Graham Potter ‘has interview with Lyon’ as the former Chelsea and Brighton boss is ‘targeted by the French club to potentially replace under-fire manager Laurent Blanc’

  • Graham Potter is reportedly under consideration to replace Laurent Blanc
  • Lyon are bottom of Ligue 1 with one point from their opening four games
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast It’s All Kicking Off!

French side Lyon are reportedly targeting Graham Potter as a potential successor for their under-fire manager Laurent Blanc.

Lyon have endured a miserable start to their Ligue 1 season with one point in four games leaving them bottom of the table.

Players were given a dressing down by the club’s ultras after their 4-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend, with the club now said to be looking into replacements for Blanc.

French outlet L’Equipe have now reported that Potter held an interview with the club’s American owner John Textor on Tuesday over the managerial position.

Lyon are considering him as a replacement for Blanc, while Potter himself is said to be interested in the project at the Groupama Stadium.

Potter has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in April, after less than seven months in charge.

The 48-year-old suffered 11 defeats in 31 games after replacing Thomas Tuchel, as he struggled to deal with Chelsea’s bloated squad following their heavy spending last season.

Potter though did impress at Brighton beforehand, leading them to their first top-half finish in 2022 since they were promoted to the Premier League in 2017.

He had previously been in contention to become manager of Nice, before the French side instead decided to hire 34-year-old Francesco Farioli from Turkish side Alanyaspor in June.

Lyon were once the top team in France, winning the Ligue 1 title in seven straight seasons from 2002 to 2008.

However, they have not won a league title since with Paris Saint-Germain dominating the league over the past decade.

Lyon were 4-0 down at half-time against PSG at the weekend thanks to a Kylian Mbappe brace and goals from Achraf Hakimi and summer signing Marco Asensio.

Corentin Tolisso’s second-half penalty provided some scant consolation for Lyon, who also suffered a 4-1 loss to Montpellier last month.

After the final whistle against PSG, the players stood in front of the Virage Nord, the end housing the Bad Gones ultras – Lyon’s most prominent ultras group and one of the biggest in Ligue 1.

Lyon players sheepishly stared towards the stands as one of the ultras leaders addressed them with a megaphone.

‘To the Olympique Lyonnais 2023-2024 squad, this message is addressed to you,’ he said.

‘To those who assume the status of dressing-room leaders, the message is clear: If there are leaders in this dressing room, they no longer have the right to remain silent.

‘You’re wearing the Olympique Lyonnais jersey. You’re the ones who wear the Olympique Lyon jersey.

‘Others before you have worn it, glorified it.

‘But to do that, you’re going to have to earn it. We love and respect this shirt.

‘There’s only one other thing we ask: to sing your names. Sing them with love, not like we sang the names of the little *******. who have left our club in the last six months.

‘We want to sing your names with respect, with love. Because we know you play with love.

‘But we expect you guys to respect our jersey […] and if we have to take our losses to do so with our heads held high. Go OL.’

Treasurer Scott Morrison has run out of an interview after being told there was a division in the parliament.

Mr Morrison was speaking to Paul Murray on Sky News on Thursday when he cut the interview short because people were ‘banging on the door’.

‘I’m sorry Paul we’re going to have to stop because people are banging on the door,’ the Treasurer said.

‘What?’, Mr Morrison then asked someone off to the left of camera.

‘There’s a division mate I’ve got to go,’ he added before pulling out his ear piece and bolting out the door.

On Thursday Labor took advantage of the government’s small numbers in parliament to pass three votes after a number of MPs left Canberra early to head home.

The opposition tried to bring on debate in a bid to call on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to establish a royal commission into banks.

Labor then won three divisions in its attempt to expedite debate, taking advantage of the coalition’s slender majority.

It’s the first time in 50 years that a majority government has lost a vote in the House of Representatives.

Mr Morrison said there was ‘banging on the door’ (left) during his interview, before telling Paul Murray he had to leave because of the division (right)

Speaker Tony Smith was also forced to use his casting vote – believed to be for the first time – on a procedural motion to allow the debate to be considered.

However Mr Morrison later denounced the move and accused Labor leader Bill Shorten of taking political advantage.

