The first of several moments of silence at New York’s annual September 11 ceremony was rife with emotion Monday – as Americans mark 22 years since the attacks took thousands of lives in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Arlington, Virginia.

Moments before, in a taste of the ceremonies set to take place nationwide, officials in Virginia unfurled US flag on the west side of the Pentagon – the same site where one of the hijacked planes struck.

The attacks happened quickly – claiming nearly 3,000 lives and counting as illnesses to this day continue to affect first responders. The North Tower was hit at 8:46 am, then 17 minutes later the South. A third hijacked plane ripped a hole into the western side of the Pentagon at 9:37 am – leaving another 184 lives lost.

A flag has been unfurled at the site each year since – celebrating the bravery that was on display from first responders as well as countless Good Samaritans who jumped into action that day. There, Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were among those participated in a moment of silence at Monday morning’s ceremony.

Other commemorations currently being held stretch from the other attack sites, and to Alaska and beyond. Joe Biden is due at a ceremony on a military base in Anchorage, and Kamala Harris – in a rare public appearance – is currently at the procession at Ground Zero.

Others in attendance included Ron DeSantis and Michael Bloomberg – the successor to the mayor at the time of the tragedy, Rudy Giuliani. Despite recent legal woes, the man known as America’s Mayor made the time to attend, as did Mayor Eric Adams.

Also spotted in the crowd was New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who joined Harris in the crowd for the traditional name reading and the tolling of the bells.

In total, six moments of silence will be observed – commemorating when each of the towers was struck and collapsed, as well as the times corresponding to the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of United Flight 93.

The first was held after the tolling of the bells at 8:46am, which marks the beginning of the attacks – when hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into floors 93 through 99 of the North Tower. The impact killed all 92 on board.

At 9:03am, a second moment of silence was held – marking when hijackers deliberately crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 77 through 85 of the South Tower – leaving no doubt in any New Yorkers’ mind at the time that the attacks were planned and malicious in nature.

The next was at 9:37am, when another group of terrorists deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, just outside the nation’s capital.

A fourth was then held at 9:59am to mark the moment the South Tower, the second structure to be hit, collapsed, with another slated for four minutes later – to mark the moment passengers on United 93 heroically stormed the cockpit in a bid to retake the plane from their attackers.

In response, the hijackers crashed the plane into an empty field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania – likely saving many lives, as many theorized the plane’s target was either the White House or the Capitol.

The final moment of silent mourning, meanwhile, is slated for 10:28 am – the time that The North Tower collapsed, leaving the 16-acre World Trade Center site in ruins and the collective US consciousness in tatters.

However, across the country, the rescue effort commenced immediately – a taste of the resilience present in the heart of countless Americans in the centuries before, and after, the senseless tragedy.

The president’s visit, en route to Washington, D.C., from a politically driven trip to India and Vietnam, is a reminder that the impact of 9/11 was felt in every corner of the nation, however remote it may be.

On that day, ‘we were one country, one nation, one people, just like it should be. That was the feeling – that everyone came together and did what we could, where we were at, to try to help,’ said Eddie Ferguson, the fire-rescue chief in Virginia’s Goochland County.

More than 100 miles from the Pentagon and more than three times as far from New York, the site – like dozens of others across the US – share a sense of connection is enshrined in a local memorial incorporating steel from the World Trade Center´s destroyed twin towers.

The predominantly rural county of 25,000 people holds not just one but two anniversary commemorations: a morning service focused on first responders and an evening ceremony honoring all the victims.

Other communities across the country pay tribute with moments of silence, tolling bells, candlelight vigils and other activities.

In Shanksville, volunteers at the Flight 93 National Memorial were seen placing a wreath at the entrance of the memorial plaza early Monday, to honor the passengers who heroically stormed the cockpit forcing hijackers to crash in a field only a few miles from Washington, DC.

In Arlington, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin participated in a wreath laying ceremony to honor the 184 people killed at the Pentagon – the last of the tree crash sites.

In Columbus, Indiana, 911 dispatchers broadcast a remembrance message to police, fire and EMS radios throughout the 50,000-person city, which also holds a public memorial ceremony.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts raise and lower the flag at a commemoration in Fenton, Missouri, where a ‘Heroes Memorial’ includes a piece of World Trade Center steel and a plaque honoring 9/11 victim Jessica Leigh Sachs. Some of her relatives live in the St. Louis suburb of 4,000 residents.

‘We´re just a little bitty community,’ said Mayor Joe Maurath, but ‘it´s important for us to continue to remember these events. Not just 9/11, but all of the events that make us free.’

New Jersey’s Monmouth County, which was home to some 9/11 victims, made Sept. 11 a holiday this year for county employees so they could attend commemorations.

As another way of marking the anniversary, many Americans do volunteer work on what Congress has designated both Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

At ground zero, Harris – after facing criticism for a lack of public appearances for the past three years – joined famous faces in Giuliani, DeSantis, Hochul, and Bloomberg in the ceremony on the National September 11 Memorial and Museum plaza.

The event will not feature remarks from political figures, instead giving the podium to victims’ relatives for an hourslong reading of the names of the dead.

James Giaccone signed up to read again this year in memory of his brother, Joseph Giaccone, 43. The family attends the ceremony every year to hear Joseph’s name.

‘If their name is spoken out loud, they don’t disappear,’ James Giaccone said in a recent interview.

The commemoration is crucial to him.

‘I hope I never see the day when they minimize this,’ he said. ‘It’s a day that changed history.’

Biden, meanwhile, will be the first president to commemorate September 11 in Alaska, or anywhere in the western U.S.

Havin attended last year’s memorial in Arlington, he’s already facing criticism for the unprecedented decision not to mark the anniversary of 9/11 at one of the three crash sites.

