Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has led tributes to a young Newcastle musician after he was tragically hit and killed by a train in May.

The famous singer took to Instagram on Sunday to share a special tribute to Sam Murphy, who was killed at Cardiff Station on a night out on May 21, aged 23.

A fundraiser ‘Shred For Sam’ will be held on Sunday at The Newcastle Hotel to pay tribute to Sam’s love of rock music and serve as a fundraiser for his family.

Daniel’s tribute began: ‘A talented and loving young man Sam Murphy was tragically hit by a train and killed.

‘Sam was a beautiful son to De, a supportive brother to Cheyenne, a loyal cousin to Lachlan, a respected bandmate and a friend to many.’

After reading a story about Sam and seeing a photo of the young man’s best friend Zane Fleming wearing a Silverchair T-shirt, Daniel decided to reached out to Sam’s family.

‘We spoke about honouring Sam and making sure his legacy and love of music was never forgotten,’ Daniel wrote.

He went on to encourage fans to leave a loving message.

‘Like me, most of you won’t have met Sam but it would mean a lot if you could leave a message of support for him here or elsewhere,’ he wrote.

He confirmed that the show will be on Sunday, with Zane’s band Lost Plaza being in the line-up.

The Shred For Sam line-up also includes Catpiss, Tyrants, Lamphead, Lost Plaza, Handsome Alice, Ryan Jack, Finnian Johnson, Charlii Ben, and G.A.G.

He added a special message to Sam.

‘To Sam, your legacy and your life will be celebrated and one day when the time comes we will meet wherever we go next and jam together,’ he wrote.

‘You might have to remind me how to play some of the old Silverchair songs again,’ he finished, with a love heart.

Sam had just completed a Bachelor’s degree of Communication at the University of Newcastle and intended to join the airforce.

The festival organiser is Ben Hastings, who was Sam’s best friend from his school days at St Paul’s Catholic College at Booragul.

Sam’s mother De Murphy told The Newcastle Herald that she would be at the concert, along with daughter Cheyenne, 22.

‘I think it’s beautiful that Ben’s organised this, it really means a lot,’ De told the publication.

‘It’s a beautiful honour to him as he was obsessed with music.’

Other bands took the time to share a tribute to Sam, including friend Zane Flemming, who was previously in the band Mission: Banana, with Sam.

Zane told The Newcastle Herald that Sam inspired him with guitar and was supportive of his musical ambitions.

‘Sam definitely helped and inspired me with guitar because it’s not my first instrument,’ Zane said.

‘It was really cool to have him there to help me make the transition.’

Organiser Ben paid tribute to Sam saying he was the ‘funniest dude’ and his laughter was ‘contagious’ to others.

NRL Immortal Andrew Johns has dramatically quit the SEN radio network as the fallout from his on-air feud with brother Matthew Johns continues to fester.

The footy siblings – who often don’t see eye to eye – have failed to patch up their differences following a heated on-air debate ahead of the State of Origin series opener last month.

Fox Sports identity Matthew Johns, who hosts the Morning Glory program each Friday, praised the coaching abilities of Queensland mentor Billy Slater, which got under his younger brother’s skin.

Andrew Johns is also a member of the NSW Blues coaching staff.

SEN station boss Craig Hutchison was confident the siblings would soon be on the same page – possibly once the Origin series is finished – but it is believed a fired up Andrew Johns has declared he won’t be back on the airwaves in 2023.

On June 9 – for the second successive week – Andrew failed to show at SEN’s Walker St studios in North Sydney.

Matthew Johns stated in the lead up ‘I’m just going to leave the studio door open,’ and if ‘he walks through the doors at one minute to nine then he does, if he doesn’t we will just have to make do.’

Johns and respected sports journalist Andrew Webster then failed to address the elephant in the room.

Matthew’s comments on Slater incensed young brother Andrew, who is as passionate as they come when it comes to the Blues.

‘Mate, I’m sick of you rapping Queensland, that’s what I’m sick of,’ Andrew, who is widely regarded as the Blues’ best ever player, fumed on live radio last month.

‘Put your Maroon jersey on, you should have some at home.

‘Just because you played four games and lost all four doesn’t mean you need to s**t bag NSW.’

Earlier this month, Matthew Johns confirmed the former NSW Blues halfback still wasn’t prepared to smoke the peace pipe.

‘Houston we have a problem, it’s official my brother is completely off me,’ Matty told listeners.

‘There were rumours he might not come. I thought the last three weeks of him not returning phone calls was laziness.

‘He is off me. This is nothing new for me and Joey (Andrew). We were forced to share a bedroom for 19 years.

‘We’ve had a fill of each other. Every six months we have a blue like this.’

While Matthew’s Origin career was relatively short, his brother played 23 times for the Blues, including a legendary man-of-the-match performance in Game Two of the 2005 series.

The pair have often clashed over the years, with most of their run-ins good natured.

Last July, Matthew used a radio debate about State of Origin as an opportunity to take a savage swipe at his brother over his love life.

The NSW side is known for dropping stars from their team with regularity – often when fans think they don’t deserve to be shown the door – whereas Queensland are regarded as showing more loyalty to their players.

Matty used Andrew – who is in his third long-term relationship – to sum up the Blues’ selection process.

‘It’s very NSW. I want people to know….be extremely concerned. Don’t marry anyone from NSW because we fall in love with new acquaintances very easily,’ he said on SEN.

‘What you do, is you just get rid of them. Just bring someone else in.

‘I mean, the best example is our best ever player, Andrew Johns, I think he’s onto his third wife.’

Ex-St. John’s basketball coach Mike Anderson SUES the school for nearly $46MILLION… saying he was fired for ‘fictitious’ reasons so they could hire Rick Pitino away from Iona

  • The school fired Anderson in early March and hired Pitino just ten days later
  • Anderson says that he is owed the $11.4m remaining on his deal plus damages

Former St. John’s men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson is seeking nearly $46 million from the school, alleging he was fired for ‘fictitious’ reasons so the program could avoid paying his buyout and hire Rick Pitino.

Anderson is seeking the $11.4 million that was remaining on his contract and $34.2 million in punitive damages, according to arbitration documents obtained by ESPN on Thursday.

St. John’s fired Anderson on March 10 after an 18-15 season. Ten days later, the school lured Pitino away from Iona with a reported six-year, $20 million contract.

According to his termination letter obtained by ESPN, the 63-year-old Anderson was dismissed for multiple reasons, including ‘failure to create and support an environment that strongly encourages student-athletes who are in the men’s basketball program to meet all university academic requirements.’

Other stated reasons include: ‘failure to perform your duties and responsibilities in a manner that reflected positively on St. John’s University … in actions (that) brought serious discredit’ to the school, and ‘failure to appropriately supervise and communicate with your assistant coaches.’

Anderson called the supposed problems in his program ‘fictitious’ and insisted he should not have been fired for cause, according to the documents obtained by ESPN.

‘St. John’s manufactured out of whole cloth its preposterous ‘for cause’ termination of Mr. Anderson’s employment with the sole purpose of attempting to extricate the University from its $11.4 million ironclad contractual obligation to Mr. Anderson, specifically so that it could otherwise divert those funds to Pitino,’ reads the legal filing made by Anderson’s representative.

Anderson was 68-56 (30-46 Big East) in four seasons with the Red Storm and did not reach the NCAA Tournament.

In 21 seasons as a head coach at UAB, Missouri, Arkansas and St. John’s, he has a 437-256 career record.
