Life in the fold of the super-rich comes with serious perks, these nannies and former nannies reveal.

They’re taking to TikTok to lift the veil on the reality of au pairing for the super-rich – and shedding light on the luxurious benefits that are part and parcel of the role.

Working holidays on private yachts, flying by private jet, VIP access to theme parks and meals cooked by private chefs can be all in a day’s work, they reveal.

One example is Ginger Rose Smith, 27, who recently shared a video about her experience working as a nanny for a Middle Eastern royal family who were spending time in Los Angeles. It taught her ‘how the wealthiest of the wealthy live’, she reveals.

Ginger Rose, who is no longer a nanny, was employed in the position five years ago  to support herself while she was doing an unpaid internship in the city. Speaking to MailOnline Travel, Ginger Rose says that VIP access to ‘some of the most elite shops, events, and shows’ was one of the biggest perks of the role. She says: ‘We’d go shopping at the Nike store and they would literally close the store down for us to shop there.’

Many nannies and former nannies to the world’s millionaires and billionaires are taking to TikTok to share their experiences in the profession. Above is Ginger Rose Smith, who formerly worked as a nanny for a wealthy family in Los Angeles

The most luxurious experience she had, she reveals, was when she accompanied the family on a trip to the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. ‘I got to see how the one per cent attends these sort of experiences,’ she says, adding: ‘We had a personal guide [and] got to cut straight to the front of every line.’

Ginger adds that when they went on rides at the theme park, no other park visitors were allowed on the ride at the same time. ‘That day was pretty crazy,’ she says.

Another bonus was the ‘free stuff’ she was gifted. Ginger says: ‘I cleared out one of their spare rooms and they told me I could keep anything I wanted – I found a box filled with gift cards and over $400 (£322) worth of quarters.’

And meals cooked by the family’s private chef were another plus. ‘I would get to work in the morning and their private chef would ask me what I wanted to eat. There was always a million staff coming and going,’ she says.

Chef-prepared dishes are something Sami Jean Williams also enjoys daily in her role as a nanny – she frequently shares videos of these lunches and dinners with her 27,000 followers on TikTok.

Originally from Prince Edward Island in Canada, Sami has spent the Past two years working for uber-rich families – with billionaires among her employers – in the U.S.

In her videos, Sami, who is currently working for a family in Miami, reveals that other perks of the job include travelling by private jet, swimming in families’ private pools and holidaying with families on their private yachts. ‘Some families take you on vacation if they want you to help,’ she explains.

A video she shared of a yacht holiday on the job – titled ‘life is good’ – has racked up more than eight million views, with one user, ‘Bella’, declaring Sami’s role the ‘dream job’. And ‘user423541’ commented: ‘Some people live incredible lives.’

Valerie DaBaldo documents her day-to-day life as a nanny on TikTok. 'The biggest perk is definitely the endless adventures and events I get to experience,' she reveals

Another North American TikToker, Katrina Martin, also offered insight into the glamorous holidays that can be part of the role in a series of viral videos.

In one clip, which has racked up more than 3.2million views, she admits: ‘My experience as a nanny was terrible, to say the least, but the one kind of interesting thing from my experience was that they took me with them on a family vacation to Turks and Caicos. We flew there on a private jet and we stayed in this insane villa – I’ve never seen anything like it.

‘It was giant. The staff there later told us that celebrities like Drake, Rihanna [and] countless Victoria’s Secret models had all stayed there.’

And luxury travel is a perk similarly enjoyed by nanny Valerie DaBaldo, 19, who is a university student and works as a live-in nanny in the summertime. Greece, Florida and Long Beach Island on the eastern coast of the U.S are among the destinations she has travelled to as part of the role.

Describing how wealthy host families travel, she tells MailOnline Travel: ‘They don’t take ordinary trips, it’s always top of the line… the biggest perk is definitely the endless adventures and events I get to experience with [my host family] because they can afford to bring a nanny along.’

She adds: ‘I also gain access to limited clubs and country clubs just by being their nanny.’

And the homes she stays in as a live-in nanny are equipped for a pampering lifestyle. She says: ‘Wealthy people have an endless amount of luxurious technology and access to luxurious places. The home I stay at now has two saunas, a steam room, [a] home gym and a personal [masseuse] that we can call whenever.’

Documenting her life as a nanny on TikTok, Valerie shared one video showing her enjoying the walk-in shower in her host family’s ‘$9million (£7.3million) beach house’ that has racked up nearly 40,000 views. Another shows her unwinding in their infrared sauna, while others show her sunbathing by the pool or on the beach during her time off work.

She also frequently shares outfit videos with her followers on TikTok, from bikinis for the beach to more laid-back looks for running errands.

Valerie says that while working, she spends ‘most travelling days exploring with [the family’s children], at the pool or beach’. She adds: ‘My role as a nanny mainly comes at night when they’d like to visit a theme park or when they need a ride somewhere.’

Naturally, this exposure to luxury also applies to nannies hired by A-list stars, TikToker Rachel DiBease reveals.

Now a model and content creator, she spent several years working as a nanny for famous families in the U.S and tells her followers: ‘As a celebrity nanny you are exposed to a different kind of wealthy.’

In one TikTok video, she reveals how she received gifts such as a Gucci bag from one of her employers and in another, she describes how one of the high-profile families she worked for ‘had an elevator put in [to their home], a bowling alley, a sauna, a game room with Skee-Ball [arcade machine]… just everything’.

What about pay? New Jersey native DiBease worked as a medical assistant before becoming a nanny and admits that the career change quadrupled her annual salary.

She says that in the U.S, nannies working for celebrities and high-profile clients are paid annual salaries that range from $75,000 (£61,000) to $175,000 (£142,000). ’They are very high paying, almost always six-figure positions,’ she admits.

This set salary isn’t the only financial perk to the role. DiBease says: ‘I trialled with families who were open to giving me a living stipend if I lived in New York or California where the cost of living is really expensive… that’s something that a lot of families offer.’ Paid time off and a 401(k) – a retirement savings plan – are also common, she explains.