Instead he will spend just two hours at Joint Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska with service members and first responders on his way home from a 24-hour trip to Vietnam dominated by a shambolic and rambling press conference.

He and his predecessors have gone to one or another of the attack sites in most years, though Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama each marked the anniversary on the White House lawn at times. Obama followed one of those observances by recognizing the military with a visit to Fort Meade in Maryland.

First lady Jill Biden is due to lay a wreath at the 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon.

In Pennsylvania, where one of the hijacked jets crashed after passengers tried to storm the cockpit, a remembrance and wreath-laying is scheduled at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoystown operated by the National Park Service. Harris´ husband, Doug Emhoff, is expected to attend the ceremony.

The memorial site will offer a new educational video, virtual tour and other materials for teachers to use in classrooms. Educators with a total of more than 10,000 students have registered for access to the free ‘National Day of Learning’ program, which will be available through the fall, organizers say.

‘We need to get the word out to the next generation,’ said memorial spokesperson Katherine Hostetler, a National Park Service ranger.

It was the trial watched, reviewed, and – perhaps – even skewed around the world. And now, the sensational legal battle between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard will once again be thrown into the spotlight as part of a bombshell new Netflix documentary.

The April 2022 courtroom tussle between the Pirates of the Caribbean star, 60, and the Aquaman actress, 37, had the nation gripped from the out – with millions tuning in to watch them face off in court over abuse claims that Amber made against Johnny in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.

Everything from Johnny and Amber’s outfits to their facial expressions were analyzed by people all across the globe, it seemed as though every gossip site had their faces sprawled across their homepages, and you couldn’t even open apps like TikTok or Twitter without seeing another post about it.

Almost everyone involved became social media sensations – Johnny’s lawyers were turned into celebrities practically over night, and many of those who testified were hailed as heroes by the millions who avidly observed every second.

A wild conspiracy theory even made its away around the web that Johnny and his attorney, Camille Vasquez, were having a secret love affair – which only fueled more interest in the case.

So what was it that sparked the public’s fierce obsession with the nasty court battle in the first place? Well, aside from involving two of Hollywood’s most elite, the trial contained a slew of bizarre moments that seemed to draw more people in every day.

At one point during the case, Amber’s lawyer accidentally objected to himself. And during another, a witness went viral after he issued an epic clap back to the mother-of-one’s legal team – after they accused him of only testifying because he wanted fame.

On top of the rumored romances, emotional outbursts, dramatic blowouts on the stand, and hilarious mishaps, Johnny and Amber’s bombshell accusations about one another throughout the six-week trial only added to the drama.

Arguably the most shocking moment was when Johnny alleged that Amber had pooped in their bed after they split – and he even provided images of fecal matter spread across his sheets.

The exes took every chance they could to hurl insults at one another. Every day, it seemed as though a another explosive revelation was brought to light and never-before-seen footage and images of the stars gave their fans a brand new look into the tragic and tumultuous relationship.

It was certainly a face-off that felt fit for screens, and now, it has become just that, as Netflix announced earlier this month that a new doc, called Depp v. Heard, will ‘examine the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention as the first Trial by TikTok, and question the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.’

As we prepare for the upcoming doc, which will premiere on August 16, FEMAIL went ahead and recapped the most untamed moments from the Johnny and Amber trial – which in the end saw the jury rule in favor of the Edward Scissorhands alum.

From the most surprising claims that the stars made about one another and the truth surrounding Johnny’s relationship with his lawyer to the star-studded celebrity who took to the stand to defend him and the strange animal that made an appearance – take a look back at the craziest things that went down during the highly-publicized case.

The explosive accusations: Johnny claimed that Amber POOPED in their bed after an argument – while she alleged that he did a ‘cavity search’ on her

Arguably the most bizarre was when the actor testified that his ex pooped in the bed they shared after they got into an explosive fight on April 21, 2016

Arguably the most bizarre was when the actor testified that his ex pooped in the bed they shared after they got into an explosive fight on April 21, 2016

Throughout the trial, both Johnny and Amber made a series of shocking accusations about one another.

When he asked Amber about it, he claimed the Amber said that her two dogs, Pistol and Boo, were to blame - but Johnny didn't believe it. She is seen with Boo in a throwback photo

Arguably the most bizarre was when the actor testified that his ex pooped in the bed they shared after they got into an explosive fight following a dinner for her 30th birthday on April 21, 2016.

He explained that Amber had released a ‘verbal barrage’ against him for being late to the celebration when they got home to their Los Angeles pad.

The star alleged that when he tried to leave, she ‘punched him in the face’ repeatedly before he was able to get out.

He then claimed that the next morning, his bodyguard sent him a photo of ‘human feces’ on the area that he sleeps.

‘On my side of the bed was human fecal matter,’ he told the court. ‘My initial response to that was, I mean, I laughed. It was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh.’

When he asked Amber about it, he claimed she said that her two dogs, Pistol and Boo, were to blame – but Johnny didn’t believe it.

She said that while packing to go away to the Coachella music festival, Heard left Boo in the bed, which appears to have been when the feces incident occurred.

‘She tried to blame it on the dogs. They’re teacup Yorkies. They weigh about four pounds each,’ Johnny (seen with Boo) said. ‘I lived with those dogs. I picked up their funk. It was not the dogs’

'Next thing I remember I was bent over backwards on the bar, I was staring at the blue light. My back was on the countertop. I thought he was punching me. I felt this pressure on my pubic bone'

When Amber took the stand herself days later, she denied the allegations and again insisted that it was caused by one of the canines, explaining that Boo has ‘bowel control issues’

‘She tried to blame it on the dogs. They’re teacup Yorkies. They weigh about four pounds each,’ he continued. ‘I lived with those dogs. I picked up their funk. It was not the dogs.’

