Padres catcher Austin Nola ‘has cognitive vision issue’ after taking pitch to the face in March, and Yankees’ Aaron Rizzo is the reason he got tests

  • Austin Nola struggled mightily after breaking his nose in spring training
  • He later learned that he was struggling with a cognitive issue

Padres catcher Austin Nola been diagnosed with a cognitive vision issue, and the reason he sought a medical opinion on the issue has to do with the Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo.

Back in March, Nola was hit in the face by a pitch in spring training.

His nose was broken on the play, but he believed he was otherwise fine and resumed activity in Padres camp three days later.

However, it wasn’t until Rizzo complained to reporters of fogginess and ‘feeling hungover’ following a May 28 collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. that Nola started to more heavily consider his March injury.

Rizzo was placed on the injured list on August 3 with post-concussion syndrome.

Nola, who had struggled mightily to start the season, believed Rizzo’s situation ‘sounded familiar’ to him according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, and quickly got neurology and ophthalmology tests last month.

The catcher, who had been demoted to Triple-A after hitting .146 through 52 games,  was reportedly diagnosed with oculomotor dysfunction, ‘a vision issue that impacts the brain’s ability to coordinate eye movement.’

‘I’m so thankful to get some clarity on it,’ Nola told the Union-Tribune. ‘I just couldn’t figure it out. I just didn’t know why I wasn’t seeing the ball.’

Nola, who hasn’t played since August 8, learned through the testing that he was experiencing misaligned tracking with his left eye.

The 33-year-old struggled in Triple-A El-Paso, hitting just .185 in eight games, before being placed on the team’s injured list this weekend.

Rizzo also struggled after his collision with Tatis Jr. – which was deemed by a neurologist to be the likely cause of his issues – and has not yet returned from the injury list either.

Nola, meanwhile, is targeting a return to baseball this season.

‘I feel like I’m getting on the road to recovery,’ he said.

Stick to basketball Victor! 7-foot-4 phenom Wembanyama throws a howler of a first pitch at Yankees game – ahead of the NBA Draft where he is set to be picked first

  • Victor Wembanyama arrived at Newark airport Monday ahead of the NBA Draft
  • Tuesday, the future NBA star had the honor of throwing the Yankees first pitch
  • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Future NBA star Victor Wembanyama had the honor of throwing the first pitch at the New York Yankees game Tuesday night but it didn’t go too well.

The French teenager, who touched down in the United States Monday ahead of Thursday’s draft, wasted no time in visiting the country’s other iconic sports teams.

Wembanyama, 19, is used to wowing on the basketball court and is expected to continue doing so in the NBA but his first visit to the mound could be his last.

He threw the first pitch at the Yankees’ game Tuesday but yanked it well outside, missing the catcher entirely.

Before the Yankees’ matchup against the Seattle Mariners the 7-foot-4 phenom shared a snap of the baseball looking freakishly small in his hands.

The French superstar appeared to acknowledge how small the baseball, which resembled something more like a golf ball, looked in his hands as he wrote: ‘Lmaooooo.’

Wembanyama, wearing an unreleased pair Nike x Drake sneakers and a Yankees jersey, took the time to sign autographs for fans at the side of the field.

The sensation will be taken No. 1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs when the card is read out at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Wembanyama, wearing a Joe DiMaggio No. 5 jersey, took a few swings in the batting cages and showed off yet another skill as he juggles baseball to the awe of this audience gathered.

He was also spotted chatting to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, hilariously towering over him.

He was given a preview of what his life Stateside would be like when he was swarmed by fans at Newark Airport Monday ahead of the draft.

In video exclusively obtained by Mail Sport, Wembanyama admitted he’s excited to be in the Big Apple.

‘I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,’ the French phenom said, via Adam Glyn.

The young Frenchman is the biggest NBA Draft prize in more than a decade. Dubbed a ‘generational talent’ by none other than LeBron James, Wembanyama is athletic, skilled, enormous, and still only 19.

Wembanyama will be drafted precisely two decades on from when James was taken by his hometown organization, the Cleveland Cavaliers, in 2003. He has received praise for all corners of the globe in recent months – and perhaps none greater than from James’s former teammate, Richard Jefferson.

‘If LeBron James at that exact moment showed up, Victor would go higher than him,’ Jefferson, a former teammate of James, said during an October airing of NBA Today.