‘He is using a stunt to promote his stunt,’ he told parliament.

The opposition, in celebration mode over the victory, said it took just two sitting days for the government’s majority to collapse.

‘Tonight’s been a wake-up call for the Turnbull government – the clock is ticking,’ manager of opposition business Tony Burke said.

On Friday morning Manager of Government Business Christopher Pyne said the loss of three votes was a ‘stuff-up’ and a ‘valuable lesson’ for the government.

‘There is no doubt what happened late yesterday afternoon was a stuff-up and those people who weren’t there obviously they learnt a valuable lesson, in fact everyone learnt a valuable lesson,’ Mr Pyne told the Nine Network on Friday.

Mr Pyne said of course he didn’t give MPs permission to leave early, but there wasn’t any point in pointing fingers.

‘It’s a salutary lesson for anyone who went home before the house rose yesterday afternoon,’ he said.

The cabinet minister refused to be drawn on what Mr Turnbull will say to his colleague Michael Keenan who was on a flight at the time of the votes.

‘People out there in the community are more worried about jobs, more worried about feeding themselves and their children than they are about three adjournment votes in the House of Representatives,’ he said.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese described the events as a farce.

‘If you can’t run the parliament, you can’t run the country,’ he said.

‘We were in control during three years of minority government, each and every day of the parliament.

‘This mob with a majority government couldn’t get through three days,’ Mr Albanese added.

Michael Oher admits he’s ‘grateful for the Tuohys’ in interview given just just HOURS before filing lawsuit against ‘adoptive’ family for ‘tricking him into signing conservatorship’ and earning nothing for 2009 hit movie The Blind Side

  • The former NFL player filed a legal petition against the Tuohy family Monday
  • Prior to the filing, Oher promoted his book on Mississippi Public Broadcasting
  • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Michael Oher detailed his frustrations with The Blind Side amid explaining his tough upbringing prior to a legal filing against the Tuohy family, popularized in the 2009 film.

Oher joined Marshall Ramsey on Mississippi Public Broadcasting Monday morning, prior to the stunning announcement of a legal petition against the family, to promote his latest book; When Your Back’s Against the Wall.

In the filing, Oher alleged he had been tricked into signing Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy on as his conservators, which allowed them to profit off his name and likeness.

The former first-round draft pick did not address the issue and only briefly mentioned the famed family during the 48-minute interview.

Though, as he has done several times down the years, criticized the effect the film and the preceding 2006 book by Michael Lewis have had upon him.

The 2009 film The Blind Side captured some of Oher’s story but apparently it had misnomers

‘Through help to this day right here, my circle is getting me back to who I was and still healing prior to when all these stories were created,’ Oher said.

‘The personality, just everything you get it taken away from it and things that are out of control. You just continue to fight and eventually get back on course.’

Oher, a Super Bowl champion with the Ravens, spoke to his appreciation for the Tuohys but detailed a supposed misnomer within the The Blind Side

‘Whatever you see in the movie or books you’ve have to understand what it took for me be this 18-year-old kid when this story took shape.’

Oher was 20 at the time of the book’s release and 23 upon the film’s release.

‘And the things I went through and had to do to go through to that point I went through from 3 years old to 18 when I moved in with the Tuohy family – who I’m grateful for letting me stay my senior year there.

‘But you have to understand, I was an All-American football player before I moved in with them, you have to understand what it took for me to get to that point.’

Oher has previously suggested the stories surrounding his life were detrimental to his football career.

In 2012 at Super Bowl media day, he said

The 37-year-old alluded to his accomplishments being trivialized or quasi-dismissed on radio Monday.

‘From that point prior you get everything taken away from you, the hard work. That’s what I want to let people know, you can get things done.’

Oher detailed his challenges growing up – long before meeting the Tuohy family –  which led him to selling newspapers instead of attending school.

‘I took it upon myself to get out find jobs, sell newspapers, do any and everything – I had steal from grocery stores, just to put food in the refrigerator when I could.

‘I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know if it was the right thing, I just knew it was better than anything else I could be doing.’

Oher also detailed those character-building years, prior to being brought in by the Tuohys, formulated a purpose in him.