So how do you become a high-profile nanny? There are nanny agencies designed specifically for high net-worth families, DiBease reveals. Among them are agencies such as ‘The Nanny League’ and ‘Elite Nannies’.

When it comes to interviewing for the role, DiBease notes that wealthy families ‘really look for individuality’ from their nannies. It also helps if you’re bilingual, she adds.

More than a million lives have been saved over the past four decades thanks to cancer advances, analysis shows.

UK cancer death rates have fallen by about a quarter since the mid 1980s, in a ‘golden era’ of improved diagnosis and treatment.

The rise in screening programmes and a drastic fall in smoking have combined to stop a further 1.2 million lives being lost, according to Cancer Research UK.

Cancer mortality rates peaked in 1985 for men and 1989 for women, and have since fallen by 24 per cent.

Cancer Research UK chief executive Michelle Mitchell said: ‘A huge number of people have reached milestones in their lives they didn’t think they’d see.’

But the charity said cancer remains the UK’s leading cause of death when all types are combined, and warned that ‘enormous strain’ on the NHS puts further progress at risk.

The latest analysis comes weeks after it was announced that many cancer waiting time targets will be controversially dropped, amid claims they slow down diagnosis and treatment.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said that Woody Harrelson is probably unaware of the backlash to his wearing a ‘Kennedy 2024’ cap because the actor lives off grid.

Harrelson posed for a photo with the Democratic presidential candidate’s actress wife Cheryl Hines earlier this week while wearing a blue ballcap endorsing Kennedy.

Reaction was strong on social media but Kennedy, campaigning in Iowa on Saturday, doubts that the actor has heard any of it.

‘I’ve texted with him. You know, he’s very hard to get a hold of. He’s been a friend for many, many years. He’s very close to me and Cheryl,’ Kennedy said.

He added texting with the former Cheers star is usually a long shot anyway, given Harrelson’s lifestyle.

‘One thing is he doesn’t like cell phones. It’s conceivable that he does not know about all of the controversy,’ Kennedy told Fox News

‘He doesn’t watch TV. He doesn’t have his cell phone and he’s kind of off the grid.’

The 66-year-old donned a blue ‘Kennedy 2024’ cap in the snap with his Wilson co-star Hines, posted on Thursday.

‘Great seeing you Woody’, Hines posted without elaborating. But commentators were quick to suggest it was an endorsement.

Her post contained the tags ‘#friends #hats #rfkjr.’

Harrelson joined New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers as the latest celebrity endorser of the anti-vaxxer vying to challenge President Joe Biden in 2024.

Polls have him in a distant second, and recent claims about COVID have sparked controversy.

Nevertheless, some Democratic stalwarts worry his campaign could harm President Joe Biden’s reelection effort, particularly if the president is forced to stay away from New Hampshire after the Democratic National Committee gave South Carolina an early primary slot in a diversity push.

That infuriated New Hampshire officials who jealously guard their first-in-the-nation status, and could provided a venue for Kennedy to try to wound Biden.

Biden has a wide lead over Kennedy in Democratic primary polls. But he continues to have low national approval ratings hovering around 40 percent, while facing a Green Party challenge from Dr. Cornel West and a potential ‘No Labels’ third party run.

That along with a primary challenge could sap his strength even if he is up against rival Donald Trump, who is facing multiple indictments.

Harrelson has called himself ‘an anarchist,’ and has railed against the nation’s foreign wars, once comparing President Barack Obama to Richard Nixon.

He played former John McCain advisor Steve Schmidt in the movie adaptation of the political book ‘Game Change.’ That prompted a question by Politico if he disliked Democrats as much as he did Republicans.

‘It’s all synchronized swimming to me,’ said the former Natural Born Killers and Kingpin co-star.

‘They all kneel and kiss the ring. Who’s going to take on the oil industry or the medical industry?,’ he said in the 2013 interview.

‘People compare Obama to Lyndon Johnson, but I think a better comparison is between Obama and Nixon. Because Nixon came into office saying he was going to pull out of Vietnam, and then he escalated the war,’ he said.

‘I don’t believe in politics. I’m an anarchist, I guess you could say. I think people could be just fine looking after themselves,’ he said.

A farmer who lives off-grid in rural Kentucky is the star of a new YouTube video, which lays bare his very stripped back lifestyle and how he is on the quest for love.

Titus Morris has been living in a remote part of the Appalachian Mountains for eight years with no electricity, mains water, no cell phone, no car and even no shoes in the summer.

In an hour-long documentary made by YouTuber Peter Santenello, Titus sheds light on what his day to day routine looks like, with farming potatoes, doing laundry in the neighboring river and feeding his horses being among his daily tasks.

At one point, he reveals his monthly expenditure is around $140 and he makes a small income by training and shoeing horses.

After being brought up in a ‘very religious’ family, Titus continued living as simply as possible

His outgoings include $90 a month for a landline telephone, which has been installed in a shed by his trailer home so he can share it with a neighbor.

He then spends around $20 a month on food for his dogs Sadie and Spartacus and another $30 on produce he can’t grow, such as bananas and Himalayan salt.

After being brought up in a ‘very religious’ family, Titus continued living as simply as possible.

While his parents have a computer and electricity, he decided to take things back to basics even further.

He says he lives in a similar way to the Amish community, but he does not follow their religion and practices pure Christianity instead.

Adding to the mystery, he has no official form of ID.

His parents got him a social security number for him as a child but he never signed it and later decided to revoke it.

Then, his birth certificate washed away in a flood and he has never had a driver’s license.

He tells viewers: ‘I don’t exist in the eyes of the government but I do exist in the lives of people that know me and my Father in heaven.’

While it has a normal kitchen installed, none of the appliances work, and Titus disconnected the electricity when he moved in.

During the summer, he likes to cook on a wood burning stove on his front porch as it gets too hot inside.

In line with his religious beliefs, Titus does not eat any meat and he never had any dairy or egg products growing up.

He shows documentary maker Peter that one of his favorite meals consists of red potatoes, purple onions and kale with a sprinkle of pink Himalayan salt for flavor.

He says his plant-based diet has not impacted his athleticism, and throughout the documentary he demonstrates his strength, doing everything from climbing trees, to backwards rolling off his horse to scaling a rope into the loft of his barn.

