Most women going through menopause are not being given proper treatment, leaving millions to suffer in silence, a major review suggests.

Just 15 percent of women get effective drugs or therapies, and misinformation leads many to go down the route of unproven natural remedies, according to the review, which analyzed over 200 studies going back 70 years.

While only around a third of middle-aged women suffer noticeable menopause, the review said that many more go through silent changes in the body, such as loss of bone density that leaves them vulnerable to chronic disease down the line.

The study, conducted by researchers in the US, Italy, and Australia, found popular treatments like acupuncture and herbal supplements either just slightly improved menopause symptoms or didn’t work at all.

Menopausal symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, changes in mood, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties, which can significantly impact women's lives

And antidepressants, which are commonly prescribed for hallmark symptoms like hot flashes, may alleviate symptoms but come with a host of side effects that may add to women’s misery, including nausea, sexual dysfunction, and high blood pressure.

‘The road to menopause is not difficult for all, but for some, symptoms may be severe or even disabling and disruptive to work and family,’ the study authors wrote.

‘Recognition that menopause, for most women, is a natural biological event, does not exempt the use of interventions to alleviate symptoms.

‘Despite decades of research pertaining to menopause, more work is needed.’

Without effective, evidence-based treatment, the researchers cautioned menopausal women are left vulnerable to long-term ‘silent’ health consequences like bone loss, diabetes, and heart disease.

The review looked at more than 200 sources spanning 71 years to collect data on current menopause knowledge.

They examined the effects of prescription drugs and homeopathic remedies, such as herbal treatments and acupuncture, on common side effects like hot flashes and night sweats.

They found ‘acupuncture appears no more effective than placebo,’ and herbal treatments only resulted in improvements in small, uncontrolled studies, so the evidence there is inconclusive.

However, cognitive-behavioral therapy did lead to some small improvements and boosted sleep and mood.

Additionally, the study, published Wednesday in the journal Cell, evaluated the effects of several selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are typically used to treat depression, on reducing hot flashes and night sweats.

The researchers found SSRIs like citalopram, fluoxetine, and paroxetine reduced these symptoms by 25 to 70 percent.

However, patients who took these medications experienced a host of uncomfortable side effects, including nausea, insomnia, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction, headache, high blood pressure, constipation, and dizziness.

Based on their findings, the team called for more individualized treatment approaches rather than recommending the same treatments to every woman.

‘Women with bothersome menopausal symptoms should be counseled on treatment options and offered evidence-based therapies,’ researchers wrote.

‘Therapy should be individualized depending on age and health risks, recognizing that health risks may increase with age.’

Menopause is a normal part of aging that occurs because the ovaries stop producing eggs. As a result, levels of the hormones that ovaries produce drop.

A hallmark sign of menopause is that affected women stop getting their period.

Nearly nine in 10 women experience symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, changes in mood, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties, such as anxiety and low self-esteem, as well as memory or concentration problems.

Other signs include sexual issues, bladder problems and dryness of the vagina.

Symptoms usually arise before menopause officially begins, during a period called perimenopause. During this time, women’s periods become irregular, hot flashes start, and fertility decreases.

For some, this only lasts a few months, but it can stretch as long as four to eight years.

The average age of onset for menopause in the US is 51. Those who undergo it between the ages of 40 and 45 have what doctors call ‘early menopause.’

After menopause, women enter post-menopause. This is when a woman hasn’t had a period in over a year, and symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and changes in sex drive continue.

This lasts for the rest of a woman’s life.

The researchers noted doctors should focus on preventing and treating the ‘silent’ health consequences menopausal women are prone to, including osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease.

‘Comprehensive care of postmenopausal women involves lifestyle optimization,’ they wrote.

‘This includes optimizing nutrition, avoiding being sedentary and increasing physical activity, adding strength and resistance exercise or training, getting adequate sleep, reducing stress, decreasing alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking.’

They also suggested menopause be characterized by ovarian function stopping rather than no longer having a menstrual cycle.

This is because many women who are not menopausal stop having a menstrual cycle due to certain birth control or procedures like a hysterectomy.

These approaches, the team argued, could help improve women’s long-term health.

Researchers added: ‘Optimizing health at menopause is the gateway to healthy aging for women.’

Democrats won the popular vote in the House by the largest margins since the Watergate scandal and resignation of Republican President Richard Nixon.

An analysis by NBC News reveals that Democrats stormed to victory over the Republicans in House races, by a whopping 8.6 million votes in this year’s midterms.

NBC reported that number is the largest margin that Democrats have defeated Republicans in a midterm House election since 1974.

That midterm race, shortly after Nixon resigned, allowed Democrats to win the popular vote by 8.7 million votes, NBC reported.

Some commentators have made comparisons between the administrations of Trump and Nixon as special counsel Robert Mueller examines the role of Russia in the 2016 election and whether the president attempted to obstruct justice and end the probe.

Nixon also resisted investigations after his administration attempted to distance itself with five men who broke into the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters at the Watergate hotel.

