Black staff at Google make $20,000 less on average compared to their white coworkers and women are paid less than men in almost every department, according to leaked data reviewed by news site Insider.

The spreadsheets lay bare the salaries and bonuses of over 12,000 Google employees in white-collar roles across the search engine giant’s US offices nationwide.

Beyond numerous eye-popping six-figure and seven-figure sums, the tech company does not appear to be upholding the ‘equity’ portion of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy — with clear trends in unequal pay by race and gender.

The revelations come despite recurring news in recent years of Google managers attempting to ban ‘offensive’ terms like ‘man hours’ and ‘chubby,’ or company plans to flag politically incorrect terms for users within search bars and Google docs.

For Google's offices in the Big Apple, the average 'minimum base salary' came to a reported $48,000, barely enough to make rent within the city in 2023. And, at Google's offices around the San Francisco Bay Area, the average 'minimum base salary' was just $39,962

But, in keeping with these gestures toward ‘wokeness,’ the leaked salaries did show some outliers within Google, where pay-rates defied corporate stereotypes: women on Google’s sales team, for example, do earn more than men on average.

Google’s average ‘minimum base salary’ is lowest in two of the most expensive areas to live in the US: New York City and Silicon Valley.

For Google’s offices in the Big Apple, the average ‘minimum base salary’ came to a reported $48,000, barely enough to make rent within the city in 2023.

And, at Google’s many offices around California’s San Francisco Bay Area, which has the third highest cost of living of any city in America, the average ‘minimum base salary’ was just $39,962.

The statistic was culled from Google’s eight office locations across Silicon Valley and its surrounding suburbs, including: Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Francisco, San Bruno, South San Francisco, Redwood City, Palo Alto, San Jose

The data was compiled and shared internally by Googlers themselves, US employees who voluntarily submitted their 2022 salary, equity and bonus data.

Their spreadsheet was leaked to Insider, where data journalists crunched the numbers.

The pay data includes employees from many roles within the tech giant, including software engineers, business analysts, and salespeople.

It also included data tagged by race, showing that Google employees of Black or African descent made over $20,000 less, on average, than their White or Asian counterparts.

Indigenous and Hispanic/Latino employees also suffered from a pay disparity.

The issue may come down to company culture, as in the US as of 2023 the majority of Google’s American staff is either Asian (44.8 percent) or White (46.2 percent) based on the company’s own reporting.

Compensation at Google by race and ethnicity
Race  Base salary  Equity  Bonus percentage  Bonus
Asian $170,000 $88,000   43%   $31,000
Black/African descent $147,000  $50,500  40%  $25,000
Hispanic/Latino/Latinx $152,000   $70,000  43%  $28,000
Indigenous   $158,500  $92,000   N/A  $27,750
Middle Eastern/North African $171,000  $90,938  42% $29,700

Two or more races  $159,000  $78,535  41%  $29,478

The leaked spreadsheet also included data on the how employee compensation was divided by gender, with the oft-stated disparity between male and female employees proving true to stereotypes — except in sales.

Female employees in ‘enterprise direct sales’ and female sales strategists both appear to be making more than their male coworkers, with the direct sales team earning tens of thousands of dollars more in base salary alone.

Company-wide and among software engineers, nonbinary employees appeared to be earning less in base salary than either men or woman on staff.

When reached for comment on the leaked spreadsheet, Google spokesperson Tamani Jayasinghe replied, ‘We compensate Googlers based on what they do, not who they are.’

‘We run a rigorous pay equity analysis every year to make sure salaries, bonuses and equity awards are fair,’ Jayasinghe added. ‘This spreadsheet has old, self-reported data that has not been verified and is not an accurate representation of compensation across our workforce.’

While the accuracy of the leaked spreadsheet and the overall fair treatment of all these sub-groups among Google’s employees might be debatable, one thing that is certain is that Google employees are some of the highest paid in tech.

