PureGym sprints ahead as it hooks in 190,000 new members in the last six months

  • PureGym reported first-half turnover expanded 17% year-on-year to £272m
  • It launched 29 new sites during the period, with the majority opening in Britain
  • Last year, the firm announced medium-term plans to expand to over 1,000 sites

PureGym has posted a robust half-year performance thanks to rising membership levels as health-conscious Britons sought to get fitter on a budget.

The Leeds-based company, Britain’s biggest gym chain, reported turnover expanded 17 per cent year-on-year to £272million for the six months ending June.

Another 190,000 members were added by the group during the period, taking the total membership base across its corporate-owned locations to 1.86 million.

Among its recently-opened locations in the UK, PureGym noted that membership levels were performing ahead of plan, even with current cost-of-living pressures.

It launched 29 new sites between January and June, with the majority opening in Britain, two in Switzerland, and seven under franchise in the Middle East, including its first outlet in the United Arab Emirates.

The combination of new locations and soaring membership figures helped the firm’s operating profits rise by 43 per cent to £40million.

Earnings further benefited from keeping cost increases under control by limiting electricity use and hedging approximately 90 per cent of its energy bills.

Humphrey Cobbold, chief executive of PureGym, admitted: ‘Whilst we had hoped that operating conditions following the pandemic would be easier, the reality is that the business environment has remained very difficult on multiple dimensions.

‘Inflation, and rising energy prices in particular, put significant pressure on our cost base whilst also hitting consumers’ disposable incomes, triggering the cost of living crisis.

‘So, once again, we have had to rise to the challenges in front of us and prove our capability to adjust and adapt to the situations we faced.’

Cobbold further said that the business has observed robust trading since July, with seven additional corporate-owned outlets being opened.

After lockdown curbs started being significantly loosened in 2021, PureGym began experiencing an enormous recovery in demand, eventually seeing its total customer base far exceed pre-pandemic volumes.

Last year, the company announced plans to more than double in size to over 1,000 clubs in the medium term, with the UK predicted to have between 700 and 900 sites by no later than 2028.

Funding for the expansion will come from the £300million investment by private equity group KKR. It became the second largest shareholder in PureGym following the deal, after Leonard Green & Partners.

Popularised in the book and film series The Da Vinci Code, the Knights Templar were a mysterious holy militia that sprang up in the 12th century.

The medieval order, which had chapters across Europe, including in Britain, were known for their role in the Crusades and as one of the Middle Ages’ most powerful and wealthy religious organisations.

Now, in what has been described as one of the ‘most nationally important discoveries’ of its kind, a historian has uncovered graves belonging to members of the Knights Templar at an English village church.

Edward Spencer Dyas had already found the resting place of three members of the ancient order at St Mary’s Church in Enville, Staffordshire, but has now discovered five more 800-year-old graves.

He believes the medieval structure could be one of the most nationally important Templar churches in the country because of its links to ‘England’s greatest knight’ of the Middle Ages.

In Dan Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code, and the film of the same name starring Tom Hanks, Professor Robert Langdon delves beneath Rosslyn Chapel, in Scotland, in the hunt for Knights Templar treasure.

WHO WERE THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR?

The Knights Templar were a mysterious holy militia that sprang up in the 12th century.

The medieval order were known for their role in the Crusades and as one of the Middle Ages’ most powerful and wealthy religious organisations.

A unique combination of knight and monk, the Knights Templar was made up of devout Christians tasked with providing safety to pilgrims to Jerusalem.

In 1129, the Knights were officially recognised by the Pope and by 1180 there were some 600 of them in Jerusalem, Tripoli and Antioch.

By the end of the 12th century there were thousands of Knights Templar, who accumulated considerable land, castles and spoils taken in battle.

They even bankrolled Henry II on his crusades.

William Marshal, the 1st Earl of Pembroke, was a jouster, warrior, diplomat and even twice de facto king who was the inspiration for Lancelot in medieval Arthurian tales and also drafted the Magna Carta.

Marshal died aged 73 in 1219 and was buried in Temple Church in London after being invested into the order of the Knights Templar on his deathbed.

At St Mary’s, the stained glass windows depict an array of coats of arms including that of the Clare family.

Marshal was married to Isabel de Clare in in a marriage arranged by King Richard I.

Another coat of arms belonged to Hugh Mortimer of Chelmarsh, who married Marshal’s granddaughter.