There is some recognition among Republicans that they need a tune-up moving forward.

‘I think everybody acknowledges we have a helluva problem,’ Josh Holmes, a top political adviser to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Politico.

‘The question is whether we can get everybody to set egos and business considerations aside to solve it. I’d certainly like to try’.

The outcome is a significant victory for Democrats after the party was locked out of power in Washington following the 2016 presidential election.

The results deal a major blow to Republicans who will lose their majority in the lower chamber and is a significant setback for President Donald Trump’s agenda in Congress.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi celebrated the win on Tuesday night at an event in Washington DC.

‘Women and men mobilized in historic numbers who saw what this GOP Congress was doing and refused to stand still. Tomorrow will be a new day in America’.

Drew Hammill, an aide to Pelosi, tweeted Tuesday evening that the President called Pelosi at 11.45 pm ‘to extend his congratulations on winning a Democratic House Majority’.

Capitol Hill will now have divided party control after Republicans maintained control of the Senate, according to projections.

That could lead to more gridlock and clashes between the two chambers or it could force the two parties to find common ground.

While a Democratic victory was far from guaranteed, the party had been viewed as a slight favorite to win the House on Election Day.

Under a Democratic-controlled House, Democrats will have more authority and fewer constraints on their ability to exercise oversight of the Trump administration and could launch investigations into the President’s finances.

They could also investigates Trump’s tax returns, as well as ramp up a probe into the possibility that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to win the White House, which Trump has denied.

The election was also a historic one for women, people of color and the LGBTQ community.

Female candidates spearheaded Democratic gains and at least 80 women had been elected to the House.

Sixty-nine of the House women are Democrats, including 27 of 28 newcomers, according to a USA TODAY analysis.

Jared Polis was the first gay man to win a governor’s race. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman elected to Congress.

Ayanna Pressley became Massachusetts’ first black congresswoman. Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib became the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

On Tuesday evening, Pelosi pledged that a Democratic House will act as a check on the White House and Republicans in Washington.

‘Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans. It’s about restoring the Constitution’s checks and balances to the Trump administration.

‘It’s about stopping the GOP and Mitch McConnell’s assault on Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and the health care of 130 million Americans living with pre-existing medical conditions’.

Discussion about the possibility of impeaching the President is also likely to intensify in a Democratic-controlled House.

  • Crater spans 520km in diameter
  • Buried deep underneath Deniliquin, NSW
  • Crater linked to Late Ordovician extinction event

A rural town in NSW is believed to be hiding the largest crater on Earth, made by a meteor twice as powerful as the one that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Experts believe the world’s largest meteor crater is buried deep in the earth in the town of Deniliquin, in the Riverina region of NSW close to the Victorian border.

The research, published in the Technophysics journal, suggests the impact structure spans up to 520km in diameter.

The Deniliquin structure is three times as wide as the crater in Chicxulub, Mexico, which was left by the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs 65million years ago.

The crater has yet to be tested by drilling but is believed to be linked to a mass extinction event.

Research suggests the crater was made by an impact during the Late Ordovician extinction event between 445.2 and 443.8 million years ago.

About 85 per cent of life on Earth was wiped out during the Ordovician event.

At the time, the Deniliquin structure was located on the eastern part of the Gondwana supercontinent – before it split apart – and wiped out about 85 per cent of life on Earth.

Study co-author Doctor Andrew Glikson said the Deniliquin structure could be even older and suggested it was caused during the Cambrian era – about 514 million years ago.

Massive asteroids have pummelled the Earth in its long history, with Australia recording at least 28 confirmed and 43 potential impact structures.

Doctor Glikson said identifying an impact structure is difficult as the crater can erode over millions of years.

A crater with an uplifted core is left behind after an asteroid strikes ‘similar to how a drop of water splashes upward from a transient crater when you drop a pebble in a pool’, Dr Glikson explained in LiveScience.

Australia has at least 28 confirmed and 43 potential impact structures, with Deniliquin being by far the largest

That central uplifted dome is a key characteristic of impact structures, but it can erode over millions of years and become difficult to identify.

‘Currently, the bulk of the evidence for the Deniliquin impact is based on geophysical data obtained from the surface,’ Dr Glikson wrote.

‘For proof of impact, we’ll need to collect physical evidence of shock, which can only come from drilling deep into the structure.

‘The next step will be to gather samples to determine the structure’s exact age. This will require drilling a deep hole into its magnetic centre and dating the extracted material.’

Scientists and study co-author Tony Yeates discovered a magnetic pattern beneath the Murray Basin in NSW between 1995 and 2000 which pointed to a buried impact structure.

Analysis between 2015 and 2020 revealed the existence of the 520km wide structure.

The crater has a seismically defined dome at its centre – which is similar to structures found after an asteroid strike.

The Deniliquin crater has all the features of a large impact structure including magnetic readings showing a symmetrical rippling pattern in the Earth’s crust and ‘radial faults’.

The magnetic rippling pattern was likely formed from the immense heat after the asteroid struck the Earth.