‘LeBron James, and all the things that we saw — and I’m not saying he’s going to be better than LeBron James — what I’m saying is right now, I remember LeBron James 20 years ago.

‘That player was six-foot-seven, this person is seven-[foot]-four. LeBron James would be number two if he has the exact same age in the exact same draft, LeBron James would be number two. That’s how crazy this kid is as a prospect.’

The 19-year-old will play in the NBA’s Summer League this July after previous reporting said the French phenom would skip the event.

Wembanyama just wrapped up the LNB Pro A championship series, where his Metropolitans 92 squad were swept in a best-of-five series vs. Monaco.

George Frazier, a relief pitcher who made two World Series appearances over a decade-long MLB career before becoming a broadcaster, passed away in Tulsa on Monday at age 68.

A specific cause of death has not been revealed, but he had been battling an undisclosed illness, according to the Denver Post.

Frazier is remembered by Colorado Rockies fans as the team’s color commentator from 1998 until 2015.

‘In a game full of charismatic characters, George had a seat at the head table,’ long-time Rockies play-by-play announcer Drew Goodman told the Denver Post.

Best known as Rich ‘Goose’ Gossage’s setup man for the New York Yankees, Frazier also pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins, winning a World Series in his final season with the latter.

The Rockies also released a statement on Monday.

‘We are deeply saddened at the passing of former Rockies color analyst, George Frazier,’ the statement began.

‘A retired MLB pitcher, George was a mainstay and the voice behind many classic calls on Rockies broadcasts from 1998-2015. For a generation of Rockies fans, George Frazier was synonymous with Rockies baseball. Our thoughts are with George’s wife, Kay, and his four kids, Matt, Brian, Parker and Georgia, during this time.’

A lanky, 6-foot-5 right-hander, Frazier was a star a Springfield, Missouri’s Hillcrest High School, where he played alongside two other future major leaguers in Bob Detherage and Keith Drumright. Although he was drafted in the 13th round by the Texas Rangers, Frazier instead enrolled at the University of Oklahoma before ultimately being picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the ninth round of the 1976 draft.

A year later, he was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for Buck Martinez, and soon blossomed into a reliable option out of the bullpen for manager Ken Boyer.

Frazier dropped his ERA to an impressive 2.74 in 1980, but had his best season in the Bronx in 1981 after being traded Rafael Santana and posting a miniscule 1.63 ERA, while serving as Rich ‘Goose’ Gossage’s setup man.

Frazier made the first of two career World Series appearances that season, but pitched poorly, yielding seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings of work against the eventual-champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Worst of all, he became the first pitcher to lose three games in a single best-of-seven World Series.

As disappointing as that was, Frazier got a literal and figurative pat on the back from cantankerous owner George Steinbrenner.

‘It wasn’t your fault, kid,’ Steinbrenner said to Frazier, as retold by the reliever to the New York Times in 2011. ‘You’ll be a Yankee next year, don’t worry about it.’

Frazier was a Yankee the following season, and remained a solid option out of the bullpen for the battalion of managers who toiled under Steinbrenner’s wrath in the 1980s: Gene Michael, Bob Lemon, Gene Michael, Clyde King, and Billy Martin.

During that time, he built a rapport with Yankee legend and Oklahoma native, Mickey Mantle.

‘Mickey walks over and says, ”Hey, I heard you’re from Oklahoma,” so we visited for 15 or 20 minutes, and after the game, we sat and talked again,’ Frazier told the Times. ‘From that time on, Mickey kind of accepted me in as one of his buddies.’

In 1984, Frazier was dealt with outfielder Otis Nixon to Cleveland, who traded him four months later along with Rick Sutcliffe to the Chicago Cubs for a package that included slugger Joe Carter.

Frazier was dealt one last time in 1987, landing in Minnesota.

He would go on to pitch two scoreless innings in a World Series loss to the Cardinals, but the Twins would ultimately win the title in the title in seven games, and Frazier would never pitch in the majors again.

Frazier later returned to the World Series as an announcer with the Rockies in 2007, as the team fell to the Boston Red Sox.

His son, Parker, also had a professional baseball career, reaching Triple-A with the Rockies, White Sox and Diamondbacks organizations.

In 2011, Frazier described himself as fortunate to the New York Times: I wasn’t entitled to pitch in the 1981 World Series. I wasn’t entitled to pitch in the 1987 World Series. It was a privilege I had an opportunity to do that, and I still feel that every day.’