A member of Johnny’s security team, Starling Jenkins, also testified that he accompanied Amber on a trip to Coachella the next day, and that he over heard her having ‘a conversation pertaining to the surprise she left in [Johnny’s] bed.’

He claimed her heard her call the incident a ‘horrible practical joke gone wrong.’

When Amber took the stand herself days later, she denied the allegations and again insisted that it was caused by one of the canines.

‘First of all, I don’t think that’s funny. I was not, also, in a pranking mood,’ she said. ‘I don’t know what grown women does… That’s disgusting.’

She added that Boo has ‘bowel control issues’ and that it was Johnny who had ‘attacked’ her during their argument, not the other way around.

Another surprising moment came when Amber claimed that Johnny performed a ‘cavity search’ on her.

Another surprising moment came when Amber claimed that Johnny performed a ‘cavity search’ on her while he was looking for cocaine

She said the incident occurred while they were on vacation together at a trailer park in Hicksville, California, near Joshua Tree, while the actor was searching for drugs.

‘He was looking for something. I went into the bathroom and as I come out he asked me where it is, and how long I’d been hiding it. I was like, “What you talking about?”‘ she testified.

‘[He said], “You know what I’m f**king talking about, be honest with me. Where are you hiding it.”

‘He starts patting me down, he ripped my dress. He’s grabbing my breasts, he’s touching my thighs, he rips my underwear off and then he proceeds to do a cavity search. He said he was looking for his cocaine, his coke.

‘He just shoved his fingers inside me. I just stood there staring at the stupid light, I didn’t know what to do. He twisted his fingers around. I didn’t stay stop or anything.’

Some of the other explosive allegations made during the trial included Amber accusing Johnny of sexually assaulting her with a liquor bottle, and him claiming that she severed his finger after she threw the glass container at him.

During the trial, Amber also shared a series of shocking pictures she said she took of Johnny while he was passed out due to intoxication.

‘He’d pass out, get sick, lose control of himself. People would pick him up and clean it and fix it,’ she said.

‘And he wouldn’t either remember, or he would deny it, or he would accuse me of saying that this had happened when it didn’t.

‘Wait – you asked the question,’ Judge Penney Azcarate responded, clearly confused. ‘Next question.’

‘Oh, OK,’ a stuttering Adam added, before continuing on with his questioning.

Johnny and his own lawyers appeared amused by the gaff and chucked to one another.

It resulted in an uproar of social media posts from people who mocked Adam over his mishap.

Courtroom romance? Many speculated that Johnny was having a secret love affair with his lawyer, Camille Vasquez, who became an internet sensation after she ‘annihilated’ Amber on the stand

Throughout the trial, many people on the internet became obsessed with Johnny’s lawyer Camille – thanks to her bold behavior in the courtroom, as well as her personal chemistry with the actor.

Fans even started to wonder if romantic feelings had developed between her and Johnny after they noticed a slew of flirty interactions between them – including whispering in each other’s ears, giggling together, and sharing coy smirks with one another.

In addition to her rumored romantic connection to Johnny, Camille received a lot of positive attention online after she cross-examined Amber on the stand, with some claiming that she 'annihilated' and 'obliterated' the star with her questions

Rumors of a budding romance were fueled after a video of the Pirates of the Caribbean star helping the lawyer untangle her iPhone charger went viral on TikTok. He was also spotted pulling out her chair for her.

However, body language expert Judi James explained exclusively to DailyMail.com during the trial that the amorous moments between them were most likely not due to a secret affair, but instead, were all part of a plan to make Johnny seem like a ‘romantic hero.’

She said that linking him to a ‘fresh, smart, fragrant, and confident-looking woman’ like Camille would ‘destroy’ Amber’s recount of their toxic relationship.

While Camille is very private when it comes to her personal life, some people on social media also pointed out that she appeared to wear an engagement or wedding ring during her court appearances.

In addition to her rumored romantic connection to Johnny, Camille received a lot of positive attention online after she cross-examined Amber on the stand, with some claiming that she ‘annihilated’ and ‘obliterated’ the star with her questions.

‘Camille Vasquez is definitely one of the best lawyers I’ve ever seen. She’s absolutely annihilating Amber Heard,’ wrote one person afterwards.

‘That was an obliteration,’ agreed someone else. ‘Camille Vasquez you queen.’

Another added, ‘This is what a real strong independent woman looks like. Camille’s intelligence and talent is so inspiring for women everywhere. She is a true example of strength facing evil.’

‘Camille Vasquez gave Johnny Depp the voice he never had against Amber Heard’s vicious claims,’ gushed a different user. ‘You can tell how much she feels for him and how much she wants justice for him.’

When Johnny’s ex Kate Moss took to the stand to defend him, it was said to be the final nail in the coffin for Amber.

Notoriously-private Kate put aside her infamous hatred of interviews and the media in order to rush to Johnny’s aid in court, delivering a sensational blow to Amber’s case by squashing the actress’ claim that Johnny once pushed her down a flight of stairs.

Amber made the claim while discussing an argument that she allegedly had with Johnny at the top of a staircase, when she said her sister, Whitney Heard, stepped in between them.

‘She threw herself in the line of fire. She was trying to get Johnny to stop. Her back was to the staircase, and Johnny swings at her,’ she said.

‘I don’t hesitate and wait – I instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs, and I swung at him.’

But Kate, who dated the Hollywood heartthrob from 1994 to 1998, testified that Johnny actually helped her after she accidentally slipped and fell down the stairs during a trip they took to Jamaica together.