Including bonuses, and stock option equity stakes in the company, the median total compensation for the average Googler in 2022 was $279,802.

As noted in past reporting on the leaked dataset, the spreadsheet did not comprise a complete roster of Google talent, because it only goes up to level seven out of 11, meaning some earn far more than reported here

But the highest-paid person in the data set worked in human resources, managing all the rest.

In 2022, Google’s chief people officer, Fiona Cicconi, was reportedly paid a base salary of $1 million, according to Insider, which reports that other C-suite executives at the company enjoyed similar pay bump at the start of that year.

Dailymail.com has reached out to Google’s press team for comment and will update this story with the company’s reply.

WhatsApp is preparing to make some major changes to its platform, with new design features reportedly coming to both iPhone and Android.

Leakers claim that Mark Zuckerberg‘s messaging app could see a complete makeover in the coming months, with a series of design tweaks in the works.

Revamped colours and new buttons are reportedly among them, though WABetaInfo says these changes may initially vary depending on the device you own.

Meanwhile, conversation filters are reportedly part of both iPhone and Android tests, with users able to categorise messages into ‘All’, ‘Unread’, ‘Personal’ and ‘Business’.

‘We are very happy to announce that WhatsApp is finally working on improving the interface of the app by bringing a redesign,’ WABetaInfo wrote.

ANDROID

Conversation filters: In development

Multi-account options: Available to some Beta users but will be rolled out more widely in the coming days

Green tabs, notifications and time stamps: In development

New Settings button: Unclear

‘The redesign includes revamped buttons for the navigation bar, that will make the interface more modern.

‘In addition, WhatsApp also intends to add a filter row that will let users sort their chats using two filters: personal conversations and business chats.’

While many features are still in the development stages, leakers claim that some are being tested on WhatsApp Beta – a testing program that allows users to try out features before they are released more widely.

Images also hint that new colours have been more widely tested on iOS versions of WhatsApp, with notifications, time stamps and tabs switched from blue to a more brand appropriate shade of green.

Meanwhile, the so-called ‘2.23.18.18’ Android test has reportedly trialed a new menu title with the app’s name in green at the top.

Other tests have also looked into multi-account options too, meaning multiple profiles will function on a single device in future.

If true, it would put WhatsApp in line with Twitter, or ‘X’, which also allows users to switch between different accounts in a matter of seconds.

This comes just as Zuckerberg is at loggerheads with X owner Elon Musk over the new ‘Twitter-killer’ app Threads

As of now, it’s unclear if and when both iPhone and Android will be party to the same updates on Beta or the main app.

Conservation filters, new colours and the revamped menu tab are said to be in the development stages and not yet ready for Beta users.

But Android’s multi-account options are currently available to some and will be rolled out more widely in the coming days, leakers claim.

MailOnline has approached Meta for comment.

A video of Tesla shooting a promotional clip of its Cybertruck cruising through the snowy landscape of Iceland has been leaked online.

The EV was spotted driving behind another vehicle with a camera crew in the trunk, suggesting the Elon Musk-founded company is gearing up for the highly-anticipated launch –  about 1.5 million people have reserved one.

Early customers paid $100 to secure their model that has been delayed for more than three years.

But the video and Musk announcing the first unit rolling off the assembly line in July suggests the Cybertruck rollout is set to happen sooner than later.

A video of Tesla shooting a promotional clip of its Cybertruck cruising through the snowy landscape of Iceland has been leaked online

The footage comes one day after an internal email from Tesla surfaced that threatened to fire any employees caught taking pictures of the Cybertruck.

The communication is likely due to many leaks from staff working closely with the vehicle plagued by delays.

The email to employees reads: ‘Effective today, any employees or contractors found taking photos or videos on-site of anything related to the Cybertruck (e.g. vehicle, parts, production line, etc.) without an official business need/justification (i.e. dictated by job/scope and validated by Security during initial contact) will be immediately escorted off-site pending HR investigation and follow up contact.

