Airport security officer ‘is caught stealing $300 from a passenger by swallowing the cash’

  • A screening officer in the Philippines has been caught allegedly stealing money
  • CCTV footage shows a female airport officer take $300 from a passenger’s bag
  • She then attempts to ‘swallow’ the dollar bills by placing them in her mouth

A screening officer of the Philippines’ Office of Transportation Security (OTS) was caught allegedly stealing $300 dollars from a passenger by ramming the bills into her mouth.

Authorities are now investigating the incident that took place at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in the country.

The female security officer took the passenger’s bag for manual inspection while the passenger walked through an X-ray scanner, according to the Manila Bulletin.

CCTV footage from September 8 showed the officer turn away while placing something into her waist area.

A report by airport authorities said the officer operating the X-ray machine was seen passing the screening officer a bottle of water – this officer was then seen attempting to swallow the bills.

According to the report she was ‘clearly seen deliberately swallowing the dollar bills, folded into one small piece’, and even ignored a passing passenger who tried to ask her something’.

‘She was seen to be having a hard time swallowing the bills despite drinking the bottled water earlier given to her,’ the report added.

The screening officer’s supervisor then approached her, while she ‘was seemingly communicating with her as the latter was obviously almost choking in her effort to swallow the dollar bills while using her hanky to cover her mouth,’ the report said.

In a statement on Monday, the OTS said that the identity of the security officer has been established.

‘Upon receipt of the information about the recent allegations of theft involving a Security Screening Officer (SSO) at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1, where cash amounting to three hundred (300) US dollars went missing, the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) took actions to validate the information and launch its fact-finding investigation.’

It emphasised that the incident does not reflect ‘the code of conduct for civil servants, much more of the core values’.

OTS Administrator Undersecretary Ma.O Aplasca encouraged informants to report illegal activities committed by OTS personnel.

Following the first reported theft at the security screening point, Mr Aplasca said  security measures were implemented, which included removing the jackets and searching pockets of security officers’ uniforms.

The staff members involved were immediately dismissed, prosecuted and reported to the public, Mr Aplasca said.

The footage has since been shared to Reddit, where hundreds of users have commented on the incident.

Some joked: ‘Omg money is filthy,’ and ‘She’s money hungry.’

Others questioned her technique: ‘I like how she stands directly in front of the security camera and then takes absolutely ages to finish the job.’

Prospective pilots can now apply for a place on a new British Airways scheme that will see the £100,000 cost of their training covered entirely by the airline.

The national flag carrier’s Speedbird Pilot Academy programme will lift the previously prohibitive cost barrier of training to become an airline pilot for up to 60 successful candidates a year – ‘helping to level the playing field and make a flying career a realistic option for all’, says British Airways.

Successful recruits will also have accommodation and food costs covered during their 16-month training period. Sean Doyle, British Airways’ Chairman and CEO, said: ‘The Speedbird Pilot Academy will make the ambition of becoming a British Airways pilot a reality for people who’d previously written the option off because of the cost barrier.’

British Airways’ Senior First Officer and former cadet Hannah Vaughan, 32, described the scheme as ‘groundbreaking’, and said it was important for the airline to attract the top applicants and remove barriers that may have put people off previously.

To encourage more applicants to apply, Hannah here ‘busts some of the current myths’ about becoming a professional airline pilot.

MYTH: You need to be rich to train as a pilot.

TRUTH: ‘This is false,’ says Hannah. ‘The British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy is entirely funded by the airline.’

MYTH: You can only become a pilot if you have a university degree.

TRUTH: ‘This is false – the new cadet scheme offers a great career without the need for a degree,’ says Hannah.

MYTH: You need to have A-Level qualifications to apply for a role as a pilot.

TRUTH: ‘A-Levels are not required,’ stresses Hannah. ‘You just need six GCSEs to apply to the cadet scheme. Six GCSEs grade A-C or 5-9 including maths, English and a science or equivalent qualification.’

MYTH: You need to be a maths or science genius.

TRUTH: ‘A lot of people think this, but it isn’t true,’ says Hannah. ‘As long as you meet the GCSE requirements, you can apply.’

MYTH: You need perfect eyesight – if you’re short-sighted you can’t apply.

TRUTH: ‘No, you can fly for commercial airlines with glasses or contact lenses,’ says Hannah.

MYTH: You have to be under 40 to apply.

TRUTH: ‘Anyone who will be between the ages of 18 and 55 when they start their training can apply,’ says Hannah. ‘Everyone has an equal chance of being successful.’

MYTH: If you’ve got no flying experience you’ve got no chance of being considered. You need a private pilot licence first to train as a commercial pilot.

TRUTH: ‘Having flying experience or a private pilot licence isn’t a requirement to apply for the cadet scheme,’ says Hannah. ‘That said, if you can, you may wish to try a short trial flight, which can be in a glider or light aircraft, to make sure that you enjoy the feeling of flying. There are many scholarships available which may help with this.’

WHAT BOOK would author and former police officer Clare Mackintosh take to a desert island?

. . . are you reading now?