‘I want to be able to continue to give back to those – I grew up around so many of those people, who had they been given an opportunity, they would’ve been just as successful in something else.’

Biden mocked for choosing The Weather Channel for a rare sit-down TV interview

  • President Biden is sitting down with The Weather Channel in Arizona on Tuesday to discuss climate change and extreme weather events
  • Republicans jumped on the outlet choice by referencing Democratic claims that Biden only discussed the ‘weather’ when on  calls with his son and his associates
  • Hunter’s former business partner Devon Archer told the Oversight panel Hunter put his father on speakerphone 20 times with foreign contacts

Joe Biden is sitting for an interview with The Weather Channel on Tuesday – sending critics into a tizzy with jokes about Democratic claims that the President only discussed the ‘weather’ during calls with his son’s business associates.

Hunter Biden‘s former business partner Devon Archer told Congress during a closed-door testimony earlier this month that the elder Biden, 80, would often join in business calls with his son. He insisted, however, that it was mostly casual conversation about things like the weather.

Now President Biden has agreed to the rare sit-down interview, conducted in Arizona to discuss extreme weather events across the country and how to address climate change. The interview will air in full on Wednesday.

Of the outlet choice for his first time facing a reporter since mid-July, White House Communications Director Ben LaBolt tweeted that Biden is just ‘meeting viewers where they are,’ because some voters don’t tune into political news.

Democrats hopped on Archer’s testimony as a reasonable explanation for why Biden was on the calls with his son’s foreign business associates.

Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) told MSNBC that it’s not a crime to ‘exchange pleasantries.’

‘Is there problematic questions about Hunter Biden? And I said something that shouldn’t be controversial, which is that if you committed a crime, you should be held accountable,’ Himes told MSNBC after Archer’s testimony. ‘But have they pointed to anything to suggest that Joe Biden engaged in corrupt behavior? No.’

He added: ‘And on the contrary, Hunter Biden’s business partner said, “Yeah, he was on some phone calls. Talking about the weather. Exchanging pleasantries.”‘

Additionally, Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.) had the same odd ‘weather’ response when asked by reporters at the Capitol why he wasn’t concerned with the conversations Joe Biden had with Hunter while on speakerphone with foreign business associates.

‘It was clear that it was part of the daily conversations that Hunter had with his father,’ Himes said of the calls. ‘And it was – sounded like – most of the time, now President Biden didn’t even know who the people he was at dinner.

‘He was just asked to say, “hello.” He would, you know, talk about the – he described it several times, they asked over and over and over,’ he added. ‘He described what the weather was, “what’s going on on your end?” The witness was very, very consistent that none of those conversations ever had to do with any business dealings or transactions.

‘They were purely what he called casual conversations.’

Of the upcoming interview on The Weather Channel, Chad Gilmartin, a spokesman for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, tweeted: ‘Well this makes sense since Joe Biden called Hunter’s business partners over 20 times to discuss the weather…’

Kai Havertz’s announcement video and first Arsenal interview are ‘LEAKED’ – just hours after he was pictured in the club’s shirt – as he closes in on £65m move to the Gunners

  • Germany’s Kai Havertz is closing in on a £65m switch from Chelsea to Arsenal
  • The 24-year-old playmaker was pictured in an Arsenal shirt earlier this week
  • His announcement video and first Arsenal interview have now been leaked

Kai Havertz‘s £65m move to Arsenal appears to edging closer after his announcement video and first interview with the club were leaked online.

The Chelsea star has been negotiating a switch to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, and was pictured in an Arsenal shirt on Tuesday to give the clearest indication yet that the deal is set to go through.

A short announcement video has now been leaked on social media, with Havertz posing for the cameras wearing the red and white shirt of the Gunners.

The back of the shirt shows the No 29, with the German international set to continue wearing the same number that he had at Chelsea for three years.

A longer interview with Havertz has also made its way online, as he is seen speaking about his excitement at moving to the north London club.

Havertz tells Arsenal’s media team: ‘It’s super exciting for me personally. I’m so glad to join this amazing club, this club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of big things.