‘The CT team will issue photo passes/stickers to appropriate personnel in the future to help expedite interactions with Security for business-related photography/videography.’

It is unclear who leaked the promotional video, but the footage suggests that the Cybertruck will likely handle it well in winter conditions.

But the shot points to Tesla ramping up marketing for the vehicle that is more than one-year delayed from its initial launch date.

The Cybertruck – starting at $39,000 –  became a sensation when revealed to the world in November 2019.

The celebrated event quickly became a nightmare for Musk after the glass on his new electric ‘Cybertruck’ was smashed just after he boasted about it being ‘shatterproof.’

During the announcement of the truck – which looks like an armored vehicle with angular sides – Tesla design chief Franz von Holshausen tried to prove the glass was ‘shatterproof’ by throwing a heavy metal ball at close range.

Musk was heard muttering ‘oh my f***ing God’ when the glass smashed.

Some speculated the hiccup may have been part of the show, but it did not stop people from reserving one for themselves.

The waitlist with no reservation is at least three years from when the first Cybertruck is delivered.

Musk had promised production would begin in early 2021, but that date slipped away. And each year, a new date is set and missed.

The CEO has previously blamed battery supply issues for the delay, saying that each Cybertruck would ‘literally cost a million dollars a piece or more’ if Tesla had started producing the futuristic vehicle in 2021.

However, in July, Musk finally made the first vehicle at the Giga Texas manufacturing facility in Austin.

A photo showed over 100 staff in hard hats and high-vis vests surrounding the vehicle at the 10 million square foot facility.

Two months before, the world received its first look of the interior, which caused a rift among fans.

One Twitter user said the ‘Cybertruck’s interior looks like it came from a 1980’s low budget sci-fi prop piece,’ while others called the dark gray cabin flat out ‘ugly.’

However, some users think the interior looks ‘simple and clean’ and ‘love the overall look.’

The images, shared on a Cybertruck enthusiast forum, have not been confirmed, but they show a massive interior screen, futuristic-looking seat controllers and a bare cabin.

The photos show a view from the driver and passenger seats and a side shot inside the Cybertruck, which Cybertruck Owners Club shared.

A massive display hangs in the center of the dash, but wires can be seen hanging from the back.

Twitter user Facts Chaser tweeted: ‘Nearly four years after its unveiling, why is the screen activated via this DIY wire assembly?’

The user also highlighted a feature to the diver’s left – a small window shaped like a diamond.

‘That A-pillar monstrosity looks like it would severely obstruct visibility,’ he tweeted.

The center console has a paneled design as the cover that slides open and closed, which looks like what was in the early Model S and X vehicles.

However, fans are more disappointed about the lack of a third middle seat in the front of the Cybertruck, which had been rumored since the vehicle’s debut in 2019.

What the seats do have are controllers fashioned in the same finish as the exterior and crafted in unique designs that some fans were overjoyed to see.

As the debut of Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 15, gets closer, leaks and rumors are pouring out of the supply chain and amplified online by gadget obsessives.

Now, multiple photos have emerged showing the new mobile device’s USB-C charging port — which may prove to annoy those tangled in their old cables, but will also help make the iPhone more compatible with a wider range of tech.

Apple rarely discloses the details of its upcoming iPhone before the official unveiling, but tech experts and patents usually give away what to expect.

The consensus at the moment is that the iPhone 15 will boast a game-changing titanium alloy frame and a larger battery, alongside the expanded interoperability that comes with the new USB-C charging port.

The new iPhone 15 photos were posted to X (formerly Twitter) by an account that describes itself as a China-based hardware technician as well as by a Tennessee-based programmer.

The images were posted to X (formerly Twitter) by user @lipilipsi, whose account is named ‘fix Apple’ and is self-described as a China-based ICC engineer for Apple and Chinese tech giant Huawei.

The posted images depict two USB-C ports with attached internal circuitry and ribbon cables. ‘fix Apple’ described it as the base model USB-C port for the iPhone 15, and the other as the USB-C for the iPhone 15 Plus.