Writing a thriller about a reality TV show has fuelled my obsession with programmes such as The Traitors and Married At First Sight, and my current read is Patricia Wants To Cuddle by Samantha Allen.

It centres on the four female finalists of a fictitious show called The Catch, and the eponymous Patricia, a misunderstood, wood-dwelling local.

Described by one reviewer as ‘the lesbian Sasquatch novel you’ve always wanted’, it’s funny, unexpected and just a little bit bonkers. I’m loving it.

. . . would you take to a desert island?

I’m a big fan of audiobooks and loved listening to The Seven Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.

The protagonist is a guest at a grand party at which a woman is murdered. Our hero relives the day of her death eight times, each time in the body of a different guest, in order to solve the mystery. Think Agatha Christie does body swap.

It’s a brilliant story and the audio was great, but I missed being able to flip back through the pages to remind myself of key points, so I’d take the physical book to my island and enjoy revisiting it.

. . . first gave you the reading bug?

Every addiction needs feeding, and there’s nothing quite like the hit of a series. For me, that was Richmal Crompton’s Just William books, and I remember the thrill of realising I’d saved enough pocket money to buy the next one.

Each chapter is a self-contained story, which made them the perfect bedtime read. I loved Violet Elizabeth (‘I’ll thcream and thcream ’till I’m thick!’) and William’s disdain for his older sister’s beaux.

All 38 books are still on my shelves, and I often dip into them.

If I ever tire of writing thrillers, I want to pen William as a 40-something married banker hitting a midlife crisis and bringing the Outlaws back together.

. . . left you cold?

As a teenager, I sobbed over the ending of Of Mice And Men and promptly declared John Steinbeck my favourite author (a position wrested from my previous favourite, Jilly Cooper; my reading was nothing if not eclectic).

It was a slightly premature decision, as I discovered when as I waded through The Grapes Of Wrath and wondered what all the fuss was about.

This award-winning novel is undoubtedly worthy and important, but I found it wordy and heavy going. My love affair had clearly been with Lennie and George, not Steinbeck himself, so I returned Jilly Cooper to her rightful position.

A Game Of Lies by Clare Mackintosh is out now (Sphere, £16.99).

An NHS midwife has been given a restraining order to stop her contacting her police officer ex after she left him needing ‘psychological support’.

Cecilia Hopkins, 53, fired off 20 angry messages to Custody Detention officer Jeremy King after the breakup, calling him a ‘thick’ and ‘stupid clown’.

Mr King claimed he needed mental support and took six months off work as a result of the abuse.

In her messages, filed over a ten-month period, Hopkins, from Latchford, Cheshire, told her ex: ‘I hope that you are feeling bad, stressed and useless.

‘I have not finished yet, you have no future, you are thick and stupid and a stupid clown.

‘Watch your back Jeremy King.

‘There is no hope for you at all, you are f*****,’ and ‘I will come to your parents, I’ve something to deliver.’

She was later charged with harassment after former PCSO Mr King, who currently deals with violent offenders on a daily basis with Merseyside Police, said he felt ‘vulnerable and intimidated because of the threats’.

In a statement he said: ‘Each day is a worry. Treatment and support from my employer is currently ongoing. My biggest concern is any contact with the offender. In my mind the offender still has the potential to carry out the threats.’

At Warrington magistrates, Hopkins denied harassment of Mr King between June 12 and October 23 of last year by sending abusive, threatening and insulting emails, but changed her plea to guilty on the day of her trial.

She faced dismissal from her job after sentencing guidelines suggested she should complete a community order – but is expected to be spared the sack after she was instead fined £934 with £800 in prosecution costs and told to pay a further £374 in victim surcharge.

She was further forbidden from contacting or approaching Mr King or going near addresses in Formby and Kirkby, Merseyside for 12 months.

Laura Simpson, prosecuting, said Hopkins and Mr King had been in relationship for five and half years but it ended in December 2021 for undisclosed reasons.

Miss Simpson said: ‘The defendant then sent a number of emails, 20 emails in total, to the victim which are considered as harassment. There were 20 emails in total with the same strain of content and Mr King stated that this whole incident has had a massive impact, a significant psychological impact.

In a statement Mr King said: ‘Each day is a worry. Treatment and support from my employer is currently ongoing’

‘For the past six months he has been receiving psychological support through his work. The victim works as a police detention officer. He said he is feeling vulnerable and intimidated because of the threats that have been made. The biggest impact has been on his relationships with friends, family and at work. He has taken six months off work due to the threats and after returning was not working full time in his role.

‘The victim has been caused distress. Under sentencing guidelines the starting point for this offence is a low-level community order.’

In mitigation Hopkins’ lawyer Peter Green said: ‘I ask that you give her some credit for her guilty plea on the day of trial. It is fair to say that Miss Hopkins has wrestled with this from fairly early on in the proceedings, from the first court appearance because this conviction could well have a massive impact on her and potentially end her career.

‘She is a specialist midwife. She has spoken to the professional body which has indicated to her that if she receives by way of a sentence more than a financial penalty, she will almost certainly lose her job. She has been a midwife and a specialist midwife for many years.