There is little other explanation why there would be so many Templar graves at the quaint village church, although members of the group are believed to have attached themselves to churches dedicated to St Mary the Virgin.

The church on the outskirts of the Black Country was built in the early 12th century at a time when the Templars were creating Preceptories – a type of monastery – around Britain.

Each of the graves he has uncovered features a Templar cross within double circles in a standard Templar design.

One also includes a Crusader cross, suggesting the knight was both a Templar and a Crusader of the ancient military order.

At the foot of the same grave there’s also a Templar Cross – a variation of the Jerusalem Cross – revealing the unknown knight had once been part of the Templar Order at Temple Mount, Jerusalem.

‘I believe these discoveries make Enville one of the most nationally important churches in the country,’ Mr Dyas said.

‘That’s due to its close links with William Marshall, who is considered of the greatest warriors England ever produced.

‘But there is a mystery of why an European Templar is buried at Enville and why they were secretly so prominent there.’

Mr Dyas believes that St Mary's Church in Enville was 'under the patronage of the Templars'

Mr Dyas believes that St Mary’s Church in Enville was ‘under the patronage of the Templars’

Mr Dyas’ research led him to establish that St Mary’s was built by Roger de Bermingham – a priest whose family owned all Enville land including Morfe, a medieval royal forest in neighbouring Shropshire.

‘Although records are missing it is clear the de Bermingham family built the Norman church at Enville, using Templar financing,’ he added.

‘Henry de Morfe, who held land owned by the de Berminghams, sold part of Morfe Forest to the Templars at this time, and the de Berminghams instated Roger de Bermingham as the first priest of St Mary’s Church, Enville.’

It is for this reason that Mr Dyas believes the church was ‘under the patronage of the Templars’.

As part of his research, the historian was given permission to look inside the crypt beneath the church for further clues as to its Templar origins.

By the end of the 12th century there were thousands of Knights Templar, who accumulated considerable land, castles and spoils taken in battle.

They even bankrolled Henry II on his crusades.

WHAT WERE THE CRUSADES?

The Crusades were a series of religious wars fought between 1095 and 1291, in which Christian invaders tried to claim the near East.

It’s known that nobility led the Crusades, but historical records lack details of the ordinary soldiers who travelled to, lived and died in the near East.

Pope Urban II started the First Crusade (1096–1102) in order to aid the Christian Byzantine Empire, which was under attack by Muslim Seljuk Turks.

Europeans captured Jerusalem in 1099 as a result and Muslims quickly unified against the Christian invasion.

Muslims firmly controlled Jerusalem by 1291 and it remained in Islamic hands until the twentieth century.

The Crusades set the stage for several religious knightly military orders, including the Knights Templar, the Teutonic Knights, and the Hospitallers.

These groups defended the Holy Land and protected pilgrims travelling to and from the region.

The KN95 masks distributed to members of the House of Representatives to wear on the chamber floor are branded ‘Made in China,’ a recent photo shows, the same country where the coronavirus originated.

The picture, which was first obtained by Fox News, shows one of the distributed masks that are now required to be worn in order to enter the House floor.

The mandate is a result of the House physician, who recently directed lawmakers to explicitly wear an N95 or KN95 mask and not a cloth one.

Representative Andy Biggs, R-Arizona, pointed out the cruel irony, telling Fox it was fitting ‘for the Democrats to be handing out masks that were made in the same place the virus originated.’

While China has tried to insist the virus originated elsewhere, academics, politicians and the media have begun to contemplate the possibility it escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) – raising suspicions that Chinese officials simply hid evidence of the early spread.

An explosive study in May 2020 claimed that Chinese scientists created COVID-19 in a Wuhan lab, then tried to cover their tracks by reverse-engineering versions of the virus to make it look like it evolved naturally from bats.

The paper’s authors, British professor Angus Dalgleish and Norwegian scientist Dr. Birger Sørensen, wrote that they have had ‘prima facie evidence of retro-engineering in China’ for a year – but were ignored by academics and major journals.

Ohio Representative Brad Wenstrup, the House GOP Doctors Caucus chairman, told Fox News Channel on Thursday that the United States’ ‘insecure supply chain presents a much greater risk to our overall national health.’

‘The fact that the masks we are mandated to wear in the U.S. Congress are made in China is just one example of our inabilities to protect and treat Americans without relying on adversaries’ Wenstrup said.

‘These Chinese masks further highlight our need to divest away from the (Chinese Communist Party). Our national security and our health depend on it.’