Drew Bowser hit a routine fly that Texas outfielders couldn’t find in the twilight sky, allowing Alberto Rios to score the game-winning run from second, and Stanford edged the Longhorns 7-6 on Monday night to advance to its third straight College World Series.

Rios was nearly thrown out at second for the third out of the ninth after his long fly to left hit off the wall.

Texas almost got out of the inning again when Bowser hit a high fly, but it dropped about 15 feet from outfielder Dylan Campbell.

Stanford (44-18) will play top-seeded Wake Forest on Saturday in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bowser made it 2-0 in the second with his third home run in three games.

Stanford scored three runs with two outs in the fourth for a 6-3 lead. Carter Graham followed an intentional walk with an RBI single to break a tie and Braden Montgomery added a two-run single for a three-run lead.

Texas (42-22) was also seeking its third consecutive appearance in the College World Series.

Campbell tied it at 6-all in the eighth with a single and then turned a double play on a long throw from right field to retire Saborn Campbell at third.

The other matchups in the College World Series – beginning this Friday – are as follows: Oral Roberts v. TCU; No. 7 Virginia v. No. 2 Florida; Tennessee v. No. 5 LSU.

First baseman Pete Alonso scored off a solo home run to become the first MLB player to reach 20 home runs this season despite the New York Mets losing to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

The Mets lost a three-game series to the Chicago Cubs before beating the Rockies in a best-of-three matchup on Friday (5-2).

On Saturday, however, ace Justin Verlander couldn’t catch a break against Colorado. A night after Max Scherzer gave a seven inning performance, Verlander gave up five runs in the second inning alone.

The Mets came back from a 6-0 deficit by the end of the sixth. Verlander, who stayed in the game despite a torrid time on the mound, was rewarded for his perseverance when Francisco Alvarez hit a blast to tie the game.

New York then took the lead in seventh before the Rockies clawed back to leapfrog the Mets by the end of the inning.

The Mets eventually lost 10-7 in the second game of a three-game series and will now face the Rockies for a third and final time on Sunday at Coors Field.

Yankees 3-2 Padres

Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a game-ending single with one out in the 10th inning as the New York Yankees beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Saturday.

After Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge hit into double plays in the eighth and ninth, the Yankees got their fifth walk-off win when Kiner-Falefa sent Nick Martinez’s 2-0 pitch down the line just past the glove of third baseman Rougned Odor to score Greg Allen.

‘I was just trying to see if he was gonna come after me,’ Kiner-Falefa said. ‘He threw two balls out of the zone and I was just looking for something. I thought he was going to throw something elevated and I was going to be able hit a pop fly to left field right there, but I was a little bit out front and I was able to hook it in the line.’

It was Kiner-Falefa’s third career walk-off hit and first since joining the Yankees to play shortstop last season. This time, he got the hit while continuing to play as an outfielder for the first time in his career.

‘Whatever role it’s been in, he’s worked his tail off to acclimate himself to it and be ready for it,’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. ‘And now he’s gotten some more starts lately. You get him in matchups where you feel like he can be really successful and he’s done a really nice job here for us.’

Astros 6-3 Athletics

Astros’ shortstop Jeremy Peña hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat since getting a planned day off, backing another solid outing from Framber Valdez as Houston sent the Oakland Athletics to their 10th consecutive loss with a 6-3 win Saturday.

Alex Bregman had three hits and three RBI for Houston, which has won 13 of 16. The Astros (30-21) are a season-high nine games over .500 after opening the season 3-6.

‘We’ve known we had a great team from the jump,’ Peña said. ‘It’s just the flows of the season. We know that. Now it’s just a matter of showing up and doing that every day.’

The victory was the 2,123rd of Astros manager Dusty Bake’s career, two shy of Hall of Famer Joe McCarthy for eighth on the all-time list.

Valdez, who six days earlier pitched his second career shutout against the A’s, was almost as dominant this time, too, despite three walks.

Twins 9-7 Blue Jays

Willi Castro had his first career multi-homer game, Matt Wallner homered amongst his career-high four hits, and the Minnesota Twins held off the Toronto Blue Jays 9-7 on Saturday.

Edouard Julien also homered as part of a three-hit day, and Alex Kirilloff and Kyle Farmer each had two of Minnesota’s 14 hits.