He also explained his reasoning for taking the No 29 once more, revealing that he always selected it when playing video games with his brother, and describing it as the ‘perfect number’.

Havertz’s imminent departure from Chelsea to join Arsenal means he will be playing in the Champions League next season, and the 24-year-old hailed the competition as a ‘special tournament’ after winning it with the Blues in 2021.

That was the highlight of his time at Stamford Bridge, as he netted the winner in the final against Manchester City to give Chelsea their first Champions League triumph in nine years.

That came at the end of an indifferent first season in England, and Chelsea fans hoped it would kickstart his Premier League career, but the attacking midfielder struggled to live up to expectations during his three-year stay in west London.

He is set to leave the club having played 139 times across all competitions, scoring 32 goals, with just nine of those coming last term as Chelsea finished down in 12th place.

Mikel Arteta clearly has faith in Havertz, though, and has pushed to sign him as Arsenal look to challenge for the title again next season.

He seems to have got his man, with an official announcement expected in the coming hours.

Andrew Tate today blasted the BBC over their attempts to ‘vilify’ him after he gave the broadcaster his first interview since being detained over sex trafficking charges.

In a combative interview, Tate repeatedly dismissed the BBC’s questions about allegations of rape, human trafficking and exploitation of women – and instead demanded to ask his own questions.

When quizzed about a testimony from a woman who has accused Tate of rape and exploitation, the influencer responded by asking his own question and telling the BBC journalist: ‘You’re not the boss here because I’ve allowed you into my house.’

Following the interview, which collapsed after Tate, 36, said he was doing the BBC a ‘favour’ by speaking to the broadcaster, the self-professed misogynist launched a scathing attack on the broadcaster.

He tweeted: ‘The mainstream media which vilify me, beg me for interviews under the guise of balanced journalism. The Matrix is desperate.’

Tate claimed that whilst he had been vilified, the BBC was not similarly outraged when the broadcaster’s presenters Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris were grooming and raping girls.

‘Where was the BBC’s outrage when Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris were grooming and raping and molesting young girls for decades?’

Savile, who was one of Britain’s biggest television stars before his death in 2011, molested at least 72 children, some as young as eight, over a four-decade campaign of abuse. And Harris was jailed over 12 indecent assaults against four underage girls.

Tate is currently under house arrest in Romania with his brother Tristan over allegations of human trafficking, rape and forming an organising a crime group to exploit victims.

In a bizarre series of tweets, Tate ranted: ‘I harbour no hard feelings against the BBC or any journalist who attempts to lie about me. The truth of my message is known and good will continue to spread. Tolerance and love for you all.’

In another tweet, Tate said: ‘The level of stress and pressure I operate under would be too much 99.99% of men. They truly want me dead. But I persist, day after day. No alcohol. No drugs. No therapy. Simply wake up. Pray. Then get to work. Allah is the best of planners.’

In yet another tweet from today, Tate claimed he was a ‘political prisoner’ who had been ‘left to rot’.

He added: ‘England will now attempt to put me in jail. Matrix attacks via the ‘justice’ system incoming.’

The influencer has been accused of spreading misogynistic ‘rape culture’ content to audiences as young as 13 on TikTok, with Tate speaking about attacking a woman if she accused him of cheating.

Tate is currently under house arrest in Romania over allegations he recruited young women and forced them to create online pornographic content.

When asked about the allegations made against him, Tate told the BBC in the heated interview: ‘I know the case intimately and you don’t. I have seen all the criminal files and the evidence against me and you haven’t.

‘I know the truth of what happened and you don’t. And I’m telling you absolutely and utterly, I’ve never hurt anybody, that the case that’s been put against me is completely and utterly fabricated and I’m never going to be found guilty of anything.’

Tate then dismissed the testimonies of individual women who have accused the influencer of rape and exploitation. One British woman, referred to as Sophie to protect her identity, has claimed Tate slapped and strangled her to the point of passing out ‘during rough sex’.

Sophie told the BBC in February Tate had charmed her at first and encouraged her to work for his webcam business before becoming controlling and coercive.

When asked about Sophie’s testimony, Tate claimed, without providing evidence, that she did not exist and instead kept asking the BBC reporter questions instead of answering her own.