Titus also says he is generally in good health and this year he hasn’t been sick at all, ‘not even a stuffy nose.’

He explains: ‘My thought is eat lots of healthy food, breath deep fresh air, try seeing God, get exercise and do things that strengthen your immune system so then your immune system is strong enough.’

There is a small outhouse as a toilet, and Titus has formed a dam in the creek, so a deeper pool of water serves as a bath.

This is fine during the summer months, but during the winter it can get a little chilly.

When it gets cooler, Titus also starts wearing shoes again as he says it’s ‘not healthy’ to go barefoot in the cold.

While he content on his farm, Titus says there are a couple of things that would be useful.

Firstly, he says a refrigerator would be ‘handy,’ as currently he has to keep goods cool in the creek.

He explains: ‘I can put stuff in the creek and it will keep overnight. Like, if I have beans leftover or something I can put them in a pot in the creek and they’ll stay good overnight.’

But over a refrigerator, Titus’ biggest wish is to find someone to share his life with.

While riding in his horse and carriage, which he uses instead of a car, he muses: ‘I think the only thing I’m missing really is someone to share this life with me and children.’

Titus has shared his landline with viewers in a bid to find love, and he says he can be reached at 606-448-4252.

However, as he is out working the land most days he says it is unlikely he will answer and it’s best to leave a voicemail instead.

As a further lure to any potential love interests, he says of his tucked away plot: ‘I wake up in the morning and there’s a green hill on that side and there’s a green hill on that side and I just have my own little peaceful valley here.’

I’m with my family flying economy to Greece from London Stansted Airport – but at check-in we feel like VIPs. And there’s almost a party atmosphere.

We’re on a week-long package trip with Jet2holidays – and fast discovering why it was rated by Which? as 2023’s joint-best beach and resort package holiday provider. And the Which? Travel Brand of the Year 2022.

Next door, the Ryanair check-in area is mundane and functional, while here at the Jet2 bag drop there’s a cheery fun-fair vibe, with a comedy pilot and cabin crew ‘face in hole’ photo board, fake palm trees, deck chairs and an archway formed of red-and-white balloons marking the start of the queue system.

And Jet2holidays staff in bright-red T-shirts are positioned every 20 yards, ready to help with travel queries, distribute stickers to children and offer assistance with the bag-drop machines.

Our 2.50pm July 22 Boeing 737 flight to the Ionian gem of Kefalonia is delayed by around 90 minutes due to air traffic control restrictions and congestion. And someone tripping the fire alarm at the gate.

The carnival atmosphere dissipates.

But we perk up once we’re airborne, despite our row – number 11 – having one of the dreaded ‘windowless‘ window seats.

It’s a fun flight. The crew are chirpy, the pilots sound chipper over the PA and the food we pre-ordered is a cut above the fare offered by rival budget airlines flying out of the UK.

We parents have Four Cheese Tortellini & Mediterranean Vegetables (£10) and a Moroccan Vegetable Tagine (£10), while our six-year-old daughter has Macaroni Cheese (£7.50).

The adult meals come with delicious pots of chocolate mousse, plus crackers and cheese, while the little one gets extra treats including Cadbury Buttons, Bear Yoyo fruit snacks and a smoothie – plus a little activity pack with crayons.

At coastal Kefalonia International Airport a text pops through from ‘Angie’, our Jet2holidays customer helper, with a number to call in case we need help – and reps are on hand to direct us to our hotel-transfer coach waiting outside the terminal. It’s not a long ride – around 10 minutes.

We’re staying at the 34-room Electra Kefalonia Hotel & Spa – which is fairly nondescript, but modern, comfortable and relaxing with friendly and attentive staff, a lovely terrace-side swimming pool and views of the glistening Ionian Sea.

We love our spacious sea-view executive room with its huge private plunge pool, the consistently tasty food served in the restaurant and the thumbs-up-worthy local white wine on offer (Kefalonia has a deserved reputation for quality wine).

Jet2holidays says on its website that ‘it’s sure to impress’ and gives it a ‘four-star plus’ rating, which feels about right, though some may feel the ‘plus’ is being generous given the ‘Marmite’ location.

The property is only half a kilometre from the end of the international airport runway and airliners whoosh overhead once an hour, so close that their wake disturbs the palm trees on the front lawn.

I find all this quite thrilling. There’s something enticingly exotic about the pool/palm-tree/plane combo, but my partner isn’t quite so enamoured and rolls her eyes as I stare at the airliners touching down after they’ve buzzed the Electra sunbeds.

Planes aside, we both agree that the Electra is a good base for exploring the island.

We make our forays around its twisty, spaghetti-like thoroughfares in a Thrifty hire car booked through Jet2 that we pick up at the airport, the keys handed over at the desk by a wonderfully cheerful lady.

And it’s a scam-free process.

Car-hire firms are notorious for pushing their insurance policies. I have my own insurance though, and brace for a hard sell on buying Thrifty’s – but it never comes. My disclosure about already being covered is met with an exclamation of ‘oh, perfect!’

Kefalonia is a gem of an island located in the Ionian Sea

Electra receptionist Georgios, meanwhile, kindly steers us towards some of Kefalonia’s most enticing beaches and villages, marking them out on a freebie tourist map he hands us.

There’s a Jet2 information folder at reception crammed with ideas and tours to book, but Georgios’s advice suffices for us.

Our car is a Toyota Aygo, which has a piddly sewing-machine engine and offers no pull at all in second gear up any sort of incline (and on eye-catchingly mountainous Kefalonia there are inclines left, right and centre).

At first, I curse it, and come close to taking it back to Mrs Cheerful at Thrifty for an upgrade, but after a few days of discovering that the Aygo is a doddle to park in congested beach car parks and to squeeze past oncoming traffic on hair-raisingly narrow village roads, I have a change of heart. The bigger the better? When it comes to cars on a Greek island, definitely not.

The itinerary highlight village-wise is picture-perfect Assos on the north-west coast, which has a bijou, swimmable harbour with a small beach – and multiple taverna options. We have lunch at Estiatorio Platanos, set slightly back from the water, where the service is friendly and the kid goat with lemon, yoghurt and rice an absolute winner.