‘We were leaving the room and Johnny left the room before I did. There had been a rainstorm and as I left the room I slid down the stairs,’ she recalled. ‘I hurt my back, and I screamed because I didn’t know what had happened.’

She said Johnny came running back to help her, adding that he ‘carried her to her room and got her medical attention.’

Many viewers of the trial were quick to notice that the exes' kept smiling throughout Kate's testimony, and they started to suggest that the pair should date again

When asked directly by Johnny’s team if the Pirates of the Caribbean star ever pushed her down the stairs, Kate replied, ‘No.’

‘No, he never pushed me, kicked me or threw me down any stairs,’ she told the court.

The actor and the British entrepreneur were together for just over three years in the ’90s, and when Johnny dumped Kate so he could focus his full attention on his career, she admitted she was devastated for ‘years’ over the breakup.

However, when she took the stand to defend her ex in court, it appeared as though she had nothing but warm feelings towards him, smiling at the mere thought of her past love with the movie star.

Johnny also struggled to contain his joy, letting out a small grin as she spoke to the court room about their ’90s romance.

Many viewers of the trial were quick to notice the exes’ happy compositions throughout the testimony, and they started to suggest that the pair should date again.

Some social media users became convinced that they were going to reignite their former flame, and the internet was flooded with tweets from enthralled Twitter users who called Kate his ‘true love.’

Witnesses turned into celebrities: Many of the people who took to the stand became viral sensations – most notably, the ex TMZ reporter who delivered a ‘savage burn’ to Amber’s lawyer

The trial saw tons more witnesses take to the stand to defend each side, including doctors, experts, friends, and family members – and there were a few other standouts who went viral for the things they said or did while testifying.

He insisted that he ‘gained nothing’ from speaking out, and fired back at the lawyer by telling her that he could ‘say the same thing’ about her taking Amber as a client.

‘I am aware that there are cameras,’ he responded.

‘So this gets you your 15 minutes of fame, doesn’t it?’ she then suggested.

‘I stand to gain nothing from this. I’m actually putting myself in the target of TMZ, a very litigious organization and I’m not seeking any 15 minutes here,’ he fired back.

‘But you’re welcome to speculate. I can say the same thing – by taking Amber Heard as a client – for you.’

The journalist’s ‘savage burn’ quickly went viral, and many social media users started vehemently supporting the former TMZ staffer.

Another viral moment came when clinical psychologist Shannon Curry took to the stand, and had to beg Amber’s lawyer to stop questioning her about muffins during a bizarre turn of events.

The actress’ attorney Elaine tried to claim that Dr. Curry, who was hired to evaluate the stars’ relationship in 2021, was ‘so excited’ to work with the stars that she told her husband about it despite it being ‘highly confidential.’

Elaine said she could prove that Dr. Curry broke the confidentiality rules because she brought Amber some muffins that she said were courtesy of her husband when they met up in December 2021.

‘May I clarify what occurred so that we can stop talking about the muffins?’ the psychologist snapped to Elaine after she made the accusation.

‘What happened was, I was getting ready that morning, I frequently bring muffins to the office.

‘My husband did happen to know that there was going to be a celebrity client coming in because on the morning that that occurs, which often occurs, we have to actually clear the office and move the staff to the other office.

‘So yes, on the one hand, he was aware of that. I was getting ready, I asked him to go to the bakery near our house and pick up the muffins for me because I was running late – he often has to do that because I often do run late.

‘He brought the muffins back to the house, I brought them into the office, Ms. Heard and I enjoyed the muffins together.

‘I think I made a comment to her along the lines of “my husband got these for us today,” meaning he purchased the muffins we are now enjoying them because of him.’

Just two climbers tried to help a dying sherpa on the world’s second highest mountain as fellow mountaineers edged around.

Muhammad Hassan, 27, lay seriously injured 1,300ft from the summit of K2 after slipping in a bottle neck area of the mountain on July 27.

The father of three was said to have ‘slipped and stayed hanging’ with a rope and couldn’t ‘talk or even hear’ as he waited for help.

The expedition was his first working with the group Lela Peak Expedition though it isn’t known whether it was his first as a climber.

Anwar Syed, of Lela Peak Expedition, told Mail Online that two climbers ‘tried their hardest to bring him down but they couldn’t do it and he passed away after two hours’.

The expedition group claims it offered payment to other porters to retrieve the body but ‘everyone said that it’s impossible to bring him down’.

Mr Syed said that Mr Hassan was much higher up than three climbers whose bodies were previously deemed unrecoverable from the mountain in Pakistan.

Fellow mountaineers have accused climbers of being more interested in setting records than saving the life of the porter.

Instead of helping him, fellow climbers went up the side of the mountain and past him

Footage shows dozens of fellow climbers carefully edging towards him, risking their lives as they clung to the side of the narrow ledge.

They then clambered around the stricken 27-year-old as they continued up the mountain.

A mountaineer’s code of ethics: What should Hassan’s fellow climbers have done to help him?

The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) warns that all climbers practice their sport at their own risk and are responsible and accountable for their own safety.

Providing advice for mountaineers, the group – considered the international governing body of climbing and mountaineering – warns that ‘all participants in mountain sports should clearly understand the risks and hazards’.

While the organisation does not explicitly state how or if the fellow climbers should have helped Hassan – especially considering they may have put themselves at risk – they are advised to be ‘ready to help others in the event of an emergency or accident and also be ready to face the consequences of a tragedy’.

Kristin Harila, a Norweigian mountaineer who passed by Hassan, said she and her team had done everything they could to help him but the conditions on K2 were too dangerous.

Norway’s Kristin Harila and her team who passed by Hassan are among those who have been criticised.