But Tate hit back and said: ‘No we are equal here. I’ve allowed you into my house. You don’t come here with a position of authority. I’m doing you the favour as legacy media, giving you relevance, by speaking to you.

‘And I’m telling you now, this Sophie, which the BBC has invented, who has no face. Nobody knows who she is. I know.’

Prosecutors have said the Tate brothers recruited their victims by seducing them and falsely claiming to want a relationship or marriage.

The victims were then taken to properties on the outskirts of the capital, Bucharest, and coerced to produce pornographic content for social media sites that generated large financial gain, prosecutors say.

Tate’s rise to fame in recent years has been linked to the proliferation of British teenagers using the Chinese video sharing platform TikTok.

Tate, who has told rape victims to ‘bear responsibility’ for the abuse, said in one video that he would attack a woman if she accused him of cheating.

When asked if a woman accused him of cheating and came at him with a machete, Tate said: ‘It’s bang out the machete, boom in her face and grip her by the neck. Shut up b****.’

Leading domestic abuse charities have warned such content is extremely misogynistic and has the potential to radicalise men and young boys to bring harm to women.

When asked about this during the BBC interview, Tate said the accusations were ‘absolute garbage’.

‘That’s very upsetting and the reason that’s very upsetting is because I know that’s not true, I’m genuinely a good person. I believe my impact on the world is positive,’ Tate claimed.

The former kickboxer added: ‘I preach hard work, discipline, I’m an athlete, I preach anti-drug, I preach religion, I preach no alcohol, I preach no knife crime, every single problem with modern society I’m against.

‘I’m teaching young men to be disciplined, to be diligent, to listen, to train, to work hard, to be exactly like me.

‘And I’m saying that if men grew up like me which are hardworking and diligent, with emotional control and stoic, we’re gonna have a better society, not a worse society.

‘To sit here and say that schools in England, which is a failing nation, which has knife crime going through the roof, violence going through the roof, men’s mental health going through the roof, and they’re going to all blame me because I appeared on the internet is disingenuous.’

Tate was arrested on December 29 in Bucharest along with his brother Tristan and two Romanian women on suspicion of human trafficking, rape and forming an organised crime group to exploit victims.

The notorious misogynist spent three months in prison before being put under house arrest last month after winning an appeal against a judge’s decision to extend his time in jail for a fourth time.

Tate and Tristan moved into a converted warehouse in Romania in 2017, which they staffed with armed guards.

At their safehouse on the outskirts of Bucharest, the Tate brothers had a video chat studio where several women were found during a police raid in April 2022.

Former police officer Luana Radu (left) and Georgiana Naghel (right) are suspected of assisting the Tate brothers in the crimes they are under investigation for.  The new charge against Tristan is believed to relate to an alleged incident involving Tristan’s associate Naghel inflicting pain on another woman in 2021

Romanian anti-organized crime agency DIICOT said in a statement after the December arrests that it had identified six victims in the human trafficking case who were allegedly subjected to ‘acts of physical violence and mental coercion’ and sexually exploited by members of the alleged crime group.

The agency said victims were lured with pretenses of love and later intimidated, placed under surveillance and subjected to other control tactics while being coerced into engaging in pornographic acts for the financial gain of the crime group.

In January, Romanian authorities descended on a compound near Bucharest linked with the Tate brothers and towed away a fleet of luxury cars that included a Rolls-Royce, a Ferrari and a Porsche. They reported seizing assets worth an estimated $3.9 million.

Prosecutors have said that if they can prove the cars’ owners gained money through illicit activities such as human trafficking, the assets would be used to cover the expenses of the investigation and to compensate victims. Tate also unsuccessfully appealed the asset seizure.

Tate is also accused of raping a Moldovan woman, who he alleges followed him from London, in March 2022, which he categorically denies.

In January, he told the Bucharest Court of Appeal that the alleged victim moved to Romania with him voluntarily in November 2021.

Tate claimed she filed a rape allegation nearly six months later when he refused to give her money to buy a house and become a TikTok star.

And in April, it emerged that Tate is reportedly facing the possibility of being sued by three British women who claimed he sexually abused them.