We also visit a few beach-only spots.

Georgios had become very animated about pebbly Antisamos beach on the east coast, around an hour’s drive from the hotel. ‘This is my favourite, this is my favourite,’ he’d exclaimed.

So we give it a whirl – and are spellbound by its location in a stunning forested bay at the end of a seductively scenic road. However, there are several bars there and one is playing dance music at an obscenely high volume when we visit, which ruins the atmosphere. Gangs of marauding wasps add further irritation.

We have a much better time at Ai Helis beach, which lies a few minutes’ drive from the Electra in a small bay flanked by cliffs. Parking spaces nearby are limited, but we sneak the Aygo in and snare a couple of sun loungers.

Al Helis is well organised, with a lifeguard, a small bar and an at-lounger food and drink service. It’s also blessed with golden sand, though it’s 39C on our visit and too hot to walk on barefoot.

After a couple of hours we retreat to the shady Sea Salt restaurant, which overlooks the beach from halfway up one of the cliffs. There we devour top-end Greek salads as beachgoers beneath us dart back and forth across the hot grains between their loungers and the exquisite azure waters.

Getting back to the airport at the end of our break for our 9.05pm flight is a breeze – a Jet2 transfer coach picks us all up at the end of the hotel’s driveway, with the firm having texted beforehand with instructions about where to wait and how to contact them by WhatsApp or via the customer helpline in the event the transfer doesn’t arrive.

The coach is on schedule and waiting for us at the terminal are Jet2holidays’ sincerely chirpy staff, giving out more stickers, engaging in gentle banter and doing their best to curtail the onset of back-to-work blues.

As we touch down in Stansted I reflect on our trip and conclude that Jet2holidays needs to keep the Brasso on standby for the Which? 2024 awards…

TRAVEL FACTS

Ted and his family are hosted by Jet2holidays on a bed-and-breakfast basis at the Electra Kefalonia Hotel & Spa. The full cost of his peak-season seven-night package for three people was £4,584, including car hire at £366.28.

Jet2holidays offers multiple hotel options for Kefalonia.

Ted’s return flight lands at around 11pm. He stays with his family at the Hampton by Hilton London Stansted Airport hotel before returning home to London the following day.

THE VERDICT – WITH STAR RATINGS OUT OF 5.

PROS: The almost legendary Jet2.com customer service lives up to the hype, the hotel impresses just as Jet2 promised it would and the flights there and back are good as they get for a budget airline.

CONS: The hotel location near the airport, while extremely convenient, might bother some due to planes whooshing overhead.

They are smarter than your average bear.

As the smallest of the bear family, sun bears are often not remarked for their size, but are more well known for their above average intelligence.

Experts told MailOnline that the animals are ‘incredibly clever’ as they are able to remember the locations of food and mimic each other’s facial expressions to communicate.

And while they have no special evolutionary link to any primates, their ability to stand upright and their unusually straight limbs can trick some into believing they are more human-like than they really are.

It therefore comes as no surprise that the behaviour and looks of one sun bear in China have left people around the world debating whether she really is a bear or a person in a costume.

Kim Vaughan, Section Leader of Primates and Small Mammals at Paradise Wildlife Park told MailOnline: ‘All ursids [members of the bear family] can stand due to their strong physique.

‘Their limbs are straighter unlike terrestrial carnivores, Plantigrades disturb their weight to their back feet which provides excellent balance and standing.

‘Sun bears are incredibly clever, they can remember locations of food and have complex facial expressions to communicate.’

The creatures will often stand up right for a greater view of their surroundings or to help them smell far-off objects. Like other bears it can also be a defence behaviour to protect their territory.

Ironically, sun bears are nocturnal creatures and instead get their name from the yellow cresecent shape on their chest, which is said to resemble a setting sun.

The species is also known as the ‘honey bear’ due to its love for honey – which it extracts by using its long tongue.

They are found living in forests across Southeast Asia, from southern China to eastern India and as far south as Indonesia, and while they are playful with other sun bears they are largely solitary animals.

Sun bears are omnivores and eat a mixture of fruits, berries and roots as well as instects, small birds and lizards.

Sun bears have extremely long claws, which can exceed four inches, making them well adpated for climbing as well as ripping open trees and termite nests in search for food.

They have also been known to use their claws to pick open locks, with one captive bear having used its claws to open a cupboard locked by a key to retrieve some honey inside.

Sun bears have also been observed opening their mouths to match their playmates when they are interacting face-to-face.

In the behavioural study, researchers found that bears can use facial expressions to communicate with others in a similar way to humans and apes.

Researchers claim that such facial mimicry has not been seen in primates outside humans and gorillas.

They said that this ‘strongly suggests’ that other mammals could also perform this complex social skill and, in addition, have a degree of social sensitivity.

Sun bears are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to the illegal bear bile farm trade found in Southeast Asia.

Bear bile farming is an illegal trade that sadly has devasted sun bears, moon bears and brown bears across Asia and parts of Europe.

The increasing rate of deforestation across Southeast Asia has also lead to a decline in the species’ populations as they are largely forest dependant.

One sun bear in Hanzhou Zoo, in China, has this week left people around the world baffled since footage of the human-like zoo animal first emerged – with fans debating whether she really is a bear or a person in a costume.

Suspicion around the bear’s human-like ways first arose online after the sun bear was seen standing, begging for food, and seemingly waving like a person might.

The camera angle also showed an unflattering view of sagging fur around the cretaure’s behind – which many suggested made it look like a costume.

Dr Wong Siew Te, a Malaysian wildlife biologist and sun bear specialist, added he ‘didn’t know whether to laugh or cry’ when he heard the allegations about the human-like bear, named Angela, which lives in Hanzhou Zoo, China.

‘There is no doubt that it is a sun bear. I currently have four rescue sun bears in my centre and it shows that people know very little about them,’ he told The Mirror.

Dr Wong did sympathise with people who mistook the bear, named Angela, for a human however, pointing out that zoos in China have previously ‘made up fake stuff’.