A second account, Tennessee-based programmer @John011235, appeared to confirm this by posting the same components with the same labels, plus a third one identified as iPhone 15 Pro Max.

‘John’ also posted further pics of internal iPhone 15 components as well as images of the new iPhone 15 charging cable (see below), which was apparently for sale on a Chinese e-commerce site.

Previously, footage of an iPhone 15 Pro ‘dummy’ was leaked last April, where it surfaced on Douyin, the Chinese company’s sister version of TikTok.

Alongside the titanium-based frame and a new solid-state volume button, which will likely be replacing the mute switch, the dummy also included the new USB-C charging port in place of the usual Lightning port.

The swap follows in line with previous statements from Apple’s executive Greg Joswiak, who told reporters that the tech giant was ‘having to comply’ with new USB laws passed by the EU.

‘Obviously, we’ll have to comply; we have no choice, just as we do around the world to comply to local laws,’ Joswiak said.

‘But we think the approach would have been better environmentally and better for our customers to not have a government be that prescriptive.’

Although there’s clear demand for the company to replace its own Lightning charging technology — discernible by its eight pins — with USB-C the change to its charging port is bound to be controversial.

Apple’s history of switching cords and forcing consumers to purchase its proprietary versions has led to numerous customer complaints over the years.

A second X (formerly Twitter) account, Tennessee-based programmer @John011235, appeared to confirm previous leaks by posting the same components. 'John' also posted further pics of internal iPhone 15 components

Along with with these new hardware specs features, Apple is also suggested that the new mobiles device with will be powered with larger, improved batteries and wrapped in new colors — including some of the previous fan favorites.

Tech experts claim iOS users will have the options of a baby blue, mint green, pink and crimson shade when the smartphone launches in a few months.

An alleged Foxconn worker, the company that manufactures a bulk of Apple’s iPhones, told ItHome today that the iPhone 15 family is set to have larger batteries.

The iPhone 15 will feature an 18 percent larger battery, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro a 14 percent larger battery, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max a 12 percent larger battery.

The Cupertino-based company has not announced when it will release the new iPhone 15 family, but the event is typically held in September.

Kai Havertz’s announcement video and first Arsenal interview are ‘LEAKED’ – just hours after he was pictured in the club’s shirt – as he closes in on £65m move to the Gunners

  • Germany’s Kai Havertz is closing in on a £65m switch from Chelsea to Arsenal
  • The 24-year-old playmaker was pictured in an Arsenal shirt earlier this week
  • His announcement video and first Arsenal interview have now been leaked

Kai Havertz‘s £65m move to Arsenal appears to edging closer after his announcement video and first interview with the club were leaked online.

The Chelsea star has been negotiating a switch to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, and was pictured in an Arsenal shirt on Tuesday to give the clearest indication yet that the deal is set to go through.

A short announcement video has now been leaked on social media, with Havertz posing for the cameras wearing the red and white shirt of the Gunners.

The back of the shirt shows the No 29, with the German international set to continue wearing the same number that he had at Chelsea for three years.

A longer interview with Havertz has also made its way online, as he is seen speaking about his excitement at moving to the north London club.

Havertz tells Arsenal’s media team: ‘It’s super exciting for me personally. I’m so glad to join this amazing club, this club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of big things.

He also explained his reasoning for taking the No 29 once more, revealing that he always selected it when playing video games with his brother, and describing it as the ‘perfect number’.

Havertz’s imminent departure from Chelsea to join Arsenal means he will be playing in the Champions League next season, and the 24-year-old hailed the competition as a ‘special tournament’ after winning it with the Blues in 2021.

That was the highlight of his time at Stamford Bridge, as he netted the winner in the final against Manchester City to give Chelsea their first Champions League triumph in nine years.

That came at the end of an indifferent first season in England, and Chelsea fans hoped it would kickstart his Premier League career, but the attacking midfielder struggled to live up to expectations during his three-year stay in west London.