She is also accused of holding a party shortly after clinching the record that saw her climb 14 of the world’s highest peaks in just over three months – despite Hassan’s death.

She has claimed that she and her team did everything they could to help Hassan but the conditions on K2 were too dangerous to move him.

But mountaineer Philip Flämig, an Austrian who was climbing with Wilhelm Steindl, said footage the two recorded using a drone shows a trail of climbers walking over the stricken body instead of helping Hassan.

‘He is being treated by one person while everyone else is pushing towards the summit.

‘The fact is that there was no organised rescue operation although there were Sherpas and mountain guides on site who could have taken action.’

He called the death a ‘disgrace’ and said ‘such a thing would be unthinkable in the Alps’ – referencing the ongoing debate about how Sherpas are used in the Himalayas.

‘If he had been a Westerner, he would have been rescued immediately. No one felt responsible for him,’ he told the Austrian publication.

‘A living human was left lying so that records could be set.’

Harila defended her actions to The Daily Telegraph, saying ‘we did all we could for him’.

She added: ‘It is simply not true to say that we did nothing to help him. We tried to lift him back up for an hour and a half and my cameraman stayed on for another hour to look after him. At no point was he left alone.’

She said that given the conditions it was unlikely he could be saved as he had fallen on to what was ‘probably the most dangerous part of the mountain where the chances of carrying someone off were limited by the narrow trail and poor snow conditions’.

The footage of the fatality last month shows people physically climbing over Hassan as he lies helpless in the deep snow.

The video then pans over to show clouds several thousand feet below them, revealing just how high they were when the footage was taken.

The air is so thin at this elevation that all people seen in the video were wearing oxygen masks.

It appears that just one person ended up helping him, an unknown rescuer who managed to keep him conscious for a while before he died of his injuries. There was no rescue operation to help the young man.

Steindl, who participated in the climb but had returned to the base camp earlier due to the dangerous conditions, also told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he was sickened by the inaction of the fellow climbers.

‘It was a very heated, competitive race to the top. What happened there is scandalous.

‘A living person is left behind so records can be set. It only took 3 or 4 people to save him. Had I seen it, I would have climbed up to help the poor man.’

Despite these strong claims, differing accounts of the tragedy have circulated, leading to uncertainty over exactly what took place all the way up K2.

Lakpa Sherpa, a mountaineer who was on the climb and took the video, told MailOnline that the footage doesn’t capture what actually happened:

‘Some of the climbers and Sherpas tried to save his life although he passed away.

‘The climbers have all spent a lot of money to do this climb and there is the value of time too for the climb. Hundreds of climbers tried to save him but they cannot give up their mission.

‘The reality is they have tried to save the life and this is below the great serace bottle neck, where it’s impossible to cross without rope so it’s a very difficult situation.

‘Many climbers and sherpas told him to go back as he had very poor equipment and was not well equipped and also there was very bad weather during the summit window but he did not listen and then he fell down.

‘It was very difficult to bring the body down. They have to summit the mountain. There’s only a little chance for them.’

Bulgarian climber Silvia Azdreeva, who was on the trip when Hassan died, said in a Facebook post that climbing K2 is not for the faint-hearted: ‘On K2 there is no one to save you that fast, you’ll have to wait for days if something happens to you.

‘This mountain is not for everyone. K2 has a very heavy character.’

K2 – pictured from overlooking town Askole in the Gilgit–Baltistan region of Pakistan – gained notoriety as the ‘Savage Mountain’ after American mountaineer George Bell descended from the peak in 1953

Shockingly, Wilhelm Steindl claimed that a party was held shortly after Mr. Hassan died in celebration of Kristin Harila, a Norwegian woman who set a new world record after she climbed the 14 of the world’s highest peaks in just over 3 months.

‘I didn’t go, I was disgusted. Someone had just died up there,’ the furious climber said.

He revealed in a GoFundMe set up for Mr. Hassan’s family that he leaves behind three children and a wife, as well as an elderly grandmother.

At time of publication, the page has already raised £63,000.

The newly-crowned world record holder Kristin Harila said of the tragedy: ‘My heart and thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Hassan and I feel very sad about this whole situation.’

K2 is considered to be the world’s most dangerous mountain as it has a fatality rate of around 19 per cent compared to just 6.5 per cent on Everest, according to estimates.

For every 20 people who summit Everest, only one summits K2 and there are inherently more risks.

Routes on K2 are not as defined or well laid out with the climb being much more technical with a combination of rock, ice and alpine climbing – and avalanches are also much more common.

The mountain gained notoriety as the ‘Savage Mountain’ after American mountaineer George Bell came down from the peak in 1953 where he nearly slipped to his death.

‘It’s a savage mountain that tries to kill you,’ he observed following his traitorous climb.

Kai Havertz took to social media to vent his frustration over the fact his Arsenal unveiling video had been leaked before he had confirmed his departure from Chelsea.

Havertz – who has become Mikel Arteta’s first signing of the summer – said he would have preferred more time to tell the Chelsea fans he was leaving before his transfer to Arsenal was announced.

The German said he was ‘upset’ the Chelsea fans had to learn of his £65million transfer through a leaked video and insisted it wasn’t how he would have done it but thanked them for their support.

Havertz said Chelsea will remain in his heart forever after creating ‘memories that will last a lifetime’. The German also said he made ‘friends for life’ after joining the Premier League giants in 2020 under Frank Lampard – who was the manager at the time.

Havertz said ‘it was an honour to be a part of Chelsea history’ and insisted he would continue to care about the club going forwards – despite expressing his excitement about joining Arteta’s side.