When Dr Wong himself first saw a sun bear, he said, ‘I… was like: ‘Wow and yes it looks like a human’s wearing a bear suit’, but this is just sun bear and that is what is amazing’.

Dr Ashleigh Marshall, an expert from Chester Zoo, also weighed in on the clip. She told the BBC that the animal ‘is definitely a real bear’.

She explained that the folds on its back, assumed to be evidence of an ill-fitting costume, help protect the bear from predators, as the looseness allows the bear to ‘turn around in their skin’ and fight back if grabbed.

The zoo was quick to dismiss claims the animal playing dress-up and has insisted that Angela is a real bear, explaining that sun bears can look a little different to what people might expect.

A spokesperson said: ‘When it comes to bears, the first thing that comes to mind is a huge figure and astonishing power.

‘But not all bears are behemoths and danger personified.’

They were also careful to dismiss claims Angela was a person in a suit, adding: ‘If you get someone to wear such thick fur in this summer heat, they won’t last more than a few minutes before they need to lie down.

‘We are a government-operated zoo. There will never be situations like that.’

Hope for thousands with ADHD as scientists say new brain treatment can ‘transform’ lives of sufferers

  • University of Surrey researchers recruited 23 unmedicated children with ADHD
  • They took a two-week programme of brain stimulations and cognitive training
  • More than half showed significant improvements in symptoms after the 2 weeks

A brain treatment that eases symptoms of ADHD could ‘transform’ the lives of children and their families, experts say.

Scientists have discovered non-invasive brain stimulation, combined with cognitive training, can significantly improve symptoms of the disorder in youngsters.

The condition is renowned for affected people’s attention, activity and impulsivity, and affects around 5 per cent of children in the UK.

Current treatment includes medicine or therapy, or a combination of both.

As part of a new clinic trial the team, including researchers from the University of Surrey, recruited 23 unmedicated children aged between six and 12 who had ADHD.

The children underwent a two-week programme of brain stimulation that involved running a mild electrical current on the brain through two electrodes.

This took place while the children received cognitive training, which focuses on building specific skills such as attention, problem solving or reading comprehension.

They found 55 per cent of the children showed significant improvements in their ADHD symptoms, as reported by their parents.

This was compared to 17 per cent of children in the control group who received a placebo brain stimulation during cognitive training.

Improvements were maintained three weeks after the end of the treatment, the researchers said.

They also detected changes in the children’s brain electrical activity patterns that continued at the follow-up appointment.

Professor Roi Cohen Kadosh, co-lead of the study, said: ‘I believe that the scientific community is duty-bound to investigate and develop evermore effective and longer-lasting treatments for ADHD.

‘The findings we demonstrate in our study suggest that a combination of transcranial direct current stimulation (tRNS), which is shown to be safe with minimal side effects, has the potential to transform the lives of children and their families.

‘The results from this proof-of-concept study, together with previous results we received using tRNS, increase our confidence that in the future non-invasive brain stimulation may be able to provide an alternative to medication as a treatment pathway for children.’

Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem also worked on the study, published in the journal Translational Psychiatry.

Dr Mor Nahum, from the Hebrew University, added: ‘This is an important first step in offering new therapeutic options for ADHD.

‘Future studies, with larger and more varied samples, should help establish this as a viable therapy for ADHD, and help us understand the underlying mechanisms of the disorder.’

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

It affects around five per cent of children in the US. Some 3.6 per cent of boys and 0.85 per cent of girls suffer in the UK.

Symptoms typically appear at an early age and become more noticeable as a child grows. These can also include:

  • Constant fidgeting
  • Poor concentration
  • Excessive movement or talking
  • Acting without thinking
  • Inability to deal with stress
  • Little or no sense of danger
  • Careless mistakes
  • Mood swings
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty organising tasks
  •  Continually starting new tasks before finishing old ones
  • Inability to listen or carry out instructions

Most cases are diagnosed between six and 12 years old. Adults can also suffer, but there is less research into this.

ADHD’s exact cause is unclear but is thought to involve genetic mutations that affect a person’s brain function and structure.

Premature babies and those with epilepsy or brain damage are more at risk.

ADHD is also linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, Tourette’s and epilepsy.

There is no cure.

A combination of medication and therapy is usually recommended to relieve symptoms and make day-to-day life easier.

The world has embarked on a new era of exciting technologies – and experts reveal how augmented reality, robotics and artificial intelligence are poised to change our daily lives in almost unimaginable ways.

Mike Rhodes, CEO & Founder of ConsultMyApp, told DailyMail.com that he predicts contact lenses will display information on our eyes, AR will merge our reality with a digital world and AI will help us speak to each other telepathically,

With PwC predicting that artificial intelligence could add $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030 (more than the output of China and India combined), we’re on the verge of the biggest technological transformation in history.

DailyMail.com took Rhodes’s ideas, among others, and brought them to life using the popular AI art generator Midjourney to create images of what these technological breakthroughs might look like.

People will wear AR contact lenses

Augmented reality contact lenses will enable people to explore digital worlds. Experts predict the devices will display the same information as our current phones

Augmented reality contact lenses will enable people to explore digital worlds. Experts predict the devices will display the same information as our current phones

Instead of carrying smartphones, people will use AI contact lenses to display the information they get from their phones now, Rhodes told DailyMail.com.

‘Progress with AR technology is stumbling around in the dark right now, looking for an answer to bring it into the light and mass adoption,’ he said.

‘AR contact lenses that don’t obstruct the user’s daily activity could bring incredible opportunities for AR technology by providing consumers with an interface that lets them both live and work reality while having full access to the internet, all in the eye of the beholder!

‘We’re already seeing companies such as Mojo Vision realizing this is the holy grail (albeit running out of capital in the process), and there will be many more to follow in their footsteps with larger pockets.’

AI will enable us to be telepathic

Midjourney created images showing unique headsets with AI that beam thoughts between people

According to Dr Clare Walsh, Director of Education at the Institute of Analytics, artificial intelligence will enable machines to peer inside our minds – and could make humans telepathic.

‘Mind reading may no longer be a thing of science fiction. Researchers have already trained Chat GPT1 to translate MRI imagery into a textual description of an image that a person is looking at, or a scene that is unfolding in front of the person’s eyes, Dr Walsh said.