The legal team who are putting the allegations together, which it will make clear once they have the money to bring civil action against Tate in the High Court.

The women, now aged in their late 20s and early 30s, reportedly claim that Tate, 36, sexually abused them between 2013 and 2016, as the self-described misogynist ran an online sex firm from Luton, Bedfordshire.

An investigation by British police forces into complaints made by two women at the time resulted in no charges being brought against Tate, who repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

The British women looking to bring the claim against Tate say that they have suffered personal injury and psychiatric harm after alleged violent sexual and physical assaults in the UK.

They are being represented by law firm McCue Jury & Partners.

Tate’s views on women, masculinity and entrepreneurship, voiced in podcasts and shared online, became popular in 2022 as they were shared in short clips around social media.

He was ultimately banned from various platforms for misogyny and hate speech.

Tate has repeatedly claimed Romanian prosecutors have no evidence and alleged their case is a ‘political’ conspiracy designed to silence him.

Interview: Marks & Spencer chief executive Stuart Machin https://latestnews.top/interview-marks-spencer-chief-executive-stuart-machin/ https://latestnews.top/interview-marks-spencer-chief-executive-stuart-machin/#respond Sun, 28 May 2023 00:12:14 +0000 https://latestnews.top/2023/05/28/interview-marks-spencer-chief-executive-stuart-machin/ There are many serious business questions to ask Stuart Machin, the chief executive of Marks & Spencer. There are many serious business questions to ask Stuart Machin, the chief executive of Marks & Spencer. As the man in charge of restoring the fortunes of the UK’s best-loved retailer, a weighty responsibility to the nation’s shoppers and his army of small shareholders lies on his shoulders.

Before we get to that, though, I want to know about Joan Collins. He is friendly with Dame Joan, a fact that emerged when she was hit by a masked cyclist en route to a dinner with Machin, actor Christopher Biggins and several other pals at Rules restaurant in Covent Garden.

He says: ‘She is an icon… and she is so proudly British. I love her whole style.’

The actress, he says, is a ‘huge fan’ of M&S and visits her local store regularly when she is in the UK. She sends WhatsApps with pictures of her trolley and writes that ‘she is keeping me going’. He calls her ‘an absolute star and legend’.

Machin, who has just completed his first year as chief executive, is one of M&S’s best customers. He is the company’s third biggest buyer of menswear. The identity of the top two remains a mystery.

Road to recovery: Stuart Machin took over at Marks & Spencer last year

More importantly, millions of ordinary customers are buying more.

The City loved Machin’s first set of annual results. Pretax profits were up by more than a fifth to £476 million, sales of food were nearly 9 per cent higher and there was an 11.5 per cent increase in clothing and homeware sales.

Machin is a big supporter of the Mail’s ‘Scrap the Tourist Tax’ campaign. ‘Tourists would come here knowing they would get their VAT-free shopping, not just in London but across the UK. We are asked about it all the time by tourists in our Marble Arch store.’

Speaking of which, he is unrepentant in the face of critics of his plan to redevelop the flagship shop. Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove called in the proposal to demolish and rebuild the store, known as ‘The Arch’. He has delayed his decision for three months. It is due in July.

‘It is energy inefficient,’ he says. ‘We are spending a fortune on maintenance and it is on the verge of being damaging for our brand.

‘No amount of money will fix that store in its current state. The only option is a complete rebuild.

‘It could be the most amazing store in the most amazing destination. But it is very hard when you can’t get a decision.’

If his plans to rebuild are rejected, he will move M&S out of Marble Arch after 93 years. ‘If this doesn’t work, I can’t see an option,’ he says.

To the relief of long-suffering small investors, M&S shares have risen almost 20 per cent this year, however there is still a lot of ground to make up. M&S was kicked out of the elite FTSE 100 in 2019 and shares are still way below the £4.00 offered by Sir Philip Green in a takeover bid nearly two decades ago. Dare we hope that the elusive M&S recovery is finally a reality?

‘I don’t think we will ever declare victory, definitely not under my leadership,’ says Machin. ‘There are always more challenges. We can go from hero to zero and back again very quickly. I want sustainable growth.’