‘She was one of the NHS staff, obviously, who three years ago or so we were all clapping for on our doorsteps at eight o’clock at night. Up until now she has been a lady of good character. She had a relationship with Mr King but that relationship ended.

‘It is fair to say that Miss Hopkins made an allegation to police of a more serious nature against Mr King which the police and Crown Prosecution Service took no further action on. It was against that backdrop that this incident occurred.’

They added: ‘We also have a scenario where the defendant was looking after her elderly mother who was particularly infirm at the time. She took her mother at the end of September last year to Canada, to see her brother for the last time. Miss Hopkins was with her mother because no other family member wanted to do it because it was too much responsibility.’

‘She seems to be quite a good lady who just made a mistake. One of the problems with sending emails and text messages, such as those in this particular case, is that members of the public do not necessarily understand that they may be committing a criminal offence by doing that.

In her messages, filed over a ten-month period, Hopkins, from Latchford, Cheshire, told her ex: 'I hope that you are feeling bad, stressed and useless'

‘I think for someone in Miss Hopkins’ situation, one of the biggest points of mitigation is that, since October of last year when first interviewed by police or when police came to arrest her, Miss Hopkins has had this matter hanging over her. For seven or eight months, she has been worrying about what the outcome will be.

‘You will know that there are certain defendants you see in the dock who are not particularly bothered about what happens to them. They are not bothered if they go down the steps to custody, some view it as going to see their mates in HMP Altcourse.

‘She has viewed it very seriously, and is taking it very seriously. She sees the conviction as a stain on her character. That to me is punishment enough.’

‘People need to be punished, that’s the purpose of the court, but we do not want to destroy people. Everybody in this court today has made a mistake in their life though we do not necessarily all finish up in a criminal court. She has made a mistake but she can have a future.

‘She can get back on track. The emails were not particularly threatening. They were the sort of communication you would expect from a party when the relationship comes to an end.

‘The victim in this case is an employee of Merseyside Police and as a detention officer you would expect detention officers to deal on a daily basis with violent individuals not someone who sent 20 emails sent on the breakdown of a relationship. I will say no more than that.’

Sentencing Hopkins, JP Paul Chadwick told her: ‘In our sentencing guidelines the starting point is a low-level community order but Mr Green suggested an alternative of a fine. We are not going down the route of a community order as we have listened to Mr Green.

‘We have considered a number of factors. Your references and the victim personal statement for psychological distress suffered. Equally it was not one email, it was 20 emails and threats contained within them. But you are a lady of previous good character and you pleaded guilty on the day of trial. Mr Green has offered significant mitigation on your behalf in court today.’

Brooklyn mother-of-two, 37, is found stabbed to death on her bed by twin daughters a day before Mother’s Day – after ‘domestic dispute’

  • Theresa Gregg, 37, a mom of two 12-year-old twin daughters was found brutally murdered in her Williamsburg, Brooklyn apartment on Saturday morning
  • Gregg had been stabbed in her neck and body leaving a bloodstained mattress and a pool of blood on the bedroom floor

A mother-of-two has been found stabbed to death on her bed after an alleged domestic dispute in New York City.

Theresa Gregg, 37,  was found dead in her Brooklyn home having been stabbed several times in the neck and torso.

The homeless services officer, who had two pre-teen girls, had held a special officer position at the DHS since 2015.

Gregg’s 12-year-old twin daughters found their mother unconscious in her Williamsburg bedroom on Saturday morning at about 8.20am and immediately called 911.

They were met by a gruesome scene as their mom’s stab wounds left bloodstains on her mattress and a pool of blood had collected on the bedroom floor.

It’s believed the killing occurred after a violent argument involving her partner, although as of Sunday evening police had not yet named a suspect.

Neighbors said Gregg, who had lived in the block for about six years, could often be heard arguing loudly with her boyfriend, with both parties raising their voices.

‘I could hear them fighting, both of them yelling. They fight a lot. You can hear it pretty clear,’ said one neighbor the New York Post. ‘I’m not sure how often they fought but it was a lot.’

On Sunday, neighbors remained in shock after hearing about the incident.

Johanna Hidalgo, a resident living in the same block said she was shocked and noted how kind and polite Gregg’s daughters werem whom she would regularly encounter.

‘I was so shocked yesterday. Her daughters are so sweet – every morning, they good morning, they’re smiling. ‘So beautiful, so respectful,’ Hidalgo told The Daily News.

‘They were in middle school, they’re twins so they would walk to school with their friends… Those girls were so sweet.’

‘This is an absolutely heartbreaking tragedy. We are ever-grateful for Officer Gregg’s invaluable contributions and tireless dedication to serving and supporting vulnerable New Yorkers,’ a Department of Homeless Services spokesperson said.

The president of Teamsters Local 237, which represents Department of Homeless Services police officers, Gregory Floyd, also released a statement paying tribute.

‘We are saddened to hear about the murder of our DHS Officer in her home. She will be missed and we hope her assailant will be caught and brought to justice soon.’