Havertz wrote the following caption on Twitter: Dear Chelsea FC, I would have preferred for you to hear my thoughts on leaving Chelsea first from myself before my thoughts on me joining my new team.

‘This isn’t my style and it upsets me that you had to hear of it in this way. I write this letter with a heavy heart to all the fans. A big thank you for all your support, we achieved a dream of winning the Champions League together! Kai.’

He shared the following statement alongside it: ‘Today, I find myself at a crossroads, where words can’t describe the emotions I’m feeling. It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter, saying goodbye to the club that has become my second home and to the fans who have supported me throughout this amazing journey.

‘Together we have experienced the highs and lows, the joys and the heartaches. I want to thank each and every Chelsea supporter, member of staff, coaches and my team-mates for the last years.

‘Joining Chelsea three years ago was a big moment in my life and I’m looking back on these years with nothing but pride, gratefulness and lots of sport success.

‘From winning the Champions League in my first season, to winning the Super Cup and the Club World Cup and now saying goodbye. It’s been quite a journey that I will never forget.

‘Everyone second of my time at Chelsea, I identified with what it means to represent the club on and off the pitch. I hope that everyone remembers me for this. I’m looking back at the memories that last a lifetime. The club will be forever in my heart and I made friends for life.

‘It was an honour to be a part of Chelsea history. Thank you, Kai.’

Nevertheless, Havertz is excited about his new adventure and praised the ‘mentality’ within the Arsenal squad.

‘It’s super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family. This club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of things,’ Havertz, who will wear the No 29 shirt, said.

‘The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently.

‘The aim is to win trophies and I’m going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club. I’m now looking forward to meeting all the players and the staff when we come back for pre-season.’

Havertz moved to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen for £75m back in 2020 after breaking through and starring for the Bundesliga side.

He has been a regular at Stamford Bridge, featuring across the front-line, and he spent most of last season as the Blues’ striker amid their struggles up-front.

In total, Havertz racked up 139 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals and adding 15 assists.

A ruthless gang of meth-fuelled vigilantes menaced their victim with a chainsaw while trying to force a confession out of him for crimes he did not commit.

Father-of-eight Bradley ‘BJ’ Lyons was tortured and executed after being betrayed by his meth-addled wife Jana Hooper, who falsely accused him of sexually assaulting her daughters.

Video obtained by Daily Mail Australia shows Hooper leading her husband to his death after ‘giving the nod’ for thugs to enter their house in Lakes Entrance, in Victoria’s east, and attack him.

The countdown to execution as Bradley Lyons was abducted, tortured and then killed

CCTV captured from a neighbour’s property showed Mr Lyons follow his wife into their home blissfully unaware of the horrors about to befall him.

He would not be seen alive again after being stuffed into the boot of his soon-to-be killer’s car and driven away.

‘The cat’s in the bag,’ Albert Thorn told the girlfriend of his co-accused Jordan Bottom, who along with Rikki Smith was found not guilty last week of Mr Lyons’ murder.

Jessica MacFarlane, the then-girlfriend of Bottom, had been living in a caravan with him on Thorn’s Nyerimilang farm when he arrived with Mr Lyons still trapped in the boot of his car.

Ms McFarlane told the Supreme Court of Victoria jury Thorn had claimed to have had Mr Lyons trapped in the car’s boot for up to 21 hours under the baking summer sun.

Thorn, 57, was found guilty this month of the torture, imprisonment and murder of Mr Lyons.

‘I walked over to the car that was parked under the tree, and tapped on the boot, and ah, I heard someone scream in the back of the car,’ Ms McFarlane told the jury.

Asked what she heard, Ms McFarlane provided a chilling response.

‘Get me out of here, or kill me now,’ she said.

Thorn had been the leader of a vigilante gang with a very specific hatred for paedophiles.

Such was Thorn’s hatred for paedophiles, he tattooed the gang’s name, Australian Freedom Fighters, across his entire back and posted photographs to Facebook.

It had been spurious intel provided by Hooper, who shared three biological children with Lyons, that lit Thorn’s fuse.

In December 2018, Hooper told Thorn she believed Mr Lyons was the father of her 16-year-old daughter’s child and had also made her 14-year-old daughter pregnant.

The court heard it was a straight-out lie.

On Sunday, December 2, 2018, Thorn and his gang raided Mr Lyons’ home in what was supposed to be an idiotic attempt to beat a confession out of him.

Aided by another mate, Alec Harvey, and Thorn’s drug-addled lieutenant, Nicholas Stefani, the men ran into Mr Lyons’ bedroom and each punched him in the face and head.

Harvey struck him with a metal pole and Smith lashed out while holding a cigarette lighter between his fingers as a knuckle duster.

Stefani forced the barrel of the shotgun into Mr Lyons’ mouth and threatened to kill him if he didn’t confess to the sexual assault allegations.

CCTV shows Harvey and Smith run from the home, with Smith falling out of the getaway vehicle driven by yet another mate, Jayden Ball.

Mr Lyons was eventually dragged out of the boot of Thorn’s car to an old shed on his property where things went from bad to worse for the terrified dad.

The court heard Thorn was giddy with excitement.

‘I could see Bert getting really turned on and getting some sort of pleasure from this,’ Ms MacFarlane told the jury.

What happened next is not exactly clear through the cloudy haze of meth-induced accounts that followed.

One account had the men sawing Mr Lyons’ hand off.

The jury was told only 93 per cent of Mr Lyons’ skeleton was recovered, with both feet, bones from his hands and a neck bone missing

What is clear is that Mr Lyons was subjected to hideous torture that left him on the brink of life.

During Stefani’s sentence in December over his role in the crime, the court heard a chainsaw was among the gang’s torture tools.