‘As usual, Speaker Pelosi fails to recognize the senseless optics of her own decision-making,’ Representative Greg Murphy, R- North Carolina, said Thursday.

‘We are fighting a virus that came from China, yet the Speaker is comfortable with publicly supporting a Chinese manufacturer, sending our taxpayer dollars overseas and further advertising our dependency on China … on the faces of Congress.’

‘Either Pelosi’s office neglected to realize the cruel irony of supporting “Made in China” or they don’t care.’

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin arrives for a meeting with President Joe Biden on the administration’s response to the surge in COVID-19 cases across the country Thursday

As the Omicron surge appears to near its peak in many Eastern states, the variant has begun to head West, striking elsewhere in the country.

Oregon, Utah and Alaska now lead the nation in growth of Covid cases over the past two weeks, ending a long period when states along the East Coast – such as New York, New Jersey, South Carolina and Vermont – were hot spots of the surge.

Cases are also increasing in all 50 states, and have more than doubled over the past two weeks in 43 states. The nationwide daily case average reached a record 786,416 on Thursday and 1,822 deaths – the highest total since October.

Oregon leads the way, recording a 486 percent increase in cases over the past two weeks, up to 181 of every 100,000 residents now testing positive for the virus daily

In Utah, cases are up 468 percent over the last 14 days, with 279 of every 100,000 residents of the Beehive State recording infections daily.

At the moment, Alaska is following the trend of states on the West Coast, with cases up 443 percent over the past two weeks – with 197 of every 100,000 residents being infected daily.

Multiple people who work on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ were detained Thursday night on charges of illegal entry to the House of Representatives.

A total of nine people were initially detained over the incident, according to Fox News.

Among the arrestees are Robert Smigel, best known for his character Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Smigel, 62, is a frequent guest on Colbert’s CBS show.

Also arrested were one of Colbert’s producers, Allison Martinez, and writer, Josh Comers, reports Fox News.

According to Fox News’ Chad Pergram, the group was attempting to film and take pictures around the offices House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Lauren Boebert.

It is unclear why, but the visit may be linked to the ongoing January 6 riot hearings – with Democrat Representative Adam Schiff reportedly letting the posse in.

The group had earlier been attempting to get interviews in the Cannon House Office Building but were removed due to a lack of proper press credentials.

Those detained in addition to Smigel have been named as Jake Plunkett, Allison Martinez, Tyrone Dean, Stephen Romond, Nicoletta Green, Brendan Hurley, Josh Comers and David Feldman.

According to her LinkedIn page, Allison Martinez is an associate producer on Colbert’s popular late night comedy talk show.

While on his page, Jake Plunkett is listed as a senior producer and director on the program.

Brendan Hurley is a prop master on the show and has worked with Colbert since the host’s Comedy Central show, ‘The Colbert Report.’

Josh Comers is a Brooklyn-based comedian and writer.

David Feldman is a writer and comedian who previously worked on ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ and ‘The Daily Show.’

On his website, Feldman made no reference to his arrest but said that he was returning to New York City after filming with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog whom he referred to as his ‘boss.’ Feldman joked: ‘He’s tough, but fair.’

A CBS spokesperson told DailyMail.com that the members of the team were detained following their final interview after they stayed behind to film ‘comedy elements in the halls.’

The spokesperson said that the interviews were authorized and pre-arranged through congressional aides.

The team were filming at the Capitol on June 15 and 16, the spokesperson said.

Citing a congressional source, Fox News Jesse Watters said on a broadcast that the group gained access to the building from Democratic congressmen Rep. Adam Schiff of California and Rep. Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts.

During an appearance on Watters’ show, Rep. Rodney Davis of Illinois said that the group were banging on the doors of fellow Republicans Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

Davis also told Watters: ‘We just found out about the arrest today, and I’m going to make sure when we get back to Washington next week, we are going to ask the questions that need to be asked. We will ask the security officials why these arrests had to be made.’

The House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack public hearings have featured heavily on Colbert’s show in recent days.

On Wednesday, the host made light of reputed Proud Boy leader Joseph Biggs requesting to have his trial moved from Washington DC due to media attention.

Biggs’ lawyers specifically mentioned Colbert’s show in documents. Colbert joked: ‘They want to move the trial to some place where The Proud Boys have a better reputation. Like 1930s Berlin.’

According to a statement from capitol police: ‘On June 16, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) received a call for a disturbance in the Longworth House Office Building.’