All but Castro have spent time in Triple-A St. Paul this season, although Farmer’s was only a four-game rehab assignment.

‘When you call guys up, you’re looking for them to help you win a game and then they just take over the game and it’s a bonus,’ said manager Rocco Baldelli. ‘We knew we’re gonna rely on them at some point in the year and that time’s now.’

Bo Bichette had three hits, including a home run for the second straight game, but the Blue Jays lost for the 10th time in 13 games. Daulton Varsho also went deep.

Phillies 2-1 Braves

Zack Wheeler struck out 12 in eight shutout innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Charlie Morton and the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Saturday.

Wheeler (4-4) allowed three hits, walked one and hit a batter in his first win since April 29. The right-hander went 0-3 with a 4.44 ERA in four previous May starts.

Wheeler said manager Rob Thomson asked him how he was feeling after the seventh.

‘(Thomson) told me if I got the first two guys in the eighth, I would get a chance to get through it,’ said Wheeler, who then struck out the first two batters before retiring Matt Olson on a bouncer to first. ‘I worked really hard this past bullpen working up and hitting my spots.’

Wheeler felt it was his best outing of the season.

‘That was a very well-pitched game against us,’ Braves manager Brian Snitker said. ‘I felt like he probably could’ve thrown out there all day long.’

Mariners 5-0 Pirates

Luis Castillo struck out 10 in six crisp innings, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 on Saturday.

Castillo allowed one hit – Tucupita Marcano’s double on the game’s first pitch – and walked two. The right-hander earned his second straight win since dropping consecutive starts.

Gabe Speier, Matt Brash, Trevor Gott and Justin Topa then combined for three innings of one-hit ball for Seattle. It was a sharp contrast from Friday night, when Pittsburgh slugged seven homers in a series-opening win.

‘I saw they came out aggressive,’ Castillo said. ‘So in my mind, I said, ”OK, I just gotta throw a variety of different pitches.” And that’s what I did.’

Castillo’s 10 strikeouts matched his most since he was acquired in a trade with Cincinnati in July.

Reds 8-5 Cubs

Jonathan India homered twice and drove in five runs, helping the Cincinnati Reds beat the struggling Chicago Cubs 8-5 on Saturday night.

TJ Friedl and rookie Matt McLain each had two hits and scored two runs as Cincinnati won for the fourth time in six games. Tyler Stephenson also had two hits.

Buck Farmer (1-3) got five outs for the win, and Alexis Díaz worked a shaky ninth for his 11th save. Farmer, Ian Gibaut, Alex Young and Díaz combined for 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball in relief of Brandon Williamson.

‘It was really a matter of if we really believed if we could keep it right there after they got out to a lead, that we could chip away at it,’ Reds manager David Bell said. ‘Brandon did a really nice job after giving up some runs in the first two innings of keeping it right there while he was still in.’

Dansby Swanson and Ian Happ each had two RBIs for Chicago, which blew a 4-1 lead. Jameson Taillon was charged with four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision.

Cardinals 2-1 Guardians

Brendan Donovan scored on a passed ball in the 10th inning after homering in the second, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals – who had just two hits – to a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night.

Donovan began the 10th on second as the automatic runner, stole third base and came home when third-string catcher David Fry mishandled a pitch by Nick Sandlin (2-2) to Oscar Mercado.

‘Nick made a good pitch, threw a sinker, and I thought I had my glove right there on the dirt,’ said Fry, who entered in the eighth after starter Cam Gallagher was lifted for a pinch-hitter. ‘Unfortunately, it went right under my glove to the backstop.’

St. Louis won for the 14th time in its last 20 games despite managing only two hits against Guardians starter Tanner Bibee and four relievers. The Cardinals didn’t get a hit after Alec Burleson singled in the third.

It was only the third time Cleveland lost while allowing two or fewer hits in an extra-inning game. The others were in 1901 and 1977.

Tigers 7-3 White Sox

Zach McKinstry homered in a three-run seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 on Saturday.

McKinstry went 3 for 4 with a sacrifice fly and has reached base 19 times in the last seven games.

The Tigers trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, but McKinstry tied the game with a one-out homer off Joe Kelly (1-3), and back-to-back doubles by Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson gave Detroit a 4-3 lead.