‘A chainsaw was held over his head to make him talk, he was punched, hot water from a kettle was poured on him, and Deep Heat was put on his body,’ the court heard.

Stefani later told one of Hooper’s own daughters that at the farm, a chainsaw had been held over Mr Lyons and that they kept making him ‘piss himself’.

‘You said that you and others had held a chainsaw over Lyons’ head trying to get him to confess, and that he had been made to piss himself,’ Justice Andrew Tinney said.

‘You said to one of the girls that it was your expectation that before the end of the night, Lyons would have the tattoos of the girls’ names cut off him and would “be a few knuckles down”.

‘You told one of the girls that it made you sick what you “had to do”.’

When they were done, by all accounts without having extracted a confession, Mr Lyons was stuffed back into the boot of Thorn’s car.

With towels taped around his head and his hands bound, Thorn, Smith and Bottom drove out into the wilderness along a dirt track near Double Bridges.

There Mr Lyons was made to wait while a shallow grave was dug.

When it was ready, Thorn blasted Mr Lyons in the leg with a .410 shotgun cartridge.

On his knees, another shot was put into the back of his skull.

Bottom would later lead police to the burial site, which had a large log dragged over it.

A single shotgun cartridge remained at the scene.

The court heard the men had celebrated their crime, holding a party at Thorn’s property in which Mr Lyons’ own wife and children attended.

‘It looked like they were celebrating,’ Ms MacFarlane told the jury.

‘Jana was drinking, but I thought – it was a bottle of whiskey or something and they were (cheering), like – yep.’

Hooper was jailed last year for seven-and-a-half years and will be eligible for parole after serving just four-and-a-half.

Smith, 26, and Bottom, 25, were found not guilty of Mr Lyons’ murder, but the pair were found guilty of his assault and false imprisonment

Thorn will face a pre-sentence hearing later this year.

A British Airways stewardess left passengers ‘traumatized’ after activating the emergency slide moments before take-off on her maiden flight with the airliner.

The bungling worker cost BA £50,000 following the ‘scary’ gaffe at Heathrow Airport, which delayed passengers for more than five hours.

The rookie crew member had been on her first flight on one of BA’s Airbus A350 jets when she accidentally opened the rear emergency door on Sunday afternoon.

The plane had been on taxing onto the runway and was minutes from take-off to Austin, Texas, when its emergency slide inflated, leaving passengers horrified.

Dr Sridevi Rao claimed to be one of the travellers on the plane and said she had been left ‘traumatized’ by the debacle.

Writing on Twitter, she said: ‘I was in the very back row by the door when it flew open as we were moving towards the runway. It was so loud and scary as the cabin depressurized and the slide inflated. #traumatized #BritishAirways.’

The stewardess’s error sparked a major response from emergency services, who rushed to Terminal 5 to surround Flight BA191.

The jet reportedly had to be replaced and a new emergency slide found for the original Airbus.

The shocked crew member was ‘stood down’ from all duties by BA and ordered to go back to training, reports The Sun.

A source told the paper the delay cost the airliner £50,000 before adding: ‘The stewardess has had a shocker.’

The incident comes months after a similar gaffe in January, which saw the exact same thing happen on a BA flight to Lagos.

Speaking of Sunday’s debacle, a spokesman from British Airways said the passengers involved in it had all ‘disembarked normally’.

‘We arranged a replacement aircraft for them to continue their journey the same day and have apologised for the inconvenience caused,’ he added.

ROYALS

THE THRONE: 1,000 YEARS OF BRITISH CORONATIONS

by Ian Lloyd (History Press £16.99, 244 pp)

Coronations might well be intended as solemn occasions — the crown brought from the High Altar and handed to the Archbishop of Canterbury; the peers and clergy knelt in homage — but such are the mishaps, the ceremonies can in practice be more like Carry On films.

At William the Conqueror’s Coronation in 1066, the guards outside, ‘hearing the tumult of the joyful crowd’, thought there was a riot starting, so torched nearby buildings, ‘presumably as a distraction’, Ian Lloyd tells us in this marvellous study. The congregation rushed outside, seeing the chaos as ‘an ideal opportunity to do some looting’.

At George VI's Coronation in 1937, a dean fell backwards down the steps when carrying the crown

Richard III, the hunchback, ‘just to be on the safe side’, protected his person with 6,000 troops.

King John, in 1199, treated the ceremony with ‘unseemly levity’, and left before the end. Edward II’s gay friend Piers Gaveston insisted on giving the monarch ‘kisses and repeated embraces’, and was wearing more jewellery than the queen. On one occasion, the wall behind the High Altar fell down, killing a Knight of the Bath.

George III’s queen was locked out of the Abbey, so went home. During a lull, the congregation opened their picnic hampers. George’s ceremony continued to the tinkling of glass and rattle of cutlery, as everyone consumed meat pies. At Queen Victoria’s do, which lasted five hours, lords were to be seen, coronets askew, ‘knocking back champagne’.

Victoria hadn’t bothered to rehearse and people tripped over her robes. The bishops kept losing their place in the Order of Service. The Archbishop jammed the Coronation Ring on the monarch’s wrong finger, causing her to yelp. In the procession back to Buckingham Palace, Victoria wasn’t amused by the ‘distressing oscillations’ of the Gold State Coach. Back in 1274, Edward I’s royal procession had lasted 16 days, as the route took in Tonbridge and Reigate.

At Edward VII’s Coronation, in 1902, the Archbishop put the crown on backwards. Clearing up afterwards, ushers found ropes of pearls, bracelets and ‘twenty gold balls knocked off coronets’ abandoned in the pews. During the procession, the royal princes, aged 11 and eight, had a fight in a carriage. At George VI’s Coronation, a dean fell backwards down the steps when carrying the crown.