One fly in the ointment is Ocado Retail. In 2019, M&S paid £750 million for a 50 per cent share in a joint venture with Ocado Group to supply its products online.

But sales at the division were down by 1.2 per cent and M&S’s share of its net loss was nearly £30 million. He says he wants it to be in positive territory in the next two to three years.

‘We wouldn’t have had any other choice about going online. We couldn’t do it ourselves and we couldn’t do a store pick model as we have too many small shops.’

Hannah Gibson has been running the Ocado Retail division since September. Machin says: ‘She is really focused on the customer, on service, on the new platform, web dev- elopment and how that is going to transform in the next 12 months. She is very focused on value. Four hundred more lines have gone on.’

Inflation has been a major bugbear, with a £50 million increase in energy costs. And £100 million was added to the wages bill last year.

M&S has taken a hit to profit margins in order to soften the blow to consumers. A programme to save £400 million of costs over five years is under way.

Machin points to the fact that M&S bought Gist, its logistics provider, last year, in a move that will reduce costs and give it more control over the supply chain. ‘We have already had £25 million of benefit,’ he says. On the fashion side, M&S has successfully introduced brands from outside – including Sosandar, Hobbs, Nobody’s Child and Seasalt – with more in the pipeline. Its decision to close down some of its high street branches has caused distress in some local communities. Closures, he says, are only part of the story. M&S is investing about £500 million in a ‘store rotation programme’.

As well as shutting 67 ‘low productivity’ outlets, the plan is to have 180 full-line shops and to open more than 100 new food halls by April 2026. The idea is to grow through ‘omni-channel’ shopping, where the bricks-and-mortar stores work in harmony with the online business, so customers can buy whenever and however they wish.

‘We should really have had a property strategy 20 years ago,’ Machin says. ‘The competition has really good stores and we have an ageing estate. You could argue we should close a few more quickly.’

Before joining M&S, Machin worked at Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda, and spent a decade in Australia. He was the managing director of Target, a subsidiary of the Aussie conglomerate Wesfarmers, but resigned in 2016 after an accounting probe. He was, he said, unaware of the issues, but accepted a share of responsibility as they happened on his watch.

He was appointed as managing director of M&S’s food business two years later, then made co-chief executive last year with Katie Bickerstaffe, in an arrangement that raised eyebrows. ‘It’s working well with Katie,’ he says.

‘In the first few weeks it wasn’t overly clear because we were both in new jobs, but we bounce off each other. Katie is a fantastic partner. She is a very strong number two.’ As a youngster, he wanted to teach religious education, but he caught the retail bug from part-time jobs in his teens. ‘Work is probably my hobby,’ he says. ‘It has always defined me. I enjoyed the Eurovision song contest in Liverpool, but I did four stores on the way.’

Machin has a likeable demeanour, but it’s clear there is a steely side underneath – and that he is relentlessly in pursuit of improvement.

‘I have a healthy paranoia,’ he says. ‘Everyone knows I ruffle a few feathers. They all know what I am like.’ He personally tries out the recipes for M&S from top chef Tom Kerridge to see whether the ingredients are all available and how easy they are to make. ‘I like to cook the recipe and time myself to see how long it takes,’ he says. He emails Kathryn Turner, the director of product development, at least once a day with his observations. Machin is ‘obsessed with shrinkflation’. He says: ‘I measure everything. Naming no names, some big brands charge the same price for a smaller product – but we don’t.

‘I thought our Turkish Delight bar had got smaller, but everyone assures me it hasn’t. ‘I complained recently because I thought the lettuce wasn’t crunchy enough.

‘Everything new, I buy it immediately to eat.’ He tests every new food product personally and makes his feelings known if they don’t pass muster. He adds: ‘I call that protecting the magic.’

Donald Trump was filmed rubbing shoulders with Nigel Farage at his Scottish golf resort yesterday ahead of a sit-down interview with the GB News presenter this evening.

The former president – wearing his trademark red ‘Make America Great Again’ cap – greeted the former UKIP leader with a firm handshake inside what appeared to be Trump’s Turnberry hotel on Scotland’s west coast.