‘I was facing an old teammate in Joe, I got a good pitch and I drove it into the stands,’ said McKinstry, who played with Kelly with the Dodgers in 2020-21. ‘Our offense is really buzzing right now.’

Torkelson took third on a wild pitch and Eric Haase punched a single over the drawn-in infield to make it 5-3. Zack Short hit a two-run homer to make it 7-3 in the eighth.

Rangers 5-3 Orioles

Andrew Heaney pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, Marcus Semien extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a pivotal two-run single and the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 Saturday.

Robbie Grossman and Jonah Heim each had an RBI single for the Rangers, who have won 10 of 13. Their 33-18 record is best in Rangers history after 51 games, and they passed Baltimore (33-19) for second-best in the majors behind Tampa Bay.

‘It’s a start. Just tell yourself that,’ manager Bruce Bochy said. ‘But these guys are playing so well right now. Starting pitching, Andrew goes out there and throws a beautiful game. We’re just getting it done.’

After outscoring the Orioles 17-5 in the first two games of this three-game set, Texas is assured of winning a fifth straight road series for the first time since 2016.

Austin Hays homered for the Orioles, who disappointed a crowd of 37,939 with a lackluster performance at the plate for the second consecutive game. Baltimore failed to score until Hays connected in the seventh and trailed 5-1 before an uprising in the ninth was blunted with the potential tying run at the plate.

Nationals 4-2 Royals

CJ Abrams hit a two-run double in Washington’s four-run sixth inning, Corey Dickerson got his 1,000th career hit and the Washington Nationals defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Saturday.

Dickerson sparked the Nationals’ big inning with his milestone hit on an RBI double. He became the 12th player to reach the milestone in a Nationals uniform and the first since Brian Dozier in 2019.

‘With how much failure there is in this game, getting 1,000 is cool,’ Dickerson said. ‘We just keep grinding as a team and trust each other which helped us rally like we did.’

After Josiah Gray gave up two runs and four hits in four innings, Mason Thompson (3-2), Carl Edwards Jr., Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan held the Royals scoreless – with Finnegan earning his 11th save of the season.

The Nationals have scored a combined 12 runs in the sixth inning through the first two games of the three-game series.

Dodgers 6-5 Rays

In a tense and tight matchup of division leaders, Freddie Freeman and the Los Angeles Dodgers came out on top.

Freeman extended his hitting streak to 16 games, Max Muncy and Miguel Vargas homered, and the NL West-leading Dodgers beat the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 on Saturday.

Freeman finished 2 for 3 with two walks and is hitting .444 (28 for 63) with 18 RBIs during his streak.

Mookie Betts had an RBI single and Freeman followed with a run-scoring double off Colin Poche (3-1) as Los Angeles took a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning. Vargas added a solo shot in the eighth.

Harold Ramírez hit the Rays’ major league-leading 100th homer, but Tampa Bay dropped to 25-6 at home. Tampa Bay reached 100 home runs in 54 games, fifth-fastest of any team since 1901.

Giants 3-1 Brewers

Mitch Haniger hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning and Logan Webb allowed one run over seven innings to pace the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.

J.D. Davis singled with one out in the eighth off Peter Strzelecki, who relieved to open the inning. After Michael Conforto struck out, Haniger sent the first pitch he saw from Strzelecki (2-4) 419 feet to center for his fourth homer.

‘Webbie threw the ball great,’ Haniger said. ‘Unfortunately, they pushed a run across there in the bottom of the seventh, but to go out there and put a couple runs on the board for the win, extremely deserving. He threw the ball really well.’

That big hit came a night after Haniger, originally drafted by the Brewers, went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs in the Giants´ 15-1 victory over Milwaukee.

Webb (4-5) allowed four hits, struck out 11 and walked one as the Giants won for the 10th in 12 games. Webb, 0-4 with a 4.94 ERA after his first four starts, is 3-0 with a 1.30 ERA in five starts in May.

Red Sox 2-1 Diamondbacks

The Boston Red Sox pulled out a win on Saturday thanks to a little unorthodox baseball strategy.

Manager Alex Cora enjoyed it, even if he couldn’t take credit for it.

Reese McGuire’s safety squeeze with the bases loaded brought home Triston Casas, which proved to be the difference as the Red Sox beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1.

‘You’re going to have to ask Reese – ballplayers making plays,’ Cora said. ‘Sometimes they don’t feel right, they feel like that’s the only way they can drive them in, and they do.’

