relationship four months previously. My roommate assured me her girlfriends got like this all the time and it was just ovulation… or something.

‘Spoiler alert – it was not ovulation or something.

‘I was 25 and in the best shape of my life. There was no history of cancer in my family. I had just finished filming a music video with my punk rock band, Killer Virgins, and we were a week away from releasing our first major single.

‘I was working as a full-time voice actor and living with a cool, hippie-earth-mama roommate and her two kittens. I was at the peak of what I assumed would be the rest of my life as a young creative in Toronto. Then, I started blowing up like Violet in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The next thing I knew, I was in the hospital under the disco-ball surgical light in the operating room, counting down from ten.

‘I spent four excruciating days in the hospital healing from a massive abdominal incision, most of which was spent hallucinating like Hypnotoad at Burning Man.

‘When the nurses made me walk on the third day, I dissociated for the first time, looking down at my body from the ceiling. I only knew what was going on because of YouTube (all that binge watching finally paid off!). After the surgery, my dad drove me back to my parents’ house to recover.

‘Many weeks later, my mom told me I had looked like a ghost when I first walked into their living room; I was so pale and rail thin. It took me weeks to sit up on my own and walk without a cane. I’d never dealt with chronic pain before, or needed to rely on hardcore pain meds.

‘ Every day was a struggle to keep my spirits up and not collapse into the blackhole that was my mind – What would happen to my health? My career? My life?’

She would later reconnect with her childhood friend Michael while in ‘crippling pain’ on Valentine’s Day – with her future husband sending her a Facebook message.

She wrote: ‘First dates were nerve wracking enough, but I had just received some devastating news the week before- it was cancer. Talk about scaring a guy off! There was something about him, though, that put me at ease.

‘Eyes fixed on the dirt ground of the dog park, I told him I’d been diagnosed with a rare ovarian germ-cell yolk sac tumor, and I’d be starting chemotherapy in just a few months.

‘I held my breath, squeezed my eyes shut, and waited for the inevitable rejection… but it never came. Michael smiled and squeezed my hand. His mother had fought cancer for eight years and had passed away two years ago. He was ready for this.

‘When my hormones were raging from IVF injections, we screamed at each other as we built an IKEA vanity and collapsed on the floor laughing. When my hair started falling out, we shaved our heads together.

‘When my fingers were turning black from nerve damage, he took me out for ice cream and held the cone. He taught me love is selfless and reminded me to let others take care of me too.’

WHAT IS OVARIAN CANCER AND WHAT ARE ITS SYMPTOMS?

Ovarian cancer is a cancer of the ovaries, which are part of the female reproductive system that contain their eggs. There are two ovaries and both are attached to the womb. Cancer on the ovaries can spread to the nearby bowel and bladder.

It is the eighth most common cancer among women, and is most common in women who have had the menopause but it can affect women of any age.

About 66 per cent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed in the more advanced stages of the disease.

At the time of diagnosis, 60 per cent of ovarian cancers will have already spread to other parts of the body, bringing the five-year survival rate down to 30 per cent from 90 per cent in the earliest stage.

It’s diagnosed so late because its location in the pelvis means the symptoms can be vague and difficult to recognise, particularly early on.

They’re often the same as symptoms of less serious conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).

The most common symptoms of ovarian cancer are:

  • Feeling constantly bloated
  • A swollen tummy
  • Discomfort in your tummy or pelvic area
  • Feeling full quickly when eating, or loss of appetite
  • Needing to pee more often or more urgently than normal

See your GP if:

You’ve been feeling bloated most days for the last three weeks

You have other symptoms of ovarian cancer that won’t go away – especially if you’re over 50 or have a family history of ovarian or breast cancer, as you may be at a higher risk