‘Responding officers observed seven individuals, unescorted and without Congressional ID, in a sixth-floor hallway.’

The statement continued: ‘The building was closed to visitors, and these individuals were determined to be a part of a group that had been directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day.’

‘They were charged with Unlawful Entry. This is an active criminal investigation, and may result in additional criminal charges after consultation with the U.S. Attorney.’

There has been no comment from Stephen Colbert on the arrests

Families of the service men and women killed in Kabul two years ago gave the most damning verdict yet of President Joe Biden‘s response to the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

During a congressional hearing into what went wrong, they were asked whether the Biden administration had taken ownership of the botched exit.

They shook their heads in unison.

‘Neither do the American people,’ said Rep. Eli Crane, a former Navy S.E.A.L, who asked the question.

It is almost two years since a suicide bomber detonated his deadly payload amid the chaos of Kabul’s international airport.

President Joe Biden ordered U.S. troops to leave Afghanistan by the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The result was that the Taliban swept through the country and seized Kabul

President Joe Biden ordered U.S. troops to leave Afghanistan by the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The result was that the Taliban swept through the country and seized Kabul

He killed 13 Americans and at least 170 Afghans.

It brought a bloody conclusion to Biden’s decision to bring home the troops remaining in the country after 20 years of conflict.

It followed weeks of turmoil as Taliban gunmen advanced on the capital Kabul while Afghanistan’s armed forces, built with billions of dollars in foreign aid, melted away.

The result was that thousands of desperate Afghans besieged Hamid Karzai International Airport as they sought safe passage from the country’s extremist overlords.

It marked Biden’s first major test as president and his administration is accused of failing to properly plan the withdrawal or predict a Taliban takeover, despite the fact the insurgents had been gaining territory for months.

With the House now in Republican hands, lawmakers are intent on probing what went wrong.

Thursday’s session of the House subcommittee on oversight and accountability began with Rep. Brian Mast, the chairman, recognizing the mother of Sgt. Nicole Gee, the mother of Cpl. Hunter Lopez, and the parents of Cpl. Humberto Sanchez, who all died in the blast at the airport’s Abbey Gate in August 2021.

‘Thank you for raising patriots and I’m sorry for your loss,’ he said.

The Americans killed in the blast were: (left to right, starting with top row) Cpl. Daegan W. Page - Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo - Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover - Lance Cpl. David L. In his opening remarks he said Biden was the ultimate decision maker in the process to withdraw.

‘The president’s withdraw was a complete and utter catastrophe,’ he said.

‘The images of people hanging off of planes and desperate parents handing their babies over the airport walls to soldiers are seared into our country’s collective conscience.’

Colonel (Ret.) Seth Krummrich, former chief of staff at Special Operations Command Central, and Command Sergeant Major Jacob Smith, of the 10th Mountain Division, were the session’s witnesses.

But the most telling moment came when Rep. Mast addressed the families in the gallery.

The withdrawal will be remembered for the chaotic scenes of desperate Afghans trying to escape the Taliban at Hamid Karzai International Airport

‘To the families sitting behind you, that are still clearly morning, by nodding your head, yes or no,’ he asked: ‘Do you feel like this administration has taken ownership and accountability?’

They shook their heads.

‘I didn’t think so,’ he said.

Rep. Mike McCaul, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said true leaders own their mistakes.

‘Rather than prioritizing U.S. national security and the safety of thousands of Americans, they forced this rapid withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan on an artificial timeline,’ he said.

‘And the number is going to be September the 11th. What an insult to the victims of 9/11.’

The Logies are considered the Aussie TV industry’s night of nights.

And despite Married At First Sight being nominated for two awards, some leading cast members have been left ‘fuming’ after discovering they have not been invited to  year’s ceremony.

More than half of season ten’s brides and grooms won’t be walking the red carpet at the Sydney ceremony on June 30.

Daily Mail Australia understands some are ‘begging’ Channel Nine publicists for an invite ahead of the event.

With 24 participants appearing on the show this year, it is expected that only a handful will be invited due to the venue’s limited capacity.

‘Golden couple’ Evelyn Ellis and Duncan James are more than likely to score invites, as well as Melinda Willis and partner Layton Mills and Tahnee Cook and Ollie Skelton.

Despite being fan-favourites on the show, Janelle Han, Claire Nomarhas, Sandy Jawanda and Lyndall Grace have not been sent an invitation.

Bronte Schofield, Cameron Woods, Harrison Boon, Jesse Burford, Alyssa Barmonde and Josh White also didn’t make the cut.