Boston has won the first two games of the series and will go for a three-game sweep on Sunday. Kiké Hernández had an RBI single for the Red Sox in the fourth, and their small-ball strategy later in the inning took just about everyone by surprise – including Cora.

Batting ninth in the lineup, McGuire came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out, but instead of trying for a big swing that might break the game open, the catcher dropped a nifty sacrifice bunt down the first-base line.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had himself a night in the Bronx, toying with Yankees fans as San Diego Padres topped the New York Yankees 5-1 in the series opener.

Tatis was taunted by the Yankees crowd with chants of ‘steroids’ referencing his 80-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs.

The Dominican answered with a 439ft home run into left field to extend the Pads’ lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth inning.

Tatis held the bat as he watched the ball, then casually flipped it toward the Padres’ bench.

Following the homer, Tatis gave it back to the Bronx faithful, gesturing that they had gone quiet and subsequently questioned why.

The banter didn’t stop there with the San Diego slugger acting as a conductor, waving his fingers back and forth amid chants of ‘steroids.’

‘It’s loud. It’s New York. You’re going to hear everything,’ Tatis said postgame. ‘You’re just giving a good time to the fans. You’ve just got to learn how to embrace it.’

Overall, it was a great night with the traveling Padres. Juan Soto launched a 432ft bomb into the second deck of Yankee Stadium.

Soto put the Padres ahead in the fifth inning against Randy Vásquez (0-1), a 24-year-old right-hander making his big league debut.

After Vásquez grazed Jake Cronenworth’s thigh with a pitch, Soto fouled a 1-0 cutter off his left knee and turned on a full-count cutter for his 10th home run.

The drive to right field came off the bat at 114 mph, the Padres´ hardest-hit home run this season.

Aaron Judge says he was looking at ‘a lot of chirping from our dugout, which I really didn’t like’ after Blue Jays announcers try to create controversy over him glancing at Yankees bench just before belting 462-foot home run

  • Aaron Judge said he addressed the situation with his teammates after the game
  • His teammates were voicing their displeasure with the umpire during the at-bat
  • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Aaron Judge said he was trying to identify which of his Yankees teammates was yelling at plate umpire Clint Vondrak when he peeked into his own dugout before hitting a 462-foot home run in Toronto on Monday night.

The Yankees slugger looked sideways for a moment before driving a 114.9 mph scorcher off right-hander Jay Jackson.

‘There was kind of a lot of chirping from our dugout, which I really didn’t like in the situation,’ Judge said. New York led 6-0 at the time and then went on to win 7-4.

Three pitches earlier, Vondrak ejected New York manager Aaron Boone for arguing a low strike call to Judge. Boone came out of the dugout to vent at Vondrak and crew chief James Hoye.

Toronto’s broadcasters noticed Judge peeking into his own dugout before his homer and speculated he was looking for some kind of signal.

‘It’s kind of odd that a hitter would be looking in that direction,’ Blue Jays manager John Schneider said.

Judge said some of his teammates were still voicing their displeasure as his at-bat continued.

‘I feel like after the manager does his thing it’s like, “Fellas, our pitcher has still got to go out there and make some pitches. We’ve got the lead, let’s just go to work here,”‘ Judge said.

‘I said a couple of things to some guys in the dugout and especially after the game. Hopefully it won’t happen again.’

Boone said he understood Judge’s frustration with the dugout distraction.

‘Judgie was kind of looking over like, “I’m hitting here,”‘ Boone said.

Judge hit two solo homers Monday, his ninth and 10th of the season. It was his third multihomer game this year and the 30th of his career.

Judge has 30 home runs against Toronto, his second-highest total against an opponent behind 35 times vs. Baltimore.

College baseball head coach resigns after illegal communication devices were found in his team’s batting helmets… and they still lost 11-4!

  • The team found to have communications in the headset lost the game, 11-4
  • An investigation was called for after noises were heard from batting helmets

A JUCO baseball head coach has resigned after two of his players were found to  have illegal communications inside their helmets.

Atlantic Cape Community College coach Rodney Velardi left his post, per the wishes of the New Jersey, after 13 years in the job.

The scandal came to light during an April 22 game vs. Rowan College Gloucester County, which Atlantic Cape lost 11-4.