‘The good news is that MRI scanners are not portable, and so it’s unlikely that anyone will read your mind without your being aware any time soon!’

We will have ‘digital doppelgangers’ to improve our health

'Digital twins' of our bodies could spark a health revolution by letting doctors explore the anatomy like never before

‘Digital twins’ of our bodies could spark a health revolution by letting doctors explore the anatomy like never before

In industry, digital twins are simulations of real-world objects fed with data.

For example, a digital twin of a wind turbine offers engineers the chance to diagnose problems without visiting the site.

But in the future, we might have digital twins of our own bodies, 3D models which pulse with our real health data, according to researchers at NTT Research.

A ‘bio digital twin’ might offer doctors the chance to see how a patient would respond to drugs – before prescribing them.

Chris Shaw, Chief Marketing Officer, NTT Research, Inc said that NTT is trying to build a model of the human body, but, ‘Tuning that generic model to create an individual digital twin will involve complex breakthroughs in data and mathematics. And, it will also take time—decades for full realization of this project’s potential.

‘But the fundamental research being performed today will save lives tomorrow, with the bio digital twin rewriting our understanding and administration of precision medicine.’

Each of us will have an AI ‘butler’

AI butlers will live in our homes to adhere to our daily needs

AI butlers will live in our homes to adhere to our daily needs

Advances in AI will see humans becoming reliant on AI ‘servants’ who will remind them to prepare meals, help to hit workout goals and stay on top of their work schedule, says Martin Kraemer, security awareness advocate at KnowBe4.

Kraemer believes the ‘assistants’ will exist in augmented reality – as people’s lives increasingly move into the virtual world.

Kraemer says, ‘We will see intelligent personal assistants that can solve complex tasks, e.g., complex route planning and scheduling.

‘Advances in artificial general intelligence (sometime between 2030 and 2050) will make this possible. Large Language Models will be able almost perfectly to understand human language.

Voice synthesis enables computers to talk.

Many scheduling and route planning tasks will be complex or even NP-hard. Parallel signal processing with quantum computing will unlock the required computing power and resources. ‘

People will swallow digital pills to pre-diagnose illness

Digital pills fitted with sensors will change medicine by letting doctors see inside our bodies like never before

Digital pills fitted with sensors will change medicine by letting doctors see inside our bodies like never before

In the near future, people might swallow sensors to diagnose conditions before they affect them, building on today’s trend for health-monitoring wearables.

Start-ups such as Celsius already offer health wearables – Celsius’s wristband detects hot flushes and cools the wearer down.

But in future, people might swallow a digital pill with ingestible sensors to get ‘pre-warned’ of conditions that might affect them.

‘Passive diagnosis’, where conditions are diagnosed before they affect patients, might become the norm.

Futurist Shivvy Jervis said Swallowing a ‘digital pill’ isn’t for everyone, and early trials and examples have shown that people either love it or hate it.

‘For some people, however, there isn’t much of a choice, Jervis continued.

‘Those with compromised immune systems, undergoing chemotherapy, or who are already struggling with life-threatening medical conditions must know early if something else is coming.

‘The surprise could be fatal.

‘Fitness wearables started the passive diagnosis trend but is heading in a much more mainline medical direction.

‘It should always be an individual’s choice, and this technology must be compliant with the patient’s privacy preferences to reflect their best interests at all times.’

People will replace body parts with robotics

Will people augment their bodies with robot parts?

Will people augment their bodies with robot parts?

People will use anti-aging drugs and replacement body parts to defeat aging, said Michelle Dand, Head of Fitness products at David Lloyd Clubs.

Dand said that older people will be fitter and healthier than ever before.

‘The rate at which technology is developing in the fields of robotics and human augmentation, many of the natural stages of aging that can hold us back are likely to be eliminated in the next 40 years,’ he explained.

‘From robotics technology in our limbs counteracting the effects of arthritis to implants improving cognitive ability and directly tapping into our nervous systems, the likelihood is by the 2060s we won’t just be living longer, but we’ll be in better health than ever before.’

Talking humanoid robots will be everywhere

Robots will take over the manual and even caring roles

Robots will take over the manual and even caring roles

Talking humanoid robots will rapidly become common, driven partly by recent AI breakthroughs such as ChatGPT, says futurist Bernard Marr, author of Future Skills: The 20 Skills and Competencies Everyone Needs to Succeed in a Digital World.

The robots will work in everything from construction to the caring professions.

Marr said that machines will contribute to human society in ways we cannot yet imagine – as long as ethical considerations are considered.

‘Looking forward, the potential applications of humanoid androids span a multitude of industries,’ Marr continued.

\Their potential is vast, from performing dangerous tasks in hazardous environments to assisting in healthcare to personalized services in retail and hospitality.

‘The challenge is not merely about advancing technology but ensuring it aligns with and supports the values and needs of our human society. The ‘AI boom,’ thus, is not an end in itself but a tool that, if used thoughtfully, can bring about significant societal benefits.’

The Babel Fish will become a reality

Technology will enable us to talk to anyone - no matter the language they speak

Technology will enable us to talk to anyone – no matter the language they speak

People can talk to anyone anywhere on Earth in any language in real-time, said Liz Hawke, Product Manager UC&C at M247.

Brain implants will permit people to talk to each other instantly, in a development of today’s unified communications.

Hawke says, ‘If you’re familiar with the Babel Fish in ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy’ – a classic sci-fi film – you’ll know how it allowed for near-perfect communication with a myriad of alien species.

‘This century could see advances in the scientific movement of transhumanism, whereby human capabilities are augmented by nanotechnology, and communication platforms will evolve from standard devices like laptops or smartphones to devices that will allow true communication with anyone and anywhere.

Quantum computing – which uses the bizarre properties of quantum computing to supercharge processing – will make it possible to predict the future.

Rather than using traditional ‘bits’ of ones and zeroes, quantum computers use ‘qubits’ where the numbers can be one, zero or both simultaneously.

This century, quantum computing is expected to unlock huge amounts of processing power, according to Chris Hacket of Face Digital, which advises financial services firms.