‘No one knows what’s going on, Nine keep telling the cast that it’s not up to them who they invite and it’s all dependent on a number of reasons,’ one insider told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Half of them are pi**ed that it’s the same favourite six cast members who keep getting opportunities from Nine, while the others are forgotten about.’

Channel Nine is yet to formally invite any MAFS cast members, and will be narrowing them down in the coming days.

Claire, 32, told Daily Mail Australia she wasn’t too fussed about being invited, saying, ‘I would never beg for an invite lol… they should be lucky to have me’.

Harrison, 33, meanwhile said while he is disappointed he wasn’t invited to attend the ceremony, he wasn’t surprised.

‘I can’t walk the red carpet because I have lower back pain from carrying season 10 on my shoulders,’  Boon laughed.

‘I carried the show on my back and they don’t invite me, it’s bulls**t, but I can’t blame them since I’ve called out their pathetic edit since leaving the show.’

Harrison recently explained that while happy for Evelyn and Duncan, he doesn’t think it is fair that the couple are being dubbed a ‘success story’ and be invited to everything by Nine, because they weren’t matched by the experts.

Channel Nine has been contacted for comment.

Laughter echoed through the House of Representatives Wednesday when Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene called for decorum while temporarily presiding over the chamber. Greene, a far-right representative of Georgia known her outbursts towards her Democratic colleagues and President Biden himself, called for decorum during a floor speech. As House Majority Leader Steve Scalise spoke, Greene said: 'Members are reminded to abide by the decorum of the House,' in an effort to quiet down her colleagues across the aisle.

Instead of changing their tones to whispers, however, Greene's call was met with boisterous laughter, which prompted the congresswoman to repeatedly bang her gavel. Greene's ignored call for composure comes months after she heckled President Joe Biden during the State of the Union when she shouted 'Liar!' after he claimed Republicans hoped to threaten Social Security. At last year's SOTU, she and Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado chanted 'Build the Wall' as the president spoke about immigration. In a recent Homeland Security committee meeting, MTG branded Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas a 'liar,' after he said his agency is fighting the drug trafficking taking place at the U.S. southern border.

Ultimately, the Republican committee chairman, Representative Mark Green, moved to strike MTG's labeling of Mayorkas from the record. Democratic congressman Jimmy Gomez responded to the video of Green calling for decorum by writing that MTG 'calling for decorum is like Leonardo DiCaprio telling people to date people their own age.' Representative Adam Schiff tweeted: 'I haven’t laughed this hard in a while - but Marjorie Taylor Greene just called for “decorum” on the House Floor.'

During Greene's first congressional term, she was kicked off the House Budget and Education and Labor committees by the Democrat-controlled chamber. Her colleagues, in a mostly party-line vote, opted to remove her from her freshman committee placements following the revelation of a number of conspiracy theories she'd shared subjects ranging from the September 11 attacks to school shootings to the Clintons. Though she apologized for her remarks, and stated unequivocally that '9/11 absolutely happened' and 'school shootings are absolutely real,' the vote went against her, with nearly a dozen members of her party voting with the Democrats to remove her from committees.

  • Marjorie Taylor Greene found her calls for decorum fell upon deaf ears in the House Wednesday as she temporarily presided over the chamber
  • The right-wing congresswoman’s Democratic colleagues instead began to laugh and jeer as she requested quiet during a floor speech
  • During her roughly three years in Congress, Taylor Greene has had many loud confrontations with politicians whose views she does not share

Laughter echoed through the House of Representatives Wednesday when Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene called for decorum while temporarily presiding over the chamber.

Greene, a far-right representative of Georgia known for outbursts towards her Democratic colleagues and President Biden himself, called for decorum during a floor speech.

As House Majority Leader Steve Scalise spoke, Greene said ‘members are reminded to abide by the decorum of the House’ in an effort to quiet down her colleagues across the aisle.

Instead of changing their tones to whispers, however, Greene’s call was met with boisterous laughter, which prompted the congresswoman to repeatedly bang her gavel.

Following the vote, Greene shared how she was feeling with her followers and critics.

‘I woke up early this morning literally laughing thinking about what a bunch of morons the Democrats (+11) are for giving someone like me free time,’ Greene posted.

‘In this Democrat tyrannical government, Conservative Republicans have no say on committees anyway. Oh this is going to be fun!’

She went on to win her reelection campaign by a commanding margin.