‘After the situation with the game, he was suspended pending the outcome of the NJCAA Region 19 review, and at that time, we had asked for him to resign,’ Chief Marketing Officer at Atlantic Cape, Laura Batchelor, said via the Cherry Hill Courier-Post.

Rowan and Atlantic Cape had also played April 21. It was then Gloucester County pitcher Ethan Dodd had a sense he’d been tipping pitches. Turns out, he was wrong.

‘He had a feeling they were getting really good swings on pitches that he thought were good pitches,’ Gloucester head coach Rob Valli told the outlet. Before adding Dodd, in ‘hindsight’ was on the right path.

First baseman Felix Diaz told Valli there were noises emanating from his opponents’ batting helmets. Despite initial disbelief, he asked the umpires to conduct an investigation, in which they found communications devices inside the helmets.

‘I didn’t believe it,’ Valli said. ‘I just thought, nah. I didn’t believe it. I didn’t not believe him, but for that sophisticated of cheating, I just didn’t think they would do it. I didn’t think they would do it.

‘For me, I wasn’t going to go right up there in the first inning. We had to confirm that’s what it was. So, second time up, those same guys got on, and he was confirming with me the whole time. Once those guys got on, he’s saying, ‘I hear it. I hear it.”

An investigation by Atlantic Cape was not conclusive and according to Batchelor, Velardi admitted to using the devices in practices, not games.

‘We found that coach Velardi was in direct violation of the [NJCAA rules],’ she said. ‘Whether or not that was done intentionally, we couldn’t tell, but he was in violation.’

‘As an institution, we had no idea. I apologize on behalf of the college to Rowan College Gloucester County and anyone else that might’ve been affected.’

Randy Arozarena’s first-inning home run against the New York Yankees led to two bean balls and an ejection for Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash in the Rays’ 5-4 win on Friday in St. Petersburg.

Speaking to reporters after the Ray’s MLB-best 27th win of the season, Cash shared his exchange with umpire Lance Barksdale, who seemed unconvinced that Arozarena was being targeted by the Yankees pitchers.

‘He said that half the crew did not feel that it was intentional,’ Cash told reporters. ‘And I said I didn’t give a s*** what half the crew said.’

Arozarena homered to center field off Jhony Brito before the rookie right-hander plunked the outfielder on the elbow guard in the third. Albert Abreu then hit Arozarena around belt high with a fifth-inning pitch.

An angry Arozarena walked slowly toward first base and whipped his bat in disgust towards the Rays’ dugout.

There was yelling between the benches, but no trouble on the field. The umpires gathered and issued warnings to both teams, which prompted Cash to rush out of the dugout to argue with Barksdale, the crew chief.

Wander Franco put the Rays up 5-4 with an RBI double off Jimmy Cordero (1-1) in the seventh. Yandy Díaz was initially called out at the plate, but the call was changed after a replay review.

Díaz had a solo homer in a two-run third for the Rays (27-6), who opened a 10-game lead over the last-place Yankees (17-16) in the AL East.

White Sox colour analyst Steve Stone has apologized publicly after criticizing the burden of Chicago pitcher Lance Lynn.

In his 5 begins this season, Lynn has gotten off to a brutal begin, pitching a 7.52 ERA en path to an 0-3 file.

And Stone took intention on the 270-pound Lynn this week.

‘[Lynn]’s had lots of leg points and different issues,’ Stone stated of Lynn on Parkins and Spiegel on 670 The Rating.

‘If cardiovascularly it is bothering him with the pitch clock, perhaps a pair salads would assist … and I do not know if he is having issues with that.

‘But when that could be a drawback, then perhaps in the event you enhance your cardiovascular by shedding a pair kilos or doing no matter he is gonna do to work out.’

The White Sox entered Friday with the third-worst file within the league at 7-20, and the the vibes across the workforce are usually not extremely optimistic judging by Stone’s remarks.

Nonetheless, the broadcaster took to Twitter to apologize on Friday.

‘A number of days in the past, I made a touch upon radio about Lance Lynn and his weight because it pertained to endurance,’ he wrote.

‘I made a mistake and take duty. No excuses and no rationalizations. I used to be fallacious. Lance and I spoke yesterday, and I apologized. He accepted and we shook fingers.’

Stone was a pitcher himself, and a really profitable one at that, as he received the 1980 Cy Younger.

Stone spent three of his 11 seasons with the White Sox and ended his profession with a 3.97 ERA.