‘You could make stunningly accurate market predictions, optimize investments, and even manage risk in ways we’ve never dreamed possible,’ Hackett said.

‘Imagine logging into your online banking and being offered financial advice based on hyper-accurate predictions.

‘Imagine being able to navigate your financial journey with confidence, knowing that the suggestions given to you are based on data crunched by a quantum computer.

‘Picture an ‘Avatar Advisor,’ a holographic AI representation using quantum computations and AGI. It pops up whenever you need financial advice, turning complex data into easy-to-understand visuals, graphs, and charts.’

The internet will be a 3D world

The internet will become so powerful it will display information in 3D -changing how we explore the world

Instead of a ‘flat’ internet visited through smartphones, we will all have 3D avatars which we use to explore everything from shopping to entertainment, says Simon Windsor, founder of NFT project and virtual world, Metashima, and co-founder of virtual production studio, Dimension

Windsor believes that it will become normal to experience the internet in 3D.

The metaverse is effectively going to start us on a transition from 2D to 3D content and I think this transition will start in earnest with how we present our identities online,’ he said.

‘Most people online have a digital profile of some form, and that is normally all 2D imagery, video, and text – think of the likes of Instagram and TikTok.’

‘The point of the metaverse is that it’s a virtual universe where you can access all of the value of the internet, but in a three-dimensional way, and you can do it with new opportunities in mind and new ways to experience things like entertainment.

‘But I believe that this major shift from experiencing the content in 3D rather than 2D will start with our virtual identities.’

Forget cultured meat, soon we will culture everything in labs – and maybe even our homes

Artificial meat has made headlines recently, but in the coming decades, everything from dairy products to vegetables will be grown in lab dishes, said Anthony Chow, Co-Founder of Agronomics.

Chow says that the technology, known as ‘cellular agriculture’, is the only technology that can increase food production without outpacing Earth’s resources.

Chow says, ‘Technologies such as precision fermentation have the power to completely revolutionize traditional industries, including the dairy and egg industry, towards a more sustainable future.

‘The adoption of cellular agriculture is crucial as we simply cannot feed today’s global population of eight billion people without causing irreversible damage to the natural environment, let alone the predicted population growth of an additional two billion people in the coming decades,’ Marr said.

House Republicans say that the FBI is violating a subpoena to turn over an alleged Biden ‘bribery’ document because the original informant’s life could be in danger if they are ‘unmasked’ – despite the names being redacted.

According to a ‘highly credible’ whistleblower, an internal FD-1023 memo created in 2020 based off information from a highly-paid FBI informant apparently details a $5 million ‘arrangement’ for an exchange of money for policy decisions between then-Vice President Joe Biden and a foreign national.

The leaders of the House Oversight Committee were granted access by the FBI Monday to view the redacted FD-1023 form in a secure facility within the Capitol. But it did not satisfy Republicans who are moving forward with contempt of Congress charges against FBI Director Chris Wray for failing to turn over the document in its entirety.

Following a committee meeting Monday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., told DailyMail.com that the Biden whistleblower in the alleged bribery scheme is now afraid ‘someone could kill them if someone found out who they are’ for bringing potentially damaging info to light about Joe Biden when he was vice president.

As a result Greene said the whistleblower now ‘fears for their own life because of our government.’

She also told DailyMail.com that the foreign nation involved in the $5 million money exchange was Ukraine, and that it happened seven years ago.

Greene said it’s ‘purely political’ that the FBI isn’t handing over the document to their lawmakers – which has the names of the informant and whistleblower redacted to protect their identities.

‘And their excuse, which we find to be completely false, is the FBI is claiming it is to protect their informants, even though the names are redacted,’ Greene told DailyMail.com.

Greene added that the FBI could take measures to protect the informant’s life if they ‘cared about doing the right thing.’

She directly accused Wray of protecting Biden by failing to hand over the document, which shows how ‘deeply political’ the Department of Justice is.

The Georgia congresswoman added that it is necessary to move forward with contempt charges against Wray because the information contained in the document is ‘so damaging and so dangerous to our national security’ that Americans need the facts.

‘The unclassified document should be in our hands right now.’

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also said Monday that the FBI is afraid the informant would be ‘killed’ if their identity is revealed.

‘Just left meeting for House Oversight. The FBI is afraid their informant will be killed if unmasked, based on the info he has brought forward about the Biden family,’ she stated in a tweet.

The Republicans issued a subpoena for the FD-1023 form last month and FBI Director Chris Wray was given a hard deadline of May 30 to hand over the unclassified document, which he did not comply with.

After reviewing the document Monday, Comer told reporters the accusations contained in the form ‘suggests a pattern of bribery’ consistent with findings the committee has put out publicly

It’s called ‘money laundering,’ he said, saying it fits within the pattern of over $1 million in Romanian-linked payments to the Biden family revealed last month.

In early May, Republicans released a report digging in on over $10 million received by Biden family members from foreign actors, including previously undisclosed $1 million in Romanian-linked payments, and a ‘web’ of 20 companies created while President Joe Biden was vice president and pushing anti-corruption efforts abroad.

He also said the FBI record was ‘not disproven’ and is currently being used in an ongoing investigation that is being conducted by the Department of Justice in Delaware into Hunter Biden’s finances.

The ‘confidential human source’ is a ‘trusted, highly credible informant’ who has been used by the FBI for over 10 years and has been paid over six figures, continued Comer.

The chairman added that contempt proceedings will begin this Thursday.

‘At the briefing, the FBI again refused to hand over the unclassified record to the custody of the House Oversight Committee, and we will now initiate contempt of Congress hearings this Thursday.’

‘The FBI has continually demonstrated its commitment to accommodate the committee’s request, including by producing the document in a reading room at the U.S. Capitol,’ the FBI said in a statement to DailyMail.com Monday.

‘This commonsense safeguard is often employed in response to congressional requests and in court proceedings to protect important concerns, such as the physical safety of sources and the integrity of investigations. The escalation to a contempt vote under these circumstances is unwarranted.’

Last week, Comer and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, spoke with Wray by phone and the FBI director offered to let them and Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., view the documents at the FBI headquarters in an attempt to stave off the contempt threat.