He is set to leave the club having played 139 times across all competitions, scoring 32 goals, with just nine of those coming last term as Chelsea finished down in 12th place.

Mikel Arteta clearly has faith in Havertz, though, and has pushed to sign him as Arsenal look to challenge for the title again next season.

Amazon could run out of new people to hire by 2024, with the company burning through its entire warehouse workforce annually thanks to grueling shifts, a leaked internal document reveals.

The document, first reported by Recode, includes the words: ‘If we continue business as usual, Amazon will deplete the available labor supply in the US network by 2024.’

The document was published internally in 2021. According to Recode, an Amazon spokesperson did not refute its authenticity.

The areas where employees are expected to be most scarce include the Inland Empire, California, an hour and a half east of Los Angeles. The region is around two hour drive from 20 million potential Amazon customers.

The document said that Amazon could run out of new workers in the Inland Empire by the end of 2021 or in 2022, although warehouses in Inland Empire continue to operate, and its unclear what, if any, staffing issues they currently face.

Mesa in Arizona could also run dry of staff very soon, as statistics shows that Amazon – famed for the punishing, tightly-controlled working conditions imposed on warehouse staff – loses more workers than it hires every year.

In 2020, for every 100 Amazon workers, six were injured, according to the Washington Post.

In 2020, for every 100 Amazon workers, six were injured, according to the Washington Post.

Wilmington, Delaware and Memphis, Tennessee are also at risk of running out of staff, the report showed.

According to Amazon’s own data, the company had an attritional rate of 123 per cent last year.

That means that over the course of the year, the number of workers who left the firm was equivalent to the entire number working there at the start of the year – with an additional 23 per cent on top.

Many workers at Amazon do stay longer, particularly those in more senior roles. But others come and go within the course of a year, inflating the attrition figure.

Amazon employs around a million people in the US, including head office workers, making it the second biggest private employer, behind the 2.3 million-strong Walmart ‘family.’

Its attrition rate is far above the national average for the most common jobs at Amazon, in warehouse work and transportation.

The national average for warehouse and transportation attrition was 46% in 2019 and 59% in 2020.

While for retail work, the average in 2019 was 58% and in 2020 it was 70%.

In 2020, for every 100 Amazon workers, six were injured, according to the Washington Post.

In September, the company’s CEO Andy Jassy said in an interview on CNBC: ‘For us, employee safety is priority number one for us in our fulfillment centers.’

Jassy assumed the role of CEO from founder Jeff Bezos in July 2021.

In the years before Covid-19, Amazon lost workers at a rate of 3% per week coupled with a 150% turnover annually, reports the New York Times.

Among the many reasons for the potential shortfall of workers is Amazon’s controversial employment practices and worker health and safety

Jose Pagan, pictured here, said that he was fired electronically after taking two days off to deal with an infected tooth

One anecdote relayed in the Recode article mentions an Amazon supervisor from The Bronx in New York.

Jose Pagan, 35, who supported his wife and children on his Amazon salary,  said that he was fired electronically after missing work to treat an infected tooth.

Pagan said that he did not have enough notice to use vacation days and didn’t have enough unpaid time off left which is what led to his termination.

He went on to say that even though he had a doctor’s note, the company didn’t care.

Pagan worked for a full week following his health issues and found out that he was fired when he showed up for work one night and found that his keycard didn’t work.

He was then told that he no longer worked at the company.

Pagan went to a HR representative who told him that the company would welcome him back in 90 days and in the mean time he should try and get some work as a driver with Uber or Grubhub.

At the time of his firing Pagan was on the verge of being promoted.

Despite multiple reports of casual firings, one former manager at Amazon’s Phoenix plant, told Recode, that now the culture is more geared toward keeping workers due to the high attrition rates.

Michael Garrigan said: ‘They were so concerned about attrition and losing people that they rolled back all the policies that us as managers had to enforce.’