Traditionally, there was a huge feast afterwards, the festivities, including jousting, lasting a week. Edward I ordered 60 oxen, two boars, 40 pigs and 22,460 chickens, plus swans and peacocks.

At Henry VIII’s banquet, there were servants crawling underneath the table, their task being to assist the ladies to ‘urinate when required’. Queen Mary Tudor, who scowled throughout her Coronation, ‘rested her feet on two of her ladies’, whose sole job was to be an uncomplaining human footstool.

During the Restoration (1660), the ‘dancing, leaping and solemn minstrelsy’ grew out of hand, and as Pepys wrote in his diary, ‘We drank the King’s health, and nothing else, till one of the gentlemen fell down stark drunk, and there lay spewing’. We’ve all been there.

Coronations were generally money-no-object events, much to the disgust of William IV, who in 1831 said that the whole affair was ‘a useless and ill-timed expense’. He had in mind his elder brother George IV, who had spent £25,000 on his Coronation clothes alone.

The biggest bill was submitted to the Exchequer by Charles II, who had to re-make the regalia, which had been melted down and sold by Cromwell. The new Imperial State Crown consisted of 890 diamonds, ten rubies, 20 emeralds, 549 pearls and 18 sapphires, at a cost of £1.8 million.

Henry IV’s ermine cap was infected with lice and he went bald. William III had an asthma attack, while George I was surrounded by his mistresses.

Laden with sceptres and orbs, rings, swords and spurs, the monarch had to climb 20 steps to a dais and perch ‘high above the congregation’ on the Coronation Chair, which holds the Stone of Scone — stolen by Scottish Nationalists in 1950 and recovered in time for Elizabeth II’s ceremony in 1953. The Met Office had recommended the date for guaranteed good weather. It poured down.

The velvet and satin robes can be a trial, the trains so heavy they can’t easily be lifted off the ground. Charles I had a circus strongman underneath, ‘bearing the brunt of the load on his head’.

The royal family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace September 12, 1937 after the coronation of King George VI

Queen Caroline, in 1767, had a special pulley system to lift up her jewel-encrusted skirt. ‘Ready, girls?’ said Elizabeth II, her 18ft velvet cloak carted by six strapping Maids of Honour. Charles II later gave his Coronation outfit to a theatre, for use as a costume.

Lloyd is to be commended for knowing his way around British regal history, the blood feuds, usurpations, religious schisms and dynastic complexities. In short, family conflicts are nothing new, reflected in who’s invited to the Abbey, who is left out, who snubs the whole show.

I liked hearing about King Stephen, crowned in 1135, who had nine sons and 13 daughters, ‘all of them illegitimate’.

I was also surprised to learn how young our monarchs were on Coronation day. Elizabeth II, at 27, was almost elderly beside Richard II (ten) and his wife Isabella (seven). Henry III’s wife was 12. Henry VI was ‘a month short of his eighth birthday’. Henry VIII was 17, his heir, Edward VI, was but nine. James VI of Scotland was anointed at the age of 13 months.

King Charles III, at 74, is as venerable as King Lear. Let’s hope he doesn’t start racing about the place fantastically dressed in wild flowers, howling at storms, telling old tales and laughing at gilded butterflies. Except maybe these are antics he gets up to already?

Carried away to be raped and murdered…after being sold by her mother for £10 of crack cocaine: Tragic last moments of three-year-old girl who suffered the ultimate betrayal

  • Luz Maida, three, was sold to her mother’s drug dealer boyfriend for cocaine
  • Tragic CCTV footage shows her being carried away before she was murdered

When three-year-old Luz Maida was woken up in the middle of the night by her mother and thrust into the arms of a strange man, she could not understand what was happening.

And the truth is almost too horrifying to comprehend, as the little girl had just been sold by her mother to her drug dealer boyfriend in return for £10 worth of crack cocaine.

Chilling CCTV footage shows Luz being carried away in the early hours of Friday morning in Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay, by the boyfriend of her mother Aurelia Salinas, 42, before she was raped and murdered.

Just over 24 hours later, Luz’s bloodied body was found by horrified neighbours inside an abandoned house.

Luz, who was often seen wearing a blue dress with Frozen characters printed on it, was betrayed by her mother for 30 pieces of crack cocaine.

Aurelia Salinas, 42, (pictured) was arrested after allegedly confessing to police her involvement in her daughter’s murder

Heartbreaking CCTV footage shows Luz trying to escape from the clutches of Salinas’ boyfriend as he carries her away from her home.

As he picks his way down a muddy track, the dealer carries Luz in one arm and appears to slap her with his free hand to stop her wriggling.

The dealer, who has not been named, went on to rape and murder the three-year-old, who had not yet started school. Initial reports suggest she was suffocated.

Her tiny corpse was discovered wrapped in a shirt on top of a bed in an abandoned house.

Furious locals reportedly tried to lynch Salinas as she was being arrested after reportedly confessing to police her involvement in her daughter’s murder.

Her boyfriend later confessed to the murder, according to local media.

Salinas first told police that Luz had disappeared while she was sleeping, but admitted that she had sold her daughter for drugs after police discovered the CCTV footage.

Both Salinas and her boyfriend were arrested, along with a 17-year-old who is allegedly also involved.

According to police, Salinas was under the influence of drugs and seemed unconcerned while police searched for the girl.

More than 300 locals attended Luz’s funeral and some neighbours later burned down the house where her body had been found.

Investigators said the family had a ‘history of tragedies’, and Salinas has seven other children, including a 12-year-old girl she allegedly allowed to be sexually abused by a 30-year-old man.

Both cases are currently under investigation.