Comer also informed Wray that he was also narrowing the breadth of the subpoena for the document by providing two additional terms that may be referenced in the record: ‘June 30, 2020’ and ‘five million.’

Raskin blasted the Republicans’ handling of the document in a reporter gaggle following Monday’s briefing, calling it ‘second-hand hearsay.’

He said former U.S. Attorney Scott Brady for the Western District of Pennsylvania and then-Attorney General Bill Barr did not find any reason to escalate the investigation into all ‘allegations related to Ukraine’ based on the FD-1023 form.

‘I am just surprised that my colleagues want to try to litigate this in public, much less hold the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in contempt for complying with the request when there was a whole process that was undertaken, and that process came to its natural end as I understand it,’ Raskin said.

He would not directly confirm that the foreign national alleged in the memo being sought by Republicans is from Ukraine.

Raskin did agree with his Republican colleagues that the whistleblower is considered ‘credible.’

The White House has also pushed back, calling the Republican-led investigation ‘unfounded’ and ‘politically motivated.’

Last week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy backed up Comer’s contempt threat – saying he is ‘prepared’ to move forward with the charge.

‘We have jurisdiction over the FBI, which they seem to act like we do not,’ said McCarthy.

The FBI’s latest stonewalling also comes after a second IRS whistleblower came forward, claiming he was sidelined from the Hunter Biden probe when he spoke up about the president’s son getting preferential treatment.

The case agent, who has not been identified, says he was fired recently without any explanation after working on the Hunter Biden investigation since 2018, according to documents sent to congressional leaders obtained by DailyMail.com.

‘The information provided by a whistleblower raises concerns that then-Vice President Biden allegedly engaged in a bribery scheme with a foreign national,’ Comer said

This is the second whistleblower to come forward in recent days on the matter.

According to documents, he informed Congress last week about backlash he suffered for acting as a whistleblower and alleged unfair retaliatory treatment.

He sent an email in recent weeks to senior IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel and several other officials alleging that he was ousted for raising concerns that the Department of Justice was ‘acting inappropriately’ in its handling of the investigation into the president’s son.

His complaint comes days after the Department of Justice removed the entire team probing Hunter Biden’s tax returns, according to attorneys representing an initial supervisory whistleblower – Gary Shapley.

Shapley testified before the GOP-led Ways and Means Committee for six hours and answered all questions from both Republicans and Democrats, DailyMail.com learned.

It should be a photograph filled with happy childhood memories, but instead it tells the tragedy of a community torn apart by horrific child abuse.

The picture shows the 1973 Grade 4 class of St Alipius’ Christian Brothers School in Ballarat. In the second row from the front, standing fourth from the right with his head tilted is Philip Nagle.

As he looks at the image today, instead of bringing a smile to his face, it only stirs up feelings of sorrow and rage, as he claims 12 out of the 33 pupils pictured went on to commit suicide because of the sexual and physical abuse that took place at the school.

But Mr Nagle believes that what happened to his dead classmates will not be forgotten.

The 50-year-old was the first person called on Tuesday at the opening of the Royal Commission on Institutional Child Sex Abuse a paedophile ring involving Catholic clergy in Ballarat in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.

At the end of his testimony he asked for a minute’s silence to honour his 12 fellow classmates. His only hope now is that more people will go public about the heinous crimes that took place at St Alipius so that justice can still be done.

‘If more of my classmates come forward, the less of them will commit suicide (in the future). Because the ones not coming forward are the ones who are killing themselves. Twelve in my class committed suicide,’ Mr Nagle told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Nagle said that some did it indirectly after years of alcoholism and drug use, because they couldn’t deal with what was done to them.

‘Some of them didn’t even make it to 50 years of age, some didn’t even make it to 40. They reach a breaking point and can’t handle it anymore,’ he says.

Some of Australia’s most notorious abusers, including Gerald Ridsdale, Robert Best and Edward Dowlan, were part of a paedophile ring operating at St Alipius’ and St Patrick’s College.

Mr Nagle, 50, was repeatedly sexually assaulted by disgraced Stephen Farrell who was a Christian Brother at the school.

‘He was our teacher at the time. Because Risdale and others were such serial offenders the likes of Farrell flew under the radar,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Only three victims of Farrell have come forward – myself, my brother and another victim. From this he has 10 convictions. But because the likes of Risdale and Best had many victims who came forward and Farrell didn’t, he got off lightly.’

Farrell didn’t even go to jail. He was given a two years and three months suspended sentence for his offences.

‘The likes of Ridsdale got much more because his offences were so bad and more people came forward. But Farrell was part of the paedophile ring too,’ says Mr Nagle.

He knows other victims of Farrell but he was warned by the police not to go victim hunting and is not allowed to name them.

Ridsdale was jailed on paedophile charges in 1994 for molesting children between 1967 and 1987

‘I’ve spoken to a few of them but they’re not ready to do anything about it,’ he says.

What he had to endure at St Alipius’ is branded into his psyche. Nothing can erase the horrific ordeal he had to go through at the hands of Farrell.

‘He was too strong for me. I was just a nine-year-old boy. He’d just get you alone, wrestle you down and sexually assault you,’ Mr Nagle told Daily Mail Australia.

‘You’ve got to realise we were just little kids and they were full grown adults, so we had no chance.

‘They were supposedly men of God in their black robes. Priests and Christian Brothers were held in higher esteem that your parents back in those days, they were beyond reproach.

It all happened over a 12-month period. We were terrified. It ruined our lives.’

He is still devastated that Farrell didn’t go to jail, and believes that suspended sentences for these types of crime are just unacceptable.

His comments came as Gordon Hill, 72, told the inquiry on Wednesday he was taken to the St Joseph’s Home in Ballarat as a three-year-old in the 1946, and was initially abused by a priest at age five, in a place called ‘the horror rooms’.

But Nagle’s struggle for justice still goes on.

‘I don’t know what the inquiry will achieve unless they start getting some of these perpetrators to take the stand, but I was very happy with the process,’ he says.

‘In Ballarat we’re called “survivors”. We get together as a group of survivors of this atrocity and try to help these other victims live.’