Garrigan said that managers joked about not bothering to write up workers with citations because HR would ‘exempt it.’

He said: ‘It was almost impossible to get fired as a worker.’

Jassy, said in an internal memo to employees in April 2022 that there is no ‘silver bullet’ to make Amazon facilities magically safer, reports CBS News.

Jassy said in part: ‘We don’t seek to be average. We want to be best in class. We still have a ways to go.’

While in December 2021, six Amazon employees were killed in Edwardsville, Illinois, when a tornado struck the facility.

Workers who survived the tornado later filed a lawsuit against the construction company who built the facility. In it, the plaintiffs said that there was no proper sheltering available inside, reported KMOV in May 2022.

Following the tornado, Amazon denied claims from employees at the Edwardsville center that the company banned them from using their cell phones at work, reports Business Insider.

According of the activist group, More Perfect Union, two workers died at the company’s Bessemer, Alabama, facility within 24 hours of each other.

The group said that one of the deceased men had his request to go home denied by HR. Hours later he suffered a fatal stroke on the job.

The group alleges that a total of six people died at the Bessemer facility in 2021 and that Amazon has covered up the deaths.

Amazon denies these allegations.

In April 2022, Amazon was accused of illegally attempting to influence a defeated vote to unionize in the Bessemer facility, reports CNBC.

Apple fans still have four months left to wait before the iPhone 15 is expected to arrive, but a new leak gives the most detailed view yet of the firm’s new flagship.

‘Very accurate’ dummy units in a new video from MacRumors show all four of the new iPhone 15 models – including the standard model and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Like previous leaks, the units show the iPhone 15 has a USB-C charging port instead of a Lightning port, due to legislation passed in 2022 by the European Union

All four models also have ‘frosted back glass’, curvier edges, and come with Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped notch at the top of the screen.

It follows rumours that the high-end version of the new iPhone 15 will be Apple’s most expensive smartphone yet.

MacRumors revealed the four iPhone 15 dummy units in a video posted to YouTube, presented by content creator Dan Barbera.

Dummy smartphones are sent out by phone makers to third-party case manufacturers in the run-up to a device’s release.

Rumoured iPhone 15 models

  • iPhone 15 (standard model)
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max (also being referred to as ‘iPhone 15 Ultra’)

Although the objects look exactly like the real thing, they tend to be made largely of plastic and don’t contain the required circuitry to actually function.

Even so, MacRumors claims the dummy units provide ‘early impressions of what the iPhone 15 line-up is going to look and feel like’ when it’s released in September.

‘All of the rumours that have been circulating about the upcoming iPhone 15 seem to be corroborated and confirmed with these dummy units,’ said Barbera.

‘The dummy units are very accurate and show us a glimpse of what case manufacturers are using and expecting when it comes to the new iPhones.’

He said that at first glance the four iPhone 15 models ‘don’t look very different’ to last year’s iPhone 14, although there are ‘a few things’ that become noticeable on closer inspection.

Firstly, the Lightning charging port of previous iPhones has gone, replaced by USB-C, the charging technology already used by Android phones.

Apple has had to switch from Lightning, discernible by its eight pins, to USB-C due to new European legislation that is aiming to reduce electronic waste

Barbera, who tried out the new port with a USB-C charger, seems certain that the charging technology is all but confirmed for the next iPhone.

‘We’ve had basically confirmation from Apple themselves that this is going to happen – and that’s been the rumour for a while,’ he said.

‘It’s nice just to be able to stick a USB-C cord into the bottom and actually see that it’s a perfect fit.’

‘You get that sense of relief that we’re finally going to be able to carry one cable for almost all modern-day electronics.’

The edges of the iPhone 15 are much curvier compared with the iPhone 14 models, which makes it more comfortable in the hand, according to Barbera.