Trump, dressed in his golfing attire, laughed and joked with a suited Farage ahead of the GB News interview this evening where the two are set to discuss ‘court cases in America’, the Coronation, and the state of Scottish politics.

Trump’s golfing trip across the pond to Turnberry came as he opened a new course on the Scottish east coast which he named after his late mother. It came as Scottish lawmakers are also revisiting a probe into how he was able to purchase the two resorts.

Back home, Trump is also facing mounting legal troubles after being indicted by a Manhattan district court for his alleged role in the payment of ‘hush money’ to a porn star during the 2016 presidential election, as well as an ongoing New York City rape case.

Trump and Farage were all smiles as the two reunited on the picturesque west coast of Scotland.

The two, who appear to have struck up a tight friendship through their political support for one another, had a brief discussion, which could not be heard, before opening up to the rest of the room.

‘Does everyone know Nigel?’ Trump asked, addressing what seemed to be a buzzing packed out chandelier-lit hall.

‘I’m doing a little minor interview tomorrow,’ the embattled ex-president joked – suggesting he may use the opportunity to divulge his thoughts on several key issues amid his run for the Republican nomination in 2024.

A photographer then steps in and gestures as if to ask if he could take an image of the two men together.

Farage has been a very vocal supporter of the former president, appearing several times at his rallies and defending many of the controversies that have surrounded the businessman-turned-politician.

This evening’s interview is part of Trump’s brief visit to Scotland which also saw him open a course at a second golf resort in Aberdeenshire on Monday.

Trump landed in Aberdeen on Monday morning, saying ahead of his arrival on his platform Truth Social that he was visiting Scotland to cut the ribbon on the ‘spectacular’ golf course.

He and his son Eric arrived on ‘Trump Force Once’ – his private Boeing 757-200 – where they were greeted by two pipers, a red carpet, and a 10-vehicle motorcade.

Trump’s legal woes have grown significantly since his last visit to Scotland back in 2018 when he was still president.

Earlier this year he was indicted by a Manhattan district court over his alleged involvement in the payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels, as well as accusations of election interference and illegal retention of classified White House documents.

He is also the subject of an ongoing  New York City rape case, which on Monday saw Judge Lewis Kaplan throw out a request from Trump’s lawyer to declare a mistrial based on ‘unfair and prejudicial rulings’.

The case has been brought by E. Jean Carroll who says Trump assaulted her between 1995 and 1996 in upmarket New York department store Bergdorf Goodman.

Carroll sued Trump for battery and defamation last November over the alleged rape and his Tweets afterwards calling her a liar.

Other women have also come forward as part of the case to make allegations against the former president.

A retired stockbroker on Tuesday told the court how Trump groped her and tried to kiss her on a plane in full view of another passenger.

Jessica Leeds, 81, said that it felt like the former president had a ‘zillion hands’ when he put his hands on her breasts in the first class seat in 1979.

Another passenger on the plane had ‘eyes like saucers’, she said, as he watched Trump put his hand up her skirt before she fought him off and walked away to another seat.

The testimony came in the second week of magazine writer

This is the second week of magazine writer E. Jean Carroll’s civil lawsuit against Trump.

Trump’s attorney confirmed today that he will not be attending his rape trial in New York and instead a video deposition will be shown.

Trump’s arrival in Scotland this week as seen the country’s politicians urge new First Minister Humza Yousaf to look again at seeking a so-called ‘McMafia’ order to probe how Trump was able to buy the resorts in Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire.

Trump’s company purchased Turnberry in Ayrshire in 2014 from a Dubai-based company for an undisclosed fee. Despite still being in the development phase, he purchased the Menie, Aberdeenshire resort back in 2006.

The Scottish government previously decided not to pursue an Unexplained Wealth Order in relation to the purchase of the two resorts in 2021.

Yousaf, Scotland’s justice secretary at the time, told the country’s parliament at the time that it would be an abuse of power to launch such a probe.

According to The Herald, Trump – who in most other projects he bankrolls takes out large loans in order to finance them – instead spent more than £300 million in cash.

Neither of his two Scottish clubs turn a profit, the newspaper reports.