‘Those sharp corners, those sharp edges are a lot more rounded off now, they’re no longer squared, it’s kind of like a square-circle combination,’ he said.

iPhone 15’s edges also have a more ‘dull, brushed’ look than the shiny metal edges on the iPhone 14 models, thanks to the use of titanium instead of stainless steel, while the back is a matte glass rather than polished glass.

The switch control on the side of the iPhone 15 models is no longer a switch that users can toggle on and off, but a press-down button.

Meanwhile, Dynamic Island – a feature introduced last year with just the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max – will feature on all iPhone 15 models, Barbera said.

iPhone 15: Rumoured key features

– Curvier edges

– Matt glass back cover

– Thinner bezel

– A17 Bionic chip

– USB-C port instead of Lightning

Previous rumours suggested the new phone’s volume-up and volume-down buttons on the side of the iPhone 15 will be incorporated into one long seesaw-style button.

However, Barbera said this ‘is probably not going to happen this year’, suggesting Apple could introduce the single button for the iPhone 16 in 2024 instead.

The new video from MacRumors isn’t the first to claim to show dummy units of the iPhone 15.

Earlier this month, a video posted to YouTube by Unbox Therapy showed the dummy for the most expensive iPhone 15, which is variously referred to as ‘iPhone 15 Ultra’ and ‘iPhone 15 Pro Max’.

This particular dummy also revealed a USB-C charging port, thinner bezels, ‘brushed aluminum edges’ and a press-down button instead of a switch on the top left edge.

Overall, the Unbox Therapy presenter called the new device ‘incredible’ and ‘one of the best-looking models I’ve ever handled or looked at’.

Various sources are divided as to whether prices for the iPhone 15 family of smartphones will be higher than the iPhone 14.

One report from Taiwan’s United Daily News says the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be RMB 20,000, equivalent to $2,900 or £2,300.

However, Patently Apple calls this price rumour ‘a propaganda campaign’ started by Apple’s rivals in an attempt to direct them towards Chinese-made smartphones.

Apple is gearing up to release another huge product next month – its first ever mixed reality headset, which is expected to work closely with the next iPhone.

Why is Apple releasing a mixed reality headset?

Apple has long been rumoured to be developing an AR wearable; the tech giant filed a patent in 2019 that gives a glimpse into what it may be developing behind closed doors.

But work on the headset – supposedly called Reality Pro – has been going on for the best part of a decade.

According to leaker Mark Gurman, Reality Pro could be the next major platform beyond the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, which was first released to much hype back in 2015.

Expected to be called 'Reality Pro', the headset will transport notifications, messages, directions and more from your iPhone to in front of your eyes

Gurman has called the June 5 launch ‘one of the most critical events in the company’s history’ and an opportunity ‘to herald a post-iPhone era’.

With Reality Pro, Apple is ‘preparing for a future beyond the iPhone and iPad’ – but execs are ‘clear-eyed about Apple’s challenges pushing into this new market’.

While Gurman thinks the first version will be a ‘dud’ in terms of sales compared with the company’s existing hardware, future versions will likely do better as the product finds its place.

For now, Apple will have to explain to consumers why they’d want to own such a device and how it’s an improvement over the likes of iPhone and iPad.

Paolo Pescatore, analyst at PP Foresight, said the device will appeal to loyal fans and those who want ‘an immersive experience in areas such as games and live events’.

But among the general public, adoption and awareness of AR and VR technologies ‘remains lackluster’ and could hamper sales of the headset.

‘The device will provide a much needed boost and reignite interest in the virtual and augmented reality market,’ Pescatore told MailOnline.

‘Ultimately this is still at early stage and has some way to go before its mass market and widely accepted.

‘People are not rushing out of their seats to buy a VR headset or even watch 360 degree videos.’

Pescatore also said Apple ‘cannot solely rely on the iPhone forever’ given intense competition from rival firms in new product categories such as foldable devices

‘The company has placed strong focus on the iPhone as a gateway to the Apple universe,’ he said.

‘This might suggest it is behind the curve on new hardware.’
